In 2008, Latino voters overwhelmingly supported Barack Obama over John McCain, siding with the Democrat by a 36-point margin, 67% to 31%, according to exit polls. The president won't be able to improve upon this, will he?
Actually, he might. Latino Decisions released a new poll this morning, pointing to an even larger gap between Obama and Republican Mitt Romney, with the president leading 70% to 22%. It's the first time in nearly two years of Latino Decisions polls that Obama has reached this level of support. Here's a chart I put together comparing 2012 to 2008.

Maddow Blog chart based on Latino Decisions data
It's also worth noting that the same poll surveyed Latinos in 13 battleground states, and Obama did slightly better, leading 71% to 21%.
It's fair to say even most Republican strategists believe Romney will have a difficult time winning the White House with Latino support this low.
We know, of course, exactly why the GOP candidate is struggling. Part of it is the result of Obama's genuine popularity, driven by recent action on the goals of the DREAM Act, and part of it's caused by Romney deliberately antagonizing Latinos -- endorsing "self-deportation," vowing to veto the DREAM Act, palling around with Pete Wilson and Kris Kobach, etc.
But don't worry, Team Romney has a plan. The candidate's Spanish-speaking son, Craig Romney, is now appearing in his second campaign ad, promising Latinos his father will work on a permanent solution to the immigration system, working with leaders of both parties."
It's almost amusing, in a way. The guy who sees Arizona's SB1070 as a "model" for the nation, and who's touted "self-deportation" as a policy instead of a parody, is going to approve a bipartisan immigration reform plan? But he won't tell anyone what it is? It's hard to imagine anyone buying this.

Is Mitt thinking about concentration camps? ( I wish that was mere snark.)
"We need a more permanent solution
to our problem"
From : http://www.script-o-rama.com/movie_scripts/j/jesus-christ-superstar-script-transcript.html
Gosh, why wouldn't members of an ethnic minority group openly hated and vilified by conservatives feel anything other than warm fuzzies and little valentine hearts and smiley faces upon hearing a conservative politician's promises of an unspecified "permanent solution" to a "problem" identified with their group?
They're just paranoid. I mean it ain't like the republican party is on record as being against them or civil rights. After all some Gays will still vote republican even after the party has shown total disregard for them. Heck fire the republicans have women candidates who support anti-contraception and oppose the ledbetter rule.
Masochists?
Lets see--90% of blacks, 70% of Latinos, 60+% of white women. A strong majority of the younger vote. Are there that many angry old white men out there?
No. See why we need to suppress the vote?
Don't forget the 12 million "illegal aliens" who will become Democrats the minute they're citizens.
I'm gay and female. The GOP doesn't want me, and the feeling is mutual. I've known this for years, and no sudden campaign promises will change my feelings. Romney would do well to give up, it ain't happening.
What I'd like is a "permanent solution" to the existence of wingnuts.
But wing nuts are cool. If you need to us long pieces of all thread you can put tape on the nuts to form vanes and speed them on and off simply by blowing air on them.
Oh, wait you mean the zealots.
After offending almost every minority group, Romney thinks he can shake the Etch A Sketch and suck up to those same groups. He must think everyone has a short memory or that video and audio disappear into the ether. I can't wait for Romney to whine about the Dem commercials using his own statements about Planned Parenthood, self deportation and his insult to the NAACP. Maybe he will stamp his feet and demand another apology. Did he think Dems were going to roll over and bow to him when the campaign started?
In another thread, the satirical website The Onion came up. Readers of this blog might appreciate the Onion's humorous take on Romney's lack of appeal to Hispanics. Google up "Romney Courts Hispanic Vote With Animated Sombrero-Wearing Parrot" for the Onion's fake news video. The gist of the joke is that Romney is trying to woo Hispanics by using a cartoon character who is a hybrid of Joe Carioca and Speedy Gonzales.
Romney es una tostada.
I'm Canadian, and if Romney wins, I will deport myself to a Scandinavian country out of fear for my own safety.
