We've been talking this week about Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) and a few of her cohorts connecting McCarthyism and Islamophobia. The Obama administration, the argument goes, is allowing the Muslim Brotherhood to "infiltrate" the American government.
As "proof" -- I use the word loosely -- Bachmann pointed to Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is Muslim.
It's cheap, it's ugly, it's offensive, and to his credit, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) did the right thing on the Senate floor this morning.
McCain also issued a press statement, praising Abedin and defending her against the baseless attacks coming from members of his own party.
I've made no secret of disappointments with the senator, but I don't mind saying how heartening it is to see him and do the honorable thing today.
For her part, Bachmann issued a press release of her own, saying her fears about "radical groups' access to top Obama administration officials" are legitimate, no matter what reality says.

John McCain let Sarah Palin run around this country stirring up racism during his campaign. GOP figured out that white hate gets the vote. The GOP have based their entire campaign this year on racism.
Bachman is following the lead of the racists in the GOP. McCain should be ashamed of himself. He gets no credit for doing what any decent human being would do.
The McCain campaign has had more access to Romney's financials than any other political entity. What did that mean old white curmudgeon see in those docs that made Sarah Palin look like a winner? AND what pertinent facts do these developments inform US about the present state of the Republican Party?
Someone needs to put Michelle Bachman out of our misery....no one needs to report her mindless babble ...she is an irrelevant pawn. The woman is demented and is an embarrassment to women...The epidemy of a dumb bitch.
I think it is long past time that Congresscritters be held responsible for putting these lies out to the world and getting countries we are trying to deal with upset with us over these same lies.
If the Congresscritters believe there is something that should be looked into, they should either take it to the proper authorities to look into or they should be brought up on ethics charges for making unfounded lies public. Batshyt Bachmann makes this a habit. Either she is brought up on ethics charges or drummed out.
IMHO, anyone that is a teapub or votes for teapubs that isn't a millionaire is a moron. The teapubs only care about the rich and being one scratch off away from being rich doesn't count folks.
Thank you John McCain for making me believe that there is at least one honorable Senator left. I am a life-long Democrat and the last few years have made me glad that I never voted Republican. You, however, have gained the respect of this 77 year old women in a way no other politician has in my life time. Thank you.
Thank you Senator McCain. You honor us all by your admirable defense of the truth. You remind us of leaders past who exhibited routine grace, selfless public service and simple humanity. Political qualities so lacking since the frightening arrival of the mindless, pathetic Bachmanns, Becks, Palins and other delusional blowhards of the lunatic right.
