Last week, President Obama delivered a routine speech in Virginia, stressing, among other things, the greatness of the American system, shaped by public and private institutions.
"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help," he said. "There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business -- you didn't build that; somebody else made that happen."
The fact that businesses didn't build American roads and bridges was so unremarkable that the comment was entirely ignored -- that is, until Fox and far-right blogs eliminated the context. Five days after the speech -- so much for "rapid" response -- the Romney campaign seized on this as evidence of the president's hatred of free enterprise. Or something.
But six days after the speech, wouldn't you know it, Romney decided Obama was right after all.
Jed Lewison flagged this clip from a Romney event in Ohio yesterday, where the Republican candidate continued to take Obama's words out of context, but proceeded to share an interesting perspective. For those who can't watch clips online, Romney said:
"There are a lot of people in government who help us and allow us to have an economy that works and allow entrepreneurs and business leaders of various kinds to start businesses and create jobs. We all recognize that. That's an important thing.... I know that you recognize that a lot of people help you in a business. Perhaps the banks, the investors. There's no question your mom and dad. Your school teachers. The people that provide roads, the fire, and the police. A lot of people help."
Romney went so far as to say yesterday Americans "couldn't have" businesses were it not for public institutions.
What's the difference between this sentiment and the Obama quote that's proof he's a radical, Kenyan, communistic Martian? That's the point: there is no difference. After Romney condemned the president's point, he proceeded to endorse it.
For what it's worth, the Obama campaign has shown no interest in reminding the political world that Romney has spent a few days hyperventilating about an out-of-context quote, only to turn around and agree with the concept he's been crying about. I suspect Obama HQ would much prefer to talk about Romney's secret tax returns, offshore finances, and Bain Capital controversy.
But whether Democrats are eager to pounce on this or not, this was a remarkable development. Consider this brief timeline of events:
* Friday: Team Romney hears Obama's comment, deems it meaningless.
* Tuesday: Team Romney reconsiders, takes Obama's comment out of context, says it proves he's un-American.
* Wednesday: Romney endorses the underlying point of Obama's comment, while still taking it out of context
You can condemn an idea or you can embrace an idea, but only Mitt Romney can do both at the same time.

Mitt Romney and his "Foreign" concepts of how the American System works.
On the Other Hand, polls put Obama's favorability in the 30's. Maybe it is the heat. Or the drought. Or sumpin'. (Teh Stupidity?)
What polls?
Which is why he's the obvious choice in November.
That was sarcasm, right?
Sigh.
Poe's Law survives another test.
The problem with your quote is who is pulling Mitt Romney's strings to do both. This man can not walk and chew gum at the same time.
I wonder if Romney shares Ann Romney view on equal pay for women:
Is this the way Romney thinks, can not tell he refuses to address the issue.
Sarah Wood writes for the Free Word Post: News That's Almost Reliable (as stated on their website). All satire aside, this way of thinking would not surprise me judging by her comments this morning.
only found it on one other site - can not get a video link to her speech.

I will not be posting it again unless I can verify by another source.
Except that his lie is working .
Everywhere I look that sound bite is played .
Here comes Jeb Bush in Ohio echoing that sound bite .
The Republicans have reduced lying to a fine art . Faux news according to one sources has mentioned it 61 times in the past two days.
"If you've got a business -- you didn't build that; somebody else made that happen."
Repeated often enough that it has become common knowledge.
We are as insulated here on the left watching MSNBC , Huffpost, Political Animal, TPM et al as are the Faux nooze watchers
They are getting through to the I -watch-Jay-Leno-because-he's witty-and-funny crowd .
In the real world out there Obama and Mitt are still virtually tied and I am seriously worried about November .
America - Too stupid for democracy.
Yes, this is the part I find so astounding. Obviously Obama's quote has been taken out of context and "re-constructed" into something else, and yet we have legions of commentators who repeat it with a straight face and manufactured outrage. I try to fathom the personal values that would enable a person to do this, and the best I can come up with is that pushin your ideological point of view is deemed more important than being truthful.
I actually saw this story evolve on Fox News. The original headline was "Obama dashes American Dream, suggests nobody achieves success alone" --which at least got the last half right. A few hours later the headline had changed to "Obama to business owners: 'You didn't build that' and by the end of the day they had gone all in with "Obama: Owners Didn't Build Business". It is just brazen, but amazingly enough, as you say, it works.
If any one believe in what Fox-News say's Is the the bigest FOOL
"America - Too stupid for democracy." This is my fear. Many people who believe the right wing are, also, alleged to be Christians. And those same people seem to believe that what they say is in the Constitution. Jesus would never have said some of the things they say. The Constitution has been amended to more closely align with the way Jesus would have thought. Women can vote, black people are not fractional people, landowners are not the only people that can vote, education is to be for everyone regardless of race and separate but equal facilities of any kind are no longer allowed (except for Augusta where, apparently blacks and women can sometimes play and caddy, but cannot join). How do they get away with that! If you join do you have to be racist!
The framers of the Constitution had lots of ideas and the final draft was designed to be changed. Many ideas did not get in the original, but as time moved along it was deemed by a majority or super majority that some things needed to change. And the document will change more for the better in the future. Who wants to live in a society where this is not the way it is?
Maybe there ought to be a law that, if people running for office, or in office lie, the they are disqualified or thrown out of office.
This is really something when these rich people think that they have done all these things on their own. That these rich people deserve more privileges and wealth than anybody else does, because they are the supposed job creators. When in reality it has been everybody else who has helped them succeed. These people are not smart, except just greedy, power craving, arrogant, hypocritical, corrupt and deceiving people. These rich people are just trying to pull a big con job on everybody else and trying to get people to think they are something special and unique, when these rich people are not. These rich people think they are the perfect Christians out there and as Jesus said these rich people would be the weeds in the field to be rooted up and thrown away. Just as Jesus knew and stated where these rich people so lost are really destined to go, because of the lack of willing to change for better things and the right things. And it will go down in history on how these rich people did nothing, but bring misery, despair, and death upon others. These rich people have shown their true selves to others as the worst type of person that can exist as they show no concern and/or caring of others beyond their own selfish gains. And no matter how the Republican’s, and extreme rich as the Romney types try to deceive people, they can never really hide the fact of who they really are.
I agree with much of what you say, Deb. However, all rich people are not alike. There are wealthy people like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet who put their money to work helping others. We may not hear as much about them because they do their good works out of the public eye.
Deb - you perpetuate a false sterotype. Hmm, yeah right, my husband and I, conservative, Christian, small business owners are just greedy - that is why we hired 3 people last year, that is why we support my widowed mother, tithe to our church, give tens of thousands to charity, support a disabled son, help support a single mother family member, volunteer, and work 70+ hours a week. Yeah, we are "these rich people... greedy, corrupt". Deb - you've got some real anger issues. What about the fact that we gave way more to charity than Obama and he made way more money than we did? We did build our business and make sacrifices for others. We did it without ever getting government aid or even a bank loan. Did Obama or you ever build a business, employee someone, put all their savings at risk to help another? So after years of scraping by and finally making the $250,000 - we are evil? Yes, there are some corrupt business owners, but they are across the board and in the minority. If you research, you will find conservatives give more to charities and to help people than liberals.
Holl, The "holier than thou and even Obama" meme really sucks.
I don't mean to be rude, but really, there are ALOT of people who made more money than you, Robme included, but your fixation on Obama really is unhealthy and you are doing the same thing you are accusing Deb of doing, and showing that you have anger issues as well.
And to say that you haven't benefited from the government in any way is intellectually disingenuous at best, or just being ignorant at worst.
And running a government is not like running a business. And your comment about Obama not building a business is just ignorant.
I wouldn't say you were evil. But I would say you really don't know as much as you think about who gives what to whom, the role of the government, Obama, or his policies.
Holl2653 are you having some guilt issues that you seem to have to justify what you do? If you feel you are not in the category I am speaking about than why would you bother even to mention anything?
Deb - I don't have any guilt issues. I'm just saying that not every successful business owner is as you painted it.
Donna - you may be right - Deb's comment did bring out some anger in me - good point - probably stress over liberals trying to paint all conservatives in the wrong light. I don't think I said that I haven't benefited from the government in any way - all American's benefit (i.e. police, fire, military, infastructure, etc.) But there is a implied notion that a successful business owner has received more benefit than others and therefore owes and owes and owes and owes.
Holl2653 what does conservative mean to you?
Holl, nothing could be further from the truth. And your last line about "owing, and owing, and owing" speaks to your lack of charity and your own selfishness, and that ever present conservative judgement of others and narrow mindedness.
You don't want to be pigeonholed, yet you want to do the same thing to those who are in need, and the role government plays in helping those in need.
"For what it's worth, the Obama campaign has shown no interest in reminding the political world that Romney has spent a few days hyperventilating about an out-of-context quote, only to turn around and agree with the concept he's been crying about"
And this is why Democrats lose. And why they're going to lose this time to a man with a 50's TV robot personality. Democrats will never learn. They will never learn.
I agree Romney may win. Obama can't run on his record, so he attacks. The latest poll by CBS/NYT shows that is not a winning formular. If Obama is proud of what he did, why not run on it?
Why can't Obama run on his record? Do you bother to read anything yourself or do you just parrot what you hear?
Read some of this if it doesn't explode your brain. Obama's record is just fine.
Romney can't run on his record: He hides from his Bain record, he doesn't discuss his governership, he can't run on his wealth and is hiding his tax returns, he can't run on set policies because he has to remain flexible to taylor his speeches to the audience. All he has to run on is bashing the president out one side of his mouth, when he isn't agreeing with him out the other.
I do read extensivly. If Obama could run on his record, why isn't he? Stimulus - questionable. Affordable Care - questionable. Finacial Reform - questionable. Negotiation ability - failure
Disgusted - I agree that Dems don't do enough to prove the lying hypocrisy of the GOP. They need to take a clip of Romney's team and/or Fox spewing the out-of-context quotes, and then say "Here's is what President Obama actually said:" and play that. Make it clear and show viewers exactly how the right is lying and misrepresenting Obama's words.
Tom, you are obviously getting all of your points from right wing sources.
The stimulus WORKED:
http://jaredbernsteinblog.com/the-recovery-act-worked-in-a-few-easy-charts/
Affordable Health Care Act is a GOOD thing:
http://www.medicareadvocacy.org/2012/05/03/affordable-care-act-in-action-people-with-medicare-continue-to-see-savings/
Is all ready saving milllions:

And since YOU Tom, are on medicare here is how the ACA will help YOU:

Financial Reform bill has all ready been a positive thing:
Citi bank will have to pay a huge fine:

tmlConsumer bureau to police credit reporting bureaus:
http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/credit/story/2012-07-16/consumer-protection-credit-scores/56259576/1
And Obama's "negotiation ability" comment, well...that is just ridiculous, Tom.
And that is just a few places to start your "reading," Tom.
And the ACA isn't even fully implemented yet and will be wonderful when it does. The ACA is all ready impacting YOU in a positive way, yet you don't even know it, or unwilling to acknowledge that it is.
I am so sick of idiots, er people like you who say you are well read about the issues coming on threads spouting absolute nonsense and debunked right wing talking points.
You read? Yes. Every piece of right wing nonsense that validates your dislike for this President.
Nobody is saying Obama is perfect. But he is a h3ll of alot better than Robme, and the GOP. And if you refuse to see it, fine. But don't come on here spouting your ignorant nonsense and expect not to get called out for it.
Bravo, Donna!
Hey Tom, let me ask you. What is it in Romney's record that you think would make him a better President? Because he doesn't seem very willing to run on his record. He's avoiding all talk of his time as Governor, and now his business record is looking awfully questionable too (and frankly doesn't reflect what a President does anyway). So what else does Mitt have to go on?
3 years with 8% unemployment, if we are still there in November, Obama will loose and deserve to.
Actually, it was the Republicans’ relentless opposition to constructive policies that has kept unemployment high, from their resistance to the 2009 stimulus to their blockage of Mr. Obama’s proposed $450 billion jobs bill in late 2011. Federal aid to states was a mainstay of both of those efforts. As the stimulus ended and further aid was delayed and denied, the effect on state budgets — and on jobs — has been catastrophic.

Hey Eric - "loose" is the opposite of "tight." The opposite of "win" is "lose." As in "you lose the spelling bee."
As for the 8% unemployment. If not for the stimulus and other Obama policies, it would be much higher, according to many experts. It would also be lower if Congress could actually support good ideas like the Jobs Acts proposed by Obama. But Boehner's and Cantor's cries of "Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!" are just smoke for their real agenda of keeping Obama from accomplishing anything at all. Such patriots, those two.
interesting...POTUS says it, and it's wrong.
Willard says it, and it's ok
And it works.
"You can condemn an idea or you can embrace an idea, but only Mitt Romney can do both at the same time."
I think that this has been disproven by the stimulus money that Republicans took while complaining about the stimuls... and Republicans complaining about welfare flexibility while requesting welfare flexibility... and complaining about the deficit while voting to repeal a law that decreases the deficit (33 times)...
You don't have to be Mitt Romney to do both at the same time. You just have to be able to spout your rhetoric with no regard for whether or not said rhetoric makes sense.
Obama can't possibly counter punch at every chunk of BS Ro-money puts up there. He will be flailing for the next 3 months if he does that and he will be broke. Due to the money deficit he has to use the smart bomb strategy, pick your targets wisely.
He's not doing that at all. The campaign I've been watching is the Romney camp responding to everything. Since the jobs numbers came out, how much time has been spent discussing them in comparison to Bain and tax returns? Romney is the one flailing.
I know that's what you expect historically from Democrats. but that is not the case this year.
It's like we live in a parallel universe or, this is one big giant episode of The Twilight Zone. Sometimes I wonder if these zombies behind him and in front of him either just don't have a brain, or can manufacture the common sense to know when this idiot Rove and Koch brother puppet is lying through his 10 million dollar teeth. He offers absolutely nothing, has no credibility because of his lies, and this country, and the world for that matter, is in for a world of hurt and despair if he actually is voted in by "no clue" fools.
This seems to me like it could be the beginning of Mitt running back to the middle, now that he's got the extreme right convinced he thinks like them. The only problem is, running back to the middle by restating what Obama has already said doesn't seem very likely to work, at least to those of us who pay attention.
The first federal land grant railroad was the Illinois Central. Illinois Central Railroad's attorney was Abraham Lincoln. In 1862 Lincoln signed the first Pacific Railway bill.
The Union Pacific got more than eleven million acres and $27 million in bonds; the Central Pacific got eight million acres and $24 million in bonds.
Millions of acres of the 19th-century railroad land grants were never sold to settlers as the U.S. Congress intended. Today this land is controlled by dozens of corporations (for example Boise Cascade, Burlington Northern, Burlington Resources, Potlach, Weyerhauser )-- some of the largest holdings of coal, oil and gas, gold, and real estate in the country are based on these transfers of public land grants.
@Tom - it's coming. It's called "pacing a campaign." I love this conservative line about "Obama's record." Complete projection. It's Mitt Romney who is completely ignoring his record as governor - because aside from "Romneycare," it's a dismal one.
There's no question on Obama's record. Recovery Act, successful - over 3 million jobs created. Jobs which all but three congressional Republicans voted against. Affordable Care act - insuring additional millions and saving lives right now, and that's just the start. Bin Laden - dead. Iraq War, ended. Relations with allies, improved. Believe me, "the record" is coming. And when the Obama campaign does start highlighting his record, Romney will do the usual - whine about it. And lie about it.
I have just had it with this amoral s#!tbag. If America elects this empty suit, I will renounce my citizenship and move to Bangladesh.
"Now on Friday, he said SUMPIN..." 0:05 Did he really say `sumpin`?
Once again TRMS show accuses Romney and the Conservatives of taking Obama out of context. Then to prove a false point, "Romney agrees with Obama" they take Romney's comments out of context with severe editing.
Romney continues to excoriate Obama for his anti business comments to this day and his further comments were that the president continues his assualt on business and the spirit that drives America and it's business people towardss excellence.
Nothing has been altered or changed in Romney's delivery or the content of his speeches as regards Obama's comments last week about "You didn't do that". Lending that yes anyone will affirm that the system is available to all as a fundamental attributes attached to the American system.
Let's use this as an exampple.
There is a 100 yard dash. Each runner has the same principle aids, the spotter, the gun that initates the race, the same track groomed to perfection, the olympic styled facility affording them the venue in which to participate, great coaching and training specialist, the judges that finalizes results and the time keeper who records the time. So all participants have the same attributes that create the opportunity to win.
But only ONE wins the race. That one may break all world records. Bobby Hayes ran the first 9.3 world record in the 60's. Carl Lewis' medals were his, his accomplishments were his. Millions of athletes run races and take their turns in events like this. But only a few are defined by world records Olympic qualifications etc.
Obama seems to be saying You, the winner of the race, You didn't win this medal/event. We did this all of us paved the way for you. Thus disqualifying the winners greatest acheivements.
Does that make sense?
But the message did NOT change. Actually Romney amplified his remarks to be even more negatively responsive to Obama's speech last week. TRMS misrepresents the facts, again.
Come On Man!
Seems to be saying? Really? You're going to tell us what the President seems to be saying, while claim that TRMS is misrepresenting facts?
And what does "prove a false point", mean?
IrishPat7,
You should try listening to Obama's words instead of the edited versions put out by Fox, and without your right-wing filters. What Obama was saying is that businesses and people who are successful are great and we applaud them, but everyone must understand that nobody gets there without benefitting in some way from the work of someone else. He's not trying to take anything away from the "winners;" he's simply reminding them that others provide value too along the way, and much of that support comes from public institutions and projects.
Manufacturers don't get their products to market without using roads, bridges, and railways that someone else built. Business people don't get the education that helps them become successful without school teachers, professors, and administrators. People don't get start-up money for businesses without willing bankers, the SBA, and investors. And so on.
When you say "Obama seems to be saying You, the winner of the race, You didn't win this medal/event," that IS the impression one would get by reading the Fox-edited version of Obama's words. That's why I say take filters off and read or listen Obama's actual words. Maybe then you'll get it in the correct context.
IrishPat7 - You are taking Obama's quotation out of context as well. The punctuation was bad, but first he talks about government infrastructure and personal connections, then said "you didn't build that". The "that" refers to the infrastructure and the personal support/development connections. Acknowledge what others have done to help you. And if you're born with a silver spoon in your mouth, at least recognize who made the spoon and stuck it in your mouth.
@IrishPat7 This is the norm. You only hear what you want to hear. This is not a question of personal achievement. The point President Obama was making was that when we set out to do something or reach a goal in our life, and we succeed at that something (business per say) or the goal, there are a lot of people who helped us get there and a lot of people to thank.
If you spoke to any Olympian in or out the record books, or any business man or woman, I am sure they would have a list as long as their arm of the people in their life who helped them reach for their dream of being successful. It's not a question of their fortitude or stamina or hard work. It's what this country is all about. We all need each other and has been so since this country was founded.
But you won't ever get it. Even if a whole lot of folks try to "help you" get it.
Actually, IrishPat7, that's not what it "seems" like at all. Way to be objective.
Are we supposed to believe it more when it comes out of Willard's mouth? Obama comes up with the good phrases and Willard capitalizes on them! What a hypocrite!
Mitt Romney: "Steve Jobs did not build Apple"
run that edited quote fox
I believe that if a network (?) Fox News propogates false news they should be fined (since those with money only understand it hurts to lose say $100,000. for each propogated false statement. Is it not a crime to knowingly perjure in court. But to knowingly propogate false statements in a public forum is not the same. News is supposed to be based on fact, if you do not use fact you lead others to make incorrect decisions; therefore, based on Fox News history it is a network of perjurors plain and simple. Fox News Mis-stating the obvious again and again!!!!!!
I agree. Fox news should get their FCC license revoked.
We didn't build that, we paid for it; probably twice.
I'm not a business owner, but my taxes and the taxes the company I work for pays all go to pay for this goverment that apparently "made" the company happen. Forget the hard work the owner and his employees put in to make the business successful. Now we are to believe the government "made" it happen. Laughable.
Look we can all read the same article and come a way with a few different opinions. What I read from the President's whole speech is that yes the business owner is successful with a great idea, ingenuity and risk. However, he did have the hard work of his employees and shouldn't they share a little in his success? Where is the trickle down to increase their salaries which strengthens and grows the middle class?
If people are not paying their fair share of taxes than that limits Government funded programs such as: Infrastructure, Teachers, Fireman, Police, SBA loans that are guaranteed by the Government and help people begin a business.
President Obama has given tax breaks to small business and wants to give tax breaks to companies and corporations to bring back jobs to the U.S. and keep jobs here. Oh wait - Republicans will not pass it.
He is not against Small Business he opposes the "Trickle Down Economic Policies" of the Republicans that have failed.
sorry it posted twice and could not delete.
Lorr - good comments. One of them, the one about Republicans not passing tax breaks for companies that bring back jobs from overseas, got me thinking about the hypocrisy of the GOP. They are all about the free market, while touting their patriotism. But their business practices contradict their claims of patriotism. They exploit the cheap labor in other countries in order to increase profits. In the process, they boost the economies of those countries, which indirectly promotes the educational system there and strengthens those countries. Do that long enough, and in enough places, and the US will inevitably fall behind; this is already showing up in our educational system, our economy, and the value of our dollar against other currencies.
So by opposing tax breaks for companies to bring jobs back here, the Republicans are saying they don't care about Americans as much as they care about corporate profits, even if it means America's standing in the world declines over time. It sounds to me like the beginning of the fall of the American empire...
Lorr - My husband and I are small business owners - Obama has not given us any tax breaks. We made more that $250,000, but not as much as Obama and yet still paid more in taxes than he did. Our employees are not outsourced either. Why can't people understand that the majority of small businesses are not these large corporations that outsource people. And corporations are corporations run by all kinds of people - liberal and conservative.
Fact remains your company would not exist without infrastructure that government provides. There is nothing laughable about asking those who made it to turn around and lend a hand to those trying to climb up the ladder after them.
Holl,
Perhaps now would be a good time to find out just what Obama is doing to help small business like yours:
http://americanheroesalliance.org/obama-administration-takes-immediate-actions-to-help-small-businesses/
http://www.rollcall.com/news/gop_blocks_senate_small_business_tax_cut_bill-216100-1.html
Now would also be a good time to find out just what the GOP is doing to help small businesses like yours:
http://www.rollcall.com/news/gop_blocks_senate_small_business_tax_cut_bill-216100-1.html
I am having a hard time believing your post; someone with a business as you claim to have should be better educated about policies that can impact your business(both positive and negative). Seems like you want to place all the blame on Obama, without really knowing anything about his policies, and none on people who are also negatively impacting your business.
Also: you can contact the U.S Small business administration:
http://www.sba.gov/ and ask them questions about your situation, but someone in your position may all ready know about this resource.
I don't think you are telling your whole story here(e.g. did you pay more in your personal taxes than Obama, or are you talking about the taxes your business paid). I really don't(kind of like a joe the plumber situation).
Holl , I agree with Donna - something seems to be missing. Did your company grow which increase revenues? Have added additional employees increasing your expenditures? Did you make more profit and take more out of the company, which also effects your personal return?
I am not trying to be nasty or rude just not understanding.
We are a very small business that is taxed as an individual. I'm not blaming Obama on anything. I'm just saying that we work hard, make a decent living, pay plenty of taxes and give plenty of money to charity. I referenced the articles listed - those don't apply to our business. We made a nice profit last year but didn't greedily spend it on ourselves as liberals would believe. We are not corrupt. We didn't outsource jobs, we didn't get aid or loans from the government. We didn't take advantage of any government assistance. Who does congress and Obama thinks pays his paycheck??? The taxpayers.
Marc - we lend plenty of people a hand - if taxes increase more - we'll have less money to help people out.
Holl,
Your post did indeed blame Obama.
And I can tell that you did not reference any of my links because they are helpful sources of information, and you didn't even bother to contact the U.S. Small Business Administration to ask them anything, so stop lying.
And you are trying to sound like some sort of saint, then using language like "...as liberals would believe." Careful, your right wing slip is showing.
And so what you "didn't get loans from the government?" You benefited from the government in many ways. And the fact that you don't acknowledge that shows that you are not who you say you are, or are ignorant of policies that benefit your business.
And your fixation on Obama really brings out those right wing nut slip of yours.
And your last statement to Marc really shows that you are a joe the plumber type: you are being dishonest in these posts.
Mitt Romney - the Undisputed King of Suck and Blow.
agnzlz79 -- I don't see anywhere in Obama's remarks where he says that the goverment made" the company happen or forget the hard work the owner and his employees put in to make the business successful. This is what I find so odd about this issue -- where are folks coming up with this reading of Obama's remarks? Did you read what Obama actually said? Obama praised the hard work and success of business owners. He was saying it is a good thing that government invests in infrastructure nd education because this supports businesses. "You didn't build that" refered to the bridge down the road, which was built by your fellow citizens buit which helps you be a success.
Obama was stating the obvious -- I don't know why anyone would disagree with him, and indeed Romney comes out a few days later and says essentially the same thing.
Romney and all his surrogates, starting with Fox, remind me of Beavis and Butthead. If Pres. Obama said "We'll give them tit for tat," guess what B&B would say. "Heh, heh heh, the president said 'tit,' heh, he, heh. He must watch porno, heh, heh, heh." Fox would then write a headline saying: "Pornographer-in-Chief threatens revenge on Romney."
They all appear to be from some universe where up is down, right is wrong, and everything is what I say it is. They couldn't tell the truth if -- or maybe UNLESS -- their multi-million dollar livelihoods depended on it.
