The suspected Aurora shooter will be in court today.
After Aurora, the President has no plans to propose new gun laws. Bill Kristol thinks that's foolish.

I think you should look into why police were shooting at a crowd that had children and released an attack dog on the crowd, which by the way almost got a baby as it ran over the baby's stroller. Very sad stuff that needs to stop. You would also be the first major network host to share this with the nation. http://youtu.be/MST4RhWdlMQ
I feel like this brutality problem has gotten out of hand the last six months or so and that the media just hasn't been paying enough attention to it. Our civil servants should be held accountable. The police should not be allowed to trample all over citizens like that and the media has done little to report on it. Until this problem receives mass attention nothing will be done.
Having lived through civil rights, vietnam, and many other social movements, it stuns me that mothers who are having their children killed every day, not just in atrocities such as Aurora and Columbine, don't unite and March against gun violence. We are monitored on the web on what our food preferences are, yet no one will march for limited ammunition purchases, a ban against assault weapons? As a citizen and parent, do 1 million more innocent men, women and children have to be killed before we put aside out political biases, and give our politicians the backbone they need to stand up against the NRA??
We can march, but more importantly we can VOTE!!
basementlol123 banned, reregistration of banned user mom+dads basement.
As an individual voter, I can and will vote for:
- candidates for stronger arms control
- laws for stronger arms control
But it's not enough.
Despite this latest tragedy, people are still hesitant to support ideas that might help prevent these kinds of events, resulting in politicians that are reluctant to put such ideas in action.
How many more people have to die before we start using common sense?
How many more children do we have to bury before we start using common sense?
How much more money do we need to give to the weapons companies and lobbies?
When does a weapons hobbyist say, "Enough is enough?"
I hate to agree with FOX, but I think Kristol is right. I'm afraid that Pres. Obama is worried that even reasonable gun control proposals (see Barbara Gsovski, above) will be used by the Fast & Furious whackos as proof of their conspiracy theories, in a way that might cost him key votes in swing states. His guns and religion comment will make him more vulnerable to such use. I'm wondering if he might pick up an equivalent amount of votes for showing leadership on an important social/political issue. On the other hand, such a stance might jeopardize dem. senate & house candidates in states where the NRA has openly bought the political process. It's complicated ... ... .
Kristol has an ulterior motive with his statement. If Pres.Obama start's talking gun control he stand's a much better chance of losing and Kristol know's it.If the Pres. proposes anything Romney will claim it's to harsh.
You actually want Obama to show leadership on a devisive issue?
Tom, I guess the snark made you feel good, but it has no basis in fact. From Day 1, everything Obama has undertaken has had almost a tidal wave of "conventional wisdom" against it - Recovery Act, auto industry rescue, healthcare reform, financial reform, education reform, expedited restitution for BP oil spill victims, pursuing bin Laden, etc. -- so, the "leadership" snark falls a little flat.
If this is so sensible, then why isn't Kristol urging his own Republican colleagues to take up this issue. This is a Kristol Trojan Horse designed to hurt Democrats no matter what they do if people have listened to Kristol. Fortunately, only his crazy Faux audience will pay any attention so not much damage will be done.
Anyone who wants sensible gun-control and ammunition-control needs to support political representatives (local, state, federal) who agree with them.
It doesn't look like the Supreme Court would uphold any gun or ammunition control legislation. The 2012 election will have consequences we will have to live with for years.
A 100round drum magazine was recovered at the scene, able to fire 50 to 60 rounds a minute without reloading. Same was true at Arizona Congresswoman Giffords shooting. The last time Democrats voted for gun control they lost their seats. It seems the NRA owns their vote by contribution and retribution. I would think just a change in ammunition size magazines/clips would just be a common sense. However, common sense is not so common. The NRA holds court in this democracy. Actually I support the 2nd since I saw a Chinaman in a square standing up to a tank. But as I think back it was the fax and electronics that changed things there.
the Anaheim PD response was over the top ... if it's not evil citizens taking out people, it's those who are supposed to protect & serve ... smh ...

So, I didn't want to leave this post without a response, because The Newsroom is fantastic, not so much for the fictional character stories, but because of the way it weaves real world events into and behind the veil of a (fictional) newsroom.
Unless I missed it, I do wish we could get some kind of commentary from the TRMS about that show, though I think the recent Dan Rather interview coincides with him also talking about The Newsroom on other sites:

I suspect we won't get Rachel's take on it unless someone asks her about it somewhere else (i.e. not on her own show).
Here's an edited transcript of that amazing 3.5 minutes. A full transcript of that scene can be found at:

Jason Alexander tweeted about gun control and the response from those opposed to any sort of laws controlling guns was vile, as if he had taken the guns from their hands and shot them!
As long as the US is the number one exporter/maker of weapons we will have lax gun laws. If we make 'em we own 'em.
kneejerk reactions will hurt the president. look what the assault weapon ban did in 94 for the dems--Clinton facing a sea of red. What we need is more mental health . Some people will say, "where were all the tough guys with their guns at the theatre?"--The large metroplex up in phoenix has a No Guns policy so any law abiding person would have left their gun in the car. And , of course, where are the cops when you need them..? responding within 90 secods AFTER the place is shot up is not good enough--but the tradeoff there is living in a police state. It was pretty obvious that NOBODY but the gunman had a gun at the theatre that night.
Screaming and demanding gun laws after a tragedy make for good sound bites, but lousy laws. The time for discussing gun control laws is not after a tragedy and not just before an election, but in the off election year time with a committee made up of members not getting their pockets padded by the NRA. I know, it will be a very small committee. If you look at who is against gun control laws, you are going to find it usually is ONLY the NRA.
So, Pres. Obama proposes a gun control bill to what effect? The Tea Party House - controlled by conservative gun nuts - is going to pass it? No - they would use it to fundraise with endless variations of "See, we were right. The n--er is coming for your guns!!!!!"
It's up to voters in conservative districts to stop sending gun nuts to Congress. In other words, nothing will change any time soon as long as "the people" get what they want. Which is guns, guns, guns.
I think that if President Obama actually tried to implement the gun regulations he was talking about on Fox, he would spin 180 on it so fast it listening to his comments would give you whiplash. Which is a shame because all he said was NO CIVILIAN needs a fully automatic rifle which frankly, I agree with.
Kristol's statement is an obvious trap. Why doesn't he instead call for the Republican leadership to endorse gun control legislation? If the GOP were to have the leading hand in writing such laws, they will be easier to adopt. Any gun control laws or regulations originated by a Democrat will be seen as a threat to "freedom", and will get nowhere.
As the Vulcans say: "Only Nixon can go to China."
Here's a bbc article about how the rich have hidden enough wealth to equal the U.S. economy and Japanese economy rolled into one. Considering Mitt Romney's tax havens and who his policies and ideas are pandering to, I think its pretty relevant.

Here's a little review from the BBC about a book concerning America's fascination with the apocolypse. I think this is very interesting and is an ideology that affects much of american politics and culture, both on the right and the left sides of politics.

Maybe we should let them repatriate their money like Ron Paul said so they bring it home and invest it into the economy? That's just an idea that might help start some job creation if we could just get them to bring the money home.
that shooter had enough ammo and explosives to level a whole neighborhood - why, with all of our post-9/11 'anti-terrorism' policies...why did no red flag pop up?
when i'm sick and need an over-the-counter medication to unstuff my head, i have to show ID and i am only able to purchase a limited amount. why? because people use it to make drugs - which can kill if used improperly.
why are ammunitions and weapons not regulated the same way?
