Today's installment of campaign-related news items that won't necessarily generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:
* In a big surprise, Rep. Steven LaTourette (R-Ohio), a relative moderate, confirmed this morning that he will retire at the end of the year and is not seeking re-election.
* Julian Castro, the Democratic mayor of San Antonio and widely considered a rising star, will deliver the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention. Castro, just 37 years old, will be the first Latino to ever serve the keynote speaker at a major-party convention.
* Mitt Romney's super PAC unveiled a new television ad touting his work at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. Romney's management of the games has been the subject of increasing scrutiny of late.
* Romney also released a minute-long bio spot, which includes the candidate urging Americans to "believe in the America you built," which is a not-so-subtle reference to the out-of-context line Romney is building his entire presidential campaign around.
* Massachusetts' Elizabeth Warren will not deliver the keynote address at the Democratic convention, but she will receive a prominent slot, speaking immediately before former President Bill Clinton on Wednesday, Sept. 5.
* The Democratic ground game is picking up speed in Nevada, where Dems have increased their registration advantage over Republicans.
* Newark Mayor Cory Booker conceded late last week that he's "strongly considering" seeking statewide office in the near future, but it's unclear whether he'd run for governor or the U.S. Senate.

What? Democrats don't want Warren giving us a reprise of the "you didn't build that" meme, she so famously made public?
Heh.
Or maybe (but don't count on it) they finally realized that having a liar, fraudster, and racist like Elizabeth "Cherokee Princess" Warren giving the keynote address just wouldn't work very well come campaign time.
Wondering why there hasn't been any mention about Hillary Clintons' speech yesterday. I found it to be very enlightening. I just hope they aren't going to suggest that she's just trying to run for the 2016 election, which I believe to be a cop-out, and very degrading to perhaps, one of our best Secretary of States'. I would not be surprised if it were to be found out that it was a man who is behind the allegations that she is just campaigning. It must be extremely hard for some people to believe that she is just doing the best job that she can. Some elected officials actually work for their paycheck. Some claim that they have all the answers but, refuse to share them with the rest of the country, what are they waiting for, a special invitation? If certain politicians say they know how to help the poor and the Middle class, why aren't they? Won't get fooled again.
Sorry, I just spotted the post about Hillary.
There is something electrical about the Castro brothers. I'm looking forward to hearing Julian speak at the convention.
sheesh...after being stuck in a gerrymandered district with latourette for 10 years and finally getting out after the 2010 redrawing...now he quits!
I can't figure out where else to ask this but for weeks now, I'm not getting the Blog or Morning Maddow or any of Rachel's stuff on FB. I haven't unsubscribed - have there been any problems on your end?

"Mitt faced a $400 million budget deficit and turned that around into a $100 million surplus . . ."
Yes, he certainly did. Because of $350 million in direct U. S. Government grant largesse and several billion dollars in federal earmarks for infrastructure serving the Olympics sites. That Mitt. Boy, he really knows how to get things done without asking the government for help. (Eyes rolling)
Should the Republicans take over this November and repeal Obamacare, can we now count on Mitt replacing it with a mirrored version of the Israeli health care system he so lavished praise on the other day - yes, the mother of all socialized healthcare!
Stop using the words "out of context" and use the word "lie."
Booker was pasted hard when he took sides for anti Bain ads, he's stuck in statewide politics from now on, serves him right and left as a Wall Street teat monger.
