After reporting on President Obama's auto-industry rescue for a few years, I thought I'd heard just about every Republican argument. Mitt Romney, however, has a new attack that I, must admit, I didn't see coming.
In this new commercial, we're introduced to Al Zarzour, who owned a car dealership in Lyndhurst, Ohio. When the Obama administration intervened, some dealerships were closed as part of the restructuring, and Zarzour's was apparently one of them.
In other words, according to the attack ad, Obama rescued the American auto industry and saved millions of jobs, but some dealerships were scuttled, which means the policy was bad ... or something. (That every dealership would have been closed had the president failed to act is apparently irrelevant.)
But the galling aspect of this is Romney's unmitigated chutzpah. The Republican initially condemned Obama's rescue policy. Then Romney changed his mind and took credit for Obama's rescue policy. Now, the former governor is back to condemning the policy he recently tried to say was his idea all along.
Even by Romney standards, this is twisted, and more than a little ridiculous. It's almost as if he assumes voters are such hopeless fools, Americans will believe literally anything.
Obama for America spokesperson Frank Benenati said this morning, "Let's get this straight -- the very person who argued for the US auto industry to go bankrupt, something that would have caused more than a million jobs lost and utter economic devastation in the Midwest, is now trying to attack the President on how it was handled? This ad in Ohio is a new low for the Romney campaign."
I'd add, by the way, that Romney might want to avoid lines of attack that involve closing businesses and laying off workers. Just saying.

Mitt Romney is the worst possible joke on the American people!!
The reason Rmoney can do this is the fact Americans are just down right ignorant about how the economy as a whole and business works as well as innumeracy. No one understands that in a bankruptcy, which is alien to most Americans because of changes in the bankruptcy code in the 90's, a company is actually lent money to pay off debts and put the business in forward. Americans have no idea how a loan is actually done or even their own mortgages. Just think how many people thought subprime was a great idea because the mortgage lender told them they could renew into a regular one w/ six months payments because they could refinance of because the value f their home went up. When in the history of America did property ever go up that fast!
And there are few in the Dummycrat party who can convincingly go and speak on the economy. This weakness goes into the WH as well. Nor in recent history have we ever had anyone talk about it w/ any conviction. Dowd and Franks were both captures of either the insurance or housing industry and never sent a warning about excesses. Until the Democratic Party can make a coherent, not hodge podge, response to economic policy as a whole, even if it is only in the Taliban sense of taxes and government bad-free market good, they will always seen as a psrty of people who only want sinecures.
Today on MSNBC I heard 80 of 88 counties in Ohio have car dealerships still selling cars. Nothing, nobody is perfect so some people have been affected badly. The other millions of auto workers have UNION jobs, benefits & pensions. "Mitt the Twit" said on video, President Obama used his plan to save the auto industry so he's taking credit for it. LIAR! We all know Romney really said, let the auto industry go bankrupt...
The President took action before bankruptcy was filed & the industry is thriving, no thanx to Willard.
I must edit this phrase from the article: "It's almost as if he assumes voters are such hopeless fools, Americans will believe literally anything." Lets change this phrase to a truthful one: " It's almost as if he KNOWS GOP voters are hopeless fools, contemporary GOP voters & racists (sadly they can be grouped together) will believe literally anything THAT THEY ARE TOLD BY THEIR GOP LEADERS".
Now that is exactly the way it should have been written.
Every time I read crap like this I get a bit more disillusioned about this great country and our system. To really think GOP in Washington believe in Mitt Romney as future Presidential material is scary at best. I am not a great fan of either party and to see obvious distortions and lies by people who are supposed to have CHARACTER and maybe lead us makes me afraid of where we are going as a country. The system of politics as a whole is crap and needs to change, but, I fear we are traveling the same road as Rome did long ago and our destiny is written. Am I wrong but does Romney have that same Deer in the Headlight look Bush had???? Bet the GOP has a Clone Farm somewhere where they churn out these Products.
If G.M. and Chrysler had gone down how many dealerships would have been effected?
