How important is reproductive rights and women's health to President Obama's re-election campaign? For the third time in less than a month, the Democratic campaign has released a television ad on the issue, putting women's rights up front and center.
In this new spot, viewers are introduced to two women, one of whom says, "This is not the 1950s. Contraception is so important to women. It's about a woman being able to make decisions." The other explained, "I think Mitt Romney's really out of touch with the average woman's health issues.... I don't remember anyone as extreme as Romney."
The spot also shows Romney twice saying he intends to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood.
To reiterate a point from last week, it's fascinating to see Obama's team focus so heavily on women's health -- an issue that, as recently as the spring, Republicans thought they might leverage as a culture-war wedge against the president.
Will the 2012 race be defined by the culture war? Almost certainly not. But there are still plenty of voters who care deeply about social issues, and who were outraged by the "war on women" agenda pushed by GOP officials for much of the year. Obama and his team clearly believe they have the upper hand on reproductive rights this year, and the fact that Democrats are on the offensive speaks volumes about the efficacy (or lack thereof) of the right's anti-choice, anti-contraception, anti-Planned Parenthood agenda of late.
According to the Obama campaign, this new ad began airing in Ohio, Florida, Colorado, Nevada, North Carolina, Iowa, and Washington, D.C. over the weekend.

The GOTP started with these "culture wars". Their efforts have yielded 39(?) abortion bills by Congress, vaginal ultra-sounds in the states along with outright denial of abortion in Mississippi! The hypocrisy in their cry for "life of the unborn" is stunning as they're trying to kill off Social Security/Medicare/ACA - all of which helps the lives that are currently walking around.
Hypocrisy thou art the GOTP!
Life is sacred. That is, from the moment of conception, until birth.
Then it's your personal damn responsibility, what do you expect, the taxpayer to pay for all those kids you decided to have even though you're broke and unemployed?
Why should I pay for all those poor kids - food stamps and free healthcare and public education... what, you people haven't heard of family planning and contraceptives? Oh wait...
(There's also the irony of being "pro-life" and also pro-death-penalty, pro-guns and pro-wars, but that's for another day.)
Steve,
I watch FOX like I would a sex-offender in the area, just to know where the danger is and what it's up to. R. Priebus says Mitt is some awesome guy who gave away his father's inheritance to charity and started with nothing and now has a beautiful family and five sons....and so on. You know, a good ol American rags-to-riches by your own bootstraps kind of thing. A "what do you mean I didn't build this" story. How much of that is true?
This PolitiFact piece may be somewhat enlightening (though it is a sketch, at best). In a nutshell, Mitt Romney was already a very wealthy man when his father died in 1995 but growing up wealthy certainly has its privileges.
Whatever it takes.
It is so absolutely refreshing to see Democrats kick Romney right where it hurts.
No women for you Romney.
And don't even try with Ann "You People" Romney
Ba ha ha! "This is not the 1950s" however, if these clowns had their way it would be the 9th century..
Mitt Rmoney 9! The you people's candidate!
R. Priebus on FOX (responding to the horrible, gut-wrenching, evil, arrogance and deceit of the destructive democrats calling for Mitt's tax returns and claims that Romney didn't pay) basically says:
Romney is some kind of American legend and hero. A guy who gave his father's entire inheritance to charity and started with nothing. Built a business and has a beautiful family with five incredible sons...and so on. A real rags to riches tale, pull yourself up by your own bootstraps stuff.
How much of this is true, or how true is it. I think I know, but it worries my that the spokesperson for the republican party can glare with such apparent anger/disgust and personal offense-and then describe Romney as a started with nothing guy, just like anyone else...taking a how-dare-you tone. These guys get paid too much to be liars, they're not even good at it.
Keep up the good work GOPers! Send us those unwanted women, those unwanted homosexuals, those unwanted older folks, students and inner city dwellers who do not drive so they have no drivers licences. Yes Sir remind everyone how you oppose democracy and freedom. Tell us again how you want to force your belief upon us all.
See you in November.
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Explains the tea party to a tee huh?
