After spending the last several months paying attention to Mitt Romney's habitual dishonesty at a granular level, I've become largely inured to his more routine, casual lies. Some of the deliberate falsehoods are just too common to get upset about.
But once in a while, Romney tells a lie so blatant and offensive that it raises questions anew about the candidate's character and what standards of decency he's prepared to abandon to advance his ambitions.
As Rachel explained on the show on Thursday, voting rights in Ohio have been a mess in recent cycles, and new voter-suppression tactics imposed by state Republican lawmakers are inviting "chaos" at the polls this fall. Of particular interest is a state policy that restricts early-voting rights: active-duty troops can vote up to three days before Election Day, but no one else.
To that end, President Obama's campaign filed a lawsuit a few weeks ago, asking a federal court to "restore in-person early voting for all Ohioans during the three days prior to Election Day." Three weeks later, Romney came up with a new response to the lawsuit, posting this message to Facebook:
"President Obama's lawsuit claiming it is unconstitutional for Ohio to allow servicemen and women extended early voting privileges during the state's early voting period is an outrage. The brave men and women of our military make tremendous sacrifices to protect and defend our freedoms, and we should do everything we can to protect their fundamental right to vote. I stand with the fifteen military groups that are defending the rights of military voters, and if I'm entrusted to be the commander-in-chief, I'll work to protect the voting rights of our military, not undermine them."
Got that? Obama wants all eligible Ohio voters, including servicemen and women, to have the same ability to vote, which Romney says, in writing, means Obama is trying to "undermine" the troops' ability to vote.
This is as loathsome a lie as Romney has told all year -- and given his record, that's not an easy threshold to meet.
It's important to realize that this isn't a matter of opinion. CNN's headline over the weekend said, "Romney campaign jabs at Obama over voting rights suit." The headline on the Politico homepage yesterday said, "Obama, Mitt camps spar on military voting."
No. Wrong. No one is "jabbing" or "sparring." One candidate lied and got caught. Full stop.
Indeed, when pressed, Romney's spokesperson could point to "no place in Obama's lawsuit that seeks to restrict the rights of military voters," and Romney's legal counsel failed to "offer evidence that Obama's lawsuit would make it tougher for members of the military to vote."
After the campaign's dishonesty was exposed, Romney put a twist on his lie, saying Obama now opposes giving the troops special treatment. But even by Republican standards, this is insane -- by this reasoning, Romney supports a policy that discriminates against military veterans in Ohio who would be legally prohibited from the same early-voting rights as active-duty servicemen and women.
Does Romney want to deny special treatment for veterans of foreign wars? Does Romney think it's befitting a Commander in Chief to deny equal voting rights to those who put their lives on the line to defend the United States?
Yesterday, the Republican presidential campaign said the Obama campaign's lawsuit calling for equal voting rights is "despicable."
It's as if words no longer have any meaning, and Americans politics has become so blisteringly stupid, candidates believe they can say literally anything and get away with it.

But when it comes to delivering such obvious bold face lies to the brave military men and women who allow Romney to sleep at night and take his cars on elevator rides, this is where voters really need to give pause, to say the least, and ask themselves if this is the kind of candidate they really want for president. Say what you will about Obama, but directly lying to the military is not on his political agenda.

The media (including Rachel) loves trying to tear Romney a new one every chance they get. Romney occasionally gives them the opening they need but if too much time has transpired they’re not at all above fabricating a story (not a report, a story) from half-truths, innuendos, and rumors. There was a time when a rumor never would be seen in the media, but, the need for journalists to see their name on the “by-line” eventually superseded the need for fact confirmation.
Now, instead of a grizzly, graphic tv feed of some horrific tragedy stopping at the control room of some network because it is so gruesome (with the intent of “editing it down” so that Ward & June Cleaver don’t lose their TV dinners in their laps), they just interrupt what you’re watching, apologize for the interruption and give a quick “warning” that the pictures or video you are about to see are “raw footage” that “may be graphic” and then on to the carnage while, in the back of the control room everybody is “high-fiving” each other because they got the “report” out on the air 45 seconds before any other network (this one IS a report because no editing occurred, though, in this case it SHOULD have!).
Honestly, Soffy, when you say the investigating has been done by Rachel, you, of course, mean her staff, right? She may do some investigating but more likely she is being bombarded with so much info from her staff that she needs a producer (she is an on-air personality, after all) just to sort it all out. Obviously, this staff knows what she’s looking for in a story but, nevertheless, it is they, and not Rachel that assembles said story for the public. Most of these people you call “so-called journalists” are actually on-air personalities who sit in front of a camera to report the aforementioned stories.

Can't help but think everyone is bought or too afraid of the Koch bros. and big business who pretty much controls a lot in this country.
There is a core of anti-Obama voters who just don't care if Mitt lies. They want Obama out, full stop.
Fortunately that group represents far less than a popular majority or an Electoral College victory. And they are about equally matched with dedicated progressives who want Obama's second term.
That leaves the persuadable middle, the low information voter. And right now, even with the MSM's reluctance to call a liar a liar, that group is starting to pay attention to the facts and swinging away from Mitt.
On Nate Silver's "538" blog, Obama's chance of beating Romney has gone up from 2-to-1 ten days ago, to 3-to-1 today. I like those odds.
The Rev Jerry Falwell got caught lying about President Carter in his reelection campaign. Rev. Falwell responded: "The end justifies the means." Republicans have had no problem telling outright lies for decades if it means they might win back the Whitehouse. Win at any cost even if you have to tell lies. I lost all respect for Fallwell at that time. Now I have no respect left for Romney and company.

They are outraged at the thought that somebody "might" lie about Romney, but where were they all when so many of their own were -- and still ARE -- lying about where President Obama was born? Where is their righteous indignation over the lies about his birth certificate?

This culminated in the almost-disenfranchisement of several American citizens who had been born and raised in this country--of various ethnic heritages such as Italian, Jewish, AND East Indian (and who had peacefully been voting FOR FIFTY YEARS)--until enough publicity forced their stories into the ever-reluctant media embrace.
NOTE: This "severe questioning" and calling into question these folks'---(American citizens, every one!) entire lives---did not include ONE MEXICAN-heritage citizen, LOL!
In Texas, Attorney General Holders' lawsuit announcement IS ON EVERY SINGLE VOTING MACHINE, and on leaflets passed out to Democrats AND Republicans, well in advance of Election Day. In May, that sign was there, when I went to vote---guaranteeing that my vote was just as viable as was any Republican's vote.
This, is so that if people voting on ANY Election Day---local OR national--get a "No you can't vote" response from Republicans, they will KNOW that's illegal, and be able to get a National Guard-person to guarantee them their rights.

You would think those that profess to stand up for the Constitution would do so. The 14th amendment, section 1 states "...nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." Equal protection under the law means means just that; everyone being treated the same. There is no justification for any law to treat any citizen differently than any other. It's a shame that those that hold themselves to the constitution can not see this whether is be gays getting married or civilians being able to vote early.

So, why try to stop the early vote for active military? Why not allow these men and women, many overseas, the longer voting like many other states have and then work to increase the voting time for all? Do the part both sides agree on first, let active military have extended time due to their service.

I don't know where you are getting that view from. As it stands now, active military can vote early, no one is proposing to end that. The President is suing to ensure that everybody else retains the same right. If that lawsuit fails, it doesn't mean that no one gets to vote early. Unless I read something wrong.

The new law did NOT add some new early voting period for the military, it just took away that early voting for everybody other than the military. If the lawsuit is successful it would restore this early voting period for everybody, INCLUDING the military.
Okay, this isn't hard. Try to follow along.
No one is trying to stop early voting for military types. Nothing in the Obama campaign's lawsuit seeks to have that right taken away from members of the military. Indeed, not one word in the lawsuit can possibly even be construed as seeking that. Removing that right is not within the realm of possible remedies for the judge given the way the lawsuit is framed.
Instead, all the lawsuit seeks is to have the same early voting period now limited to people in the military expanded to include people not in the military. That's the way the law worked before Republicans took over the state legislature and decided there was entirely too much of this "voting" business occurring and sought to add restrictions to keep the wrong types, i.e. people more likely to vote for Democrats, from doing it it.

I started reading 1984 recently and had to stop. It was so close to what is happening now it scared me.
I had a very similar experience when I recently re-read it, Mrs. Harrison. I did manage to finish it, but I had horrible chills throughout much of it. It's almost as though Orwell traveled in time and reported back on the current actions of the Republican party. The passages on doublethink were particularly prescient.
The difference is that we have a huge number of people in this nation who are willingly and voluntarily imposing upon themselves the kind of thought control and reality denying mental disciplines that Orwell thought it would take the compulsion of a pervasive omniscient totalitarian police state to impose on people.
I guess the common element between the book and our reality is a propaganda machine that manufactures fear out of nothing. Turns out, whipping up fear and hatred of
EurasiaEastasia and the insidious agents of Goldstein is enough to get about a third to a half bellyfeeling Ingsoc without having to add fear of being vaporized by the Thought Police to the mix.For societal control: replace IngSoc with the "private sector" and its growing database,

Recommend everyone bombard CNN and any/all other 'news' outlets who need help getting the details straight. Nothing moves the media more than outraged listeners - countless companies dropped advertising on Rushbo's program when they heard from people. Mitt Romney was bad for Massachusetts - when we said good riddance, and wasn't with the 'hope' of seeing him in the Oval Office.

the ethics of a modern business leader such as Romney is that "if it's legal, it's ethical". Since in most cases it is legal to lie (especially in political contexts), then it is perfectly ethical.

If you want to lose all hope for the US, go the Facebook discussion of this on Mitt Romney's page. Person after person is explaining the lawsuit, including links to newspaper articles, Snopes, and the complaint itself and the general response from Romney supporters? "Nobama is a socialist who hates the military and is trying to keep them from voting!" Truth doesn't matter, reality doesn't matter.

This election is not about the economy. it's about integrity. Will you vote someone like this in office and assume that he will never lie to you? Romney in the White house will be the biggest punch inthe gut our country could take. Could you imagine how this 2 facd lying approach will go over in foreign affairs? All the good Obama has done there will be erased.
