Tonight's guests:
- Eugene Robinson, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for The Washington Post
- Michael Moore, Academy Award-winning filmmaker, author, "Here comes trouble"
The demands on Julia's skills exceeded the bounds of time and space today so I got to man the camera for tonight's video with TRMS executive producer Bill Wolff. Mad with power I tried two experiments: One was to try to softer side of the light reflector we've been using to make it look less like Bill works in a cave. I think it didn't work as well as the shiny side Julia's been using.
The other experiment (really Bill's idea if you watch the video) is to see if you, the viewer, now informed of tonight's stories, can guess any of the phrases that will be used in the graphic that appears behind Rachel (called the RP or "rear projection graphic"). I didn't think far enough ahead to be able to offer a prize, so we'll call this one for bragging rights. Based on the stories Bill describes in the video below, can you guess any of the RPs?
Here's the audio viewing companion to set the mood. (Note: The music is not a RP clue.)
I also accept the blame for the low audio. Turn it up!

Much better color! Wasn't so much that he looked like he was in a cave, he just a very, very red, red face; basically like W.C. Fields with high blood pressure. Congrats!
You know that must be what these extremist of hatred think in that if they get everything their way everything would be perfect. But in reality, it wouldn’t be and things would be much worse. If women had no rights as in the past and had to be only subservient to men, then you would see a rise in domestic abuse to women and children. A result of this would be from a much lower income and more children causing additional burdens on people. Of course in addition, it would be a much worse situation where rich people are causing even more problems that really leave people in misery and despair as people are struggling just to feed their many children, because of no birth control. And the one thing rich people want to do is pay as low a wages they can get away with and no benefits or safety in the work place. Also, add in no controls on environmental protections and you have the developing wasteland that causes people to get sick and die a long with loss of food supplies as Global Warming runs unchecked. Indeed, these republicans, extremists of hatred, and rich people have got to be some really sick-minded people. Everything that is gone over with what these people would do is a total disaster to the world and anybody with common sense could never even consider letting such people as this to get away with this crap, since it is literally so dark and awful. Of course, it doesn't take much to figure out who is destroyers of our very planet and everything on it.
How far do we go before we wake up and start doing things in the right ways to save our planet and everything on it?
Deb,
I don't know, but I don't think we or this planet has a lot of time left! I don't think our great-grandchildren are going to enjoy the same lifestyle we've enjoyed!!
Will, if you're having trouble with the audio and lighting, maybe you could ask a friend who works in television to help you out. I hear those tv techs are great with that stuff.
Oh, and "rear projection"? Isn't that what Buzzfeed keeps posting with all those clever close-up shots of nearly nude athletes?
But that is the whole attitude with the rich they don’t care about other people, except to make more profit. And the end result is these rich people end up killing people. Anything Romney did at Bain capital was only to make huge profits at the cost of others. Calling Romney a murderer is just putting it too lightly, when you see what these rich people have done in this world, it is an atrocity beyond comparison. Romney is no different than the other rich bums that are doing the same thing even today. Romney is just the typical example of what others are also doing.
Best news I've heard tonight: Trump and Gingrich are going to do "something major" during the Republican convention.
Gingrich - whose solution to high health care costs is divorce and Trump - the great businessman (and birther) who's gone bankrupt 4 times! Yep, these people will convince the independents that Romney is the guy to vote for!!
So on todays show, Maddow can only HATE on Romney (yes Maddow is extremely hateful to anyone without her "educated views"), I hope Romeny throws out his tax returns in all of your faces thats the worst you have on him. Maddow if you were not a fake you would say that Romeny is what he is A GREAT GUY!!! you did not do a single negative show on OBAMA because you love sucking on the power nipple. gosh Maddow I try watching your show cause you swear you know what the hell your talking about. BUT EVERY SINGLE SHOW IS THE SAME. YOU SAY BOW DOWN TO THE DEMOCRATS. oh btw on women contraception. My girlfriend has not payed a DIME for it in three years cause it is accessable everywhere for free (tell that to that dummy FLUKE i think thats her name you know the dummy that paid thousands of dollars for stuff you can get for free) YOU MUST BE THE DUMBEST PERSON TO GO TO STANFORD, OR you ARE A BIG FAT LIAR, A LIAR to THE AMERICAN PUBLIC... WHICH IS YOU WITCH!!!!!!!!!!!! GO JUMP ON YOUR BROOM TO YOUR WOMEN CAVE. Give one negative marks to OBAMA and his CRAP record, there are plenty to go on. YOU ARE A limpwristed follower ur a problem not a cause
There's a Woman Cave? WHERE?!
Don't you hold out on me you beautiful misunderstood special snowflake, you!
Where is this woman cave??? And contraception is free everywhere in America? Uh...really? Are you just making that up? [ Does free contraception rhyme with bapstinence? ]
Look at that the TROLL voted up his own post.....LOL so transparent....do everyone a favor Danny, tie one of those rubbers that you think are the contraception thats the big controversy around your neck and... oh you get the picture!
I'm actually a senior at Allen High School and freaked out when I saw our Coliseum on TRMS tonight! Called up everyone I know. They were a bit less enthused than I was.
The stadium was paid for by bonds and was voted on a long time ago. I know this because our school has been in dire financial straits thanks to lack of state funding (Texas, oh Texas, all hail the mighty state...). Also, our town is growing at a stupidly high rate. My graduating class numbers about 1200+ students. I personally haven't felt it because AP classes tend to be smaller, but I've heard there are like 30 students in on-level/required classes. The district has had to hire several new teachers. All of this creates the perfect fiscal storm.
They've cut down on how much one can print in libraries or classrooms due to ink and paper costs. There are certain websites that we use for online classwork that they wanted us to use for free, but they're having to charge each student instead. I believe they are removing Higher Level IB Math from the curriculum (Mine will be the last class in Allen taking it) and are thinking of gutting our Gifted and Talented Programs. They used to reduce school hours on exam days and seniors would not have to show up that day. Well, since the school gets financial aid based on attendance, they've been REALLY cracking down on that! We students have not yet exhausted the infinite potential for "they have to scrimp on plumbing/paper/some essential or other while we're building a 60 MILLION DOLLAR STADIUM NEXT DOOR." The teachers are always quick to remind us that those are two separate funds and even if they stopped construction a long time ago, the money couldn't be touched.
On the other hand (in addition to the stadium), we have a new performing arts center with wicked acoustics and a Steinway (lest you think of us as sports obsessed cultureless philistines), renovated choir/band/orchestra rooms, interactive SmartBoards in every classroom, better software like Google Apps and the newest Microsoft Office on new computers (or at least on the new computers that aren't Macs) etc. It's rather schizophrenic and for a lowly student like myself there seems to be no rhyme or reason.
All this does not come without consequence. They've had to raise property taxes by 30 cents an acre or something (not without a vote, we aren't Michigan. Yet.) and the fiscal conservatives are making a full comeback. This new spending seems to really have enraged them. Sometimes I agree with them, but they're annoying so whatever.
MissMecurial,
I didn't realize you were so young (this coming from a 64 year old!!). I must say you are one of the smartest and most politically astute young people I've ever seen post on these blogs. I have totally enjoyed your posts and hope to see more of them!!!
I've already watched the show, but here's one you could have used: "Newt Reboot."
