Hope Solo found herself enveloped in a group hug at the final whistle. Abby Wambach ran to join the fun in a celebration that unleashed a year of bottled-up frustration.
The U.S. women's soccer team won its third straight Olympic gold medal Thursday, beating Japan 2-1 in a rematch of last year's World Cup final and avenging the most painful loss in its history.

U.S. Women's National Team taking gold.......BEST NEW THING IN THE WORLD TODAY!!!!!!
I actually took the day off of work to watch the game today. Congratulations ladies on a well deserved victory!
And Arlo White's comment afterward: "If you are walking on the pitch at Wembley, Coventry, or Old Trafford, and you come across a bit of Abby Wambach's 'human beingness'...leave it there. It was meant to be left on that field."
USA!!! Gratz girls!
It was a whole lot of fun to watch the U.S. women. They worked very hard to win the GOLD and I'm VERY HAPPY for them. YOU GO GIRLS!!!!!
Spoiler alert dammit. I thought this blog would be safe until tonight when I can watch some coverage. Oh well.
Uh, no. Even on TRMS. If you don't want to know, don't open your browser. Don't watch the show, either, I made that mistake during basketball finals last year.
Yes! USA! UAS! USA!
congrats usa soccer team!
THANKS FOR THE FRICKIN SPOILER TRMS!!!!
I got burned by the WaPo last week and learned that, well, NBC properties must be safe, they wouldn't want to undermine the network by posting results. Guess not.
Puh-leeze. You'd have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to know the US women's soccer team won gold today. If you're connected at all on the intertubes, that is.
If you want to watch something that already happened, it's up to you to avoid, although there were some slip ups on the news that didn't warn spoiler.
Umm, NBC showed the gave LIVE at 2:45 est on NBC Sports. Why does MSNBC need to give you a spoiler warning? There was no tape delay.
Oh, for crying out loud, people, watch the darn game anyway. It was masterful. Beautiful. Inspiring. Magic Foreheads and Happy Feet. Carli Lloyd for freaking president. Abby Wambach for Queen of the World. Hope Solo for Secretary of Butt Kicking. etc. etc. etc.
And when you are done watching it. Watch it again. And again. And again. Go make popcorn. Watch it again. Beer run. Watch it again. Pee break. Watch it again.
And when you are drowning in awesome sauce, go back and watch the US-CAN game just for kicks and grins.
That was really, really REALLY awesome! I was not a huge "soccer" fan, but the Canada-US game was riveting and so was Japan, but Canada vs. US really stood out from my standpoint!
Hope Solo was a very key player today! But the whole team made this golden!
Congrats ladies! Congrats to all competitors!
Congratulations, indeed! After the heart break of the World Cup, last year, I'm so thrilled they beat Japan at the Olympics this year.
BTW, in the photo above, the ladies are (l-r) Meagan, Lori, Heather, and Ali. You've got Lori & Ali switched.
Funny thing is, I was looking for the story I just saw on Rachel's show about how John Husted is f'ing up the extended voting hours in Ohio and ran across this.
I LOVE WOMEN'S SOCCER!!! I've seen them win the World Cup a few times and the gold at the Olympics a few times. I can't get enough of USWNT, so I'm thrilled to find video of a couple of my favorite players (Meagan & Heather) on my favorite news/talk show... although it seems I'm a bit late to the party. Better late than never, I guess. lol
Yeah for Women's US Olympic Football Team! BUT No-one should take pleasure in watching one human being deliberately inflict brain damage on another human, not cool, not civilized, where are we Rome? Nay to boxing should be banned, starting in schools.
