As a rule, when your opponents seem really happy about your choice in running mates, it's fair to say you've made a provocative choice.
And this morning, Democrats are practically giddy, unable to believe their good fortune.
Three different sources close to the Romney campaign indicate to NBC News that Mitt Romney will announce House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan as his vice-presidential running mate at tomorrow's campaign event in Norfolk, VA.
The announcement will be in front of the U.S.S. Wisconsin -- which just happens to be Ryan's home state.
With recent national polls showing Romney trailing President Barack Obama, Ryan is a bold pick.
"Bold" is certainly one way to look at it.
Readers may recall that I tend to think running-mate choices fall into one of three categories: Augusts, Novembers, and Januaries. If a nominee picks a January, he or she is looking for someone who can help govern once inaugurated. If he or she picks a November, the nominee is picking a running mate intended to help win the general election. And if the candidate picks an August, he or she is trying to bring a party together and satisfy intra-party demands.
Paul Ryan is an August. Romney, who never quite made the transition from the primaries to the general election, has been subjected to heavy pressure from conservatives to choose the right-wing House member, and it appears the lobbying campaign was successful. The Republican nominee still feels the need to satisfy the demands of his base, and Romney isn't in a strong enough position to disappoint them.
As a result, both the left and right have the Republican running mate they hoped for -- Romney has picked the architect of a radical, Medicare-crushing budget plan, debated by the least popular Congress since the dawn of modern polling. Indeed, it's fair to say the radical Ryan budget helped make this Congress so widely disliked, which makes his VP nomination that much more remarkable.
For months, Democrats have been trying to inject the "Romney-Ryan plan" into the political bloodstream, and now, the Republicans' presidential candidate has made Dems' job easier. The Obama campaign hoped to make Ryan Romney's effective running mate, never expecting the GOP candidate to make this literal.
The result is a dynamic that was hard to predict. Romney isn't even trying to reach out to moderate voters; he's taking the most far-right candidacy in modern American history and turning it to 11.
Postscript: Just as an aside, this will be the first Republican ticket in American history not to have a Protestant. Romney's a Mormon and Ryan is Roman Catholic.

If these two win in November, I will know that our elections are fixed.
If the average American can see that Ryan gives Obama a needed edge so can the republican leadership. So what's the intended outcome? I think the intention is to give the public a false win. A radical right candidate to assuage the low brow republican base, and Obama is re-elected to soothe a recession weary public. The electoral process is affirmed and an illusion of choice is maintained. What's to lose on the republican side, really? Obama's hope and change agenda has been a friend to the republican agenda in nearly every case but the rhetorical one. Isn't America great?
it's been a friend to the republican agenda largely due to a barely-dominantly opposing congress ... with this second term president obama has absolutely nothing to lose ... we can only hope for more executive orders, or perhaps more easily accomplished via house and senate majority come nov. (which might be imminent due to this one very very poor decision)
Great article. I agree with everything except the last paragraph. Mormons are often considered protestants, as they are very much Christians, so the incorrect assumption you guys made was not very cool...
Great job on "Meet the Press"
I stand with you on that confrontation against Rich Lowry
Keep up the good work
Wow!!!! What can I say that hasn't already been said. Perhaps Rachel Maddow should do a show that brings to light exactly what kind of person Ayn Rand was. Afterall, she is lauded by Ryan as all knowing and moral. I watched an interview she did in which she states she believes that it is not our society's moral obligation to care for the less fortunate. Remeember in an Ayn Rand type society Stephen Hawking would have never stood a chance to achieve what he has in his remarkable life.
Congratulations to all my Tea Party friends on the superbly definitive addition of Paul Ryan to this year's Republican Presidential ticket. I can only imagine the orgasmic intensity of their momentary rush when Governor Romney inadvertently introduced Mr. Ryan in their first appearance together as "the next President of the United States."
For true believers, I suggest they remember one fundamental fact come November -- a win for Romney/Ryan this time out will keep Paul Ryan off the top of the ticket in 2016 and delay his true ascent to power until 2020 at the earliest.
For Ryan in 2016, vote Obama in 2012!
or perhaps even more disastrous, not dissimilar to Palin's most definite descent from power ... pray Obama's 2nd term weeds these radicals out for years to come, hence Americans finally seeing the "light"
Peter, you forgot to mention that Obama introduced Biden as the next president of the US also, dont be a hypocrite. And Ryan/Rubio 2020 works just as good. Heres what you should remember, an Obama win, with no plan to help the economy, no one buying the blame Bush angle 8 years after he left office and the country going the same way as Greece, Spain and every other country that tried the same policies.......the liberal wing of the Democratic party will be dead for decades, if not permenantly. You should vote Romney 2012 to save your party to fight another day, you can always run Hillary in 2016!
When i first heard Romney mistakenly introduce Ryan as the next "president" of the United States, I nearly immediately figured he was under some sort of pressure from those powerful of the right ... Biden must be absolutely thrilled at his match-up come debates this fall !
I agree this is good news for Dems, but let's not get too giddy. Remember all those states with voter i.d. (suppression) laws. That's why Romney is so comfortable picking such an extreme running mate -- he's counting on those laws to keep Democratic voters away from the polls in November. As we know, Republicans have a long history of cheating to win.
With Gov. Romney's choice of Paul Ryan for his running mate, everyone should now be aware of precisely where Romney stands. Before now, people could have thought that Romney secretly shared whatever view they held because Gov. Romney has held opposing opinions on any given issue. With the Ryan choice for VP, everyone now knows precisely what Romney believes, and where he plans to take the country, should he win the election. Romney's ambiguity has disappeared with this choice. I think that in itself is enough for him to lose the election. Independent voters now have proof of just how far to the right Mitt Romney is willing to go.
Obama / Biden 2012! Its in the bag. Now go register to vote and make sure you have the proper ID and make it happen!
When Obama wins his second term, probably with over 320 electoral votes, given the polling state by state already, and only at most a half a dozen states "in play, but most leaning Obama", perhaps we can get rid of the Tea Bagger dead wood in the Senate and House, or at least most of it. Americans are not willing to sell out their elderly or even those 45-55 years old, so as to give yet another tax break to the likes of Mitt Romney, nor are Americans willing to re-litigate the birth control issues, nor are they willing to hamper hundreds of thousands of students' chances of going to college, nor are they willing to curtail scientific research, nor are they willing to forego efforts to address global climate change. Americans, by and large are smarter and more logical, kinder and more compassionate than the Republican Party's 2012 nominees for Prez and VP.
I miss Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow, and Dan Rather....I used to be a republican...for over 25 years...now I'm an independent...made the change after The Patriot Act...the erosion of freedoms in post 9/11 and the fear baiting mirrored the build up to Hitler being swept into power and how he eroded freedoms using the same "conservative," fear-bating, and culture war on the German population. <shudder> The German people blindly followed his rhetoric using "religion," racial superiority, and calls to clean up the country (get rid of non-german freeloading stereotypes and dissidents like political advocates who disagreed, immigrant Jews, etc). Blindly following him, ignoring facts, giving into an egotistical self-centered anger...<more shuddering>.
I miss separation of church and state! Exactly WHEN did the Christians get put in charge???? Exactly WHEN did the bible take the place of our constitution????
I miss how politics would, for the most part, be discussed in America...on television and in private...civil...intelligence...try to figure out common ground...
The republican party SCARES me now. It is very strange that it is 2012 and here we are AGAIN...debating women's right to govern themselves and their own bodies!!!! WTF?????????
I miss the collective power of the anti-establishment of the 60s. They stopped Vietnam. The "occupies" acted more like audience members at Woodstock...they could have made a HUGE difference if they hadn't been so disorganized and lazy...how about they getting out the vote...overcoming every obstacle thrown out to impede voting. If everyone ACTUALLY voted in AMERICA these WHACKOs would be left mumbling under their breath and keeping their toxic crap to themselves.
Fact: Clinton (democrat) left office with a balanced budget and a SURPLUS. FACT: BUSH ...STARTED TWO WARS...one that will never END. Our constitution requires that in order to declare war it has be be approved by congress and it has to be on a country...not a NOUN. Fact: Bush created the environment of rampant greed by the top 1% that pulled apart the economic foundation of ownership by the many...by ripping off homeowners who were, admittedly, ignorant regarding such matters, sending all that equity into the banks and rerouting it to wealthy pockets and their interests....BUSH might as well have put a gun to the head of our economy and pulled the trigger...he and his administration left office in the midst of everything falling and crumbling. I don't suppose it will be the last time that a fella like Barack is expected to clean up after a guy like BUSH...but there it is. And it won't be the last time that as Barack cleans up a mess made by a guy like BUSH...that BUSHY's buds point fingers at Barack and complain about the job he's doing. Sheeeeeshhh...give me a @%^^ing break.
You act on things you CARE about. You care about things that you think about. You think about things that affect you.
Does anyone really think Mitt Romney is any different? Do our lives, our struggles, our concerns about our future...matter to him? Do ya think???
If there is ANY intellegence left in the US...ANY of the spark that made this nation possible in the first place...this should be a no-brainer. IF the republicans are successful at BUYING THIS ELECTION....(Rehnquist is likely turning over in his grave along with the founding daddies)...then that spark will have fizzled too low to protect our freedoms, our dignity, and our legacy as Americans.
In 1968 it was UNAMERICAN AND ILLEGAL to "buy an election," disregard the separation of church and state, wire-tap anyone without warrants, express a WHACKO extreme as a news anchor, (and I could go on).
Today, these religious, ideological usurpers of our nation's legacy don't look very different than the white racists of the sixties who used the bible to justify every, single WHACKO idea they would attempt to advance through peaceful or non-peaceful tactics. (Jim Crow laws, lynchings).
I've done my homework on the equality of marriage topic...and its none of the CHRISTIANS BUSINESS! Whom an American wants to marry is a civil issue...and has NOTHING to do with any religion. There is freedom of religion...as in to practice it...not to shove it down other people's throats.
I've been watching Rachel's program for a while and enjoy it immensely. At times, it does lean left to the point of almost losing balance...but stays more center than most and makes intelligent critical thinking the STAR of her program. I'd like to point out something I've observed for the rest of you leaning forward types...
When you read the comments at the WHACKO sites, its appears only WHACKOS post...evidently if anyone with a more moderate or left view posts...it gets deleted. I know every time I or my co-workers posted, we were deleted. After a while, it became too funny (Misology).
On liberal sites, the WHACKOS who troll and post but their WHACKO comments don't seem to get deleted.
Maybe the moderates and the lefties are the one's following the pathway of freedom of speech? Personally, I think it is beneath the dignity of any intellect to try to engage WHACKOS or try to change them. These are the very type of individuals who obstructed the abolition of slavery in our history and claimed it was justified in the bible, objected to interracial marriage, claimed it was unnatural...same tune, different date.
The difference between a WHACKO and a bone fide republican is that a WHACKO doesn't listen or discuss...its one volume (LOUD)...its one way...like vomit. A bone fide politically interested person (rep or dem) is going to have a conversation...and afterwards both of you may have a wider perspective on the topic.
Whats the difference between a WHACKO (moral majority / extremist) and a Extremist liberal? Nothing. They are both NUTS...don't listen...don't discuss.
The moderates and independents appear to mostly believe in social justice and financial conservatism. Obama has done an amazing job given the mess he inherited from little lord FAUNT LE ROY. And at the end of the day, a very small percentage of people in America barely understand government budgets, income, spending...so much of it is a shell game perfected by generations of self serving members of congress. In fact...only a small fraction of American people understand THEIR OWN personal finances...budgets, debt avoidance, saving, etc.
I kinda figured by now we'd be such a BETTER nation of people than we were in 1968...
Rachel, someone needs to challenge/confront Ryan on this, and it strikes me it's the sort of argument you're good at, so here goes: Ryan is Catholic; he also admires Ayn Rand. This is a huge contradiction. Rand's thinking and Catholic teaching are antithetical and irreconcilable. So we have a dilemma here. Ryan is either a) Not a true Randian (this is difficult to argue, since Rand is required reading for his aides), b) only nominally Catholic (he doesn't believe his church's teaching re: compassion, to everyone generally but particularly the poor), or c) not aware of the disconnect/hasn't thought about it/doesn't want to deal with the issue (in which case, he can't possibly by the "intellectual leader" the Republicans think him--or maybe it just shows how desperately stupid Republicans really are). Do you see how deliciously convoluted this is? SOMEONE must force Ryan to deal with this. Publically.
They are neither Mormon nor Roman Catholic. They are Douche Bags.
No matter who Romney picked the Dems wouldve came out "acting" like they we happy about the pick. In reality, Rubio woould have been too in experienced and young, Pawlenty or Portman wouldve been too boring, Ryan to extreme. They would have claim to be estatic to run against any of them. With Ryan voters have a choice.....a plan (whether you like it or not) and no plan. The presidents only hope, despite what the polls that oversample Dems and sample registered rather than likely voters, was a negative campaign of historical intensity. You cant vote for the presidents record, the statute of limitations on blaming Bush ran out two years ago, and he has presented not one new idea nor has he pivoted or moved to the center. His hope rests on m aking the case that Ryan is extreme, but can he? Can he claim Ryan would cut Medicare when the presidents health care law cuts Medicare by $500-$700 Billion? Well he can and surely will, but will it work? Can he claim that Ryan will end Medicare as we know it, when the ACA so obviously intends to push seniors off Medicare into the Government health care plan? It will be interesting, and whatever the outcome its better than seeing the guttersnipe comments about tax returns and Romney killing peoples wives. Theres certainly nowhere to go from there but up.
Meh,....
You are spouting the same old, same old, that has been disproven over and over.
As far as Romney picking Ryan? Wasn't really that much of a surprise to US - it appears it was to YOU, though. We already knew the extreme right wasn't fond of Romney and they were NEVER going to let him pick his own VP. So he fell in line took their choice - another pretty face and Palin wannabe. But does the good old Go Back -Throwback party ever figure out that extremists DON'T get the votes? Nahhhhhhhh!
You obviously HAVEN'T been reading the posts or you would know that Obama's cuts do not hurt Medicare payments, and no matter HOW many times you keep repeating that mantra, it just isn't true!
You see, I'm one of those people who will go on Medicare in a year so I have been researching not only what happens through ACA but also what could happen with the Ryan-Wyden Plan and I know FOR A FACT that if the Republicans repeal ACA and institute the Ryan-Wyden Plan, my out-of-pocket expenses WILL GO UP, whereas they will GO DOWN under ACA!!!
You must think we "older folks" are real stupid or you wouldn't be trying to pass those "prevarications" off on us!!!
To GaryG47: One the basic differences between the Republicans and the Democrats is that the Republicans' plan is to privatize Medicare, while the Democrats want to keep it as a governmental program. When you privatize anything, you are giving it over to a for-profit company or companies. When the for-profit companies get their hands on anything, there goes any cost controls we once had, and there goes the prices for our health care. It's just not a good idea.
As to your claim of a statute of limitations on blaming the previous administration, I will NEVER forgive President Bush's administration for what they did to our country. And now Gov. Romney wants to go back to the same practices that got us into this financial mess in the first place: get rid of any restrictions on corporations, put more burden on the poor and the middle class, and cut taxes for the rich. All that while saber rattling against Russia and China. A Mitt Romney presidency scares me to death... and if Gov. Romney is elected, that statement may prove to be literal.
No, Gary. Had he selected Portman or Pawlenty, we'd have been bored and nodded our heads that he'd picked someone who wouldn't eclipse him, but was moderate and within the normal range of VP picks. Had he chosen Rubio or Ayotte, we'd have figured he was trying to narrow the gap with Hispanic or female voters.
If he really had any choice, given the demands of his donors, his pick of Ryan reeks of desperation. We're thrilled, really we are. For us. Romney's climb to the presidency just got a lot steeper.
It isn't how WE--already committed Obama voters--feel about Ryan. It's that moderates and independents will view him as having views that are outside the mainstream. True "undecideds" (and it's a small percentage at this point) will feel increasingly comfortable voting for Obama now. As the campaign progresses, and they're overwhelmed with ads on both sides, the more confused they will become. That works in favor of the incumbent, as they'll feel less confident about making a change. They'll opt for the status quo.
From a post above by an obviously totally ignorant Tea Bagger: "Can he claim that Ryan will end Medicare as we know it, when the ACA so obviously intends to push seniors off Medicare into the Government health care plan?"
Do I need say more? These people are so devoid of facts and so paranoid about a bi-racial man in the White House they defy the concept of logic! (I won't count up the number of misspelled words in that post, you can do your own count.)

This guy is creepy in a Steven King 'Dead Zone' kind of way. From his Eddie Munster looks, to the fact that one of his first jobs was driving the wiener-mobile. I'm not fooled by his cool Clancyesque last name, or the fact that in a dim room he could almost -- god forbid -- be mistaken for a Kennedy. I am, however, simply baffled that the GOP's dynamic duo now consists of a milk toast corporacrat with sociopathioc tendencies, and a beltway climber with the political and moral grace of a claw hammer.
Unable, apparently, to offer any criticism that actually deals with the candidates' positions, you are reduced to a meandering, sophomoric ad hominem attack--quintessential left-wing twaddle.
BTW, there's no such word as sociopathioc; try sociopathic.
Interesting facts: Romney's father was born in Mexico. His Grandfather fled the USA to Mexico to join a Polygamy Commune after a crackdown in the USA on having multiple wives, and the Mormon Church refused to allow Blacks to become Priests until 1978, because they considered them to be "inferior people". It's all true! Google it!
In 1988, Paul Ryan's senior year, his classmates chose him as "Biggest 'Brown-Noser'," overlooking the VP-to-be in other categories like "best looking," "biggest flirt," and "most likely to succeed." Scroll down to the third photo.

In my experience the moderators during the Prez/VP debates are curiously soft on the candidates - all the candidates. These "debates" are not debates in the formal sense so why don't they make their questions more direct. I want someone to ask Romney/Ryan, and now especially Ryan, if they think believe abortion is "okay" in cases of incest and rape. I want those morons to look us directly in the eye when giving their answers. I also want them to answer directly about their thoughts on voter surpression.
I have not a clue why the press is so soft on asking hard questions most of the time - that goes for both parties. Make these candidates wet their pants once in a while!
all I want to say is PLEASE Mr. Romney do not give up...our country cannot handle another four years...the hardworking class..that just watches from their sofa asks...please get our jobs back and show your expertise!!!!!! So I can pay my student loans...
In regard to the opportunistic screed Mitt issued on the Embassy bombing: I abhor his rhetoric but see that he also taken to opportunity to put a nail in the coffin of his campaign. Kind of a silver cloud......
