Speaking as a national candidate for the first time, Paul Ryan, reading from his teleprompter, told supporters he's "thrilled to be a part of America's comeback team." It was right around that time the Obama campaign unveiled its own new name for the Republican ticket: "The Go Back Team."
Indeed, Team Obama unveiled this video right around the time the GOP event in Virginia was wrapping up. (It appears to be a video intended for the web, not broadcast.)
With this in mind, it's worth keeping in mind that a GOP strategist told NBC News this morning that Romney's agenda is "not an embrace, line by line, of the Ryan plan." CNN reported something similar, noting Romney talking points saying the campaign has not embraced the Ryan agenda as its own.
It's way too late to play little shell games like these. Romney has endorsed the Ryan plan several times, and this morning, literally made Ryan his running mate.
If Team Romney wanted to put some distance between themselves and Ryan's radical congressional budget plan, they should have thought about that before this morning.

Watching some of the coverage this morning on Fox and CNN, it was hard to tell if it's the Romney-Ryan ticket or the Ryan-Romney ticket.
Analysts on Fox were so thrilled, they all but admitted that Ryan will be the dominant player here. They opined that his budget will be the central focus of their campaign.
Apparently, the price that Romney had to pay to placate the base was that he will be taking his cues from Ryan.

The projected end of federal deficit spending does not occur until 2040. Deficits continue for the next 10 years increasing the national debt to 21.63 trillion and continue for another 18 years!!! Both of which are contrary to tea party tenets and devoid of my perception for fiscal responsibility.

Shooter comparing Ryans plan to everyday families is truly hilarious. I can't think of an everyday family who attempts to balance their budget 30 years down the road and calls that responsible.

The Ryan you see today is not the man who for years has appeared as a guest on CNBC. That guy was a “moderate”, nuts and bolts on facts and figures, a charismatic wonk if you will. However not at all, ideologically speaking, on the side of the budget that now bears his name Here’s what I think happened.
The GOP in 2006-08 was an old party, especially in the national leadership, people in their 60s and older. It was full of politicians who had cut their teeth in the Reagan years. The back to back defeats damaged the brand so to speak and paved the way for the sea change that occurred in 2010. Suddenly, much more suddenly than men like Boehner were expecting I’m sure, the GOP was younger, angrier, more ideological and conservative.
As in any civil war, everybody has to choose sides. Ryan being a politician first and a wonk second, chose to run with the upcoming big dogs of his own generation as it were, rather than stay a moderate. He capped this off by putting his name on a budget that was a terrible mistake, because it was another one of those “symbolic” pieces of legislation that had no possibility of passage and which are by their very nature works of faith , not reason.
He’s stuck with the “Ryan budget” now in which the numbers don’t work, but which he’ll have to defend. It’s probably career suicide for him
Incidentally and hopefully the same sea change is about to occur for the Dems in 2014-16. They are an exceptionally old party at the leadership level, notwithstanding the president. Men and women who came to the fore in the Clinton years and who are now in their 60s and 70s. In the next two elections, all the Reids, Bidens, Clintons, Hoyers, Dingells Levins and Rangells will retire or be swept out by a younger generation of Dems, hungrier, more combative, more liberal in a watershed move.
May we all live in interesting times.

I don't know if you are aware of this, but there is a trend in the US that right wing forces hire trolls in an attempt to influence public opinion. Those posts are not for the "regulars" who post, but for the "lurkers" who don't post. The theory behind that is to sway those voters to either vote for a right wing candidate or not vote at all.
Those trolls are either subtle or not so subtle. bb is trying to come across as one of those subtle trolls, but he is just as bad as those in-your-face trolls, and today his posts show him for what kind of a troll that he is.
Regardless of what kind of trolls are on this site their goal is a disgusting one, and this election matters more than ever here in the US. We can't afford to go back. And folks like bb want America to go backwards, not forwards.

There are millions of Americans(unfortunately) who rely on the media to inform and educate. Is that right? No. And as such the media is failing its citizens on a daily basis, and it is only getting worse. You can look at this election as proof of that. Which is why Benen's blog is so important.
And the media does indeed insult people on a daily basis: they insult poor people, people of color, women, body types, sizes, etc. on a daily basis. This kills two birds with one stone: the media tells you what to think, and what you should buy, and it helps define the quality of living(things we think we should have).
I cannot "silence contrary positions:" but I can call out what I see as bull@!$%#. That is also part of the public discourse. This is a left leaning site. And if you come on here spouting nonsense expect push back.
And if your motives here are to troll, you are going to get called out for it. There is a difference between a "difference in opinion" and lying. You can find bb's post astute and agree with it but that doesn't make you or him right.
America is in a serious time right now. And anyone who tries to undermine the progress that this country is making needs to be called out on it.

About the bailout, GM s building plants in China with your money that when they are finsihed will build the Cadillacs there that are currently built here and shipped there. Also this spring GM took 250 million of your money and gave it to Peugeot in return for technology instead of hiring American engineers to do research here. Finally Chryser is no longer an American company but an Italian one. We gave Fiat 40% of Chrysler esstentially for free but ostensibly in exchange for Fiat's small car tech that was at that time built in Poland. That tech, which is the Fiat 500, in turn was not used to build new plants in the US but built instead a new plant in Mexico where the Fiat 500 is now made.
GM is not in fact a US company, except in name plate. Two thirds of their employees are outside the US, not here, and between 60-62% of their sales. The percentage of their US built vehicles is falling not rising. As I pointed out the other day, they will pay no US taxes for the forseeable future because of Treasury's decision to allow them to carry over their previous losses, in spite of the bankruptcy.

Donna, I do understand. There have been posts just recently (directed at me) that I chose to ignore after coming to the realization that arguing with folks whose only goal is to stir the pot elevates them and their ignorance. It's hard for me to let it go as it's my nature to try to get in the last word but, when a posters only goal IS to make me angry and when I "go there", they win. On the up-side, there's nothing that angers a bully more than being ignored :-)
It's my belief that any person who decides to lurk in a blog such as this is probably more likely to be nodding along in agreement with your posts than someone like banned or shooter. Anyone swayed by the superficial talking points issued by Fox News (and parroted by trolls here) is probably not interested in any discussion of depth anyway.
There are some conservatives who post here that, in my opinion (though this is not shared generally) who are more-or-less genuinely interested in debate. Those posters I will engage in debate. The rest, though I do love calling them out on their crap, are just snacks to get through a long day. But, they're empty calories and I usually end up feeling gross for having indulged at all.

I like Donna's persistence and I'll say this about Banned… the moniker invites the criticism of self pity and victimhood. Maybe if you are banned again, the moniker could be something less victim-y.
It's usually a good idea to pause and ask oneself "am I doing that?" instead of calling "victim" or defending without questioning.
So Banneagain: You see looking at GM purchasing plants in Europe because their economy is failing due to implementing the Ryan/Republican style plan is actually a great thing for us since GM will take over that market. Thank god Obama didn't allow GM to fail like Mitt wanted it to or allow us to implement the Ryan plan or we would be in the same boat as Europe.
On the other hand, please note your comment regarding China and how they steal our technology. China has also been a mainstay of Mitts overseas shipping policy as it has been for a majority of corporations. These "fantastic businessmen" who have failed us so miserably in the banking, mortgage, LIBOR, BP and other crisis's ship to China for many of reasons but one of the main reason's is that China always offers to build their facilities for free. This is specifically so they can set up an environment inducive for them to steal our patents and ideas. Since our multi-nationals no longer view themselves as American companies but rather as separate entities unto themselves as per the Ayn Rand ideals, they don't care where their patents reside anymore or who has them.
This is a prime reason why we need to break up the huge "too big to fail" multi-nationals. But that will never happen under Republican control. We can't even get rules to correct the problems that caused the Bush crash of '08 or the LIBOR scandal that cost the world hundreds of trillions of dollars under Republican control. They still are trying to protect the banks and screw us at all costs.
The banks are a literal monopoly and do not need any protection. They are the protection, and it's a racket. Nothing protects better than money. Rights are what you can afford them to be, and we have been and are privatizing those rights.

They had this on breaking news early this morning on msnbc. At one point, they showed a clip of a Cheney interview. When asked what he thought of Paul Ryan. I thought Cheney was going to drool when he said, "I worship the ground the guy walks on, he's a brilliant young man". What? I cringe when I hear Mitt saying Cheney is full of wisdom about foreign policy and whatever else he said. I would rather keep Cheney in Wyoming - do not want that trigger happy anywhere near the decision making process. They all want another war, that's what Cheney did - let 7 billion dollars in non compete contracts to Haliburton and friends. I'm surprised Cheney's new heart, which we paid for, hasn't rejected him.
Ryan is far more dangerous than Cheney. Cheney was merely after the power, he wasn't a true believer who would willingly go over the cliff or jump in a kamikaze.

I became ill this morning when I learned Ryan was his VP choice as I fear his budget. This is a budget based on the ideology of an Atheist Ayn Rand so there is no Christian compassion or teachings in this budget. I feel that if they win in November I will no longer be able to afford the health care that enables me to fight my cancer. I am scared. Ryan's budget wants to privatize social security; will that reduce my monthly income? Ryan's budget wants to give out vouchers for Medicare and I believe he said that would be for basic health care and if you needed more coverage than you would have to pay for that yourself. Well when I lost my job and Cobra ran out - most
insurance companies would not cover me because of my illness, but when I
finally found a company to give me the coverage I needed it was $1,208 a month
for 80% coverage. I only received $1,308 a month from my social security.
On top of that they want to cut programs that help feed the poor, assist them with housing and welfare. When they cut these programs what will happen to people who do not earn enough money to support their families? Will we have children going hungry and more families living in shelters and on the streets? Republicans do not support
the minimum wage law, neither to the Koch Brothers, what will happen if they repeal that, how many more people will be working longer hours and earning even less money.
We are a Country that has told the world we are leaders of Democracy our American Citizens have fought on foreign soil defending Democracy and human injustices. We must be seen now as the biggest hypocrites, we tell them how to govern yet we suppress the Vote here to ensure that there is a Republic Regime controlling our
Country. We give financial aide to those countries that are poor, but we will cut the programs that assist our poor. Oh but wait we will be increasing our Military Budget so we can go to war against Countries who want to deny Democracy to their own or threaten someone else’s Democracy.
How do Countries view us when we put our government up for bid and fix elections by suppressing the votes of a political party with different views.
Lorr- On the other hand, when I heard late last night that Ryan was to be the Republican Vice-President pick, I rejoiced. In a party that was already destroying itself internally, they picked the one man who has vowed to radically change Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. The most dominant and partisan supporters of the Republicans have been older Americans, who both contribute and vote. They have also made it very clear (even the Tea Baggers), to "keep your hands off my medicare". I can only imagine how many of them are going to be rethinking their support when the Democrats hammer Ryans policies and goals.
One little thing. Ayn Rand may have been an atheist, but that didn't have anything to do with her libertarian ideas about government. I think that you would find that most atheists tend to be rational, and often more liberal, as we don't subscribe to religious or authoritarian (read Republican) dogma.

Rwsgate: I am sorry, I should have been clearer in my post, I did not mean to offend anyone who is Athiest, I respect how they feel. What I wanted to convey was that Ryan claimed his budget was based on the teachings of his Catholic Faith, which it is not.
Yes he claims that his budget was based on the teachings of his Catholic faith but a Catholic Bishop called his budget immoral. The Nuns, in support of their Bishop, started a bus tour thru some states including Wisconsin to talk with Ryan. As of this week sometime, they were trying to get Romney to meet with them. This may not have much of an impact on Romney, although it would be hard to get around having the Nuns against you, it is the Catholic Ryan that may buckle under Nun scrutiny. These are well educated Liberal Nuns, and I don't expect them to give up, but to buckle down. We'll see which way Ryan goes. Catholic or the Non Christian Republicans. What Republicans are planning to do to the elderly and poor and even some used to be middle class in this country is not in line with what Jesus says. Jesus says we will be judged as a nation by the way we treat the least among us. I think men can be evil - but for Ryan, this will be a real test. The oldies in this country, and I'm one of them, better listen up because most of us do not want to give up that SS we contributed to all our lives or the Medicare either. I still pay a $100 premium every month for my Medicare. I may still be able to go out and shop for insurance, but that is very taxing for Seniors. My mom passed away in a nursing home a couple years ago and she was an insurance agent but she was still totally physically incapacitated and absolutely incapable of shopping for insurance with a voucher. If they repeal Obama care, no old person with any condition at all will get insurance coverage.

The"DotCom bubble burst" recession began about the G.W. Bush took office. A lot of jobs were lost.
The Great Recession began in December 2007 with the massive job losses.
I don't think the Great Recession was the entirely the fault of G.W. Bush. I would argue that he could have done more to stop it.

In a way, I wish I hadn't said what I said, but I have to tell you, I meant it. You're right about the dotcom bubble, but the outsourcing/offshoring/merger/acquisitions went into overdrive. I still want to have a more domestically friendly economic carrots and sticks. which would mean tax codes that would never come into play with Republicans. They seem very happy to send jobs away and penalize our own people.

Ryan has a better shot at being the next Republican presidential nominee than being the next vice president. And that's why he accepted this nomination.
Looking at the long game, after Mitt loses this year he won't run again. His VP pick will have a better shot than most, or at least the chance to demonstrate some seriousness, some party loyalty, etc doesn't hurt. But Ryan is too extreme and too unlikable to win even a statewide election in Wisconsin.
So, what Mitt has done here, is to fail to elevate as his VP someone (eg, a non-TP governor) who could actually use the national exposure to his advantage in 4 years.
2012 is all but over. 2016 remains very interesting.

I have been watching Rommey reluctantly for a few weeks and there is somthing very silimar to hin and my mother who had dementia. I serious believe he is suffering from the onset of dementia. His short term memory is grossly evident. He couldn't remember what position Ryan was being offered, president or vice presidentt. He couldn't remember his talking points from 1-5. I know what this means and others may not be observing it but it is very serious and we need to take a close look at his goofs. Of course I will be voting for OBAMA. These Goofs are becoming more common.
Not to mention he claimed Ryan has reached across the aisle to cooperate? Ha Ha Ha! I'd like an example of that! He also reminded everyone that Ryan was part of GWB's Republican Congress! Boy they did a great job with the economy didn't they!

Romney's choice of Ryan offers Democrats a number of options. I hope Democrats use all of the options.
If the Romney campaign insists his choice is "not an embrace, line by line, of the Ryan plan." then maybe Democrats can corner Romney into condemning his own running mate.
At the very least Democrats should highlight Ryan's plan for ending Medicare, etc. and run the many clips of Romney unequivocally endorsing the Ryan plan.
Such ads expose a sharp contrast and they are absolutely true.

Considering that Ryan is the darling of the teabaggers, Romney is going to be hard put to diverge from the Ryan plan. The Republican platform at the convention is going to be extreme, and he'll be forced to campaign on it or lose support from his base.
