Romney and Ryan talk to "60 Minutes", in which we learn Ryan will follow Romney's lead on releasing his tax returns and in which we learn that Romney thinks he won't have to answer for the Ryan budget.
The behind-closed-doors machinations of putting Ryan on the ticket.

You know how the left rails against tax cuts? Agree to keep the rates we've had for the last decade and we can do a deal.
Nope.
How appropriate. A guy named "Shooter" proposing to negotiate tax deals on behalf of the Republican Party.
Re: #1
Go to CBO.gov take a look at the 2012 Long-Term Budget Outlook
http://www.cbo.gov/publication/43288
Look at the Extended Baseline Scenario and the Extended Alternative Fiscal Scenario.
Extended Baseline Scenario is based on all current law – with everything becoming effective or stopping as scheduled.
Extended Alternative Fiscal Scenario is same as the Extended Baseline with several big exceptions – one is that all “Bush” tax cuts – of 2001 and 2003 do NOT expire at end of 2012.
Debt to GDP ratio in 2037:
Extended Baseline Scenario = 53
Extended Alternative Fiscal Scenario = 199
I call it the Extended Alternative Fiscal DISASTER. The projection for this one is totally ridiculous and there is no way in *heck* we would ever let this happen – it would be STUPID.
Is just letting the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts expire the best solution? I don't know.
Do we need to complete reform the tax code? Yes!
OK guys, how about Clinton rates for everyone?
Vulture Capitalism on parade !
Cut the safety net programs for middle income folks and disadvantaged folks . . .
BUT
Give breaks to the Billionaire fascists like Cheney and the Kochroach Brothers who have ripped off American Tax Dollars to the tune of trillions in banking, mortgage, Wall Street, and Military Inudstries, FRAUD AND GRAFT !
The very wealthy are entitled to steal money from the rest of us year after year.
But the disadvantaged and the workers are only entitled to die.
Jesus would be so proud that they are using him as a mascot for their financial con job.
Drama isn't helping. The wealthy don't steal money from you.
B.S.
Fraud and Graft for decades to the tune of trillions of middle class tax dollars !
I have been paying taxes since I was 15 years old !
So they ARE stealing from me.
Pathetic that you select against your own interests by supporting Radical, Right-Wing, Republican, Racist, Homophobic, Women-Hating CRIMINALS like Robmehood and The Savant of Nottinghood.
Romney and Ryan = Vulture Capitalism on parade !
Drama still isn't helping. What did some rich guy actually take from you?
Vulture Capitalists have been stealing from the rest of us for decades through tax and financial fraud and graft.
Try reading what I am posting.
And you have me confused with someone who gives a damn if you think that what I am posting is drama !
It is truth and you cannot handle the truth.
Re #1.8, my money. They took my money from the taxes I paid in rebates and incentives for themselves. Theft by non-participation. If they paid their fair share, I wouldn't have to pay so much.
They have stolen money from all of us who actually pay taxes and invest money.
Baking fraud and graft.
Tax fraud and graft.
Military Industries fraud and graft.
Wall Street fraud and graft.
Foreign Dictator Support fraud and graft.
Mortgage fraud and graft.
Ironic now these issues NEVER bother Reich-Wing Radicals.
But helping disadvantaged people survive and giving back middle class taxes to workers' in the form of social services is a wrong to them.
Dear Shooter -- Let's say you find that a $20 bill's missing from your wallet. Your brother has an extra $20 in his. Doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out where your money went. Assuming a fixed amount of money in society, realizing that money doesn't just vanish, if 80% of society has less money in their wallets these days, and the top 1% of society has the same amount more in theirs, we can conclude that, yes, some rich guys took our money. And we didn't get anything for it.
UD Build it123 banned, re-reg of multiple accounter mom+dads basement.
Elena, nobody took $20 from your wallet. Figuratively or otherwise.
You can't assume a fixed amount of money in society. DC alone created an extra $1300 billion dollars last year and the year before that and the year before that. Any time you give a bank a dollar, it has the power to lend ten creating that money out of thin air.
Or, to put into vernacular there is no pie people fight over for a slice. In fact the "pie" is actually a total of all the incomes earned in the country. It's a measure of how much each group contributes, not takes.
I'll be happy to answer any questions about that if you have any.
Liberal voters only "rail" against tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of our country; better known as the "Bush tax cuts." Or didn't you know? Statistics show that the super rich don't pay their fair share, and noted financial people like Warren Buffett agree.
Shooter - what do you say to all of the crap that has happened on Wall Street to the detriment of the middle class? Short sales, hedge funds? New structured instruments that created the housing bubble so brokers and investors got wealthier while regular folks got foreclosed on? What about traders driving oil prices up so we can pay more at the pump while oil companies make record profits? Prices on consumer goods go up much faster than anyone's income. There's demonstrable proof that the income gap is widening more than ever. But you don't think the wealthy are gaining that from anyone else? You must be even more stupid than I previously thought.
How in the world are the "job creators" going to hire people if an individual's real income keeps going down and they can't afford goods they used to be able to buy? Demand is what causes companies to hire workers. Without demand, no "job creator" will be hiring anybody. Why is such a simple economic reality so difficult for you and the GOP to see?
Do you really not understand that?
RipRock, You shouldn't base your opinion on spin. Most people in top percent pay the max, not all of them are Hedge fund guys. In fact, financial guys are only about 17% of the top percent. According to the NYT.
KJ, My pick for the one guy responsible is Robert Rubin. He instigated the repeal of Glass Steagal, and single handedly kept the derivatives market invisible.
re: demand, where do you think the money for demand comes from? Jobs. Where do jobs come from? Business. Consider the blackouts in India. You'd grant there is plenty of demand, yes? If demand were all that necessary, India would be the power capital of the world. What's missing?
OMG - okay Shooter, go ahead and start making a product. You can choose the product - whatever you think your workers will want to buy when they get their paychecks from you. Hire a bunch of people, train them, have them start making your product. Since you're sure they'll buy your product, go ahead and make millions of them. Yeah, it'll take a lot of material and labor to make them. Oh wait...how are you going to pay those workers and buy those materials if nobody's ready to buy the product yet and you have no revenues? Plus now you have all this inventory you have to store until it sells. And remember, those workers, with their first few paychecks, are probably going to be using them to catch up on their rent, car payments, utilities, etc. so they won't be able to buy your product for a few more months yet. Good luck keeping your business afloat in the meantime. Demand without the means to pay for something isn't demand.
As for India, it is the perfect illustration of what happens when a country doesn't invest in its infrastructure. The electric grid is in such bad shape there, they have to restrict demand. It finally got to a point where people (mainly manufacturing companies) said "screw it, we're going to use what we need." They overloaded the system and it crashed. So you see, the difference in your India example is that it has nothing to do with people's ability to pay for the product.
You forgot the capital part of capitalism. I have to have the money to cover all those expenses in hand before doing all that. Before hiring anyone. Starting a business doesn't rely on demand.
But the ability to pay for demand requires businesses to start. Business first, then jobs, then demand.
Why does no one comment on the guaranteed minimum tax add on already paid by many people. Since many are already paying an equalizing tax give consideration to tax rate.
Sorry Bob, I have no idea what you just said, seriously.
please clarify Bob..i think i agree..
It was pretty obvious, even before his choices as VP, that Ryan was going to be the one whose budget would be advanced.
Never forget what Grover Norquist (who will be de facto President if Romney wins) said: that we don't need a fearless leader, we know what to do, we need a warm body to sign the bills we send him.
This won't work and it will take decades to undo.
Think Progress article on Paul Ryan:

I think this compilation of stories about those "behind-closed-doors machinations" is a hoot.
It ain't about journalism; it's about stenography.
USS Wisconsin
Built in a government owned and operated shipyard (Philadelphia Navy Yard - a yard that competed with privately owned shipyards for contracts).
Built by union workers using union made American steel - workers who, just prior to WWII, won significant improvements in wages and working conditions through - collective bargaining.
Nice little article about pre-union days at Bethlehem Steel and the strike of 1941.

Apparently the Dailykos beat me to the draw on this one by 3 or 4 hours - my original post on this was Saturday on "UP". I got distracted following the growth of unions in the '30's.
A tip of the hat to "Wheever".

Mitt says of Ryan: "We share the same values." Then, when asked how many years of tax returns he turned over for the vetting process, Ryan dodges the question. SHARED VALUE: Don't answer potentially embarrassing questions, but talk a lot so people won't realize you're dodging questions.
Mitt says he has his own budget plan, and he'll run on that (implying he won't run on Ryan's). But he's already praised Ryan's plan on several occasions, and chose to run with it's creator. Another dodge, and perhaps, another self repudiation.
All we need to do is sit and wait.
Anyone who doesn't see that Ryan and Norquist are already running the show has his head in the sand.
And these people need to be stopped before they pack the Court with Bork-type originalists who will try to take us back to the 18th century. They talk about freedom, but without a right to privacy there will be no freedom... except possibly the freedom to cram their religious rules down your throat and shoot you legally for no reason.
my interest in ryan's tax returns is on par with my interest in the price of hog belly futures as listed in this morning's Prairie Farm Report. unless ryan has millions in undeclared income parked off shore, it is still romney's taxes i want to see.
I totally agree Shea; the issue with both of these guys is all the secrecy on everything related to taxes and their so call prosperity for America plan..... There are key components of Mitt's taxes profile missing, producing an economic plan with missing parts then bragging that it can't really be scored because he left out the necessary details to prevent accountability; mismatch profiles of his work record & time at bain; and finally, his choosing a Potential VP who plan to carry the same hidden agenda's in his so call economic plan for America... Really America are we so blind & defeated that we would sign on to this madness from the GOP when this is the same old same old story from them for the last 35-40 years!!! I do not believe this is going to wash at this time with the American people; then, their administration always leave the country in a mess for Demos to clean-up time after time.......
Will at least one person ask either Romney or Ryan whether they believe the precedence they are setting with their tax returns should apply to all following candidacies hereafter, Democrat or Republican?
Can someone, anyone ask that one rather important question?
$3,000,000 taxed at 1/2 of 1% equals $15,000. Median income in my hometown in Wisconsin is less than 35,000. If taxed at 41% equals $14,350. Romney/Ryan would say that the guy paying 41% isn't paying his fair share, as the guy paying 1/2 of 1% is paying more, and deserves a tax break.
Hey, anybody notice that this is the first time in history that there are no White Anglo-Saxon Protestants on either major party ticket? Obama might qualify as coming closest, being the only protestant of the group, and having Anglo-Saxon ancestry on his mother's side.
Not that this matters much to me; it's not like my particular religion's gonna have a nominee any time soon. Unless Bruce Campbell or Penn Jillette run ... They're both ordained SubGeniuses.
The lies drip from their lips like prayers to their god....MONEY! And BS just passes by the lies....and continues with their pre-approved questions...
And the corporate media plays along. Corporate media is unquestionably complicit in each and every lie the GOP tells.
When I was a kid, about 50 years ago, I had about a hundred in my savings account. I got about 5% interest. It is been going down ever since. BUT, SOMEBODY seems to be going up ever since. Heck, it is under one percent for a $500 2-year cd now. But I did understand at a very early age that adulthood was a myth.
I think that I'd like somebody to ask Ryan why he's still running for Congress. Doesn't he believe in his own ticket? Wouldn't that leave his constituents in a lurch? What does he say to his constituents? You should ask him . . .
http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/paul-ryan-can-run-for-both-congress-and-vice-president-in-wisconsin/
Still blaming Obama for the economy. I don't see that. I see that Bush caused the recession that almost became a recession and Obama is pulling us out of it. Give him 4 more years to finish the job and really get us going again.
So if we had ALL been included in participating in the Same Loopholes, as the very Rich, & we all had been offered the opportunity to have a 100,000,000 IRA...we wouldn't need Medicare would we!!! ....The Special Interest, Lobbyists & Lawyers who have been allowed to re-write the laws, have destroyed the DNA of the American Dream....
I've paid taxes for 46years....Now my savings will have to be Exhausted by Means Testing...Because I haven't Hid my $$$$ offshore. When I no longer have savings, probably in my 70's or 80's I'm going to have to decide which Voucher Plan is not Socially Engineered to shorten my life!!...It's called the "American Nightmare"...
I want these candidates to answer:
What is the price of milk?
What is the max amount of food stamp subsidy given to a family of 4?
What is the min wage?
If you believe the poor are lazy and doing drugs, where are the facts/statistics on this?
The real test would be to give them the budget for a poor family who are working min wage and let them run the numbers....... American people who clean your hotel room and get little to know tips, the Walmart moms, the gas station attendant, janitor, et al.
In what ways are they going to overhaul congressional entitlements (health care, retirement, salary)? Will they forgo salary increases? Will they agree to have their pay docked for blocking progress by saying "NO" and not attempting to negotiate with the other party?
In my life time I have only seen one candidate meet with the poor in person and on video tape, Kennedy!
I think if you are going to change the system for a population of any kind, you should meet them, get to know how they life situation, struggles and how American they are even the poor. No one is talking about the numerous Veterans who are homeless, out of work and how these proposed cuts to medicare, medicaid, food subsidy will effect our hero's.
Republicans used MSNBC and NBC and Hayes and Maddow and Perry and Gregory all weekend to push the big GOP lie of 700 billion in cuts to Medicare due to the Affordable Care Plan. Medicare Advantage, not Medicare was desubsidized to a large extent resulting in hundreds of billions of dollars not going to pay for Med. Advantage, a private insurance plan. Hello! MSNBC and NBC and their hosts got used and abused by GOP flacks this weekend because they either let the flackery prevail or because they are just uninformed, or both. Doctor Maddow, do some homework.
Thank you, thank you Reveal5; I wanted to scream that NO one corrected them on this lie...the cuts are over 10 years by stop paying private insurance companies for doing nothing for Medicare recepients but being paid billions to so call manage their insurance coverage (like the bull we paid for with Banks for so called managing & providing student loans for decades thanks to the other big crook Reagan). And finally, getting rid of fraud and abuse of Primary MD NOT coordinating care with other treating physicians in such basic services as order prescribing MEDS, xray, mri, & labs already conducted sometimes days & hours by another MD for same disease process...
Rachel, you did an excellent job with Rich what- his-name on Meet the Press. I love the shot in the first segment when they cut away to him after you esstentially obliterated him and he looks, perhaps like he might cry :)
i feel like this election is now Obama vs Ryan, because Mitt doesn't have much of a presence.
Did Paul Ryan say "It's good to be G'Nome?" :] That's telling. Ryan thinks he's a gnome. He's in "MagicLand." He's in someplace new and it's good to be known, and home and in MagicLand. The Ryan Vice Presidential campaign, with corporate media complicity, began on a big lie told unto the masses in the last days of the London Olympics, for all the world to see. . Gobama 2012!
Just on Ed Show - Paul Ryan and Inside Trading on BusinessInsider.com - going to check it out.
here the web address : http://www.businessinsider.com/paul-ryan-insider-trading-2012-8
I'd be curious about what you think about this claim by Veterans Today...
http://www.veteranstoday.com/2012/08/12/foreign-cash-disqualifies-romney-from-presidential-bid/
It sure seems as if an examination of Romney/Ryan's claim that ObamaCare strips $740 billion from Medicare would be in order. It would seem as if a reasonable conclusion could be drawn that if media, including MS and NBC, haha, does not correct the misinformation, media is then implicitly and complicitly involved in the Romney/Ryan misinformation campaign, imo. .
