I'm just reposting this here, with some updated developments. I had posted it originally on the 15th, on Bill's preview, but knowing how quickly stories get pushed off the front page, I thought it was a big enough deal to repost.

Hey, it would be great for the #Maddow show to jump all over this story of what's going on with the student newspaper at the University of Georgia (with a well-known journalism program, to boot). Would be good for a short Friday segment, at least.

Red & Black student staffers walk out
By KARAH-LEIGH HANCOCKKARAH.HANCOCK@ONLINEATHENS.COM – published Wednesday, August 15, 2012
The student editorial staff of the University of Georgia's The Red & Black newspaper walked out Wednesday evening after a non-student was named editorial director with final say on all editorial content.
The Red & Black's student editor-in-chief, Polina Marinova, along with other top student editors and staff members, walked out after Ed Morales, who had been the paper's editorial adviser and then became editorial director, was given full editorial control of the newspaper

Editor in Chief's statement about the walkout:

This is seriously outrageous. It should damage the credibility of the journalism (undergrad and grad) program as well (students can't apprentice at a student paper that is a mere university house organ).
Also, makes me wonder what is behind it too. GA is another state that can tip creepy real quickly (I say that as someone who lived there in early 90s and thru most of the 2000s).

Here's some more on this story.
The NY Times picked it up today here.
Adam Goldstein has a piece I really like a lot. Good detail.
Read what the Board was forcing on the student editors: No headlines in a language other than English. Forcing space for "good" news, like grip and grins. It's outrageous.
One of my proudest moments as a professor in the early 90s was taking my journalism students from Valdosta State up to Athens for the GA Press Association annual student journalism awards.
We were a small program and watched the Athens students and others from GA Tech and GA State clean up on the awards. But there was a nice win, for one of my best kids, the editor of the VSU Spectator (where we also at one time had to fight against university censorship).
It is just hard for me to think of this happening at UGA. I can't imagine how demoralizing it must be for the students and faculty.
Here's another good one, from Gawker:
College Newspaper Memo: Cut Down on ‘Journalism,’ Don’t Describe African Americans as ‘Burr-Headed’
Heh.
Rachelle,
I think you should look into a recent interview that occurred with former governor Tim Pawlenty last Sunday the 12th of Sept. with George STEPHANOPOULOS. The following is the transcript that is very interesting...
------------------------
STEPHANOPOULOS: You did bring up the tax returns. How many years of tax returns did you provide to the Romney campaign?
PAWLENTY: Well, I don't know the exact number, George, but I -- you know, there were several years, I believe.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Several years. So more than two?
PAWLENTY: Well, we don't get into the details of the vetting process, but I -- I gave them a bunch of tax returns. I don't remember the exact number of years.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Governor Pawlenty, thanks a lot for coming on this morning. Always good to have you on the program.
PAWLENTY: All right, George, thank you very much.
---------------------------
As you can tell, the Romney campaign finds it important enough as it pertains to the vetting process of VP but not when it comes to Mr. Romney himself.
And as you can tell Ryan is lying about not knowing how many years of returns he put forth.
The country will be on the "right track" when people are sued for lying in public.
Who are you going to trust, Romney and Ryan, or your lying eyes?

Is it just me or do other people think Ryan is like that pony-tailed guy from the bar scene in the movie Good Will Hunting? Spewing somewhat obscure literature references to make people think he's smart. Not gonna work now that your on the big stage.
Hey Rach, I love your work and your show :) In case you read this, I found a link which shows that Ron Paul used to work for the Koch brothers. If you type 'Citizens for a Sound Economy Ron Paul' into google, the first link is from the Library of the University of Kansas. There is a letter there with Ron Paul's signature on it and his title as the Chairman of 'Citizens for a Sound Economy' (which was founded by the Koch brothers). It's dated Dec 1984.
Just a thought, imagine if Joe Biden was a republican. My goodness the stories of hate and demands for his removal from public life would be through the roof here and in the MSM. Why Joe Biden makes Dan Quayle look like a genius. For all the silly references to Mitt Rpmney as "Willard" especially coming from that wacko Al Sharpton on his program. And repeated here in this blog site like trained parrots.... I will bet NONE of you know as a fact that former VP Dan Quayle's real name is James Danforth Quayle. I guess that goofball Sharpton and other msnbcers would be taunting him with "James Danforth" as they do Romney with "Willard" or "Mittens". And you people would be parroting the "James Danforth" taunt.
Another side note, all the talk of recent here about Ryan's possible "plagiarism incidents". Not withstanding this all political false hoods from the left. Here on MSNBC they actually bring up the subject. When in fact, Morning Joe contributor Mike Barnicle is in fact a known committed plagiarist who was fired by the Boston Globe for plagiarism and fabricated stories he wrote in 1998 for the Globe. Hypocrites!
Yes, imagine if Joe Biden was a republican having made all the stupid/ignorant and gaffed goofy statements he's made since becoming VP and esp. last week. No wonder they sent him home to Deleware. Yes he's "authentic", authentically dumb. The bigger picture is how inept Obama is because he is the one who selected Biden as VP. Talk about how failed a presidential candidate could possibly be. Palin is a double genius compared to Joe Biden. And Obama cannot even select a qualified VP.
msnbc doesn't cover stories nearly as well as they cover-up stories when marxicrats are at fault. Don't even get me started on the fabricated demonizing "swiftboat" fiasco they've pulled out of a hat here. Or comparably the hiding of the fraudulant admissions into employment gained by Liarwatha Liz Warren at Harvard. Where's the outrage over the shooting at FRC the other day. msnbc protecting the interests of a confirmed LGBT left wing looney. No different than the first failed attempt to "assassinate George Tiller" by a supposed devotee towards Operation Rescue which Maddow never fails to bring up from time to time on her program. It's the very same thing, ...Hypocrite.
Little by little and again in big leaps, the left demonizes conservatives with thier vicious attacks. Sooner or later someone like the FRC shooter will be successful. Ann Coulter has the left radicals perfectly characterized. Demonic. How the Liberal Mob is Endangering America.
Go ahead, tell me now how great a president Joe Biden would be if anything ever happened to the president. Now that is scary!!
Just a few tid bits and random thoughts.
