LIVE VIDEO — Watch coverage of the Republican National Convention from Tampa.

I feel like Christie could be talking for Obama's election.
I have a confession: By 9 I turned the channel to CNN to watch the speeches tonight. I love Rachel's handling of the conventions normally. I love her energy in general and am proudly in line with 99.9% of her opinions. I can appreciate her enthusiasm for the political process in action even when she, like I, don't agree with the 'pub's platform. But the rest of the guys running the panel tonight are driving me nuts. They get an hour of prime time every weeknight to help shape the American narrative for the better. For this however, they need to tone it down and try, or pretend to try, to be more analytical about the convention and its speakers in context rather than blasting them - and in the case of Lawrence's flat out misrepresentation of the crowd reaction for Ann Romney's speech - as if they were doing their own shows or reacting to Akin-esque garbage. Let the 'pubs have their few nights. There's plenty of time to cream them for what they're saying if the commentators shut up long enough to listen.
Totally agree. I'll probably stay with CSPAN through the DEM convention. I Couldn't watch the orchestrated gushing on FOX either... I'm sure the roles will be reversed next week.
You have to call the lies when they happen. If they didn't, they'd never catch up, at the rate they're coming out of the RNC. Also, analyzing falsehoods just gives credence to the lies.
How could Christie balance the budget when he was fraudulent in taking a government helicopter to his sons game, who paid for that?
Chris Christie says forget about Love, go for Respect instead. Someone should inform him that Love encompasses respect.
Chris Christie says the last four years has been "business as usual". Someone should ask him, since when is comprehensive national health care reform "business as usual"? Since when is ending years of discrimination by repealing of Don't Ask Don't Tell "business as usual"? - or Wall Street reform? Or saving the U.S. from a second Great Depression by saving Detroit automotive industry?
Chris Christie warns against putting a bureaucrat in between a person and their doctor just before trumpeting Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan (Mr. Forcible Rape) - that one is just awkward....
I just want to echo on the whole love and respect thing. This is one of those moments where I am seeing a deep philosophical division between how liberals think and how conservatives think. To a conservative, apparently, love, respect, and trust are all mutually exclusive concepts. You can respect a person without loving them or trusting them; you can trust a person without loving them or respecting them; you can love a person without trusting them or respecting them. In my mind the definition of love is trust and respect for whomever it is the term love is being applied to. I can safely say I have never respected a person I did not also trust and love. I can safely say I have never loved a person whom I did not also trust and respect. I can safely say I have never trusted a person whom I did not also love and respect.
Honestly I thought we all agreed on the idea that trust, love, and respect are all mutually inclusive. Apparently that's not true if you're a conservative.
I couldn't agree with you more.
What's also ironic, is Mrs. Romney came out and talked about love, just before Christie came out and immediately denounced it.
Yeah I thought that was interesting too. The theme of her speech was that Mitt is a kind, caring, and compassionate person and that she and her husband have made it through the years with love. That women take care of their children, families, careers, and even themselves with love. Love this and love that (not that there's anything with promoting love- we need so much more if it in the world today!!!). But then immediately she's followed by a guy who says he'd rather be respected than loved (omitting the obvious problem of love and respect not being mutually exclusive). Also look at the reception of Christie versus Romney. Granted Mrs. Romney was well received, but she had nowhere near the reception that Christie got. So apparently the guy spewing not-love is more loved than the woman spewing love. Weird, to say the least (although truth be told if I understood GOP politics I'd probably be blogging at Fox News so, ya know ;-))
Did you also catch how Christie was saying we need to get rid of those meddlesome politicians (even though HE is a politician and is promoting two individuals who have worked in DC or in politics for over 10 years) and how he was saying that the president is the one dividing us (all the while calling Democrats cowards who won't leave and who don't trust Americans and this or that)? I was so mind boggled at the level of contradiction. He can NOT possibly lack that much self-awareness. I refuse to believe that! How is that even possible?! Did you also catch how he'd say that the Democrats and in particular Obama are fear mongering, yet then he spent several minutes on a prolonged metaphor as to how we are about to fall off a cliff and if you put Democrats back in charge they will destroy America? Talk about projection!
Mat 5:46-47 "For if you love [only] those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more [than others]? Do not even the tax collectors do so?
And to that I say...Amen!
Go ahead Rachel! You have done the damned thing. Christie was talking so generalized that it could have been for Pres. Obama. It did not help Romney.
Go Ahead Commentators on MSNBC! You guys are telling it like it is.
Why is Christie continually casting "us" against "them"?
Isn't Romney supposed to be running for president of us all?
Sounds to me like there are a lot of very angry Ron Paul supporters and justifiably so. Your opinions mean nothing; your vote means something; turn towards the light. Just sayin
A Real Yawner
I strongly disagree with the panel's assessments of Ann Romney's speech. I thought it was AWFUL, another missed opportunity.
The delivery was amateurish, but not in a charming way. Ann giggled, and the pace of delivery was terrible. The pandering factor was very obvious. The message was unfocused. Her attempt to identify with "struggling" Americans, especially mothers, completely lacked credibility. Chin held high, she came off as an aged prom queen. Ann's promise that Mitt would work extra hard so that Americans could work less hard rang hollow. We can trust Mitt to tell the truth? Or did she mean "every truth" necessary to win the election?
If Mrs. Romney's goal was to introduce the real Mitt's softer side, his integrity, and his plan to rescue the American economy, she failed absolutely.
Perhaps the pundits were simply being polite. Even the convention audience of other white grandparents seemed to either doze off or look at the time.
100% agree - she seems very odd and fake to me - see post below
Rick Santorum said that half this country is on some kind of government assistance. Does he want Americans to go hungry? Does he realize that the food stamps is only 2 percent comes from the federal government? Does he realize that 1 in 5 families have a hard time feeding their families? No he doesn't because he is wealthy and out of touch with the average family. Is Rick Santorum, Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney going to feed all these families? The answer to that is no!!! This is the party of Rick Santorum take away your food, social security and Medicare!!!
Well, the rich like to talk, but they are taking government assistance more than anyone else is. The assistance for creating tax loop-holes to hide the money they hog as if they will live long enough to use it all. Hidden money that will not recirculate back into the system to create jobs and boost our gdp.
If they're religious, a fraction of what would have been paid in taxes will go to their church so that they can be eternally venerated, whether here on earth or some other guaranteed higher place. Like the Medici.... Nothing has changed.
I need to vent! Can someone tell me which group of women did Romney's wife actually address when she said they know which doctor to call at night? LOL seriously! Is that what the ordinary woman does when one of their baby's get sick? Can someone tell me what the percentage is of women who actually have the privilege of knowing and affording doctors that still make house calls or answer their phones in the middle of the night? What about that huge percentage of women that have very basic med insurance? What about that percentage of women that have no insurance at all, and the only doctors they'll ever see are at a county hospital after an all night wait?
No doubt - not sure how she is supposed to "humanize" this campaign. She seems plastic - the interview she did awhile ago when she said that they would not release any more tax returns b/c people just attack them made her look like a queen behind a moat it was her "let them eat cake moment"
Yuca,
To answer your question is no. We either take our child to the emergency room, which I've done many times, because my children couldn't breathe because of having asthma. I couldn't wait till Monday when their doctor was available. That is true about the long wait, which I'm sure Ann Romney never had to wait for any doctor in an emergency room. They had a doctor that made house calls. So on that point she is out of touch with the women she is trying to make a point to. Today we have more things to worry about. Medical costs are rising and not getting any cheaper. If my child gets sick on the week night or weekend how am I going to pay for this visit to the emergency room, how am I going to pay for the medicine the doctor prescribed? Ann Romney never had to worry about any of this due to both had wealthy parents. She is out of touch with women and please she does not love us.
Was the MSNBC panel just being nice to Ann? I am sorry I know she is not a politician but her speech was awful and kind of CREEPY. She awkwardly tried to describe problems that middle class or poor people face and then she paused offered no solutions and then WOOPED loudly and said I know you are out there
????? What was that?
Right? Cold, calculated and definitely directed at a specific group of people.
Early on in her speech I thought she was on something - maybe "mother's little
helper" - I am shocked at the lack of quality of a national speech - maybe
it is hard to give a great speech when you really do not believe what you are
saying
I really can't slam Ann Romney. I didn't hear the speech, but she seems OK. Even Mitt seems like an OK guy when he is off the clock. Gov. Christy? A jerk. And Governor, if President Obama was playing to the polls there would be no health care law. Yes, the GOP works to change the polls, using lies.
Tonight was not about what the Republicans said, it's about what they did not say. They want you to focus on small business and family values thus diverting your attention from the fact that they are servants to the Corporations and the Wealthy. This is what Rachel should be discussing:
Why and How - Why is unemployment, gas prices and the debt so high (cause and effect) and if elected how are they specifically going to fix our economy? And how did they fix these same issues in the Republican states? Cutting govenment jobs?
Any business person knows that the only option to reducing the Federal Debt is a combination of increasing revenues and reducing costs. You cannot fix the deficit by just cutting Federal Government spending, you have to increase revenues. In a recession with unemployment over 8% with millions of middle class Americans struggling to pay their bills, the ONLY option to increase revenues is to restore the Clinton tax rates for the 1% so that Romney's tax rate is higher than mine, which is over 20%.
Where are the jobs the Republicans promised which got them elected in 2010? Give us one example of legislation created and passed by Republicans that have helped Americans since 2010. Didn't we hear this same story two years ago?
How many jobs were created by American Corporations during the Obama presidency? How many jobs were elimated or outsourced by American Corporations in the last 4 years?
Why are the Republican Super Pacs spending $140M+ to defeat President Obama and the Democrats? These elite business people don't invest vast sums of money without knowing that they will get that money back and much, much more money if the Republicans take control of our government. Follow the money people and remember, if you vote Republican, your casting your vote for Corporate Executives and the 1%.
BTW - who do you think the Governors of Louisiana and Mississippi (the RED states) called tonight when the hurricane hit their state? I'm confused, I thought they did not support BIG government or need Federal assistance.
Can't bring myself to watch it. All the lies. I'd go hoarse yelling at the television.
But I did watch a lovely documentary tonight about feral parrots living in San Francisco.
I think the best thing for my sanity is to wait until next week for my convention fix.
Just in San Francisco? I thought feral parrots lived all across the US. They're called Fox's viewership.
Romney should wear that police officers uniform he use to pull people over with at the Republican Convention of Deceivers and Liars. That should help him show his strength of power and authority over people.
