I'm far from convinced they're right, but plenty of Republican insiders are skeptical about Mitt Romney's chances in November. Politico reported yesterday, "Republicans believe Obama's governing defects should make a GOP victory virtually inevitable, but Romney's political defects make it only a long-shot possibility."
But if Republicans are working under that assumption, it means some in the party are already considering the next election. Some are hiding these ambitions better than others.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry said "absolutely" he would consider another presidential run. Speaking from the Republican convention in Tampa, Fla., the Republican governor did not hesitate when Chuck Todd, host of Daily Rundown, asked him if he would ever consider doing so again.
"Oh absolutely. There's a long time until 2016 and a lot of good things can happen," he said.
Right, but according to Republicans, in 2016, Mitt Romney should be running for re-election.
In fairness to Perry, he went on to say he hoped Romney wins, but that doesn't change the fact that he's talking openly about running four years from now. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) has also expressed an interest in running in 2016, which suggests he too expects Romney to lose.
I wonder if these guys realize they're not doing the GOP ticket any favors. I also wonder if they care.

It never ceases to amaze me how these lying, Vulture Capitalists believe no one sees what they do and how many lies they tell.
They think about the future, while in the present, most of America is struggling to survive the havoc that their lies and fascistic actions have brought down on us.
There may not be an America left for them to try and run for the Presidency of in 2016 and I don't believe they spend one second worrying about that or caring about that.
I am so disgusted with these low-life, Radical, Right-Wing Republicans.
It surprises me that republicans I have known all my life, that voted republican no matter what, also share your disgust.
Gee, sharks do turn on their own. These people deep down realize that Mittens is the worst candidate but he's the one that is being put forward so they must support him. Despite the economy, and an obstructionist Congress, and the lies propagated by the lame-stream media, and the disenfranchisement of voters, deep down the GOP knows that President Obama is still head and shoulders above Mittens!
Perry is so bone-dumb that he probably didn't realize what he was saying. Christie, on the other hand, has known and meant it every time he's talked about 2016. He never believed that Romney could, would, or should win, and there seems to be a touch of authentic hatred in their relationship.
(I should say I agree with Christie and the Republican pros Steve quotes, and, unusually, disagree with Steve. I've been predicting a landslide loss for Romney ever since the first couple of drop-outs in the race didn't bring any noticeable increase in his support. The Colbert jokes about 'tomorrow's the day we've been dreading, when we have to start liking Mitt' always rang true, and the way even Nasty Newt and Little Rickey the Perpetual Altar Boy could wound him in the primaries showed how little deep support he had.)
Perry - "Absolutely I'd run again in 2016... oops."

Proving Two Rights DO Make a Wrong!
;-)
Ann Romney wants to try to show that Mitt loves her. But Hitler loved too so what does it really matter that Mitt loves Ann. That doesn’t change anything to what Romney really is. The nonsense attempts of Ann’s rhetoric are pointless, especially when Romney’s actions have shown a whole different story that can never be hidden. You can love all you want and be the Devil in disguise too just like Hitler, Stalin, and many other people who have been the worst nightmares on this planet.
Right. Looking for someone to date, and someone to lead the nation... well, you know...
Meanwhile, Democratic candidates all over the country don't even want to be seen with Obama and are staying away from the Charlotte Convention in droves. It doesn't look like politicians on either side of the aisle have much confidence in their nominees.
Those tend to be Democrats serving in primarily conservative states and districts, so, it's understandable that they have to walk a fine line.
"Republicans believe Obama's governing defects should make a GOP victory virtually inevitable..."
That's the GOP's problem right there - it believes its own twisted version of reality is the actual reality. In reality, the GOP doesn't have a shred of credibility to moan about the economy given that they created the mess in the first place, then did everything possible to block the Prez' efforts to repair the damage, and in spite of that, Obama still succeeded in getting the economy back on track.
It is frustrating to see many pundits always talking about "the weak economy" with not a shred of acknowledgement that 1) it was caused by Republicans 2) Republicans have actively worked to stall any recovery whatsoever.
Lots of folks want to be President.
The problem arises when they have to tell the voters why they want to be President.
(And I won't even get into the HOW, that comes after January 20th)
Steve Benen, you may be “skeptical” of these public prognosticator polls, but these polls over the years have been generally accurate. I don’t think Mitt Romney could win in a fair election, though. Even the republicans don’t think so. That’s why the republicans are trying to steal the election, with voter suppression efforts.
It must be disheartening for a thoughtful GOP presidential aspirant (I know, oxymoron). They must see that their base of white, racist, uneducated males is shrinking, and current Republican policies offer no hope of attracting the demographics of the future electorate. 2012 may be the last opportunity for voter suppression and appeals to xenophobic fears to actually work. If Romney loses, we may not see a serious chance for another GOP president for decades.
wouldn't that be wonderful!!
I can only say to the Rickster "bring it" I think out of all of the candidates this cycle, Rick will have the worst video evidence against him, especially with the secession comments making him look like an anarchist.....
