Live coverage of the Republican National Convention

Isn't Paul Ryan considered a LEADER for his party in the House? Hmmm wonder if he takes any of the blame for this economy?
I thought I was inured to some pretty nauseous stuff, but I have to admit, listening to Ryan is really testing my intestinal fortitude. How does anyone with a brain listen to that and not have the need to throw up.
Ryan reminds me of a cult leader.
What a load of crock I had to turn off the convention when Mr. Ryan made statement about giving the Run Around to the American People. It is not the current Administration that is giving us the run around, but the RNC which should be renamed the Run-Around National Committee. Since they can't stand up for themselves and oppose the Tea-Party supporters they then whine about why we can't have it our way. They want to decide which citizens or nationality is allowed to vote. Not allow all citizens to vote.
Good god, that was nauseating. And now Brian Williams needs to change his diaper.
Wow Paul, Obama gets credit for the downgrading of America's credit rating? And you say he did it for political reasons?
Funny, I seem to remember a certain Republican "led" Congress not voting to raise the debt ceiling in a timely manner having more than a bit to do with that, not to mention a certain Senate Minority Leader championing the primary focus of making sure Obama only gets one term in office. Now thats what I call "a limited government."
But, then again, Rush Limbaugh did insinuate that Obama had something to do with Hurricane Isaac moving toward Tampa during the convention to interfere with it.
So if that is your normal, I just have to ask, what color is the sky in your world Paul? It's blue where I live.
Are you serious? You are saying that the fact the debt ceiling wasn't raised in a timely manner and THATS WHY our credit rating was downgraded? Wow. The only thing raising the debt ceiling did is allow America to BORROW MORE MONEY which we shouldnt have been spending in the first place.
Katie12345678:
Um, yeah.
Part of the Standard's and Poor statement on the downgrade:
This is not how debt ceilings work....
Ryan did a wonderful job of telling us how we will become a theocracy if he and Mitt are elected. As an American citizen and veteran I'm proud to say keep your bible off of me.
So...how is it that if you feel left behind, it's not your fault, it's the fault of your leaders, as Ryan claims. Whatever happened to that Republican ideal of personal responsibility? And speaking of leaders, isn't Paul Ryan already one? And what about the Republican congress, aren't they supposed to be demonstrating leadership?
I have been making the same complaint too @Kath. These people are in a position of leadership. If they do not like what is going on they are in the position to change it. Yet they act like they are powerless without some central focus point to tell them what to do. Perhaps they really are helpless without being told what to do- it would explain a lot of their policies (in so far as the totalitarianism that has randomly sprouted is concerned). But presumably you get elected to office to lead whether that be as sheriff, dog catcher, or the US House of Representatives. If you can't do this then wouldn't taking responsibility and not blaming other people (the thing they decry Obama for supposedly doing) mean that you'd be taking responsibility for bills not being passed and you'd be working to do as much?
But then again on The Daily Show Senator Marco Rubio stated that Republicans are filibustering the bills that they want to amend and have passed. He said this as an explanation for why they were filibustering and why they weren't allowing legislation to go through. He then said it's the Democrats fault that the bills aren't being passed because the Democrats aren't allowing amendments. While this is a. not factually true and b. not how the US Senate works he also c. missed the fact that he had just created a logical paradox by proposing this argument.
I think we should make a list. On one side list all the programs/bills that President Obama has introduced. Then on the other side, list all that never passed because of the filibusters. All were voted down by a Republican party that has more interest in personal gain than in the best interest of our country.
Do you not understand why bills were voted down? How about you find the one that's supposed to help the elderly but also has the massive PORK about buying treadmills for laboratory shrimp. Then talk about something you know.
Yes, @Katie, we understand perfectly why the bills were voted down:
Republicans Had It In For Obama Before Day 1:

The Republican party is built on lies, Rush and Fox generates the lies. We are in a dark time in U.S. and I don't think we can overcome it. The supreme court has crushed the Democrated party and the vote. Pac money can defeat small town representatives with negative adds thanks to the supreme court. The supreme court is the most powerful and dangerous people in the U.S. They appointed Bush and did not count the vote, they do not care about democracy-they want their party to win. If the election is close Obama will not win. They keep people from voting and the will still votes at the box (Ohio). They will put bad voting machines in the Democratic districts. It's a lost cause guys give it up unless your 10% ahead.
@Jeff
It's easy to feel discouraged, but we need to FOCUS and WORK HARD. Once we give up, then they have WON and our country is LOST.
Come to think of it, isn't that what terrorists do? The goal is to intimidate and threaten until the will to resist is gone and they get their way.
Regarding Ryan's speech. A trivial point, but it made me laugh. Him and I are of the same generation.
I find it interesting that his play list starts with ACDC and ends with Zepplin.
Two bands that are foreign and that the right have often accused of being occult.
I don't judge them.I don't believe that. It's music and art. It is just a trend of what?!? moments like when he claimed to like Rage Against the Machine.
Short version to paraphrase Kurt Cobain. I think he likes to sing along, but he doesn't know what it means.
Ryan knows nothing but lies from him taking social security death benefits when his dad died and saved the money to go to college, while his family was well to do. Talk about a fraud and a liar. Career politician voted for the two wars, bailed out the banks, please. You say you want small government, what a crock, when you want to control women's rights and the the right to choose. You want to push your views on the Americans and we are going to push back and not vote for you or Romney. You both are lying to the American people so you can get elected when your voting records says it all. Romney didn't raise taxes but he raised everything else. He raised marriage license's, drivers license's and many more items. They both want to cut education, why not they have their education, they are rich and can afford college for their children. But what happens to the rest of our children. That's right Romney said shop around and borrow money from your parents which they don't have. Romney/Ryan can we borrow 20 grand so our children can go to college so they can build their future!
100% agree also throw in that Ryan, despite his hatred of government, has spent his entire adult life working in the government except for a couple of months in a made up position in his family’s business. Also of course, the Ryan family business is a government contractor that got its start from government spending on roads and highways – he is a total hypocrite – like the entire party instead of being anti-government spending they should be honest and say they are for no NEW government spending which might help others get ahead.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with businesses working for the government as contractors it just is odd for someone who benefited from it heavily to turn around and say, the government is anti-business. Basically republicans love government spending that makes them rich just not any other kind.
Did I just hear Condoleezza Rice try to give credit to GW for the killing of Bin Laden? Wasn't he the one that was running around saying he didn't know where he was and he didn't waste his time thinking about him?
After listening to the right give answers, I sometimes feel like I've lost my mind.
Obama's term. has killed many...many top alkida. Baby Bush did noting ...but his in a state of the union address was lies about weapons of mass destruction.
I would like to have the names and face of the alkida that has been killed during Obama term. Does anyone remember 9-11? Bush did notihng, the Republican party did nothing.
I feel safer with Obama in office. We should wave the flag and be proud.
The Republicans did nothing, did nothing but lie.
Romnet-Ryan theme song should be "Lies, Lies, Lies" by the Thompson Twins. For a pair who claim to be so religous there is no truth in them whatsoever. I guess they think God is trapped in their respective chirches and can't get out to see what they do the rest of the week!
As usual...both right and wrong...The final GM SUVs came off the assembly line in December 2008; in April 2009 the plant built its last Isuzu...so it closed GM production under Bush and completely shutdown under Obama...

I recall Fisker received at least $193 million of a $529 million in taxpayer funds to build plug-in hybrids in Finland...claiming they could not find a suitable place in the US...perhaps this plant would have worked???
Rachael tell your esteemed guests to check the facts...according to Wikipedia: A skeleton crew continued to work at Janesville Assembly through June, 2009, completing the Janesville/Isuzu light truck contract. So the plant WAS still opened and could have been saved if Barak Obama did indeed have the political clout that he claimed to have! So he did in fact break his promise.
@Mad Dow
Darn it!! What makes you think the President has the authority or political clout to make that happen?!?
Think for a second about what was happening between December 2008 and April 2009. Remember that sense of free-fall as hundreds of thousands of jobs were being lost?
Stupid!!
Obama takes office in January and the plant closes officially in June, but only after downsizing to a skeleton crew during the previous presidency. And it's Obama's fault.
Seems legit
#sarcasm
At the most you do realize your argument would mean that they are technically correct in that the plant was considered closed, but that it was finishing up final orders before shutting it's doors permanently, yes?
On Janesville- The facts seem a little more complicated. The plant was not entirely closed in December 2008; a "skeleton crew" remained into spring 2009 to complete the last of several orders. It is fair to say it was basically closed, though not entirely.
Interestingly, on at least one occasion (2010) since its shut-down, GM has put the factory on stand-by status for re-opening, due to GM's slow but steady rebound.
In other words, Walker's response -- that Obama's promise should have included some magical recovery that re-opened a plant that (essentially) closed before he even took office--nearly took place!
Rachel Maddow's panel just tried to lambaste and embarrass Gov Walker by objecting to Paul Ryan's comment about the GM plant in Wisconsin. Folks, the plant was finally idled in 2010. It was left with a skeleton crew by June, 2009. So both Ryan and Walker were entirely right about when the plant closed. They may be wrong about the economic implications of the bailout, but they weren't wrong on the facts.
The folks on Ms. Maddow's show should have done their homework before opening their mouths.
Thank you for that reply and here's the article to prove it

Yeah that link did not help your argument. The decision was made to close the plant in 2008. At that point the plant ceased to function in the capacity that is had for decades.
There was nothing Obama could have done to prevent this.
And instead of admitting that Paul and Walker lied or ignoring it alltogehter, you try to help them perpetuate the lie.
http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/43254027.html
You are ignorant of the situation. The plant closed somtime in 2010, the Governor of WI and Paul Ryan, who lives in Jaynesville know what they are talking about. Obama gave a campaign speech at the plant in 2008 in which he promised the plant would remain open for the next 100 years. Regardless, MSNDC are the liars.
Your link was dated April 2009, Al Sharpton and Ed Scultz both argued the plant closed before Obama took office. Matthews is still accusing Ryan and Walker of lying.
Confused by the Right... You heard correctly.. that finger wagging hag did say that.
Whats with her hand movements when she's talking? MSNBC makes me sick
with their coverage of this RNC... kissing these right wing racists asses as if they
were REAL politicians...
Hire a better fact checker... the GM Plan in Janesville actually closed in April 2009. Regards.
http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/43254027.html
Here we go again with the lies of Paul Ryan and Scott Walker lying about the GM plant closing in Wisconsin. The President wasn't in office until 2009 and the plant closed in Dec 2008. Ed Shultz called him on it and Scott Walker was studdering and failing to come up with a truthful answer. Bush was President during that time and why didn't Paul Ryan ask for a stimulis for his GM plant in his home town, because he already got stimulis money earlier and never thought about his buddies that was working at this plant. He didn't care about how they were going to make ends meat. Talk about double standards.
You are incorrect.
http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/43254027.html
Try reading the LOCAL paper instead of the WSJ for facts ... the WSJ has no time to report on a skeleton crew.
Then Ryan and Walker should get their facts straight too with the Skelton crew left behind to finish orders, which they never mention. Thank you for the information.
Walker admin offered $200MM in tax incentives for GM to re-open plant in 2010...still a possibility
The MSNDC talking heads are still saying the plant closed in 2008. Dam, they cant google?
...Because it did close in 2008. You apparently do not understand the concept of work orders.
Does that blue part of the virtual flag waving behind the speakers make anyone else queasy, wait maybe it is just what the speakers are saying
Come on Rachel, lets see if you have the guts and integrity to tell Al Sharpton and Ed Schultz that once again they're full of crap and got their facts wrong about when the GM plant actually closed!
I recall Fisker received at least $193 million of $529 million in taxpayer funds to build plug-in hybrids in Finland...claiming they could not find a suitable place in the US...perhaps the closed GM plant in Janesville, WI could have worked?
Why is the RNC being anchored by Rachel Maddow? Why not Ed Shultz, or Melissa Harris-
Perry? I'm really tired of seeing Rachel basking in the sound of her own voice
Disagree (although Ed and Melissa are good), Rachel is smart, respectful of guests which is rare and deserves a ton of credit for shining a light on the madness going on with the Ohio voting rules - I did not hear anyone else talking about that until she strongly brought it up and that should have been a major story, republican tactics in Ohio IMO should be illegal and at the least criminally investigated.
I agree with 100 percent on all that you wrote, Rachel is always respectful even when others aren't. The governor in Ohio and Pennsylvania should go to jail for voter suppression. The governor of Florida lost his fight with trying to suppress the vote. Which by the way I didn't vote for because of all the Medicare fraud hs company did. He paid the highest fine ever, but he should've done jail time instead of being governor of Florida.
