At a basic level, what bothers me about politicians who lie, especially at a national level, is that the deceptions are insulting. A candidate who knows the truth, but makes a deliberate decision to deceive, is working from the assumption that Americans are suckers.
And last night, Paul Ryan made painfully clear that he thinks we're all profound idiots who'll believe an endless string of lies, so long as they're packaged well and presented with conviction. Jonathan Cohn suggested last night's address may have been the "most dishonest convention speech" ever delivered, and I can't think of a close second.
It was a truly breathtaking display of brazen dishonesty. Paul Ryan looked America in the eye and without a hint a shame, lied to our face.
Ryan lied about President Obama's auto-industry rescue, blaming the administration for a plant closing orchestrated by President Bush. Ryan lied about Medicare, falsely accusing Obama of undermining the system. Ryan lied about the debt downgrade, falsely blaming the president for a downgrade caused by Ryan and congressional Republicans.
Ryan lied about the Simpson-Bowles commission, falsely accusing Obama of walking away from debt reduction, and ignoring the fact that Ryan himself fought to ensure the Simpson-Bowles commission never even released a report. Ryan lied about his plans for the safety net, saying he intends to "protect the weak" when he budget plan intends to gut public investments that benefit the poor.
Ryan lied about the debt, saying Obama "has added more debt than any other president before him," when the truth is, that was George W. Bush -- who added over $5 trillion to the debt thanks in large part to congressional votes cast by Paul Ryan.
Ryan lied about the Recovery Act, calling the stimulus "a case of political patronage, corporate welfare, and cronyism at their worst," when reality shows the exact opposite. Ryan lied about small businesses, accusing Obama of raising their taxes, when he actually cut their taxes.
Paul Ryan, the man the media and Republicans celebrate as a bold truth-teller, told one lie after another, demonstrating a near-pathological disdain for honesty. His speech presented no substantive ideas, no policy solutions, and no bold positions on any key issue, but it included enough falsehoods to choke a fact-checker -- all because he assumes you're a fool and journalists are too incompetent to separate fact from fiction.
Is he right?
Dan Amira called the speech "appallingly disingenuous and shamelessly hypocritical," but added this gem:
Most of the millions of people who watched the speech on television tonight do not read fact-checks or obsessively consume news 15 hours a day, and will never know how much Ryan's case against Obama relied on lies and deception. Ryan's pants are on fire, but all America saw was a barn-burner.
CNN's Wolf Blitzer said he counted "seven or eight" claims that "fact checkers will have some opportunities to dispute," but concluded the lies didn't matter because it was "a powerful speech" that gave Republicans what they "were hoping for."
CNN's Erin Burnett added, "There will be issues with some of the facts, but it motivated people."
Let that sentence roll around in your brain for a moment, and ponder what it means for our country.
Ryan lied uncontrollably, but that's not terribly important. It undermines our democracy and the basic norms of the American political system, but no one seems to care anymore. Ryan thinks we're idiots, but his cynicism matters less than the electoral implications.
The United States is better than Paul Ryan's dishonesty. It has to be. Our future depends on it.

It is now clear that the Romney-Ryan ticket is dead set on running the most extreme, out of touch, outrageous, dishonest, hypocritical and mindless campaign in the history of modern American presidential politics. THe campaign itself has said on numerous occasions that "facts" are meaningless and they will ignore them. This is not only absurd, but a dangerous trend for our nation and our democracy. We have Paul Ryan on stage throwing red meat lies to a crowd of the most radical elements of the GOP imaginable. Ryan is no budget genius; he is a phony. Ryan endorses tax cuts for thew rich, subsidies for Big Oil, and record spending on military contractors with no way to pay for them. At the same time, he wants to end Medicare as we know it and leave tens of millions of Americans without way to pay their bills. This is how we grow the economy? No way... - principled progressive
The Republicans want to increase the Defense Budget, does that include increasing the following (from https://www.facebook.com/WarCosts )
1. 170 Military Golf Courses - what does that cost to maintain (alternet.org)
2. 21.5 Million is what the annual salary of a CEO in the Arms Industry (pogo.org)
3. 388 Million for Marching Bands (newsyahoo.com) - maybe they could go entertain the children crying from hunger once Romney/Ryan have cut the programs that help the children.
4. 35 Billion for up keep of an Aircraft Cemetary (military.com)
5. 174 Million for NASCAR Sponsorship (dyn.politico.com)
6. 2.1 Million for Sponsorship of Ultimate Fighting Championship Events (military.com)
Lorr, you are so right. Every time I hear a Republican talking about how vital it is to begin paying down the debt (first of all, the WRONG move during a recession so bad it was almost the Second Great Depression), I can't believe that they are genuine. And here's why.
They never discuss slashing the outrageously bloated defense budget, and they never even talk about raising taxes on the rich, which are at an all-time low since before 1960.
No. All they ever point to are the "entitlement" programs that we all pay into in order to use them if we ever need them. Entitlement is the word for Insurance for Republicans.
No. All they ever point to is those programs that would help the poor, help the sick, help the least of us.
If they EVER said that they were willing to, god forbid, PAY for the wars they start, or EVER said that they would slash the defense budget or raise taxes on the richest 1%, then perhaps I could begin to believe them - that this debt problem is real.
It isn't real. It's just their way of cutting and destroying all of the programs that they've been railing against for 50 years, and they ingeniously came up with a way to do it - by themselves raising the debt to staggering levels until the public BEGGED them to cut those programs.
Clever, but it won't work.
Precisely why he and the rest of his ilk (both rep/dem) should be convicted and hung for treason!
Yeah advocating violence against elected officials isn't cool
Thank you Lor-261132; documented facts are deadly weapons against bull@!$%#. We should also include the so-called security/anti-terrorism industry that thrives on government contracts while it supplies faulty technology that protects no one.
The bloated aspect of the defense budget, some of which you've exposed, could be slashed without weakening the actual strength of our military, the strength the right wing-nuts say they're concerned about. But military and security industry contractors use their massive profits to buy politicians, so sound budget reductions are unlikely. I remember, in the early years of the Iraq war boondoggle, when W pissed away the Clinton budget surplus. Cheney and the neocons insisted, then, that debt was good for the economy because it stimulated it. Only other neocons believed those lies then. Now they say they don't believe their own lies.
Who said anything about advocating violence? I said "tried (in a court of law) and hung for treason (a law)... hanging isn't violence, its a penalty for breaking the law just like the electric chair duh! Or, are you one of those republicans that feel "elected officials" are above the law?
@Activist, you said a lot of things but without sources to back them up. Are we just supposed to take your mean-spirited rant for truth?
@Lorr-2611132 Kudos for sources but really, all of these things you have mentioned have been appropriated by Repubs w/o any Dem resistance? Had you ever considered that perhaps that sort of wasteful spending should have been cut from the budget already? Seems this administration has ignored it, huh?
@CagleMarlowe You do understand that no matter how altruistic we are we are limited by reality in what we can do... Have you ever compared for instance the amount of financial liability of the "entitlements" juxtaposed to all of the other spending combined? That might account for why they come up first and most when people speak of the budget deficit that will destroy our economy.
It is nice to promise people things, but everyone knows the system will crash no matter what percent you tax the rich. Lady do you know that all of the money and assets of the "1%" couldn't support this country even for a year?
Oh, well I guess everyone doesn't know that. You don't even believe that the debt crisis is real! And you actually believe that Repubs started the wars... And that "conservatives" created all the U.S. debt "by themselves"... To say nothing of being all hard-hearted monsters who hate "entitlements" to the needy.
CM, the things you have said are jaw-dropping!
@Sofferclese You thanked Lor 2611132 for the documentation then left everything you said undocumented... ?
@ Cartoonthenews! Appreciate the admonishion
@GovHater, you crack me up!
I am truly getting a "Liberal" education here!
Assume Republican convention viewers are idiots. Welcome to the new "normal".
Great devise comment. Some people actually listen to both sides before deciding rather than blindly following one of the two major parties; some people let others do their thinking for them - which I fear is the new normal.
Republicans lie.
Democrats degrade those who don't agree with their viewpoint.
We built this convention
We built this convention
We built this convention on lies and fear
As an Independent Entrepreneur, I knew who I was voting for by actually being present and aware of what was and is happening. Unfortunately, out of respect for both parties, I did watch all 18 Republican Debates. I did not hear or see anything other than I already knew. I touched in on the RNC Convention to Elect Jeb Bush in 2016 and again nothing new. Freedom for the Rich on everything and indentured servitude for the rest of us. Nothing new. GOP are not "The Grand Old Party" and haven't been for some time. Liberal to me means, having an open mind and heart. Conservative by definition is to stand very still. And hope you don't get hit by a bus.
Hmm, I think Steve works too hard already, but perhaps we need a Son of Mendacity Chronicles.
Ha! I presume you mean that we need to follow Lyin' Ryan the way we follow Mendacious Mitt? Here's how: http://www.policymic.com/articles/13822/how-to-tell-if-paul-ryan-is-lying
Thanks for the link. Fact-checkers are having a field day already with this mendacious rodeo clown.
Mitt's Mendacity isn't even news any more. Everyone knows it, but those who hate Obama for what he is (meaning looks like) brush it aside and hold their noses while supporting Mitt. The chronicles of Lyin' Ryan won't fare much better.
Steve, another great post. The failure of most in the MSM to call out Mitt & Co. for their blatant lies is truly disturbing. Are they really that lazy, or just cowed by their corporate ownership? For what it's worth, I've left a comment here: http://www.cnn.com/feedback/
The interview with Walker at the end of the night was surreal, where he insisted he could blame Obama for the closure of a GM plant that closed a month before he took office "if only he had followed Romney's advice and allowed a 'managed bankruptcy'."
Not sure how Obama could have "retroactively" prevented that closure, but in Romney's world, you can "retroactively" do anything and change history.
I remind everyone this is the same group that was OUTRAGED by the Joe Soptic ad, and then cited the TIMELINE of Soptic wife's coverage & eventual death as their defense as to why Romney was not responsible.
Not to mention that the GM rescue was, in fact, a managed bankruptcy.
Didn't Mittens write to let the auto industry fail? And how is it that President Obama's "policies" failed, when the obstructionist GOP didn't vote on them - thereby NOT implementing them, ergo they couldn't have failed!?
Maybe it's me, but after watching those speeches last night I was truly disheartened, dejected, outraged, enraged, dumb-struck, etc. by the response of the "family values" crowd to the continuous lies on parade by every speaker!
What I heard Republicans say last night (maybe spin) was that candidate Obama promised to keep that Ohio auto plant open. Does anyone know if this was, in fact, a campaign promise?
Paul Ryan - Dangerous ideas with a friendly face
Thank you Rachel! You are completely right!!!!! Paul Ryan has a friendly face. But when you listen to the lies he told last night and look at what he proposes, he does not look good at all. Ryan wants to privatize Medicare and turn it into a voucher program. Even his second proposal would turn it into a program of "haves and have nots." The Ryan budget cuts billions to low and middle income families while preserving tax cuts for millionaires.
Paul Ryan has proposed legislation to narrow the definition of rape to "forcible rape". He has co-sponsored legislation to force women seeking abortions to have invasive ultrasounds. Paul Ryan supports "personhood" for fertilized eggs that would outlaw certain forms of birth control.
Paul Ryan may have a friendly face. But a friendly face that lies to the American people to achieve an extreme agenda can be a dangerous thing.
I still see tax the rich more! Millionaires are getting all the breaks! I pay more in taxes every year than over 60% of the people in the U.S. make. I am not bragging just making a point. I worked hard, long hours, went to school. Paid a price to get to where I am and I pay a lot of Taxes, I donate to charities and you people act like I should do more. Most people I know in my income bracket did the same thing. Their money did not magically appear. I grew up very poor and knew I did not want to live that way si I did something about it.I have had disapointments but I picked myself up and kept on. Now I am suppose to pay more of my money to help people that were not willing to pay the price I did? That is what you are saying. You could take all the money from every rich person in America and it still would not touch the problem of the national budget. I gladly pay my fair share of taxes, I gladly donate to charities, but ask me for more? I don't think so.
No Jaime that is not what is being said. What is being said is that, you appear to believe that the people who are getting assistance do not work hard, or are just not interested in working. Not everyone can find the path you did, I applaud your accomplishments but along the way of your struggles no one reached out and helped you? What we are against is giving more tax cuts to the 1% at the expense of the poor, sick, elderly and children. What we are against is middle class and the poor giving more and the 1% giving less. You are right increasing revenue alone will not the solve the problem. As you well know it takes both, increasing revenue and reducing expenditures. Those cuts should be made and waste and fraud eliminated. We are asking that we all pay our fair share and if you already do than you have no worry.
"Growing up poor" did you benefit at all from ANY government programs? If you say no, you are as bad as Paul Ryan. At the very least you benefited from student loans and grants and whatever college you went to certainly is in existence because of Federal Research grants. I grew up poor and am grateful every single day because of the programs that existed that gave me a hand up out of poverty. And .. it's not MORE TAXES (whine, whine ... I can't buy my 3rd house or 7th car) it's at the level that it should have been if we had let the BUSH era tax cuts disappear as intended. I am sick to death of all thes "poor" people who have no comprehension of how they were helped out of poverty and think they did it on their own with no help from anyone -- go back to reading your Ayn Rand and stay in your fantasy world.
"I pay more in taxes every year than over 60% of the people in the U.S"
I have a hard time feeling sorry for you Jaime. The absolutely moronic notion here is that nobody else works hard or that if us poor people worked harder we'd be millionaires too. I work in Science. I go to the best medical university in the country and I work 80-100 hours a week trying to figure out how to prevent people like you from getting deadly infectious diseases. I pay 2 times as much as Mitt Romney in taxes (as a percentage of my income), and bring in about 1000 times less.
I assume you made all that money by your lonesome Jaimie? You didn't go to public school? You didn't drive on roads or receive mail? Oh I forgot. You built it. Silly me.
Donating to charities has nothing to do with what you pay in income taxes. Donating to charities is nice, but it is a private matter that YOU personally decide to take on your own. Your taxation is an obligation that you own to the society that produces the money and infrastructure necessary so that you can live the lifestyle you want. You also arrogantly assume that people who use government assistance don't work or don't deserve the income. Tell me what is the percentage of those who receive governmental assistance who work? Is it more than the majority or less than? If you do not know the answer or if you had to research the answer before you could reply back to me then that means you just expressed an OPINION as if it were FACT and you based that opinion NOT in what is actually true, but what you believe is true. I cannot, for the life of me, understand this phenomenon. Have all Republicans simply decided to step out of the real world?
A huge percentage of those on govenment "hand-outs" (as you on the right like to call them) are the working poor. More than 50% of the employees of Wal-Mart nationally, qualify for food stamps and other forms of assistance. Most lower level enlisted personel in the armed forces also qualify but are discouraged from accepting assistance due to "military pride" (read: Defense Dept. doesn't want America knowing that military spending does not care for personel, only defense contractors who are extremely wealthy.). Most restaraunt, retail, and non-union manual laborers also qualify and/or receive some form of public assistance, they need to in order to survive.
That said, don't derail this conversation. This is about the lies that Paul Ryan told last night. Focus people.
To kateBaltimore:
Do you make more than 200,000 dollars a year? What's your percentage that you pay in taxes? Do you love how Paul Ryan lies to the public? "You people"?
Your bold and italicized comment is rather interesting. Thanks for that. However, some of us understand how big the breaks millionaires are getting and it simply isn't FAIR.
Paul Ryan was an absolute disaster last night. Fact-checkers are having a field day with this. You got something to say about Paul Ryan? Now's your chance to get back to the topic at hand.
kateBaltimore -
Do you drive on roads that you built? Is your airplane "privately owned" and fly on runways you built? Is your mail delivered by the Post Office? Is your drinking water from the rain? Do you grow your own food and raise your own animals? Do you take medication? Do you go to public parks/zoos?
All of the questions above are things that happen because of "our tax money" - it's called the commons. From the inspection of the food that we eat, the air that we breathe, to the medicines we take, to the services provided! Do you actually believe that these are things that even if "the private sector" did wouldn't cost a fortune for most working Americans? Gvetch, gvetch, gvetch - really I get it, most Americans take for granted a certain amount that they don't understand exactly what "the government" really does do; but let US for one moment return back to this time 4 years ago, with Lehman Bros. going under and everyone worried about what was really happening with the banks - can you see it? Good, then think about that same feeling you had back then and imagine how much worse it will be with a Robme/Ryan presidency!
Well said Kate, was about to post something very similar. Ryan's budget proposes a whopping 10% tax decrease for the top wage earners in America, who are already paying record low taxes, while cutting the "so-called" entitlement programs. Although I agree with Jamie from D to some degree that taxing the rich will not solve the problem, but it has to be part of the solution because without a doubt reducing the tax tables for the wealthiest American's has been a big part of the problem for the past decade. But beyond all else, the thing that is such a white hot lightening rod, is the contemptuous notion that the 99% ers who aren't wealthy are somehow not as hard working. The arrogance and profound lack of humility by a party that claims religion and family as sacred pillars of morality, if not democracy, is absolutely jaw-dropping. Pretty sure Jesus wasn't advocating "social-darwinism" when he said "What you do to the least of my brethren, you do also to me".

Apparently, the republicans know they have the election in the bag with voter suppression laws and voting machine fixes, so they feel they can say anything - just keep up the fear.
As the swarms of nausea kept hitting me, I wondered if there were any wordsmiths that could capture the unadulterated hypocrisy, immorality, and disgusting asswholiness of Paul Ryan's act last night. I know I'm not up to the task.
Every sentence seemed to surpass the last one on the Lie-ometer. Every assertion was found yet deeper in the rabbit hole than the previous one. And maybe the worst of all for me was a mother looking on nearly in tears with pride as her son lied like a mother fu king sonofabiitch to a nation and world. She had to know it was a lie worthy of "1984."
Good god I didn't think I could despise a man more than Ken Starr. I was wrong. When Mitt Romney went to choose a running mate, he looked out over the dickweed forest that is the GOP and one man stood out as a giant among giants: Paul Ryan.
Disgusting. Simply disgusting.
Asswholiness....I like that. Mind if I steal it?
It's all for public use. Hehehe... Take anything I say and use it anywhere you want if you think it helps crush the scourge that is Republicans.
If Ryan's speech was a "Barn Burner", it was set ablaze by his pants.
"working from the assumption that Americans are suckers"
Judging from recent election results, the above assumption IS WORKING!
George H.W. Bush said 'read my lips..no new taxes' Bill Clinton said 'I never had sexual relations with that woman' GW Bush told America that Saadam was hiding WMDs. Political Darwinism. The evolution of a new generation of sleazy, lying bastards.
It really is sad that someone can be so comfortable stating so many lies. Are American people so gullible that they believe all of these false claims. The Republicans stand and say them over and over. It is really beyond comprehension. Also, the news people seem to not want to challenge these claims. Should news media HAVE some responsiblity to report on these issues. It appears they are reluctant to rock the boat on these lies.
American people please wake up!! It is later than you think.
Yes. Say it forcefully and that's all that's needed to get people to believe it.
It seems that you all have forgotten the president who was known for his ability to lie so well - Bill Clinton. George Washington was known as the president who never told a lie, Clinton was known, even by admitted byhis own party ,) who could lie so well. What has Ryan lied about? Please inform us so we will all know. I don't mean his expression of opinions . All politicians (people too) do that. I mean downright lies such as "I didn't have sex with that woman"
So another wingnut hasn't been paying attention:

Well Bonbon, it would seem you need to open wide as Disgustedwithitall gave you an extra helping of facts. Now you can open your eyes, stop being afraid of the dark and try, while using facts, to dispute what answered your question in spades.
Now as for Clinton, the lie about cheating and thus not wanting to embarrass his family was clearly a lie. But who did that hurt? Did anyone lose jobs, health insurance, college funding? nope. Clinton's lie hurt himself.
You had better stick to crying about Obama as there has not been a republican in over a generation that was half as good as Clinton. If it weren't for term limits Clinton might still be president!
So Bonbon you come to an article where the ENTIRE thing is about lies Paul Ryan told and then you look wide eyed and googly that you can't find a lie?
What is with Republicans and paradoxes?! Can you answer that one for me at least Disgusted? ;-)
Republicans are born with a congenital irony deficiency.
My brother and I are the only Democrats in our ENTIRE family. Believe me when I say, the people are buying this stuff hook, line, and sinker.
Paul Ryan is the Poster Child for "do as I say, not as I do."
Ryan's entire speech bothered me, but when he started spouting the line about, " a country is only as strong as it taking care of it's weak," I had to turn the channel!! I almost lost it, my blood pressure was reaching an all time high.
The big huge fact we all know about Ryan and his agenda, is his plans to gut critical programs that help the poorest of the poor.
Ryan, who stands in his Italian leather shoes telling the rest of the country, "pull yourself out of proverty by YOUR own boot-straps," is equal to the line, "the masses are starving, let them eat cake?!"
Ryan, a Washington insider of 20 years has learned the fine art of smooth, BS speak. This is his biggest asset that he brings to the Romney ticket!!
Crying now? Wait for the pepper spray once they get elected.
You know that the left is in full panic mode when their best shot is calling the opponents liars. Love how MSNBC cuts off speakers (like Rand Paul) and lets their talking heads bash the speaker before he is even done speaking. Unbridled bias? MSNBC makes Fox News look like Switzerland in WWII (ie neutral for those of you who didn't study history). Can't wait for the debates. Ryan - Biden? One of these guys will come across like cross between Admiral Stockdale and Chumly (see Tennessee Tuxedo cartoon). And Romney - Obama? One of them will sound like Baghdad Bob (ie - there are no Americans in Baghdad as M1-A1s roll behind him) when he claims "the private sector is doing fine", "we're on the right track", "squeeze the rich (ie the job creators) a little more", etc. Paul Ryan is right; can't wait for the debates. How's that hope and change workin' out for ya?
You seem to be the example of "sucker" that ryan has fooled.
So you believe Paul Ryan then, or do you just support whichever flag, as long as it's flown beneath a Republican crest.
You are an idiot who should change his handle to HypenatedAmerican, like in Idiot-Repuke-Troll-American.
I would refute your Fox Noise talking points, but it is obviously that you have drank the repuke Kool-Aid and, like the RMoney/Ryan ticket, the truth is not relevant.
So are you complaining that Steve is wrong and Ryan was telling the truth on those points, or are you upset that anyone would be so gauche as to discuss public dishonesty?
I'm sorry, I don't speak tinfoil hat, can someone translate that word vomit from Un-American up there for me?
So your argument here is not to dispute anything that Benen has stated, but instead to insist that it's a sign of panic from the left? Has it ever occurred to you that if the left isn't saying it's panicked that perhaps you're the one who is wrong? I mean you do realize how specious your reasoning is here, yes? By this same logic I could argue that you must be panicked since you spent an entire paragraph attacking "the left" while simultaneously not addressing any of the issues brought up by the article. To me that means you are scared because you realize everyone else is on to Republican lies. But of course that would be an unfair assumption on my part, now wouldn't it?
How can we squash this whole "job creator" lie? The facts are that the Bush tax cuts for the rich have been in effect for over a decade. In that decade, we have lost more jobs than have been created. If this "job creator" thing is true, then where the *bleep* are all these supposedly guaranteed jobs that should have been created by the billions (maybe trillions??) in additional debt created by the tax cuts??
They aren't here, and this "job creator" nonsense is just another lie, barely concealed by artful word-smithing. The 1% only want to become the .1%, and that is ALL that is going on. "Let them eat cake!" indeed...
compared to W that hope and change thing is working out great for me and the USA
#unhyphenatedamerican and other trolls:
It's too bad Rupert Murdock won't let people comment on his websites (Fox, MarketWatch). Then misguided righties like you could find comfort in having a lot of lemmings agree with you. Here you get nasty, ugly facts that the right can't handle, so they lie.
finaledit,
You have touched on a very important reason why the US is going down the tubes (among others, true). There is a glaring double standard on the internet. Just about anyone to the left of Atilla the Hun is kept out of right-wing sites. However, on good wittle wibewal sites, those on the right are allowed to spew verbal vomit almost at will. The handicap this creates for decent people ought to be obvious.
"See in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda."
CLICK HERE http://www.prisonplanet.com/audio/260505bushism.mp3 to listen to the Bushism.
It's the REAL GOP platform. Combine that with states in the south wanting to do away with "critical thinking" and it's no wonder that there are such idiots out there who believe the RMoney/RyAyn lies. The GOP pretty much is betting on their "truth" sinking into the uneducated sitting in front of their TV watching sports, nascar and porno.
Americans are suckers. The teapubs are embracing everything we condemn other countries for, especially the lies. And it isn't new.
And there are some people out there who will vote for Romney/Ryan because Ryan's cute. (Frankly I think he's creepy, but there you are.) It happened with Clinton - he showed up playing his sax on SNL, charming everyone and some people voted him in JUST because of that. Not because of issues.
People are idiots, by and large. And those who aren't are disgusted with the whole process and the choices we have for president and just won't bother voting. So the idiots will get out and vote. Happens every hear - why do you think both sides play to their base, especially the right.
I think Ryan looks like Eddie Munster. And that IS creepy.
Yes, the country, while recovering, continues to face belt-tightening challenges. The Republican party (especially Romney/Ryan) seems to think that we Americans can be soothed and lulled by fairy tales.
We are not children who have awakened from a nightmare. We are a country who is living a nightmare caused by too many years of Republican non-leadership.
I was so grateful that Rachel jumped in and reminded Scott Walker that BUSH closed the Wisconsin factory that was referenced before O'Bama even took office. It made my blood run cold to see the Stepford politician look straight into the camera and, with a smug smile, keep repeating the party lie. Over and over.
America, please. It's time to wake up. And time to shake up those around you. I haven't bought into fairy tales for years, especially when they are being read by the monsters in the stories. You?
Even FOX News called out the liar. What's going on here?
http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/08/30/paul-ryans-speech-in-three-words/
Holy Shhhit! That's really IS remarkable. I had to check the URL again to see if it wasn't a spoof.
What IS going on here. Maybe burying in the truth in the opinion section while the "news" goes on its merry lying ways and the stuff people watch on the Fox Idiot Box continues the lies unabated.
Any ideas.
Great article.
I'm Amazed as well!! Looks like Sally may be looking for new employment by this afternoon!
The three words I would have chosen would be "Pants on Fire."
This is interesting from the author of the article:
"Fox News asked me to write the liberal response to Paul Ryan’s GOP convention speech last night. So I did. I described it in three words: Dazzling, Deceiving and Distracting."
http://sallykohn.com/
I think what we're seeing is a feint by Fox to say they really aren't so in the tank for the Wingnut party like I alluded to in my last sentence above. It'll be just a fading blip on the radar easily out-shouted elsewhere in Fox world.
Click on Sally's name, you'll see she's been pretty prolific in her support of the left, she is a Democrat.
That she writing under the Fox logo works as evidence of their Fair and Balanced meme, however, have you seen her make these valid and thoughtful points in person on TV, that intravenous tube of BS flowing straight into American homes, business, and brains?
This is the first I've heard of her, and I'm forced into the company of Fox regularly at the businesses I am required to frequent...lol
Wow! Either Sally is the token liberal at Fox or she will find herself without a job soon.
As much as I despise Faux News - I am not going to bash them for a least printing an opinion that is not within the normal BS that flows from their lying pie holes.
You can get away with lying if you have more credibility than those who would try to correct the lies.
Romney & Ryan are betting that they do, in fact have more credibility with 51% of the voters than does Obama. What's depressing is that they are almost certainly right with regard to about 47% of the voters. They just need those last few percentage points.
And the reason they have more credibility with so may people is, let's be honest here, racism.
That's what makes this campaign season the most depressing one ever. Which is saying a lot.
This URL is totally real...and I encourage all of the Ryan supporters to follow the link and see that even your FOX demi-gods are calling Ryan out for the lies and discrepencies in his speech. For real. Maybe the sky ISN'T falling in! Feeling my blood starting to thaw a bit from last night...
You know the left is in full panic mode when their only play is to call their opponents liars, tweet that they hope the hurricane washes everyone at the Tampa convention out to sea, accuse their opponent of causing a woman's cancer death, etc. Biased coverage? MSNBC makes Fox News look like Switzerland in WWII (ie neutral for those history challenged folks). Love how MSNBC cuts off Rand Paul and lets their talking heads bash the man before he is even done speaking. Fell off my chair laughing when they said Romney doesn't have the military experience to be commander in chief (uh, what army did general Obama lead?). Bring on the debates: Ryan vs Biden? Biden will come across as a cross between Admiral Stockdale and Chumly (see Tennessee Tuxedo cartoon). Romney vs Obama? Can't wait to see Obama attempt to defend his steller record. Ryan's message is right; stop spending money we don't have. BTW, how's that hope and change workin' out? Obama said it himself "I'll be a one term president if I don't get this done". Well, you didn't Mr. President, so step aside.
You know the right is morally and intellectually bankrupt when it's only solution to problems is the ones that caused the problem in the first place, when it descends into anti-science, when it lowers itself into thinking the best ideas were all discovered before the Enlightenment, when it shows up to defend dishonesty in the public sphere and brazen liars, and when it declares anyone pointing out that liars are indeed liars are in panic mode.
Debates? Careful for what you hope for, proud Hyphenated-Evidence-Free-Reality-Denying-Faith-Based-Ideological-Fox-Educated-Wingnut American
It's nice you've learned how to copy/paste. That saves so much time, in print and in thought.
What seriously amazes me. Is anyone. And I do mean ANYONE. who honestly believes that Mitt can't actually win a debate with President Obama. And One actually do what he has done up to this point. And not really say ANYTHING. Sorry Mitt doesn't discuss his policies, because frankly he really doesn't have any. He always says something to the effect of. "We'll have to look and see where we are at. And make a decision of the information we have then." That is not an answer. That's corporate talk for "I have no damn Idea WTF we're going to do."
Mitt sitting up there at a Debate looking like Gordon Geko from Wall Street. Is not going to win anybody over. People still have a bad taste in their mouths about what happened to Wall Street. And He really can't say anything about Bain. Because that's tainted. Can't talk about the Olympics, because that's tainted. MA Gov, yulp tainted too. So if he can't talk about any of that. And has no real policies. What is he going to say to convince more people to vote for him? Because let's face it. Ryan is the better lair between them. Paul proved that last night. Paul lied so much that even a Fox News Reporter wrote an article calling him out on his lies. So yeah bring on the debates. I'm really looking forward to seeing those. Because the debate Moderators have this little thing. Called facts in front of them. So lying which comes easy to them. Will be a little less effective at a debate. Because they'll have someone in person and no national tv calling them one to their face. Just in a nicer way.
Calvin, I hope you're right, but you apparently haven't been involved in discussions where lies can be told bald-faced at such a pace that it is literally impossible to dissect them in real time. If you've ever had a discussion with a climate change denier, you'll know what I'm talking about. Even the scientists don't have time to check the claims of the deniers and respond in a time period that a live "debate" demands, so the denier "appears" to have gotten the upper hand.
Here's what Romney will do: with the assumed conviction of a bank robber on trial saying he didn't do it, he'll look straight at the camera into the faces of 300+ million Americans (if they were all watching) and he will LIE. Did you see that conviction on Ryan's face and mannerisms last night -- in itself, a lie --? That's what Romney will do tonight and what both of them will do in the debates.
Thank you, unhyphenatedamerican, for using your own mind and posting something on this page that is actually truth. I can say the sky is purple and say it's a fact because someone else agrees with me, but that does not make it true. Refusing to give the RNC televised time and cutting in on what is televised with all the ignorant commentary falls right in line with everything else the Democratic left calls "honorable". I hope and pray (dare I say it?) TO GOD that Romney/Ryan are elected and America can be restored back to greatness instead of transformed to dependency and bankruptcy. Take a look at how well government social aid is working globally. Greece, Spain, Germany... money doesn't grow on trees, and just because I have $5 in my pocket doesn't mean I have to give it to you. Like Margaret Thatcher said, "the problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money." No one has anything to say about how much money Barrack and Michelle spend on their holidays and entertainment and why they aren't out feeding the poor, but people think the military budget should be cut to feed the children.
Exactly, Jean from Pgh. We need to bring back those supply-side policies that caused all the mess. We need to destroy the 20th century and get back to the glorious Gilded Age.
How did you get so stupid? Nurture or nature?
Oh Jean you naive little so-and-so...accusing MSNBC for cutting off time for the Repugnants to continue to spew their vitriol is shocking to you? How about a network that typically NEVER is "fair and balanced" and all they do is spout the Repugnant ideal? Bush and his policies and war got us into the mess over 8 years. We have been slowly improving since then and that is because of the President - even without the help of Congress who has blocked every single Job Act or Budget Balance Act that has come in front of them because they have stated from the beginning that they want the President to be one term. They want back in office so that their rich friends can get richer and the middle class and poor can get poorer. Yes, let's look at government social aid and how well it works: Canada! They have a government run health care system and it works great. They also allow same sex marriage and they haven't burned in hell for it. Their economy is flourishing and the only thing that they truly have issues with is the bad air that comes over from USA factories because Bush Jr let his oil, paper and energy buddies take over the EPA and they loosened restrictions and our environment is going to the toilet. You wanna talk about money that the President and First Lady use to spend on holiday? That is their own money. How much do you spend on yours? Why is that even an issue? The President has taken fewer vacation days than any of the more recent presidents, especially Bush W. He was practically out of office more than in and that was to avoid doing any actual work. So you think that the President and First Lady should take all their money and feed the children? Why? They are providing programs which allow children who are poor to get healthy meals and safe places to get medical care and the hope for future education. RR ticket would have them all on the streets begging for scraps. OH, and as the spelling of your name I am assuming that you are female...under RR you can say goodbye to any of your rights as a human - you will be just chattel to be told what to do and how and your health will no longer be in your control. You may as well just turn in your female card with your vote.
unhyphenatedamerican - Thanks for stepping up and telling it like it is. For four years we have heard nothing but lies and false statements from this president but that's okay for Dems to do this. This election the Dems have ran more lies and disgusting ad's than ever before so they must be very worried. Yes, the reps have ran negative ads and lied also but not nearly as much as the dems. I am sick of both parties and we cannot stand another four years of "hope and change". This presidency has added over 5 trillion in debt and we just cannot afford another bailout from Oblamer! This hope and change has turned into a nightmare for most Americans. You cannot blame the republicans for blocking bills that would be devastating to America. The one complaining about the America Jobs Bill, Balance Budget Bill - have you even read the dam bill? You ought to and see how much fat is in these by the dems and how little people would benefit from these bills. You all can complain really well but Oblamer has done nothing but blame everyone else for his failure and it is time for this "hope & change" to pack his bags. BTW, the Dems failed to pass a bunch of bills when Bush was in office. It is the same ole @!$%# no matter who is in office. If Obamacare is so great then why is not congress & the president covered under it? Why does it leave 14 million Americans without insurance? I could go on and on but just really hoping for true change this November!
Oop, another Fox-educated wingnut ignoramus in need of some skoolin' and in particular, a history lesson. Here you go dumba$$:

As for the stagnant economy, that's owned by Boehner/McConnell's and GOPee obstruction. Pay attention:
Boehner's GOTea obstruction => Boehner's GOTea economy and unemployment of 2012.
WHAT HAPPENED:
The economy was on the upswing after the first two years of the Obama Presidency with the rescue of the auto industry, the stimulus package, etc. Then hate, Boehner, and the GOTea happened and there was to be no more consideration of ideas to solve problems because that was considered by the GOTea handing political victories of a political opponent.
GOTea OBSTRUCTION:
What we have is the Boehner/GOTea economy of 2012 which is a scandal and is what the country gets with a GOTea House obstructing every attempt to solve the problems 30+ years of failed conservative ideas and policies have caused. Just like Boehner and McConnell wanted it.
GOTea PUBLIC SECTOR OBSTRUCTION:
Republican obstruction at funding the public sector is costing 0.9 to 1.3 percentage points in employment. This is the opposite of what happened in other recessions in 1981, 1990, and 2000 when the federal government helped local and state government but Republicans in the House obstruct against.
GOTea JOB OBSTRUCTION:
Republican obstruction on President Obama's American Jobs Act (AJA) is a scandal that costs another 1 to 1.3 percentage points.
This whole Republican scandal is too huge to fathom in terms of human misery, but Republicans believe it can fool an irresponsibly inattentive and ignorant public.
GOPers continue sabotaging the economy! - and blaming Obama for unemployment...

Repub bull@!$%# and noone is going to read it.
you seriously didn't think he'd tell the truth, did you?
Oh right, we need to re-elect Obama because we need 4 more years of what we just endured. Obama said it himself: "I'll be a one term president if I don't get this done." Well, you said it sir. Kindly turn in the keys.

Mittens RMoney, turn in the tax returns! We want to know how you (legally?) accumulated $100 Million in your IRA. We want to know how you (legally?) manipulated the laws to provide tax free enormous amounts of $$$ to your sons. We want to know if you took 'advantage' of the 2009 Tax Amnesty to bring your Swiss accounts money back to the U.S. after the Swiss had to turn in the tax cheats with Swiss accounts? We want to know how much tax $$$ you saved by manipulating (legally?) $$$ thru your offshore accounts?
He would have gotten many things done and the recovery would be much further along if it wasnt for you republicans doing anything you could to make sure he failed. Your party's racism will bring this county crashing down.
That actually isn't the quote Obama said so I do not know why you are putting it into quotation marks. What Obama said is that if he cannot get the economy turned around by the end of his first term in office then he will probably not be re-elected. He was not promising he would not run if the economy wasn't better. He was saying that the economy was the most important thing facing voters and the most critical aspect of his re-election. From Obama's perspective he has turned the economy around. It's OK for you to disagree with him, but you must do so honestly. Misstating words his words only serves to denounce your own credibility.
Give it up unhyphenatedtroll! DisgustedWithItAlll has your number and he has Dialed it! To bad no one intelligent is there to answer.
As Stephen Colbert pointed out at a White House Press dinner a while ago. There are too many stenographers and damn few journalists covering politcal events.
Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black. Paul Ryan is a liar. All he tells are a pack of lies. That coming from the TRMS and it's rich history ( on a daily/nightly basis) of telling lie after lie after every conceivable untruth half truth concept imaginable Who lies more than Rachel Maddow? Nobody. All in all at the end of the day TRMS show's major theme for this election cycle as concerns Romney, Ryan or any other republican candidate will be "he/she is a liar." "they are lying". Guess that's the buzz word of the entire election this year as far as TRMS is concerned. Convince the audience that the other side is lying. That instead of presenting a reasonable argument of why your candidate is the better choice.
What a goofball TRMS author lives here. He's a Maddow copy cat. What Maddow says, he repeats. He has nothing of his own. And Maddow? She is just a political hack for the marxicrats with an obvious agenda.
What a sad state of affairs. Better time spent playing Madden 13! What a great video game this year. The infiinity engine makes a world of difference. I am having a blast with it. All day all night. May quit my job and become just another Obama Welfare EBT card carrying socialist/matxist democrat. Maybe then next year I can buy Madden 14 with my Gov't funded (tax payers like will have used to be) EBT card. Then I can sit at home telling lies about how the other side is all about "lying".
How childish of this blog author and Dr Dingdong Maddow herself. That's all you can come up with? A playground kiddie cry baby game of calling repubs liars?
Pathetic.
Its funny Irish has no FACTS that rACHELL mADDOW IS a liar, yet she has numerous facts that Ryan is a liar.
Example being...?
We are sick of Republican talk. There's proof how well the GOP runs this nation, from 4 years ago in fact. They took what Clinton left us, and drove this nation onto her knees in as little as 8 years. We had to watch that, we're still experiencing that, and here comes more (of the same) conservatives saying they'll save the nation This Next Time, We Promise. The only word for them is liar.
So be a cheerleader for Romney/Ryan, because they won't remember you after the election. Obama remembered you, but you bit that hand.
Your loyalty deserves that faux savior Republican government, IrishPat7. Problem is, the rest of us don't.
I guess Irish Pat didn't read Sally Kohn's article over on FoxNews.com. That called Paul Ryan <cough> a LIAR <cough>.
Secondly as a Gamer. If you think Madden13 is an amazing game. You should just stop. And have yourself committed to an institution now. Because your clearly live in a world of delusion.
Hold on. Name one time Rachel has outright lied knowingly. Not a time where she's been mistaken and corrected herself (which she does often, that's human.) I mean name one time she's told an outright, boldface lie.
To your second point, Madden 13 is... bad. The Infinity Engine is a step in the right direction, but it's totally screwed the running game.
Our Senile Diaper Man Pattie? (Paddie? Paddy? Patty?) just needed his diaper changed. Pay him no mind. He has no mind.
Irish you do realize that your sentences are so disjointed and non-sequential as to make it appear like you're suffering from dementia when you post, yes?
What lies has TRMS told? What lies has Maddow told? You make this accusation, but provide no proof? How do I know that this accusation is also not a lie? You do also realize that you're employing a red herring here, yes? You are openly admitting that Ryan lies and that it is bad for Ryan to lie, but are then immediately contradicting yourself by saying it's OK for him to lie since Maddow/TRMS do it to. In doing so you are proving TRMS correct.
Are the statements purported by said individual Republican in fact true statements or false statements? If they are false statements then yes that means the person is lying. If this is the reality of the situation then a journalist points it out. Are you getting angry that Maddow points out lies or that the lies exist? For most of us here we would prefer it if people didn't lie. You appear to want people to lie, but don't want Maddow to point it out???
Wait a minute now you're obfuscating. Maddow does not argue that you should vote for Obama or vote for Romney. Maddow has never stated that Obama was her candidate or that she's even going to vote for Obama. She is a registered Republican, you are aware yes? Maddow may very well vote third party or for Obama, I do not know. The point is neither do you. Her show doesn't take a stance on who should or should not be president. I think what you are confusing here is the fact that Maddow doesn't say the things you have in your mind as to what should be said and therefore you interpret this as bias. So, as an example, you see it as bias that they report on lies given by Republicans. Therefore it must mean they are anti-Republican. It's never occurred to you that they might be anti-lying.
You do realize you are acting like a child in calling other people out as such??? Additionally you also realize that's not how welfare works (sigh). This is a paradox. It's OK for you to be childish and stupid and full of lies because you're a Republican. It's not OK for Maddow to do it because you think she's a Democrat.
Also what Marxist lies has she told and what is her obvious agenda???
Aside from the sheer idiocy of the post in general with as many facts as Ryan's speech, I want to know where these mystical free meal ticket programs are. I've been unable to find real work much more than temp jobs for over 1.5 years. Not able to get help with unemployment (since temp jobs don't qualify), not able to put food on my table (because even at 800/month, that is too much money made to qualify.. forget I am single, have to pay rent, phone, and power). Since I don't have any children, I get none of the other aid. So please tell me where all this money is? Where is this free ride? I'm losing my home and being forced to sell everything and move in with my mother, who is a teacher, making slightly more than the poverty level. So, tell me, please, mister "I don't know what the f socialism really is but like to use it as a buzz word". If you can tear yourself away from your video game.
They can brag that GWB did not lie at the convention. Everyone who spoke played loose with facts.
