The Washington Post looks at Romney's rare tax benefits.
Obama embraces "Obamacare." And Clint Eastwood.
The media strategy for the Democratic National Convention. And where was the Tea Party at the RNC?
Federal authorities drop the case against Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
The U.S. stops training some Afghan forces after a spate of "insider attacks."
A suicide bomber attacks an American vehicle in Pakistan.
Rev. Sun Myung Moon of the Unification Church has died.
In other news, there's a global strategic maple reserve.
Because you demanded it: the White House beer recipe.

No doubt there will be GOTP supporters at the DNC this week. It would be informative to interview some of them to explain Romney's jobs plan..
I ask any one who supports Romney to explain his jobs plan in my daily encounters with the public. Deer in headlights response 100%
There's no explanation because there is no plan. He doesn't stand for anything other than what he thinks will help him. Remember the billionaire who said they only wanted a president who could affix a signature to the hyper-conservative bills they put in front of him? That's what he aspires to be, because that's what they want him to be, instead of a leader. Understanding this explains so much.
I can see you folks are mesmerized by the fantasy of Govt intervention. Romney doesn't have a plan for jobs, they come from business not government. As for business, a pro-business rather than anti-business bias will work wonders.
Shooter,
There is a book out there that you REALLY ought to read:
"The Party is Over, How Republicans went CRAZY, Democrats became USELESS, and the Middle Class got SHAFTED", by Mike Lofgren.
Now before you yawn, Mike Lofgren was an aide for 30 years for John Kasich - yep that same John Kasich who is Governor of Ohio. He had an inside seat at what happened in Congress over the past 30 years.
Believe it or not, he also explains trolls like you and why it is useless to argue with trolls like you!!!
Now shoo!!!
@sofferclese That was no billionaire that was Grover Norquist. In that same speech to CPAC he also intimated that it would be HE that would be telling Congress what bills needed to be passed over the next "20-30 years"
BTW, does anybody else hear that annoying buzzing sound? It sounds like an airball whiffing past the bottom of a net.
Come now once, do you really believe something other than business creates jobs? Even the "jobs" Govt creates are paid for by taxes ultimately derived from business.
Shooter,
Well, it used to be that the voters created jobs for Congressmen and Senators, but any more, I would guess you are right! BIG BUSINESS created jobs for people like Boehner, Cantor, Fox, Bachmann, King, McConnell......
And I for one, want my money back because they are such inferior products who are not doing the job my tax dollars are paying for.
The shooter gop are not even bright enough to realize america has been in charge of our own economy , since we became america
From the U.S. Department of the Treasury website:
Well, I'm glad we're all on board with reporting about the Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve!
Shouldn't the actual headlines read Quebec was holding back it's Maple syrup reserves in an attempt to manipulate the stock market? Hasn't speculation gotten us into enough of a mess? I know it is still happening where oil is concerned, I would just be worried about people getting deathly sick from old maple syrup. Mayabe it's time to plant more trees and tear down some of the cement that is destroying the Earth and keeping us from breathing....How's that?
IHOP? If not them then be on the lookout for a heist of Eggos.
Shawna, I shoulda given you a hat tip. I'm sorry!
damn right there is a strategic maple syrup reserve. and there had better be a strategic bacon reserve to go with it. (sadly, Vermont needs its own strategic reserve since climate change is seriously threatening the maple industry.)
Last election it was manipulation done with actors paid to fake "fainting spells" at campaign rallys and "Obamagirl" videos on youtube, plus a Nobel Peace Prize thrown in for good measure.
This time it's White House beer and pizza recipes dished out in an effort to make you think Obama really is "one of you democratic folks". Please, for the love of God... will somebody tell him we will vote for him. All he has to do is KEEP HIS CAMPAIGN PROMISES instead of dicking us around with bull@!$%# excuses.
White House beer? -At least now we know what he's pissing on us.
I'm hoping the Democratic convention will stay positive. Watching the RNC left me depressed and even more confused because of the hypocrisy. I thought it was shameful for Romney to ignore our troops and then advocate more wars. I guess it's okay as long as his sons don't have to go.
Kinda funny about how the small government folks always want more wars, seeing as how defense spending = bigger government. Every soldier, every General, every Admiral, every contractor, Xe, or Raytheon employee is on the government payroll.
MItt won't reveal his tax returns precisely because he fully complied with the tax code, a code that allows, perhaps even encourages, the wealthiest 1%, or 0.5%, to take advantage of exceptions and loopholes that aren't available to the vast majority.
His returns would highlight, yet again, how far removed he is from that vast majority he wants to lead (or appear to lead).
They might also lead to questions about how and why those exceptions and loopholes got into the tax code in the first place: wealthy special interests bought well placed politicians. Same old same-old ... ... .
Who cares, Romney proved under that is required. Let's talk about the Obama (Co-counsel) Sued Citibank Under Community Reinvestment Act (ACORN) to Force it to Make Bad Loans in 1995. The true architect of the housing meltdown. And you moron liberals blame Bush. Shame, Shame on you Liberals for deceiving the public with your BS. The crap is now floating to the top.
Look Mr. Motormouth I'll be sure to answer your question as soon as I'm able to parse that second sentence of yours. The one that's followed by a sentence fragment. Even though there is no question mark there does seem to be a lack or misunderstanding that you need cleared up.
Didn't get humiliated enough yesterday, huh 392? Back for more???
You are ACTUALLY BLAMING a 1995 lawsuit against Citibank for "redlining" for the failure of the housing market????
What happened to you yesterday must have REALLY affected your brain!!!
Obama's suit certainly helped things along. It forced banks to lend money to people who couldn't pay it back.
oncearepublican-- You phony, you've hiding behing your BS from day one. You can't back nothing, and you won't.
Awww, Shooter,
Can't get a cure for that BS gene you have?
It had NO affect on the housing crisis. The requirements for loans were exactly the same as they were for other borrowers - all it did was stop Citibank from redlining.
392,
Well at least I provide valid links and don't regurgitate extreme right wing propaganda!!!
You DO know that if we want to read that crap, we DO know where to go to get it don't you? And you must understand somewhere in your little brain that we would rather read it from the source instead of having it parroted by you?
Your problem is that you just "parrot", you don't bring any other thoughts with you when you come to this blong - no analysis, no original thinking, no creativity, NOTHING, but regurgitated extreme rightwingnut propaganda!!!
There's more detail below, but the anti-redlining protest (not a lawsuit) was in 1992 and didn't involve Obama.
The lawsuit against the State of Illinois for violating federal voting laws was in 1995 and the lead plaintiffs were the Justice Department, The League of Women Voters and Acorn. Obama was one of Acorn's lawyers. They won.

There's a simple answer for all this. That answer lies in the symbiotic relationship between the US economy and high-wage manufacturing jobs in the USA. When a US worker loses a good paying manufacturing job, it is more often than not replaced by a much lower paying service job. The worker's ability to service payments on his debt and home mortgage is reduced proportionally. Thus when too many of those US manufacturing jobs are outsourced to China by Wall Street investors (either directly or indirectly), a tipping point is reached and home mortgages begin to fall into foreclosure. This drives down the realestate market, and then mortgage-backed securities sold by the banks on Wall Street also begin to fail. This causes a run on Credit Default Swap insurance claims. And since the entire market has gone down, the insurance companies cannot pay out on all the CDS claims.
In short, US MFG jobs go bye, economy go boom.
Conservatives blame workers and home buyers, but the truth is banks and Wall Street caused most of it by outsourcing those MFG jobs for a short-term profit. In effect they were trying to have their cake and eat it too. It's a remarkable example of overpaid morons who shot themselves in the foot en mass.
i watched the DOC about KOCH BROS ON CURRENT last night i had seen it before .I think it should be broadcast in prime time ON ABC CBS NBC .but before they air it they should show the GEORGE CARLIN VIDEO ( THE AMERICAN DREAM)THEY WOULD HAVE TO BLEEP OR EDIT THE LANGUAGE.LOL.
Speaking of TV, have you watched The Newsroom? Not only is it fantastic, it eerily parallels the topics of importance today. (Well, maybe not so eerily... it was only last year.)
Here is a Youtube link that edits the news broadcast portion (leaving out the fictional character stories). Watching it reminds me of shows on MSNBC, but espcecially of TRMS, with it's slow-buildup, connect-the-dots reporting. Watch how the segment starts out on Dorothy Cooper, and ends on her. Like TRMS, it's brilliant.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz-Db4-v6Yg
If you'd rather read the transcript instead of watching the 6 minute video:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/08/27/1124698/--The-Newsroom-airs-the-news-program-we-ve-been-waiting-for
Dorothy Cooper, you may remember, is real, and could not vote because she didn't have valid ID:
http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2012/mar/07/woman-in-photo-id-snag-finally-gets-to-vote/
If only all people who needed ID to vote received that degree of help, right?
The show's reality was dated August 8, 2011. In reality, as a small victory (there's so much injustice to fight still), Dorothy Cooper was able to register to vote this past March.
The "Tea Party has become plain old Republican" thing is very worrying. There's buzz that Cruz has presidential aspirations--aspirations that don't fall into the "keep dreaming, idiot" category. I can't decide whether that idea makes me angry or terrified.
For now try laughing-careful though you don't want to wet yourself.
The Tea Party has ALWAYS been a "plain old Republican" thing because it was engineered by the really wealthy Republicans in the Party to appeal to "the base"!! Don't tell me you believe that the Tea Party was the result of some sort of "ground swell"!!! It wasn't!!
Can someone explain to me how Mitt Romney's father was able to run for Pres when he was not born in this country as Mitt pointed out in his speech last week?
George Romney was born to American parents who were living in Mexico. I don't think the Romneys ever gave up their US citizenship. Sort of like John McCain who was born in Panama to American parents.
Obama (Co-counsel) Sued Citibank Under Community Reinvestment Act (ACORN) to Force it to Make Bad Loans in 1995. The true architect of the housing meltdown. Lets get the truth. Big topic at DNC. Lets not hide it.
392,
How OFTEN are you going to post the same old BS? Do you really think repeating it over and over gives YOU any credibility, (especially after yesterday)? See my answer above.
prove me wrong you.
392
http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/loans.asp
Now where's your VALID link that says Snopes is wrong?? And don't feed me any more of that extreme rightwingnut crap. And THIS TIME, don't copy someone else's work and claim it for yourself like you did yesterday!!!
@392 Hemi You've regained your senses, but you are mistaken. In 1995, The Justice Department, in concert with the League of Women Voters and ACORN, sued the State of Illinois to force them to comply with federal voting laws. Obama was one of the lawyers that ACORN hired. They won. Citibank was not involved.
The Citibank action by ACORN was in 1992. It was at the New York headquarters of Citibank while Obama was in Chicago teaching law. What do you have against anti-redlining laws? Are you for banks charging minorities people higher rates because they are a different hue?
392,
WHY don't you get a CLUE?
There are things that Obama has done that many of us disagree with. Why don't you do research on those issues? Then we could have an actual debate and share ideas.
Instead, you cut an paste really BAD rightwingnut comments that can be EASILY shown to be false, and you try to claim them as your own.
Take a clue from Shooter - yep we all know he is a troll, but he is creative and sometimes funny and believe it or not, we kind of enjoy him ---sometimes!
Let's think just for a moment about the concept of a thread. Dorks like me like to keep thoughts and discussions together in little piles, and when we're talking about Mitt Rmoney's father being born in Mexico, and try to crossbreed that with CRA being the same thing as ACORN, and 1992 is the new 1995, and what happened 20 years ago is all President Obama's fault, the whiplash makes our tiny brains hurt. It's electronic graffiti, if you will, hastily spraypainted on the walls of unrelated buildings and freight cars full of republican-controlled Uteri Gone Wild.
This is your ordinary average "stream of conciousness" thread!
Rachel and I support the Cocktail Party. It won't produce any new jobs but you'll be too buzzed to care.
As to Obama and his people responding to Clint---class may not be popular on the right but it sure seems natural at Obama for President.
Mitt is uber rich it seems. He can say all he want's that he knows how to 'fix America', but the strategies and tactics that he used to become wealthy can in no way be applied to government finances. How can ANYONE reasonably beleive he knows what the H3LL he's doing or planning? He never gives specifics other than to say he'll repeal this or defund that and give us the oh so successful trickle down agenda.
By the way, with a name like Arpaio, has anyone ever seen his long form birth certificate? Or even checked to see if there are any 'illegals' in his family tree?
It amazes me how many of my Republican family members, but mostly friends, are voting for Romney after taking advantage of:
Cash for Klunkers; modifying their mortgage to an all time savings so they wouldn't lose their home; were on unemployment and had their benefits extended time after time even when their own Republican party voted against the extensions and called them lazy for not looking for a job; etc. etc. etc.
But the number one thing on the news right now on FOX and other news programs is:
Are you better off today than you were 4 years ago? Well, OMG... HELL YEA!
This country may have been so much better if the Republicans in the House and the Senate would have just got the hell out of the way and not filibustered in the Senate and voted NO on every friggin bill that came before them that would have made Obama successful. Wait. Let me rephrase that. That would have got America out of this friggin hole!
How stupid can you friggin be???
This Just In:
"Fox news reports Obama attacking free enterprise, plans to force government beer on us!"
Yes, of course. But more importantly, did Obama endorse a national 'draft' over Labor Day weekend ?
And while that is sad enough, what's even worse is if you ask them about President Obama's jobs plan, which has been sitting in the House for a YEAR now, and the GOP (which Controls the House agenda) has REFUSED TO BRING IT UP FOR DISCUSSION, LET ALONE FOR A VOTE, they'll vehemently deny there is such a think. But you can pass along this link for them (not that they'll look at it!) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/12/obama-jobs-plan-american-jobs-act_n_958958.html
There are 30+ jobs related bills sitting on Boehner's desk.
Either I didn't make myself clear, or some posters here can't read, so I'd better put say it again: The Tea Party wing of the Republican party is a bunch of ugly extremists who are dragging what used to be legitimate conservatism towards fascism.
I'm a Democrat. You don't have to be a Republican to know that the Republicans have been hijacked.
Molly, I don't disagree with you, the Republican Party has INDEED been hijacked, but it wasn't by the Tea Party. The Tea Party was CREATED by the people who did the hijacking.
The Tea Party was a creation of the "rich old white men" who hijacked the Republican Party under Reagan to appeal to those who feel "disenfranchised" - it was to turn that segment of the population into rabid Republicans instead of letting them "find" their own alternatives. They were afraid that this segment of the public might form a "third party" that would compete with the Republican Party.
The Tea Party IS NOT what it appears to be - do some research about how it got founded and WHY and HOW its leaders were chosen. They have a "manifest" out there but it is basically a BS story - written to give an "urban legend" to the Tea Party's roots.
Read American Fascists by Chris Hedges. This movement, dominionist, has been a long time in the making.
I am hoping the DNC knocks the ball out of the park. We need the House back or we still have the log jam. I feel safer than I did four years ago, priceless.. Mitt on foreign policy? How a deer looks at you with the headlights on. Ladies esp. in VA, you saw what is possible, frightening to say the least. The GOP platform was written by crazies esp. the unlimited clip size. Why?? This election is the most important one in decades. My only wish is that the Fed Res.head would be replaced, the banks have recovered and are robbing the interest from the middle class retirees. More penalties for fraud are needed and return to Glass Steagall Act. Was this the Clinton compromise with the devil? If you won the lottery who would you trust with the investments? mmm??
If only the wealthy have power the rest of us will be like Oliver asking more please sir....
I have spent my work life taking care of the needs of the mega wealthy.I am glad for people who have success still I want to convey the wealthy live in a bubble and only like people get in.They have way more than money they have Power.
Yea for Paul Krugman on Friday evenings program and his limited but distinctly Krugmanish explanation of the big GOP lie as to alleged Medicare coverage reductions due to the Affordable Care Act. . I also tend to think of Krugman's appearance as a sort of compact hairy Clooney, haha. Gobama!
Abraham Lincoln, the founder of the GOP, in perhaps one of the greatest speeches in history, the Gettysburg Address said, "...that this Nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom--and that Government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth. This is how Honest Abe, the greatest GOPer of them all, defines Government, anything that involves the interests of the People. Therefore, Government intervention at its worst, is still good thing, it's the American people helping out eachother. That's why Abe was called Honest, Ryan and Romney should try to emulate him, and stop their damn lying!! Now repeat after me, "the US Government is good, the US Government is a friend to the people, the US Government is the American people looking for eachother!"
I wish the President would say that Democracy is a continuing struggle, perfection is a child's dream, you pick your team, and you fight for what is best. Democracy is a perfect study in imperfection, and neurotic, perfectionist, potentate, catbird pundits are working for corporate America. Obama job approval is at about 47%. His personal likeability scores at around 65 to 70%. American political media's approval rating is 10%. The corporate pontificating folks who continually nitpick and hyperbolate and pontificate and hystericize and exagerrate and blabber on the airwaves about Obama ...are less popular than Congress. Gobama!
My husband thinks that Eastwood was supposed to do a skit with the impersonator Kevin Michel (FauxObama) and Michel didn't show. I'm not so sure; it was all bizarre. Here's a link about Michel and his mention of wanting people to watch him at the RNC: http://www.mediaite.com/online/does-donald-trumps-big-surprise-for-the-rnc-involve-an-obama-impersonator-pic/
This country may have been so much better if the Republicans in the House and the Senate would have just got the hell out of the way and not filibustered in the Senate and voted NO on every friggin bill that came before them that would have made Obama successful. Wait. Let me rephrase that. That would have got America out of this friggin hole!
I just had to quote that because nobody seems to be mentioning THAT in any speeches or on any Sunday morning talk shows. Nobody's really mentioning MUCH that the President has accomplished, but most especially they don't mention that he has been completely hamstrung by the Republicans in Congress. I don't think any of the "23,000,000" unemployed are aware that President Obama had all SORTS of ideas for jobs, but since Boehner and his buddies decided that it was their mission to keep him from DOING anything, it's all been frozen in place.
If nothing else, the Democrats at this convention need to DEFEND themselves; point out what they HAVE accomplished and accuse the Republicans of causing the unemployment problems by their idiocy.
Corporate political/news media is reliably and predictably corporate.
Looking forward to the show tonight! I found an old tape of a 2010 post-election show that got me through Sunday (where Rachel reports on being a vampire, Sarah what's-her-face's yawning bear ad, and Tank Jones wonders if the Tea Party will be around in five years).
Odd though, that it could have been aired today - lots of discussion about the echo chamber documenting each other's rumors by saying "I heard today that..." and "I read on the internet that...".
