No, Paul Ryan didn't really join the raid on bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad.
Paul Ryan's credibility took a hit last week with his deeply mendacious convention speech, which even drew rebukes from the right. It got worse over the weekend, with revelations Ryan doesn't even tell the truth about his athletic exploits.
The threat for the Republican vice presidential hopeful isn't just that the media will start to notice his dishonesty, but also that he'll become the subject of mockery. Andy Borowitz had this satirical gem today.
In a dramatic narrative that could upstage this week's Democratic National Convention, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) gave reporters today a detailed account of the fateful day he killed Osama bin Laden.
Mr. Ryan said that he was revealing his role as the triggerman who felled the al-Qaeda leader to "set the record straight," explaining that he had remained silent about his mission until now, because "I don't like to brag."
The Republican Vice-Presidential nominee painted a portrait of a Paul Ryan few know, a man who trained for missions with SEAL Team Six while somehow finding time to cut key provisions of Medicare. [...]
"Osama got one look at me and he ran like a bat out of hell," he said. "It's times like that that I'm glad I can run a hundred meters in 9.58 seconds."
It goes on from there, and it's extremely funny, but the larger point is the significance of Borowitz's piece itself -- Ryan is quickly developing a reputation, at least among some, that dramatically contradicts everything the media generally likes to say about the guy.
For years, the political establishment has been fully invested in telling the public that Ryan is a bold and honest man in a den of craven cowards. He's to be celebrated for telling hard truths, we've been told, that few have the courage to tell. It's always been nonsense for anyone who cares to check, but it's the myth and the Beltway loves it.
Except now the myth is failing at an inopportune time. Ryan was mocked on "The Daily Show" for dishonesty; he's being mocked by Borowitz for the same thing; and on one of the Sunday shows, former Bush adviser Matthew Dowd conceded in reference to Ryan, "At some point the truth should matter." Ouch.

Paul Ryan never let the truth interfere with a good story. He is a sorry excuse of a "serious and bold" politician.
Well let's see...
Has anyone vetted Obama's lies? No? Gee what a surprise.
Like Ryan I ran a marathon when I was younger and faster that I am now. Also, like Ryan I only ran one marathon.
Again just like Ryan I will always remember finishing that 26.1 miles (that last .1 was the hardest) and I will always remember my finish time, 3 hours and 56 minutes. I ran the second half of the race faster than the first, pretty good for a rookie.
Where we differ is in that I never felt the need to lie about my finish time. That time was something I take pride in and I always will.
Shooter,
We are talking about purposeful factually untrue statements, not political spin here. For me the real point is his character. He didn't have to lie about this issue. It was not important to anyone but a few runners who take pride in what they have done.
He is evidently so used to lying that it is casual and easy. He is not Presidential material.
You can misdirect and mislead all you want but he lied just to lie.
Pat P...,
The Blank has a long history of doing the same thing.
Shooter: This is what Ryan Said: “I remember President Obama visiting it when he was first running, saying he’ll keep that plant open,” Ryan said in Ohio Thursday, describing the shuttered GM factory in Janesville, Wis. “One more broken promise.”
Simpson-Bowles Commission: Ryan voted against the commission’s proposal. To have the proposal sent to Congress for a vote, 14 out of 18 members had to vote yes. That didn’t happen, because in the end, only 11 members supported it.
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2012/aug/30/ryan-and-simpson-bowles-commission-full-story/
What Ryan Said, “A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that GM plant. Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said: “I believe that if our government is there to support you … this plant will be here for another hundred years.” That’s what he said in 2008. Well, as it turned out, that plant didn’t last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that’s how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight.”
The Truth: The GM plant closure was announced in June of 2008, when George W. Bush was president. Barack Obama took office in January 2009
Ryan accused Obama of doing “exactly nothing” about recommendations from a bipartisan presidential commission to reduce the deficit. But Ryan himself was among a minority of commission members whose opposition scuttled the plan and prevented it from being sent automatically to Congress for action.
And Ryan came clean about his running time, but not his lies about medicare, about Obama closing that GM plant, that he is the one to blame about Obama "doing nothing" about the bi partisan presidential commission.
And Obama has been fact checked. Over and over again.
It is you who is long on lies and short on facts, blanks.
Oh please, Ryan got one thing wrong and admitted he got it wrong. How about Obama's insistence that even though he went to Rev Wright's church for twenty years he never listened to what he was saying?
Let me ask you shooter when you were a kid, teenager and young adult did you sit an listen to the sermons at church? Did you not get bored and start day dreaming or think about things you were going to do once you got out of church?
Shooter the same can be said about Paul Ryan. Who has read every Ayn Rand book. Went to conventions held in her honor. And even spoken at a few. Never knew up until what April of this year. That she was a capitalistic atheist. Really?
Ryan lied about the plant. He lied about the run time. (Because as a former track athlete. The one thing you never do. Is confuse your run time with someone elses. Because runners are completely obsessive about our times.) He sky rocketed to Political infamy. As the "kill Medicare guy", now the Romney/Ryan ticket are the ones preserving it? Really. When exactly did The GOP endorse such socialist programs with open arms and passion? Oh wait they didn't. Because they are LYING!
Lorr, Ryan said that in Ohio, the topic today is the convention in Tampa. Parsing? Yeah, but that tells me someone corrected him and he didn't say it again. As for Simpson Bowles, did Obama do anything at all with their findings? No.
On the other hand Obama said “I will not sign a plan that adds one dime to our deficits — either now or in the future.” in front of Congress. We can play who lied about what, but I suggest that it's a losing gambit for the left.
umm actually Shooter. Ryan told the Plant lie at the Convention in Tampa on Wed night. In case you weren't watching. Or have been living inside of s bubble for the last week. He was wearing a blue tie and nodded his head. As he told the lie. Went some where a long the lines of....
"Then Candidate Obama. Stood out side the plant in Janesville. And told the crowd. If your government is here for you. This plant will be around for another 100 years. Less than a year and a half later. That plant was closed. One more broken promise."
I don't think that's an exact quote. Did the best I could from memory. But I think you get the idea.
Bull@!$%#, blanks.
You are busted, once again for your ignorant posts and then you add more debunked right wing talking points to your incoherent "argument" while doubling down on your all ready debunked talking points.
You show everyone here just how much of a right wing loon that you are.
The Blank never lets objective reality stand in the way of his favorite lies.
...then this wouldn't be evidence of an Obama lie, this would be evidence of a media lie. Why are you then assigning blame to Obama for something the media did? I swear Shooter your blatant contradictions just astound me. How can a person say something and have that be directly contradicted a couple of seconds later? It makes NO sense.
You mean his debt commission? What are you talking about? The Simpson-Bowells Commission never made it out of committee and Paul Ryan was a large part of that. How can you call that a. a lie and b. Obama's fault? A lie is when you claim X to be true when in fact something else (such as the opposite of X) is true. Obama ignoring his own commission, even if this argument made any sense, would not be evidence of a lie- it would be evidence of, at the very most, a promise broken. The two aren't the same
What does this have to do with Obama???? Your conclusion doesn't match or indeed have anything to do with your premise. This is completely illogical.
Except Obama never promised to keep the plant open. He argued in 2008 that if effective governmental intervention were taken then manufacturing plants like the one in Janesville would have a shot. The decision to close that plant down was made long before Obama took office and based on things that Obama could not have effected. Even if we wanted to say this was a promise broken you'd then be patting yourself on the back for believing in a promise that had zero possibility of happening. In which case you're correctly getting mad at Obama, but ignoring your own stupidity in the process.
But this is an assumption that you are making, Shooter. You asserted as a fact that no one fact checks Obama. Aside from the fact that people do fact check Obama (I think you're just getting confused here because he doesn't lie as frequently) you're not saying that the media should fact check Obama not on the basis of what is empirically provable, but rather what could hypothetically be provable. Again you confuse hypotheticals, belief, and fantasy with reality. What is it with you and this phenomenon? What is so scary about the real world or so biased about the real world that you have to ignore it in favor of complete fantasy?
...he proposed a budget that was almost entirely based on their recommendations. You've mentioned this budget many, many times. Here's another instance of IOKIYAR hypocrisy. When you mention the budget to attack Obama then a. it exists and b. is fair game. When you want to attack Obama for not having listened to the debt commission then suddenly the budget no longer becomes relevant. But what's even more if it wasn't voted out of committee what do you expect? As president Obama can't do anything on budgetary issues without the direct co-operation of congress. You're blaming him for something that he doesn't have control over. But beyond that you are the one who asserted that he lied. Where is the lie here?
@Shooter...OK, try to keep up...GM closed the plant because it was making an obsolete vehicle. Paul Ryan KNEW that because he wrote the BUSH ADMINISTRATION asking them to keep it open. He also knew it because when the Obama administration came into office he wrote them again, and Steven Rattner, the Auto Czar said he told Paul Ryan then that this was entirely a GM decision...so no matter how you defend your liar, he is still a liar....sorry dude...delusion is what it is...
Calvin, Ryan rephrased his Janesville plant remark to leave out direct blame on Obama. Yes he talked about Janesville, no he didn't say Obama broke a direct promise.
With the way the teapubs are re-writing history, I fully expect to see this tale in the American textbooks at a school near me soon.
Don't be surprised if it is already in his Wikipedia biography.
As a parent and now a grandparent, we taught our children and they teach their children that lying is WRONG. Paul Ryan has young children, I believe the oldest is 10, what message is he sending them? Perhaps Ryan who professes to be a "Good Catholic" should remember the 9th Commandment, "Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness Against Thy Neighbor." Perhaps his children could remind him of that .
"what message is he sending them?"
The "message" that all those on the right live by: Win if you can, lose if you must, but always cheat!
Lorr ... The point you've made can't be overstated. Romney has shown himself to be a poor role model. It would be impossible for those of us who educate kids to respect him or to point to him as someone young people should admire. His election would diminish the presidency on day one.
Is the wikipedia page locked yet?
This is off subject but I am a little taken aback. I always thought that Labor Day Celebrates the the American Worker and their hard work and success, however, it appears the Republicans have a different idea. Eric Cantor tweeted today:
Just a little blatant and obvious, but should anyone be surprised when a repuke (Cantor) acknowledges that the only success is wealth and ownership and that actually working for a living is not what Labor Day is about?
Well guys, labor is a bunch of people standing around with nothing to do - until someone with an idea and the money to pursue it - arrives needing help.
In short, no business no jobs. Without wealth and ownership, labor would be hunting and gathering.
So according to Cantor and Shooter, we should rename it Management Day?
Lorr,
Melissa Harris Perry had the absolute best response for Cantor and all those who fawn over the wealthy risk takers..
She lost her cool but it was very cool:
http://egbertowillies.com/2012/09/02/explosive-outburst-by-melissa-harris-perry-clear-example-why-economic-ethnic-diversity-in-media-important/
Theodore Roosevelt said, "All wealth begins with Labor."
And Shooter, you are a f**king IDIOT!
No demand, no jobs.
Pauly...,
It's much worse...he is aggressively malicious.
Well folks, when the trolls get to be a pain simply banish them to the dungeon with the ignore button.
I don't want or expect everyone to agree with me but I do want some degree of intelligence in the conversation.
Shooter evidentially doesn't believe in recessions.....
People, my summary can be seen in action every day where day labor congregates hoping to pick up a job.
Pauley seems to think that group left to it's own devices will build a house out of nothing. And bagel doesn't get that without jobs there's no way to pay for "demand".
Economics isn't rocket science. It's just the observation of what people do with a dollar in different circumstances. It's not much different than family finance.
The rich have sucked all the money out of our economy. In the last 30 years the wealth of the very top doubled. They now suck twice the amount that they did then.
So now we have low demand. The rich have sold the idea of trickle down and it is a lie. It doesn't trickle down. It merely buys bigger yachts for the gluttons who never get enough.
The rich are bettered viewed as parasites who attach themselves to a host for their own gain. When they become too successful they ultimately kill the host.
Vultures are parasites and so are the rich. Vultures do provide a service to the environment and so do the rich, but they don't belong at the top of the food chain.
MittVultures prey on the weak and there is a certain long term value in that, but we should not set the stage to kill off all themiddle classanimals for the sake of vultures. Those blood-sucking parasites seem incapable of recognizing what happens to their kind unless they are checked. The French Revolution and the Russian Revolution show what will happen, and it ain't pretty.
It's ironic that people seem to forget that FDR was elected fifteen years after the Russian Revolution. That bloody takeover was fresh in everyone's minds, included his. Communism was becoming increasingly popular in this country as an apparent solution to our vast wealth inequality.
"Socialist" FDR recognized the threat of Communism and set out to save the country for capitalism by creating a more egalitarian society. He succeeded, yet Republicans still spit on his memory. Of course, if he were alive today, he would still "welcome their hatred."
Omg..... I cannot wait for SNL!!!!
(does anyone else see a Paul Ryan / Topher Grace resemblance..? Boyish grins and such?)
It's sad that Romney can't even get respect from his own running mate. Mitt Romney has worked for decades to establish himself as the most shameless liar in American politics, his grand, Whitmanesque (except not gay) mendacity earning him a regular spot on the Maddow Blog -- and along comes Ryan at 9 miles a minute to steal Romney's defining character trait for himself.
47 seconds that will "Live in Infamy"- until Ryan trumps it!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sh163n1lJ4M
Lyin' Ryan and team demonstrated (recall Ryan was at that private meeting the night of Obama's inauguration with other senators and congressmen along with Gingrich and Frank Luntz all vowing to obstruct everything Dems would do to make Obama a 1 term president...treason) their willingness to sell out the American people's welfare just to gain power in 2012. The GOP has shown they don't believe in democracy but in a totalitarian government with one party permanently in control...republicans...at least their version of 'republicans'. So hypocrisy and lying just flows from their lips because the people they are part of, that they represent are the 1% who just don't give a damn about the rest of humanity. They represent a violation of all we stand for as a country when they only care about gaining power by any means available. They are willing to drag down an economy, deny healthcare and even start a war to gain power. These sociopathic republican extremists only believe in the 'power principle'.
The truly scary part is that thanks to our dysfunctional media, this group has any momentum at all for they mark the end of our great democracy and the move into a totalitarian oligarchy or corporatocracy.
The only form of government that both ensures are freedom AND survival is Democratic Socialism...where we all join in protecting and ensuring the 'necessities' of life while maintaining the freedom to decide how we do this and the freedom to choose our individual lifestyles.
they should really be tried for treason!
The people who claim the media can't make a big fuss about lying, or that people don't care are the same ones who manged to endlessly mock Gore "inventing the Internet," Love Canal, etc. The only difference being, in those cases, Gore wasn't lying.
When the Romney camp dares the media to call them on their mendacity, we should judge how the media responds by the Gore standard.
The Gore internet myth has been debunked by snopes.com. Here's the quote from Gore:
"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."
Snopes continues:
If President Eisenhower had said in the mid-1960s that he, while president, "created" the Interstate Highway System, we would not have seen dozens and dozens of editorials lampooning him for claiming he "invented" the concept of highways or implying that he personally went out and dug ditches across the country to help build the roadway.
George
What Gore did was the typical political spin. He wasn't telling a blatant lie, he was just presenting a fact in the best possible light.
What Ryan did showed a lack of fundamental character. He lied just because he thought he could get away with it.
As a one time marathoner I can tell you anyone one who completes one will never forget exactly what their finish time was.
Ryan is a liar. He lies for no reason. It is just natural for him at this point.
So, the the idea that Paul Ryan is fundamentally dishonest is catching on. When's Mitt Romney's turn?
Mendacious Mitt and Paul Lyin'.
Can you imagine the heights of sarcasm/mockery that President Obama, Mr. Clinton and the other speakers at the Democratic Convention will be able to ascend if they want to? And something tells me they really, really, want to! Almost makes me feel sorry for R/R.
Not really...
When Paul Ryan was just 11, he shot down a Libyan Su-22 over the Gulf of Sidra in his F-14 Tomcat.
Two years after that, he personally killed 12 Cuban soldiers on Grenada, with a demo knife.
He's the reason the Soviets left Afghanistan.
He almost took out Noriega in 1989, but decided it was "too easy".
During Operation Desert Storm, he punched out an Iraqi T-72 tank.
He killed Farrah Aidid and fifty members of his clan in Somalia, with a demo knife.
He's the inspiration for the GI Joe character Snake Eyes.
The guy is just on a whole different level of awesomeness.
Chuckie N. is going to get pissed..
There is no doubt about it in any way that America is better off today then it was four years ago. The banking industry is better off. The housing industry is better off. Wall Street is better off. The economic foundation of America is now much more solid than it was for years ago. There is not a lost of 600,000 to 700,000 jobs a month as there was four years ago. We are now adding jobs every month instead of losing jobs every month as we were for years ago. America is no longer on the brink of a Depression as it was four years ago. We are now on the path to financial recovery unlike where we were for years ago. I know it is a recovery that is taking time but when an economy loses 9 million jobs as it did 4 to 6 years ago it will take time to fully recover because it’s consumers that create jobs by buying things and someone with a job is a consumer. It’s easier to get a job today than it was four years ago. The job market would be even better if it wasn’t for the Republicans in Congress who are not funding any kind of hiring of new government employees or government projects since two years ago when they took control of the House of Representatives. Also the Republicans in the private sector are also doing their best to increase the unemployment figures. You see, most of the big companies in America are owned or operated by the rich. Most of the rich are Republicans. Most of the large companies are making record profits yet most of the companies are cutting their work force to the bone and cutting salaries, benefits and investments in the company. Then many companies say they won’t hire because of Obamacare. That is a lie! Most companies already have enough money in the bank to cover Obamacare and most large companies already have health insurance so Obamacare wouldn’t affect them much. Also Obamacare doesn’t fully go into effect until 2014 and if they don’t have the money in the bank to cover it then they can always borrow the money. So you see since President Obama became president the Republican politicians and the Republicans in the private sector are purposely messing up the economy so to increase the unemployment rate because they know that a high unemployment rate is the only way to win the election. Are you going to reward the Republicans for messing up America’s economy by voting for them?!!! Besides the ONLY economic plan Romney and the Republicans have is to permanently extend the Bush tax cuts for the rich as well as cut other taxes for the rich. Romney and the republicans lie as they say that the rich need money to create jobs when the rich already have enough money to buy or already own most of the things that create jobs like cars, houses, clothes, furniture, household goods or services. The economy is like a piece of pie, the more people who can buy a piece of the pie the bigger the pie you will need. The rich get richer by selling more pieces of the pie, not by trying to get as much as the pie for themselves. The rich get richer by people buying the things that they sell. Then Romney and the Republicans want to unnecessarily increase the military budget, cut or gut as many regulations and environmental laws as possible and make abortions illegal. Doing all of this will increase the deficit which will make Romney and the Republicans cut the budget more than they intend on doing with the Ryan budget plan. This means that ALL the programs and benefits affecting the middle class and the poor as well as ALL the CURRENT RETIRES will be on the Republican chopping block. You see folks, the Republicans are sick and tired of paying taxes and they are sick and tired helping the poor and needy so the Republicans are going to give themselves a bunch of tax breaks and the rest of us are on our own! Don’t listen to the Republicans lies and the lies of the Republican media outlets like FOX News and MSNBC Mourning Joe whose biased one sided narrow minded untrue analyze are wrong. Read www.mybetteramericaplan.com for more information. Also get as many people you can in any way that you can to read an article you can find on your computer by doing a Google search for 'Greed and Debt, The True Story Of Mitt Romney And Bain Capital
Yea sure thing, lets see how obama rates when the banking system crashes next month. Thats like telling me it was Bushes fault on the housing foreclosers. NOT
If the banking system crashes next month, almost all of the blame will belong to the bloodsucking parasites among the 1% and their useful idiots among the 99%.
392 - So banks lobby for thirty years to combine retail and investment banking. The Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act passed the Republican controlled 106th Congress with a veto-proof majority. Now banks make loans, then they sell them as investments. Where's their risk? They just sold it! "Hey, now I can loan to anyone, and I don't care if they pay it back or not! Sweet!"
Whose "failed economic policies?"
Sorry, all, but Ryan really didn't shoot Osama bin Laden--I did. I know it's far fetched, but I ran all the way to Pakistan (from Southern California), in record time, just to get the job done. Well, actually, I didn't run across the oceans, I rode on the back of my pet dinosaur who knows how to swim long distance--I have a special waterproof saddle just for that. I know it's all true because I made it up myself.
Obama backed off 3 times on Bin Laden. Hillary had to take him by the hand and convince him that it was OK. WOW
@392 hemi -- Psst! -- I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you - interested? It's right up your alley, you can't go wrong wit' this, I'm tellin' ya!
June PSSSSST I know, It's called entitlement, Because you think like a SLOTH. Your just to slow to figure it out!!!!!!!!!!!t WOW
Wow hemi, are you a professional douche or do you dabble part-time? You're awfully good at it!
You're just like a "hemi"/hemorrhoid!
Trollop,
You can find him/her/it in the "Feminine Hygiene" section, but the package has a dire warning label.
