What kind of record has Obama put together since this night four years ago?
The more Republicans talk about President Obama lacking a record of accomplishments, the more disjointed the GOP's line of attack becomes.
Just across the state from where the Democratic National Convention is set to begin tomorrow, Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan warned North Carolinians not to believe what President Obama says in Charlotte.
"Let me quote President Obama four years ago: 'If you don't have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from.' Ladies and gentleman, that is exactly what Barack Obama is doing today. You see, the president has no record to run on," Ryan said here on the campus of East Carolina University.
Often, the Republican line takes the opposite tack -- Obama has done too much, approving too many policies that are too progressive. Ryan is now saying, in effect, "Never mind all of those accomplishments we condemned, the new line is the accomplishments don't exist."
People can and should argue about whether Obama's successes have been worthwhile, whether they were ambitious enough, and whether they were effective, but whether one approves of the president or not, the fact remains the successes are real.
This is a president who passed a health-care reform breakthrough 100 years in the making. He also imposed the most sweeping Wall Street reforms since the Great Depression. Obama also rescued the economy from collapse, rescued the American auto industry, ended the war in Iraq, decimated al Qaeda and killed bin Laden, reformed the student loan system, ended "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," vastly improved fuel efficiency standards, helped topple the Gaddafi regime, negotiated the New START treaty, improved food safety protections, cracked down on credit card company abuses, expanded stem-cell research, and signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
Republicans disapprove of these measures, as is their right. But to say the president "has no record to run on" is kind of silly, even by Paul Ryan standards.

Isn't the deficit worse than what he adopted from bush?
no

Check out what a real speech against the GOP is supposed to look like! Go Andy!
Someone like Rachel should do a montage of speeches by Dems running for Congress and Senate so we can be introduced to them and the seats we can win if we just show up to vote!
Citation needed. And no, I'm not a neocon or a republican.
Obama didn't capture and kill Bin Laden, SEAL Team Six did. And no, George Bush doesn't get the credit for that either. Obama just happened to be in office when the expert work of the men who have been counter-terrorism experts for DECADES finally came to fruition. Obama gave the green light. He did NOT do the work, lead the team, study the intel or make any of the command decisions in the right places at the right times that directly led to the takedown. He gave his blessing per the Rules of Engagement.
There are a few thousand OWS protesters who beg to differ about those "sweeping Wall St. reforms." You wanna ask THEM how pleased they are with the "new" system and the consequences therein for corrupt bankers and profiteers? You want citation? Read Mike Taibi's blog and articles about Bank of America.
And that "health-care reform breakthrough 100 years in the making?" That's no more than an insurance-lobbyist penned piece of nonsense, requiring us to ENSURE those very same corrupt health insurance corporations who got us into this mess in the first place are GUARANTEED business forever. There is NOTHING in there which requires THEM to hold down costs, approve all necessary treatments or not mismanage funds and in a few short years, leave us with a huge bill to pay again as they go bankrupt and need to be bailed out because they've become "too big to fail" so all the hospitals don't fold and go under from all the reimbursements they won't receive.
This president has done little or nothing. He has let down everyone who believed in him...everyone who took to the streets in tearful, victorious celebration and hope after he won. He enacted NDAA. He has consistently proven zero respect for Liberty, Privacy/Search & Siezure protections and Human Rights and until very recently, he refused to even go on RECORD ins support of same-gender family equality. In fact, the ONLY thing this president has going for him over the other candidate is that at LEAST he's not forcing Christianity down our throats.
Somewhere along the way, The People were convinced that fair "compromise" meant including the will of greedy corporations and even the supposed representative-government *itself* at the negotiations table. THEY don't get a say. What's "fair" to them is irrelevant. They are here to serve us, We, The People. And any--ANY entity that rises up and usurps the power and free-and-recognized will of The People MUST be disbanded.
You want to fix healthcare? Want to fix wall street? Want to fix this sense of powerlessness we have? Consumer issues, overcrowded prisons, crime, poverty, waste? Then fix the public education system, my friends. That's the only key out of the shackles, my friends.
My $0.02.
Barack Obama made a several missteps in his first 18 months or so in office and I believe has learned from them. First, he believed Republicans would work with him due to his pledge to do the same with them and adopting several of their own ideas. WRONG! Republicans quickly decided that they would simply block EVERYTHING Obama tried to accomplish, even if that meant making the recession worse so they could try and win the White House back this year. Did Obama suspect such evil? No. Now, he seems wiser. He put too much weight behind Health Care reform and LET Republicans label it "Obamacare". It was not the first time Obama tried to remain "above it all" and did not properly communicate or defend his positions, allowing Republicans to label and communicate on his behalf and to his peril. I was so frustrated when he would sit silent while Republicans gave the public THEIR version of his plans (ie: death panels!). My hope is Romney trips up, fails to win and a wiser Obama goes right after the GOP in a second term in a way that shoves that party so far back it may be 2030 before they get the White House back.
So much of this post is BS, and quite frankly I find that surprising given Maddow's reputation for honest reporting. How did Obama help our economic recovery by bailing out major corporations and thereby propping up the same broken system that is causing all of us hardship to begin with? How is it healthcare reform to force Americans to buy insurance? I have consistently found the healthcare plans offered by my employers to be extremely unaffordable, and this was before so called healthcare reform. Now instead of fighting for universal healthcare just like most other western nations enjoy, Obama is yet again giving a handout to the medical/insurance industry complex. You claim Obama ended the war in Iraq, which is only true if you measure the situation in the most cold and calculated way possible. We simply removed our troops, after spending nine years decimating the country. Iraq today is a disaster, both in terms of infrastructure and government. Sectarian violence still takes place daily; in almost every way the country is worse off now then before we invaded. To top it all off, perhaps the most egregious falsity in your statement is the claim that he has somehow decimated Al-Qaeda and done a good job with the war on terror. The reality is that Obama, much like Bush before him, has used terrorism as a pretext for the wholesale destruction of American civil liberties: TrapWire, the war on drugs (and lying to the public about his Medical Cannabis policies), warrant-less spying (both domestic and otherwise), extrajudicial kidnapping, torture and assassination. How about Homeland Securities involvement in coordinating a militarized crackdown on Occupy encampments across the United States? What about what the Obama administration has done to Julian Assange/WikiLeaks, actions that strongly suggest the government has horrific crimes to hide. Of course, the most current and obvious example of Obama believing himself to be above the law is his administrations indefinite imprisonment and torture of Bradley Manning since May 2010 without charge. These issues are but the tip of the iceberg in describing Obama's crimes while in office, many of which rival the horrors we experienced under Bush. Why does the Rachel Maddow show continually ignore these deeply important issues? I'm saddened to see a woman who could be a beacon for truth and honest debate in political reporting instead slowly but surely transform into a Democratic Party propaganda mouthpiece.
Wow..so many excellent posts here beginning with Kaneblues! It is incredibly refreshing to read intelligent, accurate and positive thoughts regarding what President Obama has truly accomplished! Eagerly anticipating his speech on Thursday evening as well as Mrs. Obama tonight. I also think the debates are going to be amazing...can't wait to see how the Republican candidates try to defend their statements (lies) on ALL of the issues against the likes of Barack Obama and Joe Biden!!!
Below is a list of what has happened over the 44 months or so. I'm not sure that every point is 100% correct, but everything does appear to be generally accurate. No out and out lies.
- Monthly job growth increased from >800,000 jobs lost to almost 200,000 jobs gained (that's a change of nearly 1 million per month)
- GDP increased from 9% contraction to 2% growth (that's a change of about 11%)
- Federal spending reduced by $200 billion from FY2009 to FY2012 - Deficit reduced from $1.4 trillion to $1.1 trillion (10% of GDP to 7% of GDP)
- Stock indices (Dow, S&P, Nasdaq) up about 100% since the stimulus was signed
- Corporate profits at record levels; small business revenues quadrupled since January 2009
- Manufacturing (Industrial Production Index) up 17% since early 2009, increasing every year since 2009
- National median home price increased from $175,500 to $185,000 (up 5.4%)

The Republicans, Democrats, and the liberal media can try to spin things however they choose, but the fact remains. Americans know without lying politicians and reporters trying to manipulate and sway their opinion what is really going on in their homes and with their families. They only need to ask themselves a few simple questions. Do I know more or less people that are unemployed than those that were without jobs 4 years a go? Is my family doing better economically? If I had to put my house on the market, do I feel better doing that now, than I did when Obama first took office? Don't be decieved. It doesn't matter how your parents voted or who is the best speaker. For me, what matters is job security, the future of my children and what kind of weight we are putting on their shoulders, how much expenses such as the cost of a gallon of gas. What matters to you? Obama's success or failure can easily be portrayed one way or the other, but the true answer lies within the boundary of each of our lives and how they are affected.
Don't forget the Nobel Peace Prize
'If you don't have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from.'... is exactly what R&R are doing...
We're not blind to his "Accomplishments". We just don't believe they are "accomplishments" in the traditional positive connotation of the word. ObamaCare is a HUGE infringement on the free market and personal liberties that WILL come back to bite every single person who thinks it's a great idea now. He didn't "rescue" the auto industry, he enslaved it to government oversight which will lead to more expensive, lower-quality cars - because anything the government touches ends up costing more due to the excessive bureaucracy involved. He ended the Iraq war on Bush's timetable, so that's no big news. His "sweeping" Wall Street reforms are going to sweep all hope of a truly free market, where competition leads to higher quality and lower cost for the consumer to choose from, right off the map. His "rescue" of the economy from collapse actually prolonged the agony and has us in a snail's-pace "recovery" (and we learned this week that we have 88 million unemployed out there) when the pain would have been swift and the markets would have recovered faster if he hadn't touched it. He "improved food safety"?? - By handing MORE control over to the department that approves drugs which "may cause death" but which outlaws natural supplements that have been used for CENTURIES?
And I could go on.
But the point is: What you (and he) tout as his "accomplishments", the wise among us see as the next step toward totalitarian enslavement. In a few years, we'll be happy to say we told you so.
I retired in January 2007 with an IRA worth $337,238. By October it had grown to $358, 326 and I thought I was in good shape and had made an ok decision. By the time President Obama was inaugurated in January 2009 my retirement savings had crashed to $233,000. It has now recovered to $303,000. Am I better off than I was four years ago? Unquestionably. But I still have some ways to go before I get that assurance that I will be okay. I salute the President's leadership and hope the next four years will get me back to where I was when the wreckless Republicans drove us to dispair.
Obamacare - cost 2.7 trillion (obama said 900 billion), 21 new or higher taxes, 4 million seniors to lose medicare, higher premiums, companies quit offering insurance, not one republican vote for obamacare, panel to decide treatment, dr. shortage, lower care, obamacare doesn't cover millions, majority of Americans against obamacare, etc etc.
If you don't have a record to run on make your opponent the man to run away from. Make the election about little things (Big Bird).
