Live coverage of the Democratic National Convention

I have a real problem with this constant demand of all politicians to recognizing Bethlehem,God and Israel. Now with all respects to the Jewish people in the United States, the USA consists of people from all parts of the world and represents religions of all kinds. So why are the Jewish people always demanding the recognition of Israel. They are not Israeli's !! They are Americans!!!.How about recognizing New Delhi India, Cairo Egypt,Karachi Pakistan etc,.You must get the point.I am a christian and follow the teachings of Christ who was born in Israel but I don't attach any more importance to Israel then I do any other Country.I can never understand this pre-requisite by the Jewish people of the USA that every aspiring candidate for the presidency must pledge an allegiance to Israel. It boggles my mind.
To get elected these days you have to shine Pat Robertson's shoes, kiss the Pope's ring, and tickle Netanyahu's n--, er fancy.
Friends don't let friends drive drunk with power, a lesson many in Israel could have endorsed both before and after Secretary Rice and the Bush administration gave the country carte blanche for their 2006 invasion of Lebanon.
As a culturally-Jewish person I've gotta chime in. Most Jewish people I know (and I live in an exceptionally Jewish area) do not demand the president to pledge allegiance to Israel. In fact, many of us frequently criticize Israel and the American leaders who kowtow to Israeli conservatives. In my experience, the Jews who vote only on "what's good for Israel" are extremely conservative, both religiously and politically. They are a loud minority; the vast majority of Jewish people in the U.S. are progressives/liberals. Based on our history, yes, most of us would like Israel to remain safe, but we vote based on things like the U.S. economy, health care, the environment, etc.
When it gets boring and I am sure it will. Switch the channel and watch the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants play the Dallas Cowboys. The ONLY stadium in America worth being at this night.......Met Life.
Go Geeeeeeeee Men!
Yeah i know speeches that have any bearing in reality i.e policies is not a conservative stuff.
They'd rather vote on a priori concepts rather than let facts and reality govern their decision.
Hey there, IrishHypocrite! We missed you on the thread about how a priest made a mockery of all the lies you like to tell about how Catholic priests aren't dirty pedophiles. Feel free to go back to fellating the Giants, although they're probably too old for you since they have pubes.
What a filthy person you are "grumpy". God have mercy.
Fr Groeschel is obviously mistaken in regards his recent interview comments. He himself admits the shortcoming. An incredible priest and wonderful apologist for the faith Fr Groeschel is not perfect but he is definately persona Christi. What may have been revealed to him privately in ding interviews with victims and victims families are not told here. That a 14-16-17 year old could possibly be one who introduces an affectionate interlude is not at impossible in this day & age. What he is saying is no different that what Gov Deval Patrick had introduced recently in Mass when he wanted to free multiple time sex offenders in his stae. Is Deval Patrick a "pediphile" too pig? He doesn't think they should be kept in jail. Patrick is a rising star and spoken of highly in the democratic ranks as a possible 2016 presidential candidate. Guess you'd be voting for a "pediphile lover".
To the point, Fr Groeschel is and always will be a thousand times the man YOU are sicko. A man who has dedicated his life to helping the porrest of the poor on the streets of Fort Apache the Bronx thru his many charitable efforts and programs. Including running a house for young male adults 18 and older in order to try to help them get a fresh start at life. Only a pig like you would assume that means he is at fault as are the many homosexual priests who have engaged with yooung adults in th Church's scandal. At 79 his health and well being are suffering ......... that is all too obvioous since his comments.
You sir, are a pig. Not worth my time .................May God have mercy on your liberal bastard soul.
I am no hypocrite. I love Fr Groeschel he is a wonderful Catholic Priest and a far greater person and gift to this world than Maddow or her weirdo followers. You are two peas in a pod, a disgrace.
Win or lose, ..........Go Geeeeeeeeee Men!
Every human is a hypocrite about something. Just by you saying this you are being hypocritical. Good try though.
Ahhh more of that condescending supposed Christianity. You call a person every name you can think of and then excuse it by throwing god in there. Ever stop to think god doesn't want his name evoked over your petty squabbles? No of course not, because god is really your ego. Don't bless people- that's just rude.
Your only attack on Deval Patrick- in order to try to justify your love of a person acknowledged to be a child molester- is to say that a. well sometimes kids come on to you (and somehow that DOESN'T make you a pedophile) and b. to completely misrepresent and lie about a policy position of someone else and then say no really he's the pedophile. The level of projection here is just incredible. You COULD admit the hypocrisy like an adult and you COULD self-examine. But that might mean admitting you aren't always 100% correct. And god forbid that (literally)!
MSBC team is doing a lousey job covering the convention. We want to hear the speakers rather than a BS session. The speakers are 100 times more important than anything you can say. So shutup and let us hear the speakers. They are terrific and you people are just noise. !
Switch over to C-SPAN. Live continuous coverage--no talk-overs, no interruptions.
I agree--MSN is doing a lousy job during the speeches.
What is going on with all this overtalking the speakers? What is their problem?
there's nothing to hear. very lackluster lineup compared to last night.
Bill Clinton? Sandra Fluke? Sister Simone? Lackluster? You gotta be kiddin me!
stknmov is a GOP troll; he thinks that anyone with a D after their name is boring.
These people must be watching a rerun of the Republican convention. THAT was lackluster.
Sandra Fluke, Elizabeth Warren, and Bill Clinton each hit it out of the park tonight. Job well done, speakers.
Anybody who still believes that Romney and Ryan should receive even slight consideration as Pres and VP is operating with less than a full deck.
I am so disappointed in the conversation taking place on MSNBC tonight. All you are talking about is Hillary Clinton's supposed run for President in 2016. What you need to be talking about is Barack Obama and his re-election in November 2012. Your talking points need to be about Barack Obama. Save 2016 for 2016. We need to worry about getting THIS PRESIDENT re-elected NOW in 2012. I am working on his campaign. I hear the voices of people telling me their concerns about the issues TODAY!!! That's what you need to talk about. TODAY. 2012.
C-SPAN
romney and ryan are asking if we are better off well look at this

so are we better off yes we are we have a pres who cares so like any thing in this world spend money to make money more people going to work more taxes for washington
we are better of yes yes yes
True and on top of everything you mentioned we got stuck since 2010 with an uncooperative GOP congress whose objective has been to make sure Obama fails so they can blame him. Not even debating his proposals. What ever would work they have obstructed.
I have not heard the GOP mentioning the obstructive congress. And the Dem convention has not mentioned it either.
We have to get rid of that congress so the subsidies and tax cuts can stop. So the jobs bill will go through and so we can stop the privatization of our government.
Rachel Maddow needs to shut the hell up about that dayum
Soldiers Parade... And I agree with Al Sanders... The team of MSNBC is talking
too damn much. We don't want to hear YOU... we want to see and witness the
DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION...
C-SPAN
I work in a very strong democratic union shop. Many of my colleagues have been watching MSNBC for convention coverage. Because of the reporting of Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews, several dozen of these union folk are now going to vote for Romney. Being a nationwide union that is well interconnected, I know this is a nation wide phenomena. If they keep up their relentless attacks it appears that Romney may win in a Reagan type landslide!
Uh, huh. Sure, we believe that.
What relentless attacks?
Yes let's shut up about our military. Yay we're becoming Republicans even faster than I'd imagine.
Gag
nolidad: you win the prize for dumbest f*king wingnut troll at MaddowBlog EVER.
Ahhh, 5hit...goodnight!
C-SPAN
HEY! LISTEN UP! YOUR BLUB OVER THE FEED WINDOW STILL SAYS TAMPA!!!!! I pointed this out in a comment yesterday. Is noone really going to fix it????
we do not only need a second term but also,a3rd and 4th term with hillary ,or elizabeth warren go ladies go.watch video (one more term)
Rachel ask the brain dead republicans to name the Obama policies that added $5 TRILLION to the national debt.
They seem to think it's all his fault. They talk so smart like they know it all but cannot name them nor tally up the $5 T
This is very important. Because I did my research and there are none.Just about $250 Billion. The rest are policies to fix GOP stupidity. But don't add up to that much.
Not even close.
Ironic isn't it: how often we've heard folks complain that muslim-americans will try to influence the government to adopt positions favorable to their ancestral homelands?
Great job tonight Rachael, as usual. Loved the commentary on Republican agenda to defeat President Obama, starting on the day he was inaugurated. Please repeat that on Thursday night before the President speaks when so many more people are watching. I think there are so many people that still don't get what obstructionists the Republicans have been.
I think we were all duped. Volunteer for 9 hours and go see the president speak. Well, just found out that the credentials are not good for Time Warner. I would have been a volunteer anyway. I just feel we were used and abused and lied too. They have all our information and my phone is ringing off the hook asking who I am voting for. Some idiot just called to ask if I had a favorable opion of Michael Jordan and someone named Dale somebody. I could care less about either. I hate being used and I feel real used right now. I took the day off work tomorrow to attend this event.
Time Warner is smaller, probably not enough room. I would revisit DNC site and submit request to take name off mail/call listings.
Your time and work for such a historic event is appreciated. Thank you for covering for the many of us who could not afford to be there.
It is because of the weather. Its not that they wanted to use you and forget you. Your work is appreciated and I am sure they will thank you properly when its all over. I know the public thanks you too.
Would you rather stand out there in a thunderstorm? That's the weather prediction for tomorrow night in Charlotte.
We watch your show almost every night, but tonight we switched to PBS to watch the Convention when you chose not to broadcast Cristina Saralegui's speech, Hers is an important voice in the Cuban community here in Florida and she needed to be heard.
We watch your show almost every night, but tonight we switched to PBS during your convention coverage because you chose not to broadcast Cristina Saralegui's speech. She is an important voice in the Cuban community here in Florida and her voice needs to be heard.
Some incredible speeches and representative REAL people !!!
(Do we have to see any more CodePink displays at the DNC, though? After all, I wasn't expecting to be continually exposed to any harsh "repara-therapy".)
Here's my bumper sticker! Ryan, will be cryin, because we ain't buying his Lying! Ok, it needs work, but you like it. Right :)
Sandra Fluke,
You are AMAZING! I expect to see MORE of you in the future. Young women (and men) like you give me great hope for this country!!
KUDOS!!!
I have here what may have been the origin of Romney's "rose by bedside" story. I dont know if it is coincidence, but considering Romney enjoys deceiving people I doubt it. He used to disguise as a State Trooper to deceive motorist. GOP also enjoys bullying. If the link doesnt work just google "Romeo-rose-wifes-bedside in UK

Rachel et al:
You spoke about Women's Health and Planned Parenthood. This is an oxymoron.
Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the world. They kill over 1.5 million babies every year in the US. They are all about profit . And abortions are big money. They cleverly lead you to believe that only 3% of their "life-saving" work is abortions...I will try to post the Annual Report File for 2010. Abortion is actually 97% of their business. They rake in over 1.5 billion dollars a year in abortion revenue. ($450.00- $1500 and much more for late term ..up to $15,000.) If PP feels abortion is a good choice for women why do they charge for it? They should allow free abortions...oh but no way.... and then they happily get millions of dollars from the taxpayers. 50, MILLION babies have been killed by abortion since Roe vs Wade..(BTW, the Roe never had an abortion and is now a staunch fighter for Pro-Life. ) That is more people than have died in all the wars in which the US have engaged.
What is it about ripping a baby from a mother's womb and tossing it in a trash can does PP call Women's Health Care. Remember 1/2 of the babies aborted are women. The so-called "War Against Women" is waged, first and foremost in the Mom's womb.
Rachel, do you read any of the RIGHT side of this critical debate. Read "Unplanned" by Abby Johnson, a former Director of a PP clinic in Texas. If you are a good reporter you'll search all the facts. Abby was told in no uncertain terms that she had to get the abortion revenue up. PP has been cited for so many shoddy medical practices, fraud, deaths (3 weeks ago Tonya Reeves, mother of one child, died as the result of a botched abortion. PP DID NOT CALL 911. They let her bleed for 5 hours and when finally a call was made by her family, PP gave them NO information and so the Physicians had to spend precious time figuring out what happened. The Doctors told the family and reporters that this happens all the time. Safe, Rare ??? NO.
None...right...none of PP clinics offer mammograms. They have no mammogram equipment. Call them ..you'll see. They do a manual exam that any woman can do by herself. Manual exams have been d/c as a cancer screening model because they will not uncover any tumors in the early stages. They collect the money and refer the women to another facility for Mammograms... Double billing here...
PP is worth billions. They donated 1.5 Million dollars to support Obama. ??? Shouldn't they use that money for health care not for political donations as that money comes from us taxpayers. Why don't they use some $$$ to fund adoption programs, care for Moms in crisis pregnancies. Why do they sell baby parts for profit...?
Please do as a good anchorwoman would do and give fair coverage of both sides.
Thank You.
Dear NancyC:
Why do you and the GOP insist on forcing your personal religious beliefs on the rest of us? You do know that is what the Taliban is doing, right?
Look, do whatever you wish for yourself, but please stay the hell out of my bedroom and my wife's vagina. Fail to do that, and I guarantee you will wind up like OBL and those belligerent sub-human SOB's in Afghanistan.
Thank you;
Kiev Ukraine
You are incorrect about PP not providing mammograms, perhaps you should not speak for ALL states. Without PP in Oregon I would not have received the mammogram that identified my breast cancer at a Stage 0 and saved me lots of in treatments.
Yeah, except for the real number is something like 300,000 abortions.
Not really. PP is a non-for-profit which means they don't make income on the services they charge for. They also give discounts and often times will forgo charging for abortion or other healthcare services. This is why I would suggest you actually set foot in a Planned Parenthood center and actually talk to people who work there instead of just standing outside screaming X, Y, and Z and reading other websites who willingly lie to you.
Er no. If you want to be more cynical you could say that they document that abortion accounts for about 10% of their expenditures. Their services generally range from $300-$1,000 unless they are emergency services for D&C procedures, but not $15,000. That's just ridiculous.
They do not make a profit on the amount they charge for an abortion. This and the fact that PP centers are usually operated out of smaller buildings that are far more manageable allow for PP to help control costs to make abortion services more affordable to women. The amount they charge is the amount that is necessary to cover the procedure. Sometimes they will offer this procedure for free or for a reduced cost- it depends on the facility and the medical condition in question. The subsidies they gain from taxpayers aren't used on abortions. FTR because their abortion services aren't subsidized this also makes it more difficult for them to charge lower amounts (since they get no help in covering the costs associated with an abortion). Honestly this is like asking why a non-for-profit like The Humane Society charges for adoptions of animals. By your logic they shouldn't do so because doing so means they REALLY don't want their dogs/cats to find homes. No...they have to keep the lights on to take in all the new dogs and cats that come in and they have to cover the costs of operations: both in terms of the business itself and the spaying/neutering and other treatments given to the animal before he/she was adopted out.
Ugh well this is a rough estimate. The real number is probably something like around 30 million since Roe vs. Wade. But you are framing this incorrectly. How many were performed prior to Roe vs. Wade? Here's a hint: more abortions were performed before Roe vs. Wade than were performed after. Roe is not an actual person. Jane Roe was the alias used by the woman during the trial. For the record she did not have an abortion because she was legally forced into not having one. You are, again, falsely framing the conversation to make it sound like she chose not to have the abortion. If that had been the case she would not have fought all the way to the Supreme Court. In the case of Roe she was forced to have the child because she could not get an abortion in Texas even after claiming to have been raped (then the only legal means for a woman to have an abortion). Before her case ever made it to the Supreme Court (thereby giving her the legal ability to have her abortion) her pregnancy came to term. Kind've common sense on that one. In the case of "Roe" changing her mind that's because she made the accusation that women were telling her they had 5 or 6 abortions (a claim that has never been substantiated).
Actually that isn't what happens in an abortion. You are using this language in order to intentionally upset people even though what you are saying is factually incorrect and grossly manipulative. It's funny: if you really had the moral high ground like you think you do then WHY would you need to lie and misrepresent your position? Half of those aborted aren't women. You are assuming this because there are 2 genders. What gender statistics exist are actually more complicated than that. Remember that gender identification is one of the last things to form. In reality it could be 80% are male who are aborted or 80% females. The fact that you present this shows that you do not understand how basic human biology works. And no. The war on women is the idea that you can take choice away from an individual in order to make them conform to what you arrogantly assume is correct. Curiously do you know what the abortion rate is in nations that do not allow abortions to be performed legally? Is it lower or higher than the rate in the US? If you do not know this answer then you don't get to pretend to be pro-life since you clearly do not care enough about life to do research into this subject. This is especially comical since you pretend to be telling all the "facts."
Nope. Tanya Reeves died from a hemorrhaging which does sometimes happen after a D&C procedure is performed. Unfortunately for you this means that she would have died had she attempted to give birth too. That means she likely was having the abortion in an attempt to save her life. But, ya know, you're so "factually" biased you just couldn't help yourself.
Do you even understand how referrals work? If you happen to go to a clinic that doesn't perform mammograms then that means the clinic gives you a breast exam and refers you to a specialist to get the mammogram. You would not need a mammogram unless something strange was detected by a regular breast exam. Referrals are what you must get in order to see a specialist. This is no different than seeing any other doctor to get a referral. That's how they work. It's not double billing unless you're proposing that we nationalize the health care system and make it all free. This doesn't negate that what services PP provides helps women or provides preventative measures against breast cancer.
PP isn't worth anything because it's a non-for-profit. That's not the way non-profit companies work. While yes they did donate to the Obama campaign that money was donated by individuals who work at PP. Individuals are not prevented from donating their salary to political campaigns. Secondly the money that is donated would, by your own logic, be profit and not taxpayer money. Even by your own argument this is just loony. They do not service adoption programs so it wouldn't make sense for them to do this, but they will refer you to an adoption center if you want to adopt instead. They provide counseling for whatever your needs are, even if those needs aren't abortions (I know that's AMAZING isn't it). Crisis pregnancy centers don't offer a service to women. They provide pamphlets to women and religious counseling (because you presumptive jackasses believe that if you just make everyone think like you, act like you, and do what you tell them to we'll finally have freedom). And PP doesn't sell off body parts. That is just insane. I also love that you advocate adoption. Are kids who are put up for adoption more or less likely to have abortions or unwanted pregnancies? Are they more or less likely to live in poverty? Are they more or less likely to live in food insecurity? Are they more or less likely to commit suicide and/or to suffer mental health problems? Are they more or less likely to have addiction problems? Are they more or less likely to belong to gangs? Are they more or less likely to develop severe health problems that will cause early death? To paraphrase a great comedian you only care about women giving birth to babies so that you can ship them off to war to die. Ya know, cause that's the moral thing to do.
THIS statement is an oxymoron. If you are lying, misrepresenting fact, manipulating people's emotions, being dishonest, and if what you're saying will cause more harm to the public than good then only a person who is fundamentally UNFAIR to the public would share your viewpoint. This is like saying a good anchorwoman would give the Nazi Party it's own time on air. No. Sometimes immoral people like you just have to be told to get over your own ego and stop thinking you're Jesus.
Apparently that "97 percent" figure has been floating around the right-wing blogosphere for some time. The figure seems to be a garbled number based on some convulted math derived from PP's numbers. Basically, PP performs about 330,000 abortions a year and makes about 800-1000 adoption referrals a year. Therefore (so goes the math), PP provides abortions to 97% of the pregnant women who visit it. I have no head for numbers, and so wil make no attempt to verify the math involved. I'll only note that there is a rather significant difference between the claim that "97 percent of pregnant women who go to Planned Parenthood get an abortion" (possibly true) and "97 percent of what Planned Parenthood does is abortion" (certainly false).
PP's annual report for 2009-2010 can be accessed here:
http://issuu.com/actionfund/docs/ppfa_financials_2010_122711_web_vf?mode=window&viewMode=doublePage
I managed to pull up an article that refers to the 1.5 million number. An article by a prolife writer pointed out that Planned Parenthood had conducted 1.5 million abortions from 2006 through 2010 (NOT "1.5 million abortions a year"). Or, as the prolife writer rather luridly put it:
"As head of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Cecile Richards presided over the grisly death by abortion of 1.5 million tiny, innocent babies from the time she took the helm at Planned Parenthood Federation of America in 2006 through 2010. She tucked an estimated $743 million in blood money into PPFA bank accounts for her efforts."
The baby-killing rhetoric aside, the figure of 1.5 million abortions over the course of four years (not one year) sounds a little high, but is plausible.
(Reference: Rita Diller, "Planned Parenthood: 1.5 Million Abortions under Cecile Richards," http://www.lifenews.com/2012/08/16/planned-parenthood-has-done-1-5-million-abortions-under-cecile-richards/ )
We're all lucky to have such an insignificant intellect order us to consider the ignorant, dogmatic argument along with the informed and reasoned one. I don't know where we would be without your breathtaking arrogance and imbecility to guide through these tough decisions we face.
You are deluded and boring. If you are opposed to abortion, then don't have one. It is really rather simple.
You, nor the government has any business peering into a woman's uterus as some sort of womb police. That is totalitarianism.
Dear RepubliTroll: stick your head back where the sun doesn't shine, you braindead bimbo.
NancyC: Do you at least support abortion in cases such as the life of the mother being at risk? If not, how can you consider yourself pro-life?
NancyC's comments were not intended to be factual statements.
(We've already been through that via Jon Kyl.)
@Scholar- I knew where the number came from. The point is it's incorrect. Nancy is taking factual realities and then misrepresenting them or lying about them entirely. Nancy then has the gall to say that Maddow should give her lies and misrepresentations "fair" time on the air. No. Giving a lie air time only serves to make sure that other people believe the lie. That's it.
I want to be Elizabeth Warren when I grow up.
A Plastic White Wannabe Indian?
This is the report from Planned Parenthood for 2010 . The Allan Guttmacher Institute provides this information. Dr. Guttmacher was one of the early President of the Planned Parenthood Association.
drop dead
Whew - Good thing they fixed the platform before Warren rattled-off that little scripture and ended her speech with "God bless America"!!
I love almost every single one of the folks doing commentary on MSNBC tonight (Steven Schmidt - I respect you for being there) - but I would LOVE to hear an entire speech - could ya'll please shut up and talk when there isn't a speech going on? With sincere love from Texas.
Trying to Post it again..guess your site won't accept images... I'll try on your FB page.
You are a bright woman,Rachel...please give the Pro-Life side a little credit . We are just trying to save babies.
Thanks
No, you're just trying to control women in favor of clumps of cells, and then don't give two @!$%#s once they're born. If you spent a third of the money and effort you spend on trying to control women on making sure the desired children are healthy and fed, THEN you'd be pro-life. As it is, you're just anti-choice.
I'll second that. Religious hypocrites, the lot of em.
Just remember, this is the same group that believes women deserve less pay for the same work. This is he same group that says women can't lead in the church. -The same group that believes government should be an extension of the church, therefore no women should lead in the government. This is the same group that would prevent access to contraception because they believe it contravenes God's divine will.
And... oddly, this is the same group that supports unlimited handgun rights and wars of choice that have resulted in hundreds of thousands of human deaths and casualties, primarily for oil and for Israel. Prior to the war, the US embargo against Saddam Hussein killed tens of thousands of babies and children in Iraq.
You only care about those babies until they grow up to be little "whores" who you then hope will bleed to death from having an abortion so you can tout it on a blog website as evidence that being a "whore" is wrong.
I swear what IS it with the right wing and their love fest with their own personal reflection? You aren't moral, you're not righteous, you're not saving lives, you aren't standing up for justice, you aren't helping people, you aren't better than anyone else, you aren't trying to be a good person. You want everyone to act like you, think like you, do as you say they should do, and then you want them to praise you for how awesome you are for making them conform to every little detail that you've arbitrarily decided you're entitled to make them conform to. You confuse Jesus with your own image.
Well said!!
