Ingredients:
- 1 ounce of brandy or cognac
- Juice of half-a-lemon (a real lemon!)
- Two teaspoons of grenadine (again, real is recommended)
Directions:
Stir ingredients with ice. Shaking works, but stirring preserves the clarity, which is aesthetically better when it's mixed with champagne.
Strain it into your glass.
Top with champagne.

Fact Check on your 9/7 broadcast: Rocky V is definitely the worst Rocky film.
The original Rocky is clearly the best and Rocky V is clearly the worst. Reasonable people can disagree about the relative placement of the remaining films, but that much is clear.
Reasonable people realize that such matters are moot since they are opinion rather than fact. In my opinion action films featuring lousy acting might be a blast at times they hardly ever evoke the emotions a good actor/actress can.
Case in point, Shogun, a long TV movie with ups and downs that would not have made it except for the acting abilities of the cast. With just a look or gesture Richard Chamberlain said more than a grumbling Stallone could in a thousand words.
Congrats on the 4 year anniversary! After watching you expertly walk us through the cocktail tonight I am wondering if you need to start a second show on the food network. You even had the tips, like the shaker with citrus! Great show tonight!
I congratulate your Fourth Anniversary. I Enjoy your show. Is Fox news owned in any way by Mitt Romney? They seem to favor him and are very partial to anything he says or does. Terrible journalism and not trustworthy. Also I thought a law was passed regarding how much a Presidential candidate can spend in an election, am I wrong? Why has there been no disclosure been made as to Romney's sources that are giving money to his campaign? His spending is unheard of and could feed a poor world country for years. I saw where the owner of Fox news dislikes Romney but is backing him financially because he(Romney) will help millionaires like himself save in the tax cuts Romney plans. (Sorry this is under the wrong column) If Romney is elected it is because he has bought the Presidency and the American Public is as stupid and gullible as he believes we are. He is two faced , lying ,manipulative and we better pray hard that he does not win. But then he believes even God cannot stop him, he said " It will take an act of God to prevent him from winning" . Can anyone answer the question about Fox news, I bet he has money invested in that . Thank You
Rachel, here's to you on a great 4 years. I love the show, I watch all of you to be honest and the convention coverage was pristine! Thank you for the facts, which I put out there and hopefully people with take heed...although there are those who argue, lie and don't believe in the facts! What can you do? Can't wait to read your book & I can't wait to try that delicious cocktail.
Congrats Rachel ...
I watch your show religiously every night at 12 midnight since thats the time I get out of work..
I only have one question , When will the management at NBC realize that you are their best shot at making MEET THE PRESS what it once was ... the premiere political news hour on national television ?..
When the great TIM RUSSERT was the host I never missed a show. TIM RUSSERT was in a class by himself... I miss the guy dearly and unfortunately MEET THE PRESS in my personal opinion , died along with TIM RUSSERT...
Needless to say I have no respect for DAVID GREGORY , he is a zero to the negative !...
Hopefully someone up in the Ivory tower at NBC studios will decide to take a risk on you someday and allow you to host MEET THE PRESS on a regular basis in the foreseeable future...
That is the day we are all waiting for.....
Congratulations to the Rachel Maddow Show! and to MSNBC for outstanding convention coverage. Thank you for providing honest and refreshing takes on what occured each evening. I watched on line and appreciate being able to do so. You guys are the best! Have a great weekend and get some rest. (Rachel, the Harry's Pick me up reminds me of my favorite cold remedy - B&B Sidecar - I don't know if it cures the common cold, but I have fixed myself one and felt better in the morning (or so I tell myself).)
I love your show and the detail you and your staff present on a daily basis.
I am disturbed that a constant negative frightening e-mail campaign about President Obama continues and affects people who are ordinarily nice folks. The latest attributed to Michael Savage, "Could this be America's Last Presidential Election?"
The very nice person who sent this is a lonely grandmother who does wonderful things for many people. She is so afraid and truly believes this nonsense. No wonder folks are so polarized.
I would like someone to take care of the claim of the Romney campaign about the failure of President Obama's leadership, and the role the obstructionist behavior of the Republicans in Congress in this supposed failure.
Sounds good , but then I love lemons.
I'm sorry, but before you drink that, I'm going to need to see some ID.
msnbc must be desperate for programming to keep u on for 4 years!!!!
Congratulations to you and your staff on your four year anniversary! It is wonderful to have a show to watch that respects our intelligence. We are going to enjoy the drink recipe during our victory party in November!
I am really interested in Rachel's thoughts on the Mitt Romney Meet The Press interview this Sunday.
Was this a thorough interview? Did it ask the tough questions?
I personally do not believe it did, and have expressed my feelings about the interview and the MTP program as of late.
But I would really like Rachel Maddow's perspective on this specific interview and what kind of questions she may have posed to the candidate had she landed the interview herself.
Just curious.
Congrats Rachel for the anniversary, and the TRMS staff is due extreme kudos. I remember listening to Rachel and Al Franken on Air America, and I remember when Rachel was a major full time guest on Keith's show. TV talk has been changed by TRMS; the format is not the same explain a story, talk about the story. Rachel uses a story tactic that builds the tension to the conclusion, and takes angles that other programs can only hope to scrape the surface of. She can blend humor and serious together in the same story, and keep you interested. She involves staff in stories, and takes you into the staff meetings; that is not done on prime time news. She makes the best cocktails in the world, and I can only pray that I will be lucky enough one day to have her make me a drink in person! I would fly to NYC just for that! Thanks again, Rachel; you are always sunshine on my day, no matter how bad the news of the world seems......
love Obama and will vote for him again
Rachel, whenever I am in America, I enjoy watching your show. You are super smart, beautiful and are empowered by truth.
Romney is an ugly America.
Just a comment/warning about Harry's Pick-me-up. This drink is TART and it is STRONG! I followed the instructions faithfully, but I used a dry champagne and the resulting drink made me pucker up on the first sip.
If you choose to drink a second one, I recommend you stay away from any equipment heavier than the TV remote. Great cocktail Rachel, curious what the origin of this one is.
Congrats on TRMS 4th birthday and yes i agree Ed should do at least 1 show a week in his eastwood's voice:). Btw, does buttered noodles still cure your hangover?? Curious.
If you can't find real grenadine, you can make it yourself. There are two recipies:
1. Put equal amounts of pomegranate juice and ultrafine sugar in a jar, then shake until the sugar is disolved. (This makes a very fresh-tasting grenadine, but it tends to go bad after a couple of months.
2. Make simple syrup, but using pomegranate juice instead of water. This is more syrupy, and keeps for ages.
