Doug LaMalfa is the one on the left, buying the cereal.
The race for California's newly redrawn 1st Congressional District is not expected to be close. The district, north of Sacramento, is heavily Republican. The retiring representative, Republican Wally Herger, has held the seat since 1987, and he tapped (adding: now former) Republican State Senator Doug LaMalfa to replace him. The Sacramento Bee says LaMalfa is "considered a shoo-in."
At a debate last night sponsored by the Tea Party, LaMalfa made a brief and adventurous detour into what you might loosely call science. As viewer Lori Taylor of Junction City, California, put it, he told the crowd that women who have abortions are more likely to get cancer. When local station KRCR pressed LaMalfa on that, he stood by his position, saying:
"Research has shown there that there's higher level of incidence at risk so i would want women to be fully informed of all the aspects before making a decision like that ... I think that shows more care for women then by simply shuffling them off to an abortion mill and so that's a very important distinction that needs to be made."
For the record, the theory LaMalfa has now worked into his congressional campaign is, in scientific terms, nonsense.
(We love when people send hometown news, pics, etc.)
UPDATE: LaMalfa's campaign sent out a correction today. From the Sacramento paper:
"After last night's debate I checked the most recent research on the question of a link between abortion and cancer and found that current research does not support the conclusion that abortion causes cancer," [LaMalfa] said in the statement. "I hope that any woman considering this procedure discusses all the health consequences with her doctor and makes a fully informed decision."

That's right up there with the southern-fried Republican moron who said the other day that the birth of children with disabilities is "God's curse" on a woman for having aborted her first-born child, the one that is "dedicated to the Lord."
Further proof that religion is a mental disorder.
Religion is mere self-comforting fantasy; the mental disorder is more in the mind of La Malfa, the speaker. His statement is grammatically incoherent and nonsensical. The clinical term for it is "word salad"- incongruent words cobbled together by a person who utters them with the demeanor of someone who thinks they have profound meaning.
The difference between this form of psychosis and ideological extremism is blurry. Those suffering from either malady tend to say anything that comes to mind, believing that their delusion is more important than facts and evidence thereof.
Besides, I thought menstruation was supposed to be "God's curse" on women... I guess I just can't keep up with the nuttiness. (eyeroll)

Research also shows that every time a Man votes Republican, he loses 10 IQ points!
And, considering the topic of this post, what happens every time a woman votes Republican?
Not being combative, just curious.
Based on the Republicant's current war on women I'd say that any woman who votes GOP loses 50 points on her IQ. Talk about voting against you own interests! Geesh!
Huh. And I was sure the IQ losses had to come first... :D

Research shows that Doug LaMalfa is an idiot!
Republican men need to stay away from reproductive issues and maybe science altogether. They really suck at it.
I saw the same thing when I attended church: half-assed attempts to legitimize their position using pseudo science that never held up under peer review or just outright fraud.
I find it amusing that these religious doofusses, who poo-poo science all the time, try to dress their silly notions up in scientific-like language.... to give them more... credibility! C'mon you morons, is science legit or not? You can't have it both ways.
I wonder if LaMalfa knows that Snap, Crackle and Pop are gay? (The neckerchiefs give it away.)
LMAO neckerchiefs.
I just spewed coffe on my wall... OMG great comment
Won't these GOP science deniers be surprised when they find out lying about women's physiology causes impotence not treatable with a blue pill.
For those who have never been to that part of California, it's the state's equivalent of rural Missouri. The average white male up there stops school after 8th grade. They make the Okies in Bakersfield look like geniuses.
You are spot on with that description. Twenty five years of Wally Herger's policies have brought neither jobs or prosperity to this district. He consistently voted against anything which could have made lives easier for his constituents, from trying to abolish the minimum wage to opposing health care reform and jobs bills. Despite his disastrous policies, it is unlikely a Progressive will win this seat. I am surrounded by low information voters who get most of their 'news' from Fox and Rush. Sigh.
Current research tends to show that GOTP voters have more reptilian brain functioning than non GOTP voters!
Brain ... functioning? You see the problems with that statement don't you?
The bogus abortion/breast cancer link is how this memekiller cut his teeth. One of the first memes he killed any chance he got. He failed.
Dang it when will you stop listening to real scientists and start accepting ones with degrees from Bob Jones or liberty university!
Just you wait. Once the republican party suppresses the vote enough to gain complete control all this "sac-religious" science and Archeology will be banned. We will also hand the schools over to the church of the almighty dollar and let big business take control of all the "government" items like the military or roads and SSI.
LaMalfa Corrects Debate Comment

Aren't you Doug LaMalfa's campaign consultant?
Thanks, Dave. I'll update the post.
I look forward to hearing about lamalfian evolution and a lamalfian theory of gravity.
Let me go ahead and tell you what they are:
Evolution: an evil THEORY sponsored by the scientific leftist revolutionaries who want to take over the world for the antichrist.
Gravity: it's God pushing you down to Earth so you can't fly up to Heaven, duh.
IrishPat7 please stop being an asshat and go back under your bridge.
See, here's the thing Irish, I'm about seventy IQ points above you, so your silly word-salad insult just makes me feel sorry for you and everyone who has to deal with your borderline-retarded self.
Please, stop posting. You're just embarrassing yourself.
Evolution is just a theory!!!!
Gravity is just a "theory" too, MarkD. Want to jump off a tall building and disprove it?
Mark, please look up the definition of scientific theory. Yes, science can be scary, but trust me. You'll learn something.
But creationism is divine truth, verified by the believers!! (sarcasm here, people....)
A scientific theory is "a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_theory
The word 'theory' in science does not have the same meaning as you, Mark, are giving it. A scientific theory has been proven 'six ways from Sunday'. Actual, provable facts are involved.
I think you might mean the 2nd Congressional District, not the 1st.
I think he just lost "Shoo-in" status. These guys are such idiots....you would think after the weekly GOP "foot -in- mouth" episodes, they would do a little research first before spewing their nonsensical BS....But then again, look at the audience, Tea Baggers.....They believe anything you tell them.
I lived in Calfornia most of my life, and everyone talks about it being sooo liberal, well if you drive through some of these rural counties, or parts of central California you will think otherwise. Bakersfield is just plain scary, they still celebrate that evil POS District Attorney Ed Jagels (google his name for some really scary stories about 'justice' under that guy). There' was a judge in Colusa County (not sure he's still there) who played fast and loose with the law and ran his courtroom like something out of the 1880's...
I must admit, I always thought Calif was like Mass, but warmer and nicer. Then they went all anti-gay marriage and since then I'm hearing a lot of right wing stuff. I must admit, I wanted to retire there....not so sure anymore.....
I'm so ashamed this guy is running in our town! This is a small area and one of the few places in Ca that's republican dominated! I have lived here all my life and fortunately I am not one of them. This jerk takes millions of dollars in AG subsidies every year for his families rice farm he's a liar and he is for welfare just not for the poor but for corporate welfare. I'm proud to support Jim Reed the man who is running against this clown he is a good upstanding man with great ideas. In our area we can this jerk DOUG LAMOUTHA cause all he does is let crap fly out! My apologies to the woman of this country we are ALL DUMBER for having heard this man speak last night!
As another district resident and a Jim Reed supporter, I agree that LaMoutha is an absolute waste of oxygen and detrimental to our residents. Jim Reed is a moderate that shows common sense, will not take any pledges, works for a living, and does NOT take federal subsidies for rice and water.
Jim Reed is running a tough campaign against LaMoutha (although the mouth is making it easier everytime he opens his mouth) but does not have the financial resources the doodles have. Our district has been in the grip of the doodles for over 25 years and Jim is our best chance for changing that. If you agree, please go to www.jimreed2012.com and donate $5. If everyone does that we have a much better chance of bringing some common sense to our district.
I am constantly amazed that many of these Teahadists actually seem to have never 'known' a woman....at least one who was awake or otherwise able to talk...How are they reproducing? When Limbaugh was ranting about Sandra Fluke and birth control,he clearly thought you used it like condoms....He did not seem to understand all the fidly lady bits...Not like an actual man who had lived with a woman. They seem to have all these made up boy's club ideas about the fairer sex....It's sad.
Perchance their ladies are of the Victorian type and keep their bloomers on in bed...with a hole to allow for the husband to release his evil humors. Seriously, folks, that's what they did in the 1880s.....
One factor that these pseudo science people say in their report that the number of women who have had proceedures late in their pregnancies, there was no mention why they had them so late in gustation. Almost all late gustation abortions are done for medical reasons eg Ca of the uterus diagnosis with MS ect there is no digression as to weather these late term abortions in his n were done for purley elecvtive reasons
Here's a story that has NOT been picked up by mainstream media that really NEEDS to be
http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/09/07/809861/judge-to-woman-sexually-assaulted-by-cop-when-you-blame-others-you-give-up-your-power-to-change/
It seems silly that so many people would presume that Republican = Christian or any other faith. It is really very off-base, and unfortunately most of the people that bring their religion in to politics are fundamentalists anyways, and presume that they themselves can judge others on God's behalf.
It seems silly, but in this day and age, Republican so very frequently does equal Christian (but not very often is it any other faith). The Republican platform is full of references to God and the "War on Women" stuff is justified by biblical referencing.
While Doug LaMalfa is an embarrassment to Northern California for this ridiculousness, the tea party which he is fooling with these words are an embarrassment to the whole human race.
"Research has shown there that there's higher level of incidence of risk of a) cardiovascular disease and b) offending rational humans when a public official spouts off about something they have no actual knowledge of. So I would want State Senators and Representatives to be fully informed of all the aspects of gobbling doughnuts/Whoppers/Big Macs while pontificating on women's biology and rights before making a decision like that ... I think that shows more care for women (and reality) then [sic or change to 'than'] by simply shuffling off to Krispy Kreme/Burger King/McD to hold court on these serious issues and so that's a very important distinction that needs to be made."
I can refute all that stuff with one statement: Nuns get breast cancer too, in the same proportion as the rest of the female population.
Oh my gawd! You're saying that NUNS are getting all kinds of secret abortions!!!!!!! Waaaahhhhhh!!!!
PS Why are conservatives not elated at the introduction of morning-after pills (in the 80s, mind - this is not a new invention, though they have gotten even better). Nearly every married (yes, married) woman I know has used the morning-after pill when contraception failed. Yes, many couples often use condoms, particularly after a baby or when the woman is breastfeeding, etc). A morning-after pill means you prevent a pregnancy occurring. I think these men don't understand than conception isn't immediate. The sperm can take days to go up through the uterus into the fallopian tubes (if you're not man enough to read this, you're perhaps not man enough to debate this issue at all). So, it's not 'fresh' sperm that necessarily connect with an egg. A morning-after pill means that menstruation is induced immediately, so that there will be menses now and no chance of implantation. Oh - sorry. Perhaps there *is* a small chance that the sperm did connect with the egg and found no safe haven in which to nourish itself. Well, many fertilised eggs do not 'attach', and one doesn't mourn for them. Why on earth do Republicans seem hell bent on forcing women to have babies they do not want? It is very simple to prevent a pregnancy - particularly given these added stop-gap protections in case your initial protection fails. So celebrate that. Every morning after pill (well, most) means no unintended pregnancy and no termination. But even so, most terminations are in the first 8 weeks. So how this clown thinks that affects breastfeeding is beyond me. People have later-term miscarriages and stillbirths - do people sit around telling them they're doomed to breast cancer because they didn't breastfeed their dead babies? And what about all the women who can't breastfeed their babies/don't want to? Sorry - I do not know *why* I am bothering. These men do not care about women's cancer rates. They only care about controlling women by giving them fewer options in life and condemning them - particularly if they have had sex.
While we're on the subject, the whole exemption for rape is kind of offensive. If the woman enjoyed the sex act and accidentally gets pregnant, Republicans want to condemn her to have the baby. If she didn't enjoy the sex and it was forced upon her, some Republicans want to allow her the right to choose. Shouldn't *all* women have the right to choose. It's as if the Right is so concerned about female sexuality and emancipation that they want to distinguish between women who 'asked for it' and those who didn't. ALL women deserve the right to control their fertility. Obviously most women want to do that as simply and as early as possible, with preventative birth control but life (and science) are not perfect, and until they are, women *must* be granted their right to control fertility.
Well said MirandaLondon.
