Standing alongside Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, President Obama spoke from the Rose Garden this morning, commenting on the violence in Libya, and honoring the four Americans who were killed in Benghazi.
The full transcript of the remarks is online, but of particular interest was the president's vow of "justice" in Libya.
"No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for," Obama said. "Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done."
The president made no reference to the campaign, politics, or his domestic opponents.

Was monitoring Laura Ingraham this morning. I think she gets that Romney was too inept to realize there would be a rally behind the flag, rally behind the strong leader impulse. Her line of attack was to go with the horror, and to whip up fervor against radical islamists and that we have to wake up and confront them forcefully- "something Obama is incapable of doing".
She clearly hasn't thought this through, because that line of argument will run into the American sentiments on foreign policy that Maddow outlined so deftly last night.
I mean jeez Ingraham get a clue. This is not left - right thing. People just rally when there is a crisis- it is just plain mechanics of politics. The president doesn't have to remind anyone which party successfully brought bin Laden to justice. When he says Justice will be done, it has a decimating political impact. If he was a GOP president the same would be true. You don't yell cat calls at the leader during the crisis. It looks real bad.
The far right is willingly walking into a meat grinder. It's hard to believe in conspiracy theories when you see how technically juvenile their approach has been at dealing with a news event. There is a stock play book for candidate responses to a foreign crisis with the opposition in power but the GOP is behaving like they have no self awareness about how their positions are going to play in Peoria.
It is just stunning. I thought the GOP primaries were surreal. We are way past Fellini, this is getting Dadaesque.

Because they have no such understanding of normal everyday intelligent people. They know exactly who votes for them. A) The greedy less-tax-is-better crowd or B) the ignorant: racists, homophobes and religious. Group A isn't going anywhere no matter what he says. Group B is typically lazy so to get them to the polls they say whatever they need to in order to get them excited. It needn't be true.

"Since our founding, the United States has been a nation that respects all faiths. We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. But there is absolutely no justification to this type of senseless violence. None. The world must stand together to unequivocally reject these brutal acts."
...And Romney, to illustrate that he can take all three sides of any issue, will defend "Senseless violence" as an American value that goes all the way back to, ummm, the war in Iraq.
This, apparently, is an "Apology for America". Oy gevalt.
Can you even imagine a President Romney delivering such a statement with even the slightest level of seriousness, reverence, or credibility? I can't.

Actually, Libyan citizens died protecting those at the embassy and evacuating US personnel. Just as it doesn't really work to paint all Americans with the same brush as an ultraconservative Florida preacher, it doesn't work to paint all the people of Libya with the same brush as ultraconservative Islamic extremists.

Objectively, the Libyan incident does not signify as monumental a looming crisis as the financial meltdown of 2008. But it does sort of feel like Romney is getting smaller and smaller, doesn't it?

Now... odd things at an odd time. When Romney and his minions (you too, Cheney), began berating the President and his middle-east policy earlier in the week, it marked the first time Romney has opened his mouth about it.
All of a sudden, things start going pop pop bang bang in an area that has been relatively quiet for a while (Syria notwithstanding)... One wonders if Cheney is still in touch with his Blackwater boys, the "do-anything you want done Dick" guys.
It's just odd timing for something to come along and take the heat off Romney's failing campaign, and give him a new thing to blame Obama for.
The worst part... Romney will of course lie and many of his herd, who for the most part have no idea what or where any of this is happening, and really don't care.

The difference between what happened in Egypt and what happened in Libya, is that the Egyptian military kept track of their weapons, while the Libyan revolutionaries got hold of most of Kaddafi's. So a protest becomes an assault.

According to the CNN report, "attackers used the protest outside the consulate as a diversion," though sources "could not say whether the attacker instigated the protest or merely took advantage of it."

The Mossad certainly has the ability to make a video with higher production values than the one that sparked the protests in Libya and Egypt. If the unimaginable happens, and Romney is elected in November, we would gladly have a coup here in Canada and have Obama. Back in May a poll showed that if Canadians could vote for Obama or Romney right then, 65% said Obama and 9% said Romney. Who knows what the other 26% were thinking.
I suspect that it would be closer to 80% if a poll was taken now. It was that high for a very long time. Romney and teabaggers leave even the most right wing Canadians scratching their heads. (Ok we have some wackos too who could probably give the birther-teabaggers a run for their money).

YouTube has block the video in the Middle East but not else where. Why not everywhere? I don't know. I heard on NPR yesterday that they where reviewing whether or not to remove it entirely. My suggestion is that you and everyone else go onto YouTube and complain.

Last week the Russian remark he steps on his tongue. Now Egypt and Libya he danced on his tongue. There was no country or government attacking those embassies. It was a small mob. There was no apology given by anyone, just a reminder to respect other cultures and religions by someone inside the embassy fearing for their life! When President Obama says justice will be done believe it. Justice will be done. I for one can't wait for the debates. Debates, debates, debates. God bless Chris Stevens and Sean Smith who lost his life in that embassy last night.
I am appalled that our President is in NV campaigning the day following a terrorist attack on our embassy. Can he not even take one full day to take care of business. Does he not mourn our loss and need to make plans for how to respond? I have no respect for a man who shirks his duty.
