Muslims who kill people who criticize their religion just prove the point of the people criticizing it. I don't think people in the US would fill the streets in violent protest if Muslims started burning bibles and calling Christians infidels. Americans walk on eggshells so as not to upset Muslim people. Muslim people need to learn how forget about their fatwas and live peacefully in the modern world. They seem like a very violent people.
Violence shouldn't be the answer in any culture to any offensive act. But that said, respecting other cultures makes us stronger not weaker. It means we spend time on what's important and not attacking other people's values, especially in ways that they don't attack us. What's the positive social gain in burning the Quran? What was so important that someone had to mock what these people hold sacred? Freedom of speech isn't a blank check for freedom to be offensive.
I don't think it's fair to make sweeping assertions like that about Muslims. It is more likely to be the act of extremists, who exist in any faith and country. We don't know how Christian extremists would react if bibles were burnt. Muslims are taught not to burn the Bible (see quotes below) and probably would be executed for that in a Muslim country. In that sense, they are taught respect for another culture's values, whereas others are not taught respect for their culture.
I believe in freedom of speech and that these attacks are unacceptable; however I also think we need to be cognizant of other cultures, especially in our digital age, where anything we post online, can be immediately viewed a world away.
We have no shortage of violence over Chick-Fil-A, KKK/Neo Nazis, bullying gays, anti-abortionists killing doctors and bombing clinics, the Aurora killings, or Virginia Tech. In other words we have no shortage of people who kill out of extremism, racism, insanity, road rage or even in local street fights where one side felt disrespected.
Certainly Muslims can learn tolerance, but so can we.

From http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2010/09/10/would-muslim-burn-the-bible/
The Quran teaches Muslims to respect the sacred books of Christians and Jews as well, says Chris van Gorder, a religion professor at Baylor University in Texas.
“To burn a holy Quran for a Muslim is to throw down a gauntlet,” he says. “Those who deface any holy book, including the Bible, in many Muslim countries today, will be executed.
“How many Bibles have been burned in the Muslim world in the last nine years? None.”
j4comments: when you say: "respecting other cultures makes us stronger not weaker", do you also respect cultures that are racist and/or abuse women? I for one would appreciate it if those on the left would respect American culture to stand up for freedom of speech and not apologize for it.
The outrage you have towards Mitt Romney criticizing the administration is just as manufactured as the protests about a pathetic movie. However, if you are truly outraged your being just as close minded as the pathetic tools who did protest. Further, for the embassy to not by on full alert on the 11th anniversary of 9/11 show us yet again the utter incompetence of not only Obama but of the left.
Wow. You are really good at false equivalency.
Rachel, I love you, but when you talk about terrorists claiming 'credit' for their actions it sounds kind of offensive. I know it may be nit picking but it is a subject that demands sensitivity. Please try and say 'terrorists claim responsibility" instead.
Thanks, a loyal viewer since the beginning!
Mr. Romney's statements and actions in this situation are disgraceful. Even if this were simply an unfortunate error made in the heat and confusion of a situation, he's had time to collect information and realize the error and correct it. He has not only made no effort to do so, he has reiterated the mistake and is clinging fast to it. It is being denounced not only by members of the media of all stripes, conservative as well, but by members of his own party. This is serious. Anyone who does not understand that needs to go and check the facts and the order and nature of the events that have happened.
Mr. Romney's comments are not only offensive and disgraceful coming from an American citizen, they most certainly discredit him as a candidate for the president of this country.
Really, I don't see any coming back from this.

"The trailer was uploaded to YouTube by Sam Bacile, whom The Wall Street Journal Web site identified as a 52-year old Israeli-American real estate developer in California. He told the Web site he had raised $5 million from 100 Jewish donors to make the film. “Islam is a cancer,” Mr. Bacile was quoted as saying."
THE DAILY KOS had an excellent post about Mr.Romney, Sept.12.2012 83pm pdt. Open Thread for Night Owls by Hunter. It was quite an interesting character study of Mitt.
Sometimes I wonder if all Americans are Americans. All of this money coming in for Romney and no one knows where it is coming from. The government has to wonder if there are American people contributing to these groups to incite riots and if real American are killed; well this is war. These so-call Americans has a candidate they want in office and will go to the extreme to get that person in office. Romney issuing a statement just seem a little too quick because I feel he or someone in his campaign knew this was going to happen. I may sound crazy but I am concern about all of this Super Pac money for Romney. Remember weapons of mass destruction? Never found any WMD but the US invaded Iraq anyway and many of our soldiers died and many others hurt because a person like Dick Cheney wanted to go to war. What's the old saying "we are living in dangerous times"? Now puppet Romney issuing a statement saying crazy (or is it crazy) crap about the President. An yes still has not heard Romney say anything about the 4 Americans dying. No condolences, no sympathy, nothing to the family of our fallen Americans. Oh yes let's give thanks to the United State Supreme court for making it possible to wonder about where all of this money is coming from.
I feel the same way, Gladys.
