Easily my favorite quote from the Sunday shows was this gem from Liz Cheney, delivered on ABC's "This Week."
"[W]e've now had three-and-a-half years of Obama policy, and it looks an awful lot like, whether you're talking about the Mexico City speech in 2009, the Cairo speech in 2009, the extent to which he's been apologizing for America [1], he's abandoned some of our key allies, like Israel [2], Poland [3], Czechoslovakia [4], he's attempted to appease our enemies, the Iranians [5], for example, the Russians [6]. He's now getting ready, as we watch these scenes unfold on the air, to slash our defense [7]. And the defense sequestration includes over $120 billion for embassy security [8]. And so the president himself's got a terrible record on national security [9]."
I annotated the paragraph because, well, there's just so many amazing tidbits in it. Let's take them one at a time, shall we?
[1] The president never apologized for America.
[2] Israel doesn't feel abandoned by the U.S.
[3] Poland doesn't feel abandoned by the U.S.
[4] Czechoslovakia doesn't exist. (In April, the Romney campaign forgot this pesky detail, too).
[5] Harsh sanctions are the opposite of appeasement.
[6] There's been no appeasement with Russia.
[7] The modest defense cuts proposed by the White House have been endorsed by the Pentagon and the Joint Chiefs. It's Republicans who've proposed slashing defense.
[8] Actually, it's the Republican sequester plan that would cut funding at embassies.
[9] After killing bin Laden, decimating al Qaeda, and preventing terrorist attacks, it seems a little silly to characterize President Obama's record on national security as "terrible."
Incidentally, Cheney complained about "the Mexico City speech in 2009." I've read that speech and I haven't the foggiest idea why Cheney would find it objectionable. In fact, I can't even recall others on the right raising a fuss about it.

More and more it seems you can find more truth in an episode of South Park than you can in a Republican diatribe. To be fair Cartman seems to represent a fair portrayal of the greed of the right wing elitists.
Were all the lights in the chandelier filled with Liz Cheneys, there would be no need for a dimmer switch. When has she EVER said anything that made ANY sense? Why do they put her on TV? What a waste of airtime. It is not a matter of free speech, it is a matter of depriving people who make sense of the ability to enlighten us in the time spots she sullies.
Exactly, why does any program professing to be news or journalism include her. She's partisan to the point of nonsense. Has she any background other than nepotism to justify any credence?
That a non-elected bull$hit shoveler like Liz gets a forum is beyond comprehension .
Wingnut welfare at it's worst , as she seems to have no other gainful employment. Come on Liz accomplish something with your life.
Great kid you've raised there, Dick. Party before Country, Money before Party, just like you.
Wingnut welfare, lolz. Truly Christian charity going on here!
Why is she on? Doesn't the name Cheney mean anything to you? All that wisdom she has because she's Dick's daughter!
@samcdc she gets the time at the expense of people would could make sense of this simply because their is no one on the right willing to give a straight, truthful answer in this campaign. No one with sense, even Romney himself, can tell the GOP's story without smiling or giggling.
The TV news organizations seem to have this belief that expertise is genetic -- look at the promotion of Luke Russert, for example. It's pretty weird, considering that even their top hosts, with few exceptions, got their jobs by actually working in the field, not by inheriting them.
Kabuki
a form of traditional Japanese drama with highly stylized song, mime, and dance, using exaggerated gestures and body movements to express emotions, and including historical plays, domestic dramas, and dance pieces.
Soap Opera
a television or radio drama series dealing typically with daily events in the lives of the same group of characters.
Sunday Talk Show
See above.
Liz Cheney lives in a cloud of self-righteous smug. People like that are simply not to be trusted or listened to.
I think it comes from sitting next to Krauthammer and Kristol for so many years. That kind of company would turn anybody into a jerk.
I don't know why anyone is surprised; the Cheney family lost me at WMD, and that was a long time ago......
With what we've been hearing from the Far Right bullies lately, I am of the mind to stand up and say shut your pie holes!
I'll wait til November and vote against every Republican branded candidate on my ballot to tell them such a message! I just hope majorities in every district will do the same. -Kevo
Now your talking!
Right on cue, the GOP Standard Litany of Excuses, that unchanging verbal defense dragged out to cover all situations, no matter what any Republican says or does on any given day. The same self-defense, the same self-justifications, the same rhetoric to cover all occasions.
Just once, could someone with some ballz tell a Republican talking head: No More Excuses!
This is just another example of the GOP ignoring reality and trying to replace it with 'intelligent design'. Unfortunately they could not find someone intelligent to be spokesman for their revisionist history.
Not to mention, Russia's not an enemy of ours anymore. The Cold War has been over, and the USSR disbanded, for a couple of decades now. No matter how much the neocons miss it.
So is Czechoslovakia, like, the opposite of Poland?
I find it best to put my brain in gear before engaging my mouth.
Why is it that many conservatives never feel out of their league? They never seem to do their home work or investigate subjects that they know nothing about. I find it offensive.
If you had the money, like Ms. Cheney, wouldn't you do some background fact checks or at least hire someone to bring you up to speed on what you were about to talk about on national TV?
They feel no embarresment or shame.
I found this gem hysterical: Sarah Palin replying to Sen. John Kerry's comment about her at the DNC, on Fox last week..."why does John Kerry even know my name, I'm a little nobody?"
A Vice Presidential Candidate!! ..."why does he even know my name?"
Oops, wrong place...
All Liz's daddy ever wanted was confrontation after confrontation. And now his offspring preach's the same thing.I wonder if she has a hole in her back as any wooden dummy does? All one can say is her father is one damn good ventriloquist, and she's a"chip" off the old block.
Because we should totally care what a person whose national security experience consists of being spawned at just the right time to keep her chickenhawk father out of Vietnam says about national security.
Liz Cheney: living proof that conservatives will never have the support of smart people.
Great . . . another generation of Cheneys to contend with.
They make a lot of money from war (Halliburton), so they will do all they can to keep one going at all times -- an objective best achieved if Romney is elected. He apparently wants to fight everybody . . . not personally, of course.
The four sentences Steve quoted comprise a Gish Gallop. What is so impressive about this particular gallop into the wingnut alternate universe is how densely packed it is. It almost certainly sets a record for quantity of unreality per word and, you have to admit, that is remarkable given the amount of competition Cheney's fellow wingnut ignoramuses give her. It's as if someone sat down and wrote: "2+2=5, blue is red, up is down, down is up, square is circle, dog is cat, sky is green, sun rises in West, Earth is center of universe, supply-side economics empirically verified, true is false, ..."
War is Peace
Freedom is Slavery
Ignorance is Strength
It's happening right here. Right now.
I would so dig a mass-media outlet calling this beeyautch out on her horse-hockey instead of only Steve Benen and a few others on the internetz. She is the hell-spawn of a con-artist who should have been hanged already for war crimes (if I may be direct, not Liz of course but her Dick father!) internationally, presumably in Czechoslovakia! I am so tired of Republican horse-@!$%#..
Any wonder why during his reign of terror, the Bush regime was one of the most hated in modern history! I worked in Saudi Arabia for 11 years and went around the world 4 times,I found that most people didn't hate Americans they hated the bush/cheney cabal!! I got SO tired of trying to answer the question of how gwb got into office, that I started dropping into the same refrain over and over(especially after the reelection)I don't know, I didn't vote for him! Imagine mine and the world publics relief when the prez got into office, people couldn't stop congratulating me enough!! To bad the world doesn't have a vote he'd be a shoe in!!!
And you wonder why Obama hasn't been able to accomplish more than he has. It's this type of blind stupidity that's be co-opted as a view from the other side that's made it IMPOSSIBLE to debate valid and important issues. What the right has basically engaged in is a campaign of reckless rhetoric daring the media to challenge them and bog down the folks who actually care by wasting time responding to nonsense. I've said it before, I really find myself pulling for the right just to engage and understand and try to see it from a different point of view so that I have a well-rounded view of the world. But time and time again, these people make it IMPOSSIBLE to take anything they say seriously. It's astonishing and sad. I don't understand what makes the Sunday shows reach out to wingnut fanactics like this to get a differing opinion. You can't debate stupid. You. Just. Can't.
You can't fix stupid either. It just has to be ruthlessly cut out.
What an ideal ticket her and B.Buchannon would make! between them they couldn't light up a matchbox!! Sounds like the ideal rep ticket for today (unelectable, dense and dogmatic but a warm body to sign the billionaires BILLS).
if i believed half the crap the republicans take as holy writ, i'd be the most miserable, most pessimistic person in the world (wait, did i just describe a cheney?). and people wonder why there's no such thing as "conservative humor" this side of pulling wings off butterflies.
What are you guys talking about?! When she grew up she had to live in constant fear that if she didn't hide under her desk and/or bed a nuclear warhead was going to explode over her!!!! Czechoslovakia is the greatest threat to America! It doesn't matter that they absolved in 1993 (now 20 years ago) and became two separate countries and that Russia is no longer a communist nation (or a threat)- all that matters is that they WERE. Only Americans are allowed to forget their past (slavery, genocide, illegal wars, war crimes, etc). So Cheney is right- we MUST continue fighting wars started in the 40's. Otherwise the communists will win (or something)!!!!
#snark
They really need to stop letting just anybody speak to us concerning politics. She has no experience but, she has been briefed well in the art of Republican Deception. Pretty soon people will see that they have all been schooled and are starting to sound like a broken record.
I'm upset that Obama has abandoned the Byzantines just to appease the Ottoman Empire.
Madam Cheney to all former Eastern Bloc countries:
"Alls y'alls lookski the sameski to me." yukety-yuk-yuk
