Last night Rachel declared the space shuttle Endeavour's pass over Tucson at the request of astronaut Mark Kelly the Best New Thing in the World. But it turns out that wasn't the only digression in the space ship's final voyage to the California Science Center in Los Angeles. The local CBS station in L.A. provided a map of the flight plan of the circuitous curtain call, which seem to include everything but a tour of the stars' homes.

That's actually a pretty funny headline.
Why am I suddenly thinking of Family Circus? Cool graphic, Will, thanks!
:D
Hey, who let you in on the new LA Transit map for the Metro trains??
I saw the Endeavor on the back of the 747 at work today around 12:15 pm.She flew straight over head flying pretty low. Then she flew in front of the San Gabriel Mtns and banked again and flew over JPL/NASA. then she flew on inland maybe to Disneyland. Really amazing flying. kudos to the pilot of the 747. It was awesome.
It reminded me of the time when I was in high school and got to tour and sit in the pilot's seat of the shuttlecraft Enterprise. One of the my classmate's father was a Air Force General with connection at NASA. That was as awesome experience as this.
With all the negative things happening in the world these days. Positive news is a breath of fresh air.. The shuttles are one the US's great accomplishments. We should proud that it was viewed by so many on its last flight..
I saw the shuttle on its last 200 feet of flight, as it flew past my studio on final its approach to LAX. PURE AWESOME!!!!
A few years ago I heard on local radio that if you looked toward the western horizon about 20 degrees at a certain time, you would be able to see the shuttle coming into orbit for a brief few seconds.
Guess what? I saw it! It was quite thrilling. It was moving along in a slight arc with its tail end toward the direction of travel. I was really glad I went to look for it.
Almost as good as when I was waiting for the grey whales to go by. They eventually went by and one came into an inlet next to where I was and stuck around to play, I think he might have seen me. Very close to shore. Very thrilling.
Cute. Good example of Obama wasting your money, with fly-arounds.
Mike is not a peach it seems
Sorry you were not able to enjoy such an Americana kind of moment. I live in L.A., it was inspiring and awesome. Imagine if the entire country had your negative attitude, there would be no Smithsonian museums or other reminders of American legacy. Sure, you folks have the amazing rivers of Deliverance to celebrate, but us Angelinos are not used to such excitement...
Just another example of the mindset that has been propogated around spending. We can never spend on anything, according to these "folks". Not even retiring a NASA project.
My generation was weaned on Space Program as a sense of national pride and conservation. Which used to be considered a conservative thing. Now they want to race to the bottom.
I'm glad you saw it Lebowski Dude. I was fortunate to see one return to orbit from space, it was awesome. They had to change the landing because of weather and announced where to look in our area. So cool.
Mike in GA
The Endeavor flyover was not Obama wasting our money. It was funded by private donations through the California Science Center where it will be on permanent display soon.

This reminds me of the cartoon THE FAMILY CIRCUS.....Jeffy takes this same route to the mailbox.
It did a flyover in Sacramento this morning. A fantastic sight. Thousands came out for a glimpse. Lots of proud people awed by the sight of the awesome power of American ingenuity. We did build that @ Mike in Georgia.
wow...that's a lot of gas lol...seriously these ships will be missed... I will be in LA for sure when it goes on display as I never saw a live shuttle launch and always wanted to see one... I hope we have a next generation of NASA that will touch me as the Shuttle program did in my lifetime... Amazing run!
They were trying to draw a picture of a little Schnauser.
I should've gone up to Robber's Peak! Man, I can't believe I missed this when it flew so close by.
I thought it was going to Edwards Air Force Base, not LAX.??!
pauly
It did land at Edwards where it was secured to the top of the 747. Then it left Edwards for its farewell tour. Afterwards it landed at LAX, where it will be for the next month as the route it will take from LAX to the Science Center in Exposition Park is prepared. I heard something like 300 trees need to be removed in order to accommodate the shuttle. She's a big girl!
My bad
The shuttle was secured on top of the 747 way back in Florida.
How much money are they spending on this. Our tax money by any chance? Why do a fly by of everybody that will give them publicity. Go to the museum and see it. Is there going to be a tribute for two lost crews?
See 10.3 I'd say there will be many tributes in the various museums, but why should Americans be denied the chance to see the final flight? How inspiring for a young person to say I want to do something great.
At the end of NASA's '7 minutes of terror' video, it says "DARE MIGHTY THINGS." I couldn't have put it better.
Terry
The flyover was paid for by the California Science Center through private donations apparently not tax payer dollars.

It actually went over the "stars" homes a few time. Those passes north of LAX and west of the Hollywood sign are were the stars live.
I got to see it as it came down the CA coast on the way to Vandenberg. Awesome! So proud to see a great thing that We Built.
My roommate got to see it on his way to work but I had constant vigilance and I don't think it really got near Laguna Canyon and I am both sad and outraged...ITS FROM SPACE
I watched the fly-over at JPL, and I was amazed at the number of people who were gathered there, and at the other locations around L.A. It wasn't so much seeing the Shuttle that was so exciting -- although what was pretty darn exciting. It was seeing people who wanted to come out and be proud of their country, and see an amazing and incredible example of vision and engineering. It was more emotional than I thought it would be.
american excellence! i saw it bank over the hollywood hills, it gave me goosebumps!! F the idiots that think this was a waste of any funds, so narrow minded
Jim
The flyover was paid for through donations to the California Science Center not taxpayer money.
