By way of Boing Boing, which we love, here's the new ad for marriage equality in Maine. The latest polls show just over half of Maine voters support the November referendum to let same-sex couples marry.
“The brotherhood that we have is not the straight fireman’s brotherhood. It’s the fireman’s brotherhood.”

Really misled by the headline. I first thought the guys were against Marriage EQUALITY. I guess because it had the nuances of BROTHERHOOD. At any rate, I am glad that more and more organizations are speaking out on the issue. Marriage is a contract between two people. Actually, it is a vow between two individuals. Even in religious ceremonies, the priests, rabbis, ministers are all witnessed to the vows. It is also a matter of state concern for settlement of property rights, end of life decision making and estate decisions. Hope this issue succeeds. MD has it on the ballot this year.
But, but- what if I am overcome with smoke, and one of them gives me the 'breath of life'? eeeew. . .
(Similar to battlefield blood transfusions during WWII from 'Negroes'.)
Then die! It shouldn't matter, he's trying to save your life, not hump you.
Dan - relax - Day's one of the good guys. Been around here long enough to establish solid progressive cred - and an impressive gift for snark, even if the "sarc tag" does seem to have "fallen off" this post... LOL.
Exactly. I'm certain that was the point Day was trying (sarcastically) to make.
Northern Maine is pretty conservative, but the rest of the state is surprisingly blue (coming from the North I'm always a little surprised by the comparative liberalness of the rest of the state). My old High School only just started a Gay-Straight Alliance group last Spring (much to mine and my friends' shock and joy). It can be a little depressing, but we have a wonderful Yes on 1 movement that has been working non-stop since the original referendum was shot down two years ago. It's close, but for the moment I'm optimistic about its chances.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Maine, though I must admit I wish the point spread was a little larger. For whatever reason, the margin of error for gay marriage votes always turns out to be much bigger than other polling data, so people end up being surprised when the final tally doesn't match the polls. But you can't control that...all you can do is try to maximize turnout and thereby give yourselves the best hope for passage.
Always great to see people speak out against discrimination. Kudos to these firefighters as they show how they are also freedom fighters.
Gawd I lived to see the twenty-first century and yet we are still letting bias and bigotry into our lives.
These guys are making me love both Maine and firefighters even more than I already did. Good for them!
