Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan appeared on stage together in Vandalla, Ohio, yesterday, their first joint appearance in nearly a month. It was an interesting event for a variety of reasons, but let's start with what happened when the presidential hopeful introduced his running mate.
For those who can't watch clips online, when Romney introduced the vice presidential nominee, the crowd started chanting "Ry-an! Ry-an!" Romney interrupted them, hoping instead to hear, "Rom-ney, Ry-an; Rom-ney, Ry-an." It looked as if the candidate's ego was getting the better of him -- Romney wants his name chanted, and he wants it to come first.
The moment helped capture a larger area of concern for the Republican ticket. The New York Times reports today that the campaign will have the two men campaign together with increasing frequency, even though it's inefficient to cover less ground, because aides fear Romney is "not generating enough attention and excitement" on his own.
No wonder Romney didn't like the crowd chanting Ryan's name.
As it turns out, Ryan may not be thrilled, either. Politico's Roger Simon has a column today on the right-wing congressman deciding to "distance himself from the floundering Romney campaign." Ryan has apparently "been marching around his campaign bus, saying things like, 'If Stench calls, take a message' and 'Tell Stench I'm having finger sandwiches with Peggy Noonan and will text him later.'"
The quote is a reference to Craig Robinson, a former political director of the Republican Party of Iowa, telling the New York Times over the weekend, "I hate to say this, but if Ryan wants to run for national office again, he'll probably have to wash the stench of Romney off of him."
In applied terms, Simon's piece went on to note that Ryan no longer likes the directions "dictated by his Romney handlers."
It's quite a presidential campaign, isn't it?
Update: There's apparently some debate about whether Roger Simon's column is satire. I'd just note for context that the piece isn't identified as satire, Simon is a chief political correspondent and not a satirist, and the column is filled with details and anecdotes that are, in fact, accurate. If it is satire, it's awfully tough to tell.

This just goes to prove that Democrats are extremely stupid and will believe anything the press puts out there, even if completely fabricated.
Yes I know you believe the video about Romeny in the room with rich people saying, He doesn't believe in the 47 percent, never happened and was pre-fabricated by a Muslim terrorist in Africa...lol.
FWIW, there is an Update at the end of the article that concedes the possibility that the column is satire:
"Update: There's apparently some debate about whether Roger Simon's column is satire. I'd just note for context that the piece isn't identified as satire, Simon is a chief political correspondent and not a satirist, and the column is filled with details and anecdotes that are, in fact, accurate. If it is satire, it's awfully tough to tell."
Akin is the Stench that will be hard for the Republican Party to rub off if they meaningfully endorse and campaign for him. If drawing on lunatic science and going on about legitimate rape does not make Akin anathema to the Republican party, then the party deserves as vile a reputation as it will get for endorsing and supporting him. The state party, Blunt included, is already contaminated, as are Gingrich and (pehaps) De Mint. Who else will get down into the mud?
I hope that, if it was supposed to be satire, that it comes out soon. I follow Roger Simon on Twitter and he can be funny at times. He also, consistently, live-blogs David Letterman's monologue. He might very well have thought he was being so funny people would figure it out for themselves. I actually hope it was satire. I honestly don't want to think that badly of Ryan, much as I want his political ambitions aborted. Romney's mucking things up and has proven to be clueless, but that feels like it crosses the line into pure meanness.
The new polls from (Fox) reflect the results after adjusted for voter ID...
So every single liberal here who bought in to this obvious SATIRE piece should immediately poke their eyes out and pull their tongues out of their skulls so as to never be able offer their moronic opinions again on subjects that are obviously beyond their comprehension...!
Benen, if you weren't so slanted left the satire might have been a bit more obvious. Do the right thing and admit you made a mistake. Reading the childish comments posted here, piling on to your mistake, is really sad. I'm sure this will insight more of the same. Aren't we all in this together?
Hey Benen, you are dumb, dumb, dumb!!!
Ok, so let me get this right. Roger Simon saying it's satire and fake is not enough to convince you it didn't happen, so you leave your post up as is. You're like the smarmy rich kid in school that doesn't think the rules apply to him. Pull your head out of the sand before someone comes along and stacks potted plants on your arse.
I just can't help myself...
that "chant" thing was so many kinds of awkward. too funny! he sounded like he was attempting (key word) to teach a group of three year olds how to pronounce these last names. and yes! alliteration!
I almost expect to hear a "Brought to you by the letter R." at the end of that..
It's fun to think of all the different ways the Sesame Street Muppets are better than Mitt. :)

Do a better job checking your facts.
Satire is based, however loosely, on something factual; in this case the fact is that Ryan is much, much more popular with the Republican "base". Trolls can try and spin the responses to this all they want, but they're still unable to refute that!
Note that I didn't say deny.
"Update: There's apparently some debate about whether Roger Simon's column is satire."
Actually, there's no debate at all. See today's NYT Politics and Government blog:
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/26/column-on-romney-ryan-meant-as-satire-is-taken-as-fact/
This according to columnist Roger Simon: “Some people always don’t get a joke. Judging from my Twitter feed and other anecdotal evidence, an overwhelming number of people got the satire and a some actually thought it was funny.’’
The Maddowblog "Update" on this story needs to be updated.
Good GAWD Mitt! You sounded like a twelve-year-old saying, "No, me. No, me, no me, me, me, me." Every day you and Ann just sound like a couple of crying, whimpering, sniveling, sobbing, bellyaching, whining, moaning, thumb-sucking, lip-quivering, butt-puckering, complaining rich kids. Go drink some bleach.
Are you a simpleton?
"Editor’s note: Progressive readers were confused that this Roger Simon column was satire. Please see Roger’s note at the end … .
"
[Author’s note: Jonathan Swift did not really want Irish people to sell their children for food in 1729; George Orwell did not really want the clocks to strike thirteen in 1984; Paul Ryan, I am sure, calls Mitt Romney something more dignified than “Stench” and Microsoft did not invent PowerPoint as a means to euthanize cattle. At least I am pretty sure Microsoft didn’t.]"
LMAO
I guess this comment thread is dead eh? lol!!
Remember the movie "Pretty Woman"? The Richard Gere character was also a Venture Capitalist who describe himself as "I don't make anything, I don't build anything. I buy companies when they are vulnerable, dismantle them, sell them off and make money." Sounds like Mitt!!! the Gere character hated himself and eventually found some type redemption through Vivian (J.Roberts). Maybe Romney can found some redemption after the election. Showing that clip on the Maddow show would be a real hoot, and drive home who the real prostitute in that show was.
maddow!!! you lying propagandist ---. the crowd was chanting "romney", " romney" and he came forward (mitt), and said, "romney ryan,", "romney ryan". there is real footage of the truth!!! maddow, you know exactly the lie you and your propagandist network is purporting. how do you live with yourselves and how do you socialize with your friends and colleagues knowing you are intentionally lying to the americans and leading them into the demise of america??? you are despicable people. you will fail with your deceit!!!! and i will gladly watch!!! you have degraded women with your sellout to truth, intelligence and integrity. i really get pissed off when women screw up!!!
You're an author, that would be hysterical if it weren't so sad. I've never heard so much hate as I have listening to the republican. Hitler would have been proud.
Propagandist, have you listened to Glen Beck, Bill OReilly and worst of all, Rush Limbaugh. Fools who see conspiracy around every corner. Fear mongers who can only win by scare tactics or dirty tricks.
Republicans know they can only win by cheating, which they proudly tout. i.e.
changing voting times for minorities, intimidating voters.
Lastly I saw that red roundup and the crowd did indeed chant Ryan, Ryan until Mitt jumped in "No, no,no, Romney/Ryan".
Consider this theory, which unfortunately does have historical precedent. Mr. Romney sells, but Mr. Ryan and the Tea Party reactionary right run the federal government.
Think it can't or won't happen? Remember that Mr. Bush sold, while Mr. Cheney and the Neocons (Karl Rove et al) stole the show, and our money. Regrettably, this is the same lot circling around Mr. Romney now. And the thought of it is repulsive. Did I hear someone say "oligarchy?"
"But the larger question is: Who will lead us forward? Can we place our trust in the face of capitalism whose fortune derived through benefit from things that need fixing now? "

I wonder where Paul Ryan got the data that Canadians pay 15% income tax. I WISH !!!
A more accurate number would be 30% for mid income people, no mortgage interest loop holes etc. We pay to keep our country and social services in tact.
As usual Ryan doesn't know what he's talking about. I think the only fact or specific Ryan gave us was that Canada pays 15% taxes.
They also tout that government should be small and not infringe on rights. So what's up with taking away a woman's freedom by denying her health care that is specific to a woman. By Ryan's theory men should also be breaking the law by having a vasectomy, which is probably covered by medical insurance.
Romney/Ryan are a bad joke.
"The Stench?" Maddow, what a big plate of drivel you serve.
