Recognizing that the present system "as is" is unsustainable over time makes one a realist. I hear a message that we need to alter the system if we want to ensure that it is viable for future generations.
At 54, I expect that my benefits will be altered. I'm not willing to kick the can down the road to my kids... are you?
I think the age thing is a gimic, all recipients will be affected no matter what your age, this was just a ploy to get the seniors to still vote for them, but they will be adversely affected also, no matter what your age. The Republicans will destroy Medicaire in an attempt to give the rich and famous more money from tax relief programs designed exclusively for the rich, They are so worried about their money, too bad you can't take it with you when you're gone. You can't run a Country successfully if all you are concerned about is the wealthy and their money.
Sorry, but seriously: eliminate the cap on SS withholding. If you make $108k you pay the exact same amount as those making $10 million, or a $billion for that matter. Lift the cap and the funding problem pretty much goes away.
Rachel:I wonder why the "Job Guy"'s tire ad with all the blue back signs that look like RR signs haven't been mentioned. They are very bold. Grew up in Marin, too.
I am low-income and have been on federal assistance and I would not vote for Obama because my life does depend on it. Anyone with common sense can see what is up with the voter registration hoopla. I am whit and I have always been asked for my ID and had to sign next to my name in the registration book next to my printed name. Anyone can register to vote and anyone can get an ID if they wanted to, does not matter if you are poor or not. If someone was trying to let people who are not actually citizens of this country vote, then I guess they would have a problem with showing ID's to vote. What they are saying is that I, as a citizen of LA can go to PA and vote with no problem. How can you realistically expect to vote for president of a country in which you are not a citizen. I don't think I would be allowed to vote in Canada if I went there during an election. Bottom line is you should not be allowed to vote if you cannot prove you are a citizen of that state or this country.
So, you aren't going to vote for Obama because the GOP are trying to rush through voter ID laws ... not "please have photo ID" but "you must have a specific card that is specifically for VOTING only, no other photo ID is acceptable" that state-level GOP officials have publicly declared will "deliver the state to Mitt Romney. Done". Interesting.
You are going to vote for the very guy who has said that you, being on federal assistance, are a moocher and take no responsibility for your life. You're going to vote for THAT guy? Best of luck with that.
Why should you have to prove citizenship? You present the premise, but do not verify or explain why this is a necessity. Why should we assume that citizenship is not incumbent on the person trying to vote and how does this not violate the US Constitution? What is the harm if non-citizens vote? You can't just make assertion X or Y and then assume that the danger is implicit. Quite honestly unless you're a xenophobe and have trouble with statistics there isn't a logical assumption to conclude about the threat of a foreign national voting. And this is especially so when you will risk taking away the vote from legal US citizens and wasting millions of tax payer money to implement said law in order to stop the one or two random people who might have voted who were non-citizens.
Common sense says that voter ID is a complete waste of government funds and is an abuse of the system. I am sick and tired of people talking about spending this and government inefficacy that and then they turn around and advocate for voter ID. Hello? YOU are proposing a wasteful law that will only lead to fraud and abuse. Logic would dictate that if your problem is waste, fraud, and abuse you wouldn't create laws that create this problem. It's just insane.
I think people who show up on this board and post on the first day they register -- which usually ends up being the first and only post they ever make here -- should have to show their ID. Could be interesting...
Sharyn, we had 4 years to implement voter ID laws. All of a sudden, it's a priority now, over all the other serious issues these states face? I don't disagree with your reasoning, but you can't see any problem with the hurried timing?
And in the end which party was actually caught at that voter fraud, Republicans. Will your indignation over that turn you from Romney?
Best of luck to you, it's been interesting hearing your views.
Just a word about the resurrected Obama/Wright video of 2007: What we see demonstated by Barack Obama in this video is not dishonorable nor is a foreign concept to people of any ethnicity, class or culture of this world. To varying degrees, we ALL speak differently or "adjust our swagger" to fit the context of different settings. I know white southerners who use accent-less "proper" speech in certain settings and a thick drawl in other settings. Some settings call for a much more earthy manner, as opposed to other settings where a more formal and "proper" speech approach seems more in order. I feel that a wise communicator knows when it's fitting to convey the message that "I'm not too full of myself and I can relate to you" and when to convey the message that "I am not a fool, but a well-educated, well-informed and well-disciplined person". This is a wisdom I've found severely lacking in most of the Republican politicians I've witnessed in this election season....their presidential and vice-presidential candidates not excluded.
When I talk to anyone from New Jersey or New York, my accent comes right back, I don't notice it until someone points it out to me. To even suggest that there is some point to be made because of this is ludicrous. What fox is trying to do is to get the rascists all fired up again. that is their only hope now. Why don't they just come out and admit it, everyone knows they are. It's hard to imagine that we still live in a society where there is prejudice, they need to be called out for what they're doing, too many people have fought and died for human rights. Fox needs to stop promoting rascism. It reflects how ignorant and shallow they really are.
I absolutely agree with you here. I'm impressed and delighted that Rachel correctly highlighted the parts of the so called report that were offensive. The mention of rhythm, of anger, of the accent and of basketball. I think it would have been much more honorable for the Republican Party, or at least those in support of this type of attack, to just come out and say it. Just come out and stand proud and say, "Um. Hello Americans who are secretly afraid of black men ... listen to this guy! Don't forget he's really black!" It's playing to the same field where people throw the "Muslim" and "Socialist" ball around. It's catering to people's fear in a not so subtle way. The video itself isn't damaging, but the way they are using the video is. It's disgusting, really. And terribly, terribly sad.
Ryan is a taker since much of his money comes from the Federal Government. He went to school on Social Security Survival benefits. WHAT A HYPOCRITE!!

LIFT THE CAP!

If Mit romney's religion is not touchable, why are they digging up President Obama's former pastor. Just hateful bunch of people

I wonder why noone has mentioned the "Dirty Job Guy"'s tire ad that has lots of blue and white back signs in the ad. Look like RR campaign signs.
sedwinmars will sure have something to say about this. I am waiting for the post.

Here, here.
Vote early, vote often.

Chow led drama.... Hope they don't institute IQ tests for voting....
Sharyn, please get clued in. You are seriously confused or misinformed.

You are correct. Explain again why you said you will not vote for Obama?

I was focused on the message that implied that "the government short-changed you" (as in the group that he was addressing).
well, didn't they?
