One of the main criticisms I've seen of President Obama's debate performance -- which, again, has nothing to do with substance and everything to do with style -- was how timid he seemed. There was no fire, no engagement, no aggressiveness. The president was calm, the argument goes, to the point of detachment.
A half-day later, Obama spoke to supporters in Denver and showed the fiery side that clearly wasn't on display on stage last night.
For those who can't watch clips online, of particular interest were these comments:
"Now, last night, we had our first debate. And when I got on stage, I met a very spirited fellow who claimed to be Mitt Romney. But it couldn't have been Mitt Romney -- because the real Mitt Romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy. But the fellow on stage last night said he didn't know anything about that.
"The real Mitt Romney said we don't need any more teachers in our classrooms. But the fellow on stage last night said he loves teachers -- can't get enough of 'em.
"The Mitt Romney we all know invested in companies that were called "pioneers" of outsourcing jobs to other countries. But the guy on stage last night, he said he's never heard of tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. He said if that's true, he must need a new accountant. Now we know for sure it wasn't the real Mitt Romney -- because he seems to be doing just fine with the accountant he has.
"You see, the man on stage last night – he doesn't want to be held accountable for what the real Mitt Romney's been saying for the last year. And that's because he knows full well that we don't want what he's been selling for the last year. Governor Romney may dance around his positions, but if you want to be President, you owe the American people the truth.
"So here's the truth: Governor Romney cannot pay for his $5 trillion tax plan without blowing up the deficit or sticking it to the middle class. And we can't afford to go down that road again. We can't afford another round of budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy. We can't afford to gut our investments in education or clean energy or research and technology. We can't afford to rollback regulations on Wall Street banks or big oil companies or insurance companies. We cannot afford to double down on the same top-down economic policies that got us into this mess. That's not a plan to create jobs. That's not a plan to grow the economy. That's not a change -- that is a relapse.
"Denver, we've been there, we've tried it, and we are not going back. We are going forward."
He also openly mocked Romney's call to cut off PBS: "Thank goodness somebody is finally getting tough on Big Bird."
If you're thinking, "Where was this guy last night?" I think it's fair to say a lot of Obama supporters are asking that same question. But I also believe the president sees the debate as a mistake -- one that he intends to correct.

President Obama set up Romney by letting him rant on with
his lies. Not once did Romney answer of
the question directed at him, but instead can off like a car salesman, (How
much gas to this car get to a gallon) Romney answers: all four tires are good on the highway.
Like all Republican they hide their truth agenda with a
zingy that bear no truth, just more detraction from the truth. Romney gave a great con artist perform, but
what he didn’t give was any answers.
Romney is a fool that didn’t have the slightest clue that
everything he state at the first debate to the American people will come back
and bite his rich snob butt.
Remember it’s not what a person say it’s what they don’t
say, and in Romney case he said nothing that we haven’t heard before. Great perform Romney, too bad the American
public other than your right wings raciest support don’t get it.
I listen to the answer given by the so call narrow
rater. Now that Romney have convince us
that he can act and lie at the same time.
Let see if he can skip over the lies that he told in the first Presidential
debate. The American People heard you
loud and clear telling lie after lie.
Let see you escape those lies during the second debates.
The Emperor's New Clothes....
Willard Mitt Romney has donned a new set of robes and just like the famed children's tale, they are thread bare. Last night Mitt Romney looked all Americans (the President included) in the eye and said, if you can't see how magnificent my non-existent plans are for the country, it is because you are too stupid or unfit in your current positions. President Obama was not his best in that first debate, but we can't only look to him to define what we can and see and hear for ourselves. Mitt Romney has flashed us, time and time again, in these past 18 months on the campaign trail, most notably in that fundraiser behind close doors in the company of his peers. Mr. President, you have my vote and you will always have my vote. In your next tango with the naked Emperor from Bain, don't approach the affair like some squalid bar brawl. Offer him and those of us too cowed, or ashamed to look-- a mirror.
Obama baited him and he fell for it...Obama got him to talk but to go back to the 80's Whers The Beef....?
Obama clear crisp-ish but never the less we know Obama what he stands for what direction he is heading or trying to head in...
Romney ?.... oil corp losing corp welfare news to them...
TOUCHE'
Frankly, I think Mr President is sly as a fox. He let RMoney talk, brag, lie, stick his foot in his mouth & chew. RMoney grew more & more confident, trying to get the President's attention. Our President didn't give him the satisfaction, the farther Willard leaned forward & waved his hands, the less he looked at him with that sarcastic smile I adore.
RMoney got a nasty message from the men who REALLY run the GOP. He went on stage the next day saying just the opposite of what he said, again. He's an empty suit the Republican leaders chose as they guy who will change his stand on everything he believes in to make them happy.
Calling Romney an out right lair is not going to help Obama, the democratic or the msnbc agenda. A lot of people are sick of the left and the right stomping their feet and crying fowl when things don't go their way. Both candidates have done their fair share misinformation . The worst thing about all of this is the way msnbc and it's evil twin fox news spins everyone against each other. Watching these so called news channels can be depressing. The best thing I heard from both candidates is when Romney talked about finding common ground and Obama talked about giving everyone a fair shot. Each side should take their own candidates advice. Save the name calling for the children.
I hate when people say Obama is so dependent on teleprompters. As if no one else uses them. I have no doubt he can give a fine speech without one, no doubt. But I have to ask, is he back on the prompter in this speech?
Why did the team drop the issues which we know Romney lied on, like his role/time at Bain, abortion, taxes, healthcare, etc. The effects of Bain Capital are still being felt, hurting ordinary people. Does he care? We have to let him know we have not forgotten that he has written us, the 47% off! Let's not forget that the US was listed as a "foreign country investment" on his tax return! Where is his allegiance?
Yes, I prefer to have four more years of President Obama; he speaks the truth!
