Romney campaign chairman John Sununu has been a little unhinged in his attacks on President Obama -- and sometimes, more than a little -- and in the wake of last night's debate, the Republican was in rare form with MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell this afternoon.
Note Sununu's particular choice of words: he isn't just condemning the president in a rather classless way, he's using words like "lazy," "incompetent," and "disengaged." Asked if he wanted to take the words back, Sununu used the identical words again.
Sununu also said today, "When you're not that bright you can't get better prepared."
There was a point, not too terribly long ago, when Mitt Romney claimed to be outraged by sleazy, personal attacks, dragging the presidential campaign into the gutter. Given this, should we assume Romney will accept Sununu's resignation today?
Also, putting every other consideration aside, it's hard not to be offended by the casual and baseless smear of the president's intelligence. For years, Sununu and many of those who share his contempt for Obama have tried to make the opposite case: the president is too professorial and bookish, more comfortable at Harvard's faculty lounge than the "real world." Now we're apparently supposed to believe the opposite smear: that the scholarly, Ivy League, law professor president just isn't "bright" enough for the often-buffoonish Sununu's standards.
It's ugly and unnecessary, and given Sununu's routine difficulties with the basics of current events, rather ironic.

Rachel? Et tu Brute? I can see Ed and Chris being unhinged but you are not the typical pundit (usually). Romney did not win. You cannot win a debate on style points alone. In an official debate, say a college debate, the moderators do fact check the debate and the person who submits an argument that is false gets dinged for each lie. Romney told so many lies, the buzzer would have broken. The main point of a debate is making the argument. People, not the pundits see that Romney lied through the whole debate, so he lost. This is what's wrong with the world. How is it that every media outlet, MSNBC included, rightly notes that Romney lied incessantly in the debate, but that he also won? I'm disappointed in you for that Rachel. You sound like the "beltway media" that you rightly rail against from time to time and it makes me sad. You of all people should weight the argument against the so-called win on style points. I thought Romney lost there too. He didn't beat the President, he beat the moderator and he was belligerent. Sorry, Obama won and saying Romney did over and over again just makes you part of the echo chamber that is totally detached from the sentiments of those of us on the ground.
What's so hard to understand about Obama losing a debate. The issue isn't how much you hate Romney, the president preformed poorly. The smartest man in the room wasn't the president at the time of the debate. I'm sure he'll do better next time but it's the presidents fault he lost.
The polls shows he lost and most TV and radio say the same. This isn't a college debate, if the political parties wanted fact checkers they could have agreed to have them. When your favorite sports team looses you dont blame the other team you accept responsibility for your performance. Everyone's makes mistakes, but for whatever reason you forget about it, learn fron your mistakes and go on.
Obama has a big lead in all the swing states and Romney will be lucky if he gets a bump of 3 points fron the debate.
Speaking of which... please stop butchering the language.
Malika, I believe I have seen you on TV.
Sununu - omg what an ass. --- Just keep lying and spreading bs - and maybe the American people will believe you - - -
HA - just like Romney said his sons do... LOL They didn't get it from the sticks!
Are you people all so narrow minded that you don't see how hypocritical the majority of your comments are? The Republicans don't have a monopoly on nasty remarks. I hear just as many from Democrats. And don't you find it a little embarrassing that Romney can speak directly to Obama, but Obama can't look Romney in the eye an challenge him? Obama waits until the next day when Romney can't reply and then he makes his comments. Every single negative claim made on this site regarding the Republican party has a counter-part from Democratic commentators or liberal observers. Each of the candidates spun the facts and data in their favor. The difference is that Obama hasn't made things better, and in fact is making things worse. Romney is yet to be tried.
And Rachel Maddow is the craziest Liberal on television. Where is the real media that presents information and lets the public make a conclusion. Don't any of you really think about things and not just take opinions as fact?
Where are the discriminating voters and open minded residents of the United States? There hasn't been much civil commentary since the debate last night, and the intense response in media is just evidence that people are committed to what they want to believe, not what the facts show.
I wish there was some source for real news out there. Obama was embarassing to say the least and I would hate to have him represent our country out in the world arena of leaders.
Rachel Maddow craziest Liberal on television? Why is that, because she reports all the Republican bloopers? And I think our President has gained quite a bit of respect back for the United States from some of the rest of the world. A better representative of us than W was, and, judging from his London and Israel trips, better than Mittwit!
Okay Clare you haven't got a single fact to back up anything you just said. Rachel Maddow is a Rhodes Scholar.
If you don't know what that is or what it means:
LOOK IT UP.
Rachel fact checks and sources every bit of information she recites on her show. Her reputation is staked on that. And every legitimate, professional journalist in the business knows this and respects her for it; from Katie Couric to Ashleigh Banfield to Soledad O'brien.
This would probably be the wrong place to bash Rachel Maddow-particularly when it's obvious by your broad stroking commentary you don't have a clue.
So, just what was it that Mitt took out of his pocket, threw up on the podium and unfolded. Not likely his handkerchief - he was wearing makeup. Crib notes? No wonder he was so anxious to respond - he had all his talking points written down so he wouldn't pull a Mitt. Or did he? Anybody see that?
This being called Sununu is a total idiot. I am amazed at times when listening to him. THIS man asserting that President Obama is not very bright, coupled with the hint of racism by calling him lazy should definitely make him another factor not to vote for Romney.
Romney's policies are all wrong, but what is worse is who he has carrying his water. Get this vile man as far away from a TV camera as possible. He's not worth our time and energy. First and last post about him from me, more than he deserves!
Sununu, Mitchell and NBC should be ashamed. After 35 years as a viewer of NBC products and properties, for the past 3 years I have only experienced these bigots and bigot-enablers vicariously. Good riddance.
Meede1 said: "Don't be looking for an Etch-A-Sketch for your child or grandchild for the holidays. Romney's campaign bought the total stock in the US. They've Etch-A-Sketched Romney sooooooooooooo many times -- they broke them all"
No he didn't. He just shipped all the etch a sketch jobs to China and the etch a sketches haven't arrived here on the boat yet.

Listen to the introduction of the President comment at the beginning of the Tucson memorial of the Giffords incident by the University of Arizona President, if you have any doubt what manner of person Barrack Obama is.
First, as a Vietnam Vet, Mitt can never get my vote, I do not vote for draft dodgers period!
Secondly, the only thing that really disapointed me was you, Ed, and Chris's childish,
unprofessional behavior after the debate. Kudos to the Rev and the kid for keeping it professional.
Mitt lied throughout the debate, and the only place he did any good was with his base and he had them anyway. The president was presidential and Mitt was not, end of line.
Mitt is the biggest flip flopper in the history of politics and now say's he did not mean the 47% claim he made, anyone who studies human nature can tel you that by the inflection in his voice he meant every word, but the phantom candidate that is Mitt is once again trying to walk back his actual words. Also do we really need a president who constantly doesn't mean what he says?
Oh Gary I totally agree about Chris. Honestly I was like "take a pill, smoke a joint, have a drink -I don't care but for God's sake get a grip and shut up! He was ridiculous!! And it was embarrassing! He acted like he got ripped off! Like he paid to get in to see "RAW" or a real knock down drag out bar room brawl and then nothing happened. He's been walking all over the guests on his show and generally behaving like a complete amateur on a network that touts itself for it's sterling professionalism and flawless fact checking. Who wants to listen to that screaming brat? Not me.
And his behavior was insulting to our President. I'm with Malika. I think ALL of the pundits are completely underestimating O'bama. Go up and read the brilliant comments by "Robinsong" who agrees with me but said it so much more eloquently!
To sum it up, Robinsong says what O'bama did can be taken from the pages of "The Art of War". RobinSong quotes the passages for you that are dead ringers for O'bama's behavior, and certainly makes more sense than "the altitude was too high" or "He must have gotten some bad news" or "Romney was just better and so he won".
O'bama knew exactly how to handle his opponent who's arrogance precedes him. Who's lies are predictable and with whom he so deftly denied his engagement. Do read Robinsong's comments-very well written and a much more intelligent proposal than the President came unprepared. :)
Port-a-John Sununu contributes to the stench.
Sununu is a worthless, washed up, blow-hard. He is well known for making ignorant and baseless statements. Yes, Obama could have done better but it looked like he was taking notes on all of the lies that Robmey was telling to the audience so that he can use this to his advantage during the town hall debate on Oct. 16.
The latest BS coming from the Republican party: NewsMax, republican backed internet website released today the latest video from Weidemer, author of "After Shock" (you can click on it and get a FREE copy of his book After Shock).
In this video, "famed economist" Robert Weidermer predicts a 90% stock market crash, 100% annual inflation, and 50% unemployment by early 2013. Thanks to O'bama he claims in this video.
Now sales of his New York Times best seller were thanks to his accurate predictions of the fall of the housing market and the "after shocks" : crash of the stock market, Goldman Sachs and Lehman debacle and "Great Recession"etc. Doesn't make him an expert. But, of course, this right wing organization funded internet site thinks so, and that it so important for the American people to "be informed" of this upcoming crisis, that they have released this video on their website. Today. Thirty days before the election. Yep-came out today.
I was going to say "unbelievable". But yes - it is believable.
There is NO low these bastards won't sink to.
I would like to know about Ann Romneys comment that if Mitt makes it to the White House she will worry about his mental state saw it on MSNBC
I have a hard time taking this outrage seriously considering how much you liberals loved insulting President Bush's intelligence. Double standards don't make you guys look classy, they just reveal the idiocy of the left.
John Sununu should be lynched. Yes I got the rope!
Only in a racist country like America can a Fool Like John Sununu dare insult an African-American. Hope you choke to death Sununu you fat punk ass.
Sununu is a fat punk. He needs to be beat down.
