Joanne Miller sends this picture from up near the border of northwestern Pennsylvania and New York. She writes:
"This closed-down farm stand, reduced to selling hay and an old Mercedes, believes in a [Romney/Ryan] comeback and that (all) America is against Obama."
In rural America, that may in fact seem true. Tricia sent around a new survey that shows Mitt Romney leading among rural voters by 22 points.
(Seen politics lately where you live? We love that kind of thing. Send evidence.)

Well, those on the right do have an extremely self-serving, self-congratulatory concept of what an "American" is.
Yeah..! And from what i have seen and read, they also hate one another and the Democrat`s too boot..
So these farmers would support the republican agenda to kick out all illegals and mine the border? Surprises me.
Yes. I live in Texas - they hate minorities (women, esp. people of Mexican descent - think all Latinos are poor, uneducated, only speak Spanish and illegal). They will vote GOP even though it is NOT in their best interest. There is a disabled lady in my father's neighborhood who is big time Tea Party. She gets all her money from social security and medicare and has a Romney/Ryan sign in her yard. Texas is bleeding red.
You are right on with the comment that they will vote against their own best interests. I should have thought about this a little more.
Kobol - I've lived in Texas most of my life (except for 1 1/2 years in Mexico City where I graduated from high school) and split my time between Houston and our Hill Country ranch. I have Latino relatives and in-laws and numerous Latino friends who are neither poor nor uneducated. Some are bilingual, others speak only English. You do not describe the Texas that I know.
Of all the things President Obama has had to put up with already and when he has to stand up just to defend himself. I think these undecided voters are really out of touch with all the things that have occurred. The outright racism and discrimination against President Obama. The blatant lies told about President Obama right from these Republicans. And those attempts to even obstruct government and our economy just to make President Obama a one term President from Republicans. President Obama was totally justified in speaking up to expose these lies and deceptions. President Obama won that debate majorly when you know the true facts about everything that has happened. And Romney is a major liar and deceiver just for the stake of power craving, corruption, greed, arrogance, being a hypocrite, and a deceiver. You go President Obama you are doing a great job.
I couldn't agree with you more! One of the undecided voters was just on the Andrea Mitchell show. She was the one who asked about women's issues. She said she is still undecided because neither candidate really said what they would do; instead talked only about what they had already accomplished. She added that she would have to do some more research. 3 weeks before the election???? Give me a break…where have you been? Also listening to the undecided on MSNBC I was astonished…what will it take to get your vote? There is no excuse for this type of ignorance.
Indecisiveness is not an admirable quality. It stinks of avoidance, procrastination and ignorance.
This is the result of four years of failed Obama economics. No wonder folks in rural Penn. are now beginning to sway towards Mitt Romney. This picture IS the Obama Presidnecy in action.
But what would you expect from a President who last night claimed to have known Benghazi was a, "act of terror" on September 12th BUT chased down the producer of a You Tube Video as if a criminal because THAT You Tube video was the cause of the riots and murders. Riots which had NOT even begun until AFTER the Ambassador was murdered.
Obama he is destroying rural America and America in general with his FAILED economic plan and the world by his FAILED Foreign policies.
What is Obama's plan to restore this farm for the future over the next four years? NONE, he has announced NONE. All he said last night was this: "Yes I know it's been rough the last four years". "That's why I want to be re-elected, to give you four more years of NOTHING!" Paraphrased :-)
I see in THIS picture a Bright horizon which promises REAL hope for a future. Blue skies and a silver lining.
Go Mitt Romney! WIN Pennsylvania & blow the top of thing! Romney will help "You rebuild this" because you CAN "build this yourself". Romney will help! Go MITT GO
This part of Pa is Appalachia and has been on hard times for decades before Obama. They are also the epitome of 'low information voters'; a euphamism for not much with it.
IrishPud probably has a secret picture of RawMoney stashed somewhere...a really special picture.
So sad, Pat, still spouting the out of context "build this" nonsense.
Obama did not chase down the producer of the video, and if he is in trouble it is for a parole violation.
Obama is not destroying rural America and he does not have any failed economic plan. The ones who have failed are your republican congress - deliberately sabotaging the economy to make the President look bad.
What is romney's plan to restore this farm over the next four years? More tax cuts, following in the footsteps of Bush's policies, which, by the way, helped cause the mess Obama inherited.
Unless you are one of the rich who will get richer under romney there will be no bright horizon or real hope for the future for you. Indeed, the future will be bleak for 99% of us should romney win.
Please read more on romney; he is not a job creator - he is an opportunistic corporate vampire, sucking money for the investors and leaving the company to die. He cares nothing for you but your vote. Ryan's budget would destroy this country for years to come.
Yes, Robert DuBois, rural America must be filled with low information voters for them to support romney so overwhelmingly; they are the 47% he disdains and yet they will vote for him anyway - could it be that despite that, it is more important to get a white man back in the WH?
PS - The yankees suck and good riddance to them tonight.
Sure , here's the lawn sign, "Bring back real American gravel roads"
aw, patty, still more lies. Still saying your confessions to the priest to excuse yourself of that?
It's so cute to see you and such ignorant people in PA who don't realize who is keeping the farm bill from being passed, the GOP and their lapdogs the tea party.
Pat there is this guy named Wendell Willkie you should look up
It is a delusion to believe a man who says "If you're getting interest from your bank, if you're getting a statement from a mutual fund or any other kind of investment you have, you don't hae to worry about filing taxes on that, because there'll be no taxes for (pause, sputter) on anyone making $200,000 per year or less on your interest, dividends, and capital gains." BECAUSE HE IS ONLY LOOKING OUT FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE MAJOR CAPITAL GAINS LIKE HIMSELF. It is very disheartening to see that you (IrishPat7) would think he cares about anyone who is making less than $50,000 a year through a salary. So does this mean if you make $200,000 or less per investment, dividend or capital gains???? Is he lowering his own taxes???? Because you can have 100 or more investments that make $150,000 or less each???? Listen to it live, and let me know what you hear.
I hear a man saying to the public "I will lower your taxes", turning to his friends nod, nod, wink, wink, "If you have massive investments...that earn you $150,000-199,000 in capital gains/per investment every year."
It is correct I do not pay taxes on the .01% that I earn on my $2,000.00 savings account.......Wake up dude....he is in this for the very wealthy, not the poor, not the middle class, not even the lower upper class.
Many rural communities have very limited viewing options for news but all seem to have Fox.
I live in Rural America - so I always find it fun to read comments about me and my neighbors from folks who most likely do not live here. There's a lot more to this than space available here - but the lack of news in my area is staggering. I do not get any televised local news from anywhere in my state. Every broadcast media outlet is from another state. Most rural Americans get their broadcast television from satellite, not cable so local news has become scarce. Thus, we've resorted to national coverage. Numerous members of Congress have tried and failed to require satellite providers to change how they define "local".
There's more to it, a lot more, but lack of unbiased press is definitely a contributing factor.
The good news? We have an Obama campaign team of volunteers here in the middle of nowhere and we didn't have one in 2008. We're not stupid.
That's funny, so the welfare queens in the "rural" counties think that they want Romney/Ryan - a perfect example of sheeple cutting off their noses to spite their faces! Ignorance isn't bliss it's just ignorance!
I posted a lot of this on another thread but I will write it again here because it's on topic.
I live out in rural Indiana and I wonder about this support for Romney everyday. In a town where the median income is around $33,000 a year I look out my livingroom windows and realize that I live in 47%ville U.S.A and still the people here without question support Romney and seem not to understand what his policies would mean for them.
One of the things I keep finding myself having to explain is food stamps. there are a lot of people here that use them and there are a lot of people who see it as a waste, and I have to explain how those food stamps are not just putting food on the table of the person who is using them but of everyone in this community.
Food stamps are a program administered by the Department of Agriculture (Not HHS as many believe). The program was designed as a way to expand demand in the market so that farmers had a bigger place to sell their crops. Those crops support the farmers, who support the town and therefore the person complaining about food stamps.
I have had to have that conversation several times over the course of this election and I just get sidwase looks and like the people I am explaining this to just can't believe what I am telling them they give me a contempotious sneer and walk off.
These are the same people who have been voting Republican and against their own financial self-interests for a very long time now in the mistaken belief that "This time the Republican plan will work!" despite too much evidence that the same-old policies just don't make it.
That and now with the echo chambers of Faux news and Rush Limbots, they don't get accurate information on which to make complete accurate appraisals of the truth- so you end up with low-information voters like Pat7 up there.
For @!$%#s sake, 62% of those surveyed believed that Mr Romney would be doing a better job of protecting SS than Mr. Obama!
And really, the vote difference is only 60/40, so it isn't as huge of a gap as everybody would want you to think.
They see food stamps as socialism and we can't have that! "Those lazy people should get a job or starve." They think "I work, why can't they and why are my taxes being used to buy their food?" Even though, if they are in the 47%, their taxes aren't going to food stamps.
Another way of stating your point about supporting the town, Dragoon, is that the people using food stamps spend them locally, the grocer will use the money they receive to pay employees and buy produce from farmers. The employees and farmers will use the money they receive to buy goods and services from others and on and on. Trickle up works, trickle down does not.
Seriously? Grocers have not bought produce from local farmers in decade. Food stamps go to a corporate grocery store and yes, they employee locals for low wages - but rural America isn't preserved in the 1950's - Wal-Mart replaced the town grocer years ago.
Yeah, take it from an out of business farm stand selling their car, Rmoney will fix this!
Having grown up in rural PA, I know that racism is rampant. Everyone is sure that any person who has a heritage from other than northern Europe are not worthy of trust, lazy, etc. Of course, the few who have met those people are sure that only those they met are decent people and the "rest" are awful. Heck, there's still a lot of hate for even Catholics up there, so who knows what these poor ignorant people think of a Mormon.
So the guy at the Romney rally is wearing a shirt that says lets put the white back in the white house, Donald Trump says Obama is from Kenya, Dave Lamborn says he is like a tar baby, one of our local republicans says he is a great tap dancer, and before last nights debate disgraced gov. Stanford said that Obama was going to throw a lot of spears. Let me get this right - they say that our first black President is a tap dancing, spear chucking, Kenyan tar baby who doesn't belong in the White
House because he isn't white and Ann Coulter says we are racist for even calling attention to it. excuse me but HOLY SH*T (please note this is a religious term that I use in an attempt to cast our hypocrites).
Ann is just mad because she keeps finding out that the GOP is full of people who are even more guano loco than she is
Ann is angry cause she needs a cheeseburger...
Rachel and staff. Thank you for reporting on rural America. I recommend visiting Lake County Tennessee and looking into the Tiger grant funding for Cates Landing to get a complete view of exactly how dysfunctional and ineffective our government is.
Forget the PA politics - who would even eat sweet corn grown in PA?
Joanne Miller, I grew up in McKean county & lived for a while in Warren county & Jamestown, NY. If you're still paying attention to the discussion, I'd love to know where that is. I have some guesses.....
