Senate candidate Richard Mourdock: pregnancy from rape is something "God intended to happen."
Romney, who endorsed Mourdock, has to respond.
Paul Ryan gives what the campaign bills his "first major policy" speech as running mate today.
Could Romney's presidential hopes depend on one Congressional district in Maine?
The gender gap in paychecks persists.
"Kill list" or "disposition matrix?"
Another kind of backlog at the VA.
A conflict outside a Planned Parenthood clinic in Oregon gets ugly.
It appears the U.S. is drilling, baby, drilling.

1. God apparently intended Mourdock to be an idiot, but did he intend for him to be in government?...2. The AP report on oil production debunks another Romney talking point about POB's energy policy...3. Ryan gets to totally ignore the Ryan budget in his policy speech today. Business as usual in GOTP politics.
I was a criminal lawyer in New Jersey before I retired, and I'm kicking myself for retiring too early and not practicing in Indiana. Who would have thought that an Indiana Republican Teahadists would have advocated for the ultimate defense in a criminal case- It Was God's Will. It's tailor made for the most revolting cases, and better yet, it's impossible to disprove. All I'd have had to do is pick the kind of religious-zealot jurors I used to avoid like the plague, and repeat the mantra "It Was God's Will" loud and often throughout the trial. Keeping a straight face would have been a problem, but only if it was necessary; Pat Robertson's Alfred E. Newman grin comes to mind.
BTW, Shooter, your first point is my point, without the humor or cynicism. Religious zealots of different persuasions hate each other because they're really so much alike.
Many left leaning human rights and women's groups have been denouncing the treatment of women in Muslim countries for decades. Or are Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and NOW really right wing groups and I have just missed it?
This clip followed by Mitt Romney's endowment of Richard Mourdock should be the end of Mitt's campaign
It should be, but it won't be, Mr. Bill.
Here's a mind boggler: wouldn't you agree that in general, if someone agrees with a particular candidate's foreign policy, he votes for that candidate? Do you think that perhaps Mr. Romney is fixin' to vote to re-elect the President?

This is the norm for the Evangelical Tea Party wing of the Republican Party. We laugh but it's not funny these folks really seriously want to pass a law that reads "If s Woman is pregnant due to a rape she should be chained to a gurney and forced to give birth to the rapist baby with no say in the matter and on top of that give that rapist child visitation rights this has been the position of these Rick Santorum, Rick Perry, Steve King, Louie Gohmert and Michelle Bachmann's of the world then when we on the left refer to them as "Wingnuts" it's us that are wrong.
In the State of Kansas the rapist father of a child has the same parental rights as any other father by State law. Yes, it's already happening. Sometimes I hate my State aka Brownbackistan. Our Governor, the Dishonorable Sam Brownback and his Republican State Legislature (may their noses reveal their lies) have done their absolute best to take us back to the Medieval Era.
Unfortunately Mitt could kill someone on national t v and still have a bunch of people vote for him!!
sad, but too true
sad, but seemingly true
And if that person were Obama that Romney shot with a manly type weapon, even more would vote for him, cause then he would get the folks that hate Obama and dislike Romney. The voters that would have voted for Gary Johnson would also vote Romney. In this absurd story that would be a win-win for Mittens.
Seems that the Indiana Senatorial race has made the national news with a "Todd Aiken" like comment from our Teandrethal candidate Mourdock. Hopefully, Mourdock will experience an embarrassing loss on Nov 6th and the Teatards will be relegated the the ash can of electoral history in Indiana. As a Progressive Indiana voter, my only bright spot locally is that Joe Donnelley will be our next Senator.
I hope so Michael, but unfortunately Indiana doesn't normally think or vote that way---I think giving Obama the majority vote in 2008 shook their small town/small thinking world. I live in Bloomington and I'm surprised by the growing endorsement of right wing candidates here---as evidenced by the lawn signs (Had enough yet? Vote Republican) and the imbecilic comments in the "opinion" section of the HT. They might as well rename that section of the paper "...everybody's got one." We used to be a nice little blue island in a sea of red but even those times they are a-changing. I'm pulling for Joe but when that pond scum Mourdock was able to crazy his way to defeating Luger in the primary, I knew that the batsh!t crazy was already entrenched.
I read this, this morning. I find it interesting that the last of the article is about Romney and trying to get court papers unsealed and a gag order removed. Generally that's pretty detrimental to more then one party.

I find it interesting that your entire comment history consists of 2 posts and they both include that link.
Interesting.
Thank you, Heide1, for this link! I certainly found it most interesting and always appreciate links from individuals who are up on the latest news. I do not believe I would have found this, otherwise.
Far more dangerous than Mourdock or Akin is Ted Cruz, -and he is very likely to become the next senator from Texas.
Very interesting profile over at http://www.motherjones.com/
(Brush up on your 10th Amendment- you're going to need it in 2013)
I read this article. I'm sorry but why would it matter that the First Lady "seriously thought about divorcing". This coming from a man who has been divorced twice. Thinking about something and following through are 2 different things. What I want to know
about is the last half of the article about a court case Romney was involved in that the records are sealed and a gag order was issued. Someone did something bad enough that they don't want others to know what it was. Hope it get's unsealed just like his tax records should be.

Rachel, I am reading what the people on your blog are saying. I once again have stopped watching M. Joe who never gives this President any credit, and are rude to people who do, like the editor of the New Yorker on the show this morning who endorsed President Obama. It dates him. If the people of America vote for Romney they will get what they deserve. His record as Governor of Mass alone ought to disqualify him. He is a Coyote, the ultimate shape shifter and trickster.
The scary thing about Mourdouck is that many people (both men AND women) agree with him here in the state. There is a certain segment of the population that here as elsewhere has positively Byzantine views of women and would love to keep us barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen "where we belong". While it pains me to say it, I do believe that Mourdouck will win out over Donnelly. The tea party machinery is powerful in this state and, unfortunately, not many people critically think about the actual issues and policies at stake.
I am reading about the RNC voter fraud investigations. This needs to be talked about much more. Can you do a segment about this apparently wide spread voter 'fraud' being carried out by the RNC?
So if Mourdock things rape is the work of god(his god that is), has anyone asked him if the rapists should given any consequence since they are doing gods work?
Most excellent use of logic!
Somewhere, Gore Vidal is smiling.
I'm reading about the possibility that the Romney campaign is "giddy" with excitement about the election even though the momentum may have declined....which they will not admit. Jonathan Chait in the New York Magazine has an article about the "Bluff"...don't know if it's true. But I wonder....if the President has the Latino vote, the Black vote and the intelligent women's vote...there aren't enough 'old white men' to carry Romney. And I live with an 'old white man' who wouldn't vote for Romney if he were the only person running! Just wondering....
With the exponential progress in science via DNA, wouldn't it be wonderful if men could conceive someday?
So sad that when I voted with an absentee ballot, they have to call to tell you if it was not received in a timely fashion. Our ballot here in Florida was so long and the proposals were confusing. Had to do research and it took time. I must say, i am glad they are making sure that the ballots are received and counted. What does that say about our system? Corrupt? I will always vote and appreciate that they make sure it counts!
Its a good job Romeny has no interest in foreign policy. If he did, he might find out how hugely unpopular he is in the rest of the world, except Pakistan!!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-20008687
Had no idea that Romney was so unpopular overseas. I guess the Pakisantis believe there is a chance that Romney will change the drone policy. But who knows.
Talk about an international backlash. The GOP have lost all foreign policy credibility. To think that Romney believes the USA should just be "tougher", and that will be better.

Good for John Stephens. Great, and respectful, response to a disrespectful tweet.
I seem to remember a certain presidential candidate saying we are not drilling enough?

God as a rapist--good one!
When I first read Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale I thought the antagonist was Christian Fundamentalism. I now realize she was describing a mormon theocracy.
It is difficult to get non-mormons to listen. It is even more difficult to get mormons to listen, my daughter for example with five children to add to world's over population.
She can't see from her proximity that what the master conman, Joseph Smith, set up in his religion is a virtual church sponsored brothel franchise.
Having spent nine months researching such diabolical 'religious ethics' for my book Nine Elevens, I can see clearly now Atwood's prophecies in her other books such as Orik and Crake.
Having a mormon theocracy would be far worse than living under the fundamentalist wing nuts like Aikin and Bob McDonald.
Mendacious Mitt's mendacity is not a flaw. It is the MOReMONey norm (morm). Once truth is shattered reasoning is an impossible process. And, as Orwell came to know, all hope is gone, audacious or not.
So, what I am digesting today, Rachel, is the Zeitgeist documentary, Payback, cleverly done with Atwood writing and her story's real life sources depicted simultaneously on screen.
So, Atwood is my 'woman of the day' winner.

Drift btw is an interminable research project done in a timely manner. Reality just keeps coming at you until you grok that waiting for Utopia may be as grisly as waiting for Godot, but, while you are waiting you don't have to sit. You can be readying your sea legs.
A Maddow masterpiece.

I heard an ad this morning in Ohio about coal miners saying that they were not coerced into attending the Romney event. I found several "news" stories, but I'm not sure about the sources.
