There is no way that Romney will carry Nevada, since it can not be done with less than 25% of the Hispanic vote and that's where he is now.
Many thanks to you, Rachel - and your great staff - for continuing coverage of this outrageous Akin/Mourdock/Ryan/et al story . . .
I am 60. I remember when Roe was passed; I also remember the stories about back-alley & coat-hanger abortions.
I can hardly believe we are talking about this, still/again. I am having Rip VanWinkle moments - did I sleep through the last 40 years? is it really the 21st century?
YES - JUST DO IT, PEOPLE! VOTE DEM!
If you're 60 (I'm 66) you should recall the "good old days" of our youth. Morality was religion-dominated, sex couldn't be discussed, sex before marriage was taboo, especially for the female, and the taboo was enforced by using an out-of-wedlock baby as a scarlet letter, and by the fear of becoming pregnant and giving birth to said scarlet letter.
We're "talking about this still/again" because there's been a resurgence of religious fundamentalism in this country, and the fundamentalists believe that religion, their version of Christianity to be precise, should play a central role in our government, and should be forced on everyone through the laws of the United States and the individual states. The contraception and abortion controversies are part of this bigger conflict.
Fundamentalists choose to believe, or have convinced themselves, that their beliefs are the only valid beliefs, sanctioned by the only true deity. They adopt this position because it helps them deal with their own fears and insecurities, but their major premise produces a sanctimonious and wrathful syllogism: We have the only true way/ anyone who disagrees is not only wrong, but heretical/there's no valid objection to us forcing our theology on everyone. Denying access to contraception and forcing rape/incest victims to bear a resultant child is only a vivid example of this sanctimonious and wrathful view.
Historians and sociologists have noted several such resurgences in our history. They call them "Great Awakenings," but this implies that the resurgence leads to rediscovered truths rather than zealotry and extremism, which is why I prefer "resurgence." It is telling, as well as ironic, that Islam is undergoing a similar resurgence of fundamentalism, and that the Christian fundamentalists and the Islamic fundamentalists hate each other, though they're so much alike (rigid, wrathful, and unmoved by the suffering they cause).
I love the Republican solution to poverty "Go to Church!"
I can certainly understand why no one watches nbc now! I found you by accident & listened for a while. If you are the top rated show here, God help the rest of them. Oh, I'm sorry, y'all don't believe in God!! I have to hand it to you though, this president has lied, had diplomats murdered, driven us so far in debt we will never recover, apologized for the greatest country in the world being great, made more people dependant on gov't than ever & you guys STILL endorse him. I'm not surprised, Hitler, Stalin, Kim Jhong Ill, Castro & other Obama-like leaders had followers who believed in them also. I'm sick of you guys harping on abortion rights. How would you like to lie there & let two people argue over whether you should live or not & you have no say so. That is what is happening. You are KILLING innocent children who you claim to care for. LIFE BEGINS AT CONCEPTION!!!!!
And you have done the GOP proud with all the Fox Lies talking crap. Not one word of truth. The sad part is, you know it. But you can always change channels and get off The Maddow blog. Nobody is forcing you to stay and nobody will miss you when you leave.
Regarding Rachel Maddow's comments about WI: This state was progressive until the 1980s. Since then, WI elected two governors who are extreme right-wingers (Tommy Thompson and Scott Walker, who make Mussolini look like a liberal peacenik in comparison). WI actually took the lead in the nauseating, divisive war against the poor, with help from Bill Clinton. (note: Clinton's social policies were well to the right of even such staunch conservatives as Eisenhower and Nixon, and he remains a favorite among country club liberals today.) Since so many of our industrial jobs were sold out, the quality of life has declined significantly statewide. Many of our family farms have been taken over by the corporate farms. Hostility has proved to be a powerful political tool, and it has been encouraged. Not so coincidentally, we are now also one of the hardest-drinking states in the country.
I think the single best new way of framing the abortion discussion came out of last night's show. The words that struck me -- rang like an alarm bell -- were "forced pregnancy."
That combination of words resonates on a lot of levels. I think it should become the norm.
Right on, paragraf! I think we should just plain stop talking about "abortion" and start calling it what it really is. Forced Pregnancy should be stopped.
I just don't understand why people are not willing to let a woman make a choice. They have turned the phrase into the idea that women will always "choose" to have an abortion - which isn't true. Many, many choose to carry the baby full term. Is it just that they need to have power over someone? Or that they are so sure of their omnipotence that the world needs to bow down to it? Strange folks.
Personhood is in the GOP platform. Any other spin they put on abortion and contraception is a lie.
Rachel, your folks at NBC need to fix the 'share links' for FaceBook. If one now tries to share a video report from the video you no longer get the video title a description of and the video picture, you get the 'Rachel Maddow Show' and that's repeated in the description, don't know if the link goes to the video we wannt to share but that doesn't matter as one can't copy and past what you're trying to share!!!
Are Rachel and Chris Hayes sure that Obama's problems in Wisconsin are just due to organizing? I remember a lot of bitter feelings in Wisconsin when Obama didn't weigh in on labor's side during the Scott Walker decertification of municipal unions, and the White House didn't do anything to help out during the recall. My sense is that a whole lot of people there are not keen on pulling the lever for Obama after being abandoned.
More republican voter fraud and intimidation. Trying to keep minorities away from the polls should make them anxious to vote and to vote Democrat. Thanks republicans-keep up the anti-American crap of voter suppression so we can rid our country of republican officials.
Romney & Ryan hope for big change, sounds great! Look out main street because the
tea party is coming out of the closet and views and values are going to flip. Tax breaks
for the 1% and increases for the 47%.
can someone please point me to the glenn beck link that was shown in the first segment of 10/25 rachel show?
