New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) spoke to NBC's Matt Lauer this morning about the response effort to Hurricane Sandy, and towards the end of the interview, he offered some noteworthy praise for the federal response to the crisis.
Christie offered a fairly detailed assessment of conditions in the Garden State, including the fact that there have been three reported fatalities thus far. But when Lauer asked about the efficacy of the federal response, the governor said it's been "great," noting that he spoke directly to President Obama at midnight and FEMA again this morning. Christie said Obama "has been outstanding."
The governor made similar remarks on CBS, saying, "Cooperation from the president of the United States has been outstanding. He deserves great credit."
What's more, Christie told reporters yesterday that he'd spoken to Obama, "and he told me that if, at any point over the next 48 hours, I was not getting something from the federal government that I should call him directly at the White House and that he was going to be there. And I should just not worry about dealing with anybody else, call him. So I appreciate that call from the president. It was very proactive. And I appreciate that type of leadership."
I think it's fair to say Christie is not a fan of Obama's when it comes to politics and ideology. It's what makes this praise, a week before the election, that much more striking.

I have actually been quite impressed with Gov Christie who has clearly been in charge in his state. And appreciate that he gives the President credit despite their political differences.
Christie is going to get SLAMMED by the right-wing talking heads for this one. HOW DARE HE say something good about Hussein Obama, that Muslim, Kenyan Socialist? Everyone knows that he caused the hurricane in the first place, just to make himself look good late in the race.
Well, well, well... Look who's going to accept federal funds...
Pres. Obama is right. Trust matters. In this election, trust is the number one issue that independent and undecided voters need to deal with.
True to his word, Obama is President not of the Democrats nor of the Republicans, Latinos, Asians, blue state or red state but of the United States of America. He called on Christie (R) to speed up help in New Jersey. President Obama is one you can believe in. And Christie is worth it. He understands the word "gratitude" or "appreciate" and "humility".
New Jersey has an intelligent kind of Republican voters. Unlike Florida, Arizona, especially Alaska with Palin, they don't get easily brainwashed by politicians. They know a good leader and what good leadership is when they see one.
My sense is that Christie had nothing but disdain for the Romneys. At the GOP convention he contradicted Ann Romney when he used the word "respect" instead of Ann's use of the word "love". Did you see Ann's face when he said this? Christie said there are those who are paralyzed by their desire to be loved. What was that all about?
Mitt would say anything to get Ann to the White House. Proof? Watch the 8/26/12 tape of CNBC's "The Making of a Candidate". Just as it was Ann who said Mitt should head the Olympics,(she just really wanted to taste how it feels like to be the First Lady of Massachusetts, perhaps) in this interview, Mitt said, "She is the one who said I ought to do it (to run for President). Now, Ann has her sight on the White House and see how it feels like to be the First Lady of the U.S.A.
This explains why one pundit called Romney "The Reluctant Candidate".
This explains why Mitt would say anything or say something that he seemed to hope would cost him the election. or what one called "self implode"
Mitt Romney does not want to be President. This is all about sweet Ann Romney.
Mitt constantly struggles in telling the truth; the truth is not on his side and vice versa. Somehow the truth is starting to be allergic to Romney; it evades him. When he he insists he is the job creator, unemployment went down from 8 to 7%. They claimed someone is cooking the books to help Obama win this election. When Romney said manufacturing and construction industry is worse the past four years, Sandy came along. There will now be jobs because of repairs and new construction that needs to be done brought about by Sandy.
Mr. Romney, you would be better off if you would just take comfort in embracing the truth as it come along or as it happens.
