The irony is, as recently as August, General Motors and Chrysler desperately wanted to be left out of the 2012 political debate. Indeed, both manufacturers, saved from collapse by President Obama's policy, didn't even want the candidates making campaign stops at their plants.
But Mitt Romney didn't leave them with much of a choice. He forced the companies to intervene.
The Republican lied about Chrysler moving Jeep production to China. After learning the truth, Romney turned the lie into a television ad. Reminded of the truth, he expanded the ad buy. Told once more that he was lying, Romney created an insanely dishonest radio ad on the same subject.
Yesterday, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne felt it necessary to tell his employees that Romney's lying. Soon after, General Motors did the same thing.
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has broadened his attack on President Barack Obama's auto industry restructuring, implying that General Motors used the aid to hire more workers in China than in the U.S. [...]
"We've clearly entered some parallel universe during these last few days," GM spokesman Greg Martin said. "No amount of campaign politics at its cynical worst will diminish our record of creating jobs in the U.S. and repatriating profits back to this country."
Look, I understand why Romney's lying. When the American auto industry was on the brink of collapse, President Obama stepped up with a rescue plan, and Romney insisted the plan would fail. Romney was wrong; Obama was right. In states like Ohio and Michigan, few issues matter more -- hundreds of thousands of jobs were on the line.
Romney has run out of ways to explain his failure, so he's lashing out with demonstrable falsehoods. The Republican knows the claims aren't true, and he's aware of the fact that knowledgeable people realize he's lying, but Romney assumes regular folks are fools, and won't know the difference. If he wins, the ends will justify the means.

He doesn't know the truth because he's only listening to media outlets like FOX who are reinforcing misinformation. That's why FOX exists, and that's how it works. His handlers certainly know truth from fiction, but have calculated it's statistically in their best interests to live the lie.

It seems the papers in FL will publish any letter no matter how outlandish - personally I am amused by them, but I wish their editors would be more responsible - the letters are only fact-checked by other readers who care to respond and then it will be several days later when the response is printed (kind of like when Romney lies and the campaign walks it back a day later). One reader decried Obama as a Muslim saying his birth certificate was fake and she had, I'm not making this up, in hand, his elementary school application showing he was from Indonesia and his religion was Islam. She probably believes the Obama birth video. As far as the Orlando Sentinel, I wonder who owns them - Murdoch? Bain? How any responsible paper, knowing the lies and doomed to fail proposed policies, could ever endorse Romney is beyond me, so I assume their ownership is biased.

Brewer Patroit, my local paper endorsed Romney because they were "disappointed" that President Obama passed health care reform without bipartisan support. They were further "disappointed" that he put the effort into health care instead of the economy.
They made a big deal of reminding everyone that they had endorsed POTUS in 2008, but were now "disappointed" in his actions. Sheesh!

Thirty-eight years ago, americans turned their backs on a man who was exposed as a serial liar, after having re-elected him in a landslide. Granted, crimes had been committed which spawned many of the lies. But that's who we were then as a nation.
Now, we have a man whose entire campaign for the presidency has been based on lies. He is comfortable in the knowledge that his party's members will vote for him no matter what he says, out of their hatred for President Obama. And he is counting on the low-information voters not to know the truth and vote for him based on appearance and performance.
And the media, in large part, have given up trying to police the matter and just focus on the horse-race aspect.

For the past some years we the people have let this happen because we let the media get by with a politically correct approach by saying, "both sides do it"instead of holding candidates accountable and as Americans voting against our own self interests just by thinking a new President will change things for the better because the one we have hasn't improved things fast enough to suit us. We as citizens should control what we can, and not blame government if we can't find a new job. If you are working and you see you are approaching 50 years old it might be wise to take some night courses to get better training for the global economy, not wait until you are fired. Humans always think that things are going to always be a certain way but one thing in life you can count on is - change.
If Romney wins, any chance of honest discourse based on some agreement of "the facts" will be gone. Why would any candidate bother to debate the facts when it's much easier to create your own reality and just run with it. It's not like the media is going to call you on it and, as demonstrated if Mitt wins, there aren't enough voters paying attention to notice or care.

Perhaps no politician in the last 200 years has done more to disqualify himself as a Presidental candidate than Mitt Romney. That he is close is an indictment of the modern mainstream media's refusal to move beyond the horse race that makes them rich.
I just saw a video headline in the column next to this comment thread. It asks "Is Romney serious about defunding FEMA?" That is a fair question but since he flip flops on everything all the time the better question might be "is Romney serious about anything?" The man lacks core convictions.

GM closed up more than 1/2 of their plants and moved the jobs to Mexico and China well before Obama bailed out the unions. So it really didn't matter much either way to us in Ohio. Most of the GM workers in Dayton are working for Lowes now.

I've been around the track a few times and I have never seen a presidential election where one party used such nefarious tactics, including selling its soul to the Devil, to get their candidate elected.
