Tonight's guests:
- New Jersey Congressman Frank Pallone, represents New Jersey's sixth congressional district, a shoreline district fronting both New York harbor and the Atlantic Ocean
- Ric Burns, documentary filmmaker
And here's executive producer Bill Wolff with a preview of what's in store:

I had a very bad night. I dreamed I had voted for some guy named Christie and liked it ? ?
Good one for Halloween.
I just came upon an article from Salon.com indicating that Mitt Romney could have prevented the current deadly meningitis outbreak while governor of Massachusetts. Apparently, he told regulators to keep "hands off" when they tried to punish New England Compounding Company for failing to meet industry standards.
Here's the link:
http://www.salon.com/2012/10/30/romneys_lax_regulation_fueled_meningitis_outbreak/
Dear TRMS, Your lead story really sucks. Oh crap, you have to do real news all the time.
yo Rachel you missed that mitt said nov. 7 that is a wed. the 6 is tue
I don't think Willard made a mistake. I think he meant the day after the election the country shall feel encouraged in the reelection of an outstanding, serious leader, shall feel pride in putting our country first, and shall rally as one nation to work together to continue our successful journey forward.
I just sent the Romney folk the secret plan. My Bad ?
So anyway My idea is: to get on a yacht and push some poor folk off the back while underway. Did I miss something ? Vote Romney, cut your own rope. No very Ayn Rand if you ask me .
Rachel mentioned Reince Priebus's encouraging Romney/Ryan rally attendees to "Fire Obama." Large blue signs popped up near Myrtle Beach, SC today offerring the same message. Although hardly surprising in this area, seems to me a last ditch"silly season" desperation during the final week of the campaign. So lame.
Dear Ms. Rachel and Illustrious Crew,
Thank you for having Ric Burns on this evening.
Thank you for recognizing the True and very Real Insights and Learned Lessons all of We the People should be getting from Hurricane Sandy's emergence due to today's burgeoning Climate Changes globally, and her devastating Aftermaths (She's not quite finished yet in the Inlands).
MSNBC did a good deed putting all of y'all, and your other compatriots throughout the days and evenings, together.
Intelligence, Insightfulness and as much Truth-Telling as possible is greatly Needed in Today's Shallow Waters. We all Need to Seek our Individual and Collective Truths from Deeper Waters.
Y'all are Work Well Done.
13 deleted, Sadfor you sharing how they threw up on their 'entire office' upon seeing 'Mandow'. Banned, flameout.
So childish.
@MSNBCRachel @MSNBCRachel your show is remarkable. I say that with complete sarcasm. You have contradicted yourself numerous times.
First: referred to people donating canned food as "Red Cross doesn't want your OLD can food. Maybe not a contradiction, but a purely insensitive remark.
Second: suggesting that Mitt supporters should give him cash and at the same time stating it would not be a good photo op. I would love to see where all the donated goods such as water and "Old Canned Food" as you suggest ends up. Show me a pile of unused, donated goods and maybe you will have my attention. You would be the FIRST to show a picture showing folks giving Mitt cash or checks for donations and twist it to make it look bad for him.
Third: referring to having to donate something to see him in line. Obama has dinners that cost thousands of dollars ( as other prez's have) to sit down with him and those funds do nothing to help those in need.
Fourth: the National Guard is here. What a joke for you to even suggest that everything is in full recovery mode when there are still situations that have not been figured out. I know your angle here.
Lastly, in one week, you are looking at not only a Republican President, but a Controlled House as well as a good shot at taking the Senate. When this happens, the responsibility will be on the GOP to fix everything and you will be able to enjoy this all from the sidelines. Enjoy, the 30 day ratings bump that you might be experiencing (depending on where your ratings started from in the first place) and then look to others to see an intellectual and balanced approach.
If President Obama somehow gets a second term, I will take all the criticism you can dish out.
Ed the red cross can't use that. It takes people away from meaningful tasks because they have to wash, repackage etc. The Red Cross said they didn't want the stuff. And it was totally phony, they went and bought 5,000 dollars worth of stuff for people to give on camera, that came without. Just like Ryan did with his phony photo OP at the soup kitchen where he did nothing but barge in and pretend to wash a clean pan and get his picture taken. How do you not see the insincerity of these two men?
Again, show me that these donated goods will go unused.
went and bought 5,000 dollars worth of stuff for people to give on camera,
Who said that? Let me guess.......Maddow!!!!!!!
"Who said that? "
Workers at Walmart.
so no longer have to guess.
Geez Ed. Nowhere today have I heard anyone say "OLD" in reference to the donated cans of food, until now, from you. ... umm. Exactly how often (and when) do you clean your pantry out?
As far as recovery, if you haven't ever been involved in recovery efforts, I must tell you it can take awhile. The preservation of life and health is priority. Then utilities, clean up, land rehab, and infrastructure evaluation/stabilization. Then some serious planning for area revitalization and future development.
Oh Ed, you should stop watching fox, with all of their false "facts". Boy are you misinformed. I hope you don't spiral into a terrible depression when we win the majority and the presidency.
lock. Your opening sentance take away any credibility you might have had. You can't even find the right blog to bad mouth Ed. Shows how incompentant you are. This happens to be "themaddowblog". I believe you are looking for Ed's blog. Must be all that Fox Lies BS filling your brain.
Larry, I'm thinking you have completely misunderstood my post and what I'm all about. But that's ok. Have at it if you feel inclined.
Umm I think the term contradiction doesn't mean what you think it means. Or if it does you have failed to show a contradiction. What of your 4 points shows a contradiction in what Rachel said?
....the red cross typically asks that you do not donate food, but instead donate cash or volunteer your time. Blood donations are also popular
Your thoughts here seem incoherent. The Red Cross specifically stated that it did not want canned food or other physical items being donated because it does not know how to disperse these items. The Romney Administration bought physical items because they wanted to be able to display those items for a photo op. You would not really be able to do this with a check. If Romney were to pose in front of a person handing him a check that would leave that person's privacy into question (not a good idea). He could stand up in front of the crowd with a giant check at the end of the drive, but unfortunately it takes some time to have those made up and of course that would've conflicted with the campaign event. So, in other words, the campaign feigned support collecting items that are unwanted or unnecessary in order to make sure they had something to display for the cameras. That's not exactly the most eloquent way of helping with relief effort. No one was giving Mitt relief checks so I have no idea what your last sentence is attempting to make the point of: her argument was that if people had given Romney relief checks it would have looked better for the candidate, not worse. I don't know if you just misunderstood this or what the deal is.
Red herring. Rachel's argument was that people had to wait in line to donate goods for the relief effort which has nothing to do with President Obama or with the dinners he has held. These two subjects are entirely unrelated.
I'm curious what is her angle? The National Guard being present means that full recovery mode is in effect. That's the active tense- this means that it's ongoing at the moment. Someone saying "recovery efforts are underway" is NOT arguing that the situation has been resolved. They are arguing that there is someone responding to the situation TO resolve it. Understand the difference? You've completely strawmanned her argument here.
Your last paragraph is rather perplexing. So you could not understand that there is a future tense and a present tense....until your next paragraph when you are now predicting what will happen after the election??? Now see that is an example of a contradiction. You said one thing one paragraph and then immediately redacted it the next paragraph.
Wow...Romney's campaign is really horrible...they went and bought $5,000 to give away to the relief effort. They should be thrown in jail for trying to help others. Obviously, it is much better to do it the Obama way and have the donations go through his banking account.
I wonder why Obama might want to do it that way? Could it be that his agenda is two fold...1)Direct more people to his website in order to politicize the entire disaster. 2) Earn interest on the money before it is forwarded on the Red Cross.
I give them credit for living up to Rahm's famous quote..."Never let a good crisis go to waste"
just saying...
Leave it to capt re reg to ignore everything and then make up his own story to comment on. Here is a clue capt re reg, robme said he was collecting for the red cross the red cross said that they have no use for what robme was collecting. Once again robme shows he has no interest in dealing with disasters anymore then you show. With you that is understandable for someone wanting to be president that is stupidity.
I am writing this as a simple message to everyone doing a political program. This includes Rachel Maddow. Every time you put on a republican I change channels. I don't want to hear any of their verbal trash. I have simply ceased to associate with friends or acquaintances that are of the republican persuasion. I don't expect this to change in this life time.
You may assure yourself that if you have written a republican friendly comment, I will skim and skip it. The right wing can no longer be convinced by fact or logic. Its like being in a mental hospital. They are people lost to mankind.
Right on Raymond. no matter how many clips of these idiots saying things you give them, they don't care. They just go on saying the same falsehood they just said even though you just proved them wrong. Showed them. It's like their brains are surrounded by cement or taken over by a parasite or something where facts just don't penetrate. How much proof do they need. We had 8 years of Bush and 4 more years of his tax policies, which Obama was forced to allow, in order to get what he wanted. So that's 12 years that the so called job creators have been paying the lowest taxes ever in history so where are all of the jobs? We should have more jobs than people needing them. We don't so that is proof that lower tax rates does not create jobs. Romney wants to lower them even more. On the other hand we have years of evidence that the taxes Obama wants were in place during record job growth. You think they see that? NO!
where are all of the jobs?
According to Obama we have had 25 months of job growth.
Either Obama is a liar or trickle is back to working again.
Here's a note to DawnCT. I see your brain works. Let me suggest a British writer to you. The volume is "The Spirit Level" by Prichett and Wilkinson. You will like it better by the subtitle. It is "Evidence Based politics". Wilkinson is an epidemiologist. Its dull. Its boring. Its technical. Its statistical. Its almost irrefutable. It puts solid evidence behind all of those things that you felt were right but just couldn't prove scientifically. When you finish you will understand why the right wing is fighting science. Science is beginning to demonstrate 'scientifically' that they are wrong. Yes, you are right; they are wrong.
Raymond they think because there was an Ice age, and we have had bad weather before that it is the same thing as this extreme, increasingly frequent extreme weather. It's like saying pollution isn't bad. It's common sense to me, but I don't have to rely on my own common sense, 98% of scientists say it's happening and it's really bad because we've been ignoring the problem. The 2% that don't agree are in the pocket of the Koch brothers and others like them.
98% of scientists say it's happening
Fiction!!!
Walt. You know not what your talking about in either post. Obama has not said 25 months, it's 44 months, and the reports come from the Labor dept not Obama. Climate change is real. Sorry your side hates and disbelieves science.
To Raymond>> So sad. That is the exact mentality that has this country "Begging" for new leadership, creativity and vision. The country is not looking for the same old caveman mentality of the Libs. Enjoy, the next 4 years because 55% of the Republicans/Electorate will and all will enjoy the benefits that Romey will bring.
I'm sorry, the libs are cavemen? Aha ha ha ha ha. It is the right wing crazy nut jobs that want to bring us back to the 50's. It's the right wing that has caveman ideas about rape. They want small government unless it's to tell a woman what to do with her body. I think maybe you need a lobotomy Ed. Your brain comprehends things backwards the way someone with dyslexia gets letters mixed up in the wrong order making it hard for them to read. That's all of you (R)'s with facts!
The 50s sound good to me. People were proud to pull their weight and wouldn't have it any other way. The food stamp abusers were few and far between.
And still are. You really need to get news from more than Fox Lies or any other single source. You've proven, by your other comments, what kind of hating clown you are. Very uninformed. Very narrow minded. Very self-centered. Extreamely shallow.
Ugh with the exception of the Great Recession welfare use has been going down, not up since we started keeping track of those records. Secondly the majority of the population works during non recession periods: remember even now we're talking about 93% of the population who are working and only 7% who are not. At the lowest in our history our unemployment has been 4% which means 96% of the country was working. 3% is all we're talking about here: 3%. 3% of this nation are not working right now that could be working, but haven't been able to find a job. That's it.
Funny how the righties always make it sound like the country is divided in 1/2 based on those who work and those who do not want to work which was what a third rate actor who was insane told them in 1980 and not one time did they ever question his lies. Just think they say the bottom 7% broke the country even though they took the least and the 1% who take the most are saints. Then they wonder why they are told they need mental help.
I am waiting for Bush to get blamed for Hurricane Sandy. Instead, MSNBC stopped short and went to a commercial.
You still don't believe GWB started 2 unfunded conflicts, one totally on lies, crashed the economy and spent over $10trillion. You still don't want to see the truth.
I see that there are people writing on here that do not like Rachel. I suggest to them that they just go away. As for you Rachel, I simply have not found flaws. You do a great job. I do watch you regularly. I will watch a commercial on another channel before I will watch your occasional republican. I am not a centrist. Howard Zinn had no use for centrism. Neither do I.
Now I am going to make a suggestion for your show. Review John Paul Bernbach's "Pack of Lies: The 40 most Destructive Conservative Myths in America" Most of what he says you have already covered one place or another. He has one I think you haven't. He catches the misinformation that we have been fed about the national debt. You will notice that an honest reporter will tell you that we owe about 30 or 35% of our foreign debt to China. The right wing then reports that without the qualifiers. They leave out "foreign debt" That make the foreign debt seem more outrageous. In truth our debt owned by China is 7.3% of the total indebtedness. He documents it nicely. Moreover, nearly 3 dollars out of 4 owed is owed to U. S. citizens. Check this out. I think it might be a myth you haven't caught. I found that I knew it but I didn't it have down clearly. He taught me something. I am hard to teach.
yes funny how thats not shown or talked about.
all our foreign own debt is only 10% of it China being the largest then the UK i think have to look that up..
3 dollars out of 4 owed is owed to U. S. citizens.
That's good news. I thought we had 16T in debt.
DAAAAAH!
Thanks to GWB. He took a surpluss, started t 2 wars, mudered over 5000 Americans and spent us into a recession/depression.
The real debt owed is 11trillion, not 16trillion. The 16 trillion figure is a projection of what the estimated debt will be if no changes to employment or policy are made by 2020. Debt that is owed to your own nation, for the record, does not affect inflation and does not cause problems. The only debt that really needs to be worried about is international debt and a good way to fix that is to focus on fixed or tangible assets within our economy. Doing so strengthens the real value of our dollar which allows us to pay off our debt faster.
Economics is fun.
http://www.publicdebt.treas.gov/ is a good place to start.
TODAY $16,204,061,671,104.83 is the public debt
÷into $4,848,576,821,378.81 is INTRAgovernmental debt (Social Security, etc.)
= 29.9 % of debt is owed to itself
As of AUGUST Foreign debt is $5,430,000,000,000:
And so out of $16,015,769,788,215.80 total August foreign-owned debt is 33.9%
China owns $1153.6B or 7.2% This has been decreasing
Japan owns $1121.5B or 7.0% This has been increasing
Oil exporting nations* own $263B or 1.64% This has been increasing
Caribbean Banking Centers** own $256.9B or 1.6% This has been increasing
Brazil owns $253.9B or 1.585% This has been increasing
Switzerland owns $202.2B or 1.26% This has been increasing
Taiwan owns $198B or 1.236% This has been increasing
The UK includung the tax havens of Isle of Man and the Channel Islands own $153.6B or 0.959% This has been increasing
Russia owns $153.3B or 0.957% This has been increasing marginally
Belgium owns $142.6B or 0.89% This has been nearly doubled in the last year
Hong Kong owns $139.6B or 0.872% This has been increasing
Europe's Delaware, Luxembourg owns $131.4B or 0.82% This has been fluctuating quite a bit and the rest are mostly European and American nations in double digit Billions.
So, the truth is we owe Americans or our allies the most by FAR. Bad Jingoism.
* Ecuador, Venezuela, Indonesia, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Gabon, Libya, and Nigeria
** Bahamas, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Netherlands Antilles and Panama Hi Mitt!!
Bush's first fiscal year all his own started 20 days after 9/11/2001 and ten days before we invaded Afghanistan. On October 1, 2001 the debt was $5,806,151,389,190.21
Bush's last fiscal year ended September 30, 2009, the debt was $11,909,829,003,511.75
That's an increase of $6,103,677,614,321.54 or 105% Even if you knock off $400B for Obama's share of the stimulus, that's a 98.2% increase all on Bush's doorstep.
that's a 98.2% increase all on Bush's doorstep.
Thanks
That makes me feel a lot better. Since it was Bush's debt...we don't have to pay it off.
I know it's Halloween, but all these kids came dressed as Repugnicans? Sheesh...
I love your costume today Rachel!
While I get your point about major cities subject to the onslaught of the sea, New Orleans is not right up against it. Not any more than Houston is.
I love this show and your attention to detail, but I hate it when y'all get stuff wrong(ish).
MSNBC be damned for trying to turn Obama's performance with Sandy into a political football. Shame. shame, shame. Everyone can see what is happening and come to their own conclusion (presumably that Obama is a great leader). But MSNBC's trying to turn this into a sword against Romney is just despicable. Romney is a jerk for doing what he did with the food drive thingy. But what MSNBC is doing with this story is far worse. This is a human tragedy you satanic bloodsucking vampire media scumbags.
Or in other words you made up your own reality.
Greg Palast's latest investigative findings should be front page news. http://truth-out.org/news/item/12210-greg-palast-mitt-romneys-bailout-bonanza
