It's been eight days since Mitt Romney first floated his Chrysler/Jeep/China falsehood, which he then doubled and tripled down on, even as industry executives called him out for lying. Unfortunately for the Republican, the story isn't going away.
The New York Times editorialized today, "It's bad enough to be wrong on the policy. It takes an especially dishonest candidate to simply turn up the volume on a lie and keep repeating it." What's more, the Toledo Blade chastised Romney today for "conducting an exercise in deception about auto-industry issues that is remarkable even by the standards of his campaign."
And for its part, the Obama campaign unveiled this new ad this afternoon, noting that Romney's 11th-hour push is based on a fraudulent foundation.
There's a larger significance to spots like these. At the surface, Obama uses messages like these to stay on the offensive while keeping one his strongest issues -- the rescue of the American auto industry -- in the spotlight.
But I also continue to believe the Obama campaign is invested in making "trust" a closing theme of the election, and by getting caught lying so blatantly, Romney is making the president's job easier.

Right. It's heinous for Romney to mislead about Chrysler but not for Obama to leave his people to die in Libya.
Benen, I don't know you live with yourself.
#1 What a ridiculous and hateful statement. What kind of person thinks like that?
.............wait, it is coming to me..............um...............The T-party!
The T-party is the single worst thing that ever happened to this country. We will vote you OUT!
Still trying to go with that lie while ignoring that it was the house republicans as well as Paul lying Ryan that cut the funding for security meaning the blood is on the republicans hands. To bad for you righties we have the republican voting records to prove who has the blood on their hands.
India...,
Consider the source.
Wow - How did those sneaky terrorists make Romney lie so much?
whom....who in the chain of command is saying that lack of funding caused the Bengazhi attack.....was it the same person that started the video rumor?
BTW....Still waiting on those links....you can run but you can't hide.
The surprise will be yours when you find out Romney was lying about the things YOU were counting on. Since he lies about everything, it's a good chance all Republicans will be disappointed. How do you expect anything at all to turn out the way you want, by voting for this guy?
It's considered stupid to repeat the same thing and expect different results. It's also stupid to vote for someone who lies all the time, and expect to get what you want.
I have been seeing this all over Yahoo as well, the Republicans blaming the attacks and the lack of security forces in the embassy on the President and calling it a cover up. I find this interesting because it was George W that said again and again that there was no way any one in his administration could have even conceived using a plane to attack a building like they did on 9/11, and that this was all a problem with the intelligence community. Then there was the presidential briefing that was released showing that they had actually discussed this issue the month previous to the attacks. We are seeing the same kind of thing play out here and I find it interesting how they were so quick to play down the importance of those events and called those who brought them into the light of discussion "unpatriotic", "unamerican" and "the voice of dissension". How quickly they forget. It is amazing that anyone would be criticizing the President since he has been piratically transparent with this whole issue and there hasn't been anything that I have seen in the coverage to indicate a cover up or betrayal.
If Obama has been "piratically transparent" with this whole issue....Why has he not came out with "HIS" timeline and hold a press conference on "HIS" timeline and answer the tough questions ....I understand waiting to find out the whole story ....but Obama knows all the facts about what his timeline was.....Why doesn't Mr. Transparency share that with us and allow us to ask questions?
Shooter,
So you agree with the NY Times that your candidate is a purposeful liar? This is about Romney's lies, don't duck and dodge.
I believe that there may be more tactical issues at hand at the moment that need to be dealt with. I think that the President has kept us apprised of the situation and done a fantastic job of keeping us informed, much better than we have ever been used to form former Republican presidents who have a tendency of keeping the details completely unknown until forced to give up such information. I think that you may also be missing the fact that there is an election, as well as a natural disaster that has just happened, and which of those particular issues would you like him to address first? I think that the information from the actual events in Benghazi will be brought to light as they become available and necessary for us to know, meaning when they are no further tactical benefit. I think that you also forget that the President has cultivated a feeling of trust with the American people, unlike Gov. Romney who has lied about some of the unimportant things in the campaign not to mention the actual issues we should be focused on. I haven't heard of anything that has completely discounted what the President has said like they have with him. I trust the President and as an American and a patriot, so should you.
And why doesn't Mitt Romney release his tax returns and allow us to ask questions?
David...Obama could go over his timeline without giving away any tactical info...that is just nonsense....and as far as being a liar....so many of the so called lies are Romney disagreeing with the liberal media's interpretation of his policies. Just because liberal talk show hosts say it is so....doesn't make it so....
Obama lies as well....

nolaughingmatter.....Be careful...facts tend to make them go into a rage, call us names and collapse our posts......get ready.
The way that Mitt Romney (and Ryan) deal with being called out for their lies is to swear to them and double down on them. They are trying to reach the "low information voters". There are some out there who believe what they are saying and they will vote. I saw Ryan yesterday saying that Obama bankrupted the auto industry and people were cheering.
What a sad day it would be if these two win the election through the acts of GOP officials to muck up the election in Ohio, and the lies their campaign is built on.
Romney's lies make a mockery of the office of the President of the United States. He obviously does not respect the global importance of the job.
China Expansion Key to Chrysler Growth
by Richard Chow-Wah
October 2, 2007 7:20 AM
Richard Chow-Wah is vice president of powertrain manufacturing
China is a critical test ground for Chrysler LLC as we seek to expand our sales outside North America. We plan to license vehicle production, partner in manufacturing and build cars in joint ventures with local partners to fuel global growth. Why?
There are two reasons. First, we want to sell vehicles in high-growth countries and find partners to help us produce vehicles we currently don’t make, such as A- and B-segment vehicles.
Recently, the first Chrysler Grand Voyager minivan rolled off the assembly line at a plant in southern China owned by South East Motors Inc. under a licensing agreement reached in 2005 with Chrysler. Licensed manufacturing brings many benefits to Chrysler, including the ability to bring a vehicle to market very quickly. You'll see Chrysler repeat this business model in other markets, as well.
Joint-venture deals with other car manufacturers are also important, such as our joint venture making Jeep vehicles and sedans in China with Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. Chrysler is also looking to start a second joint venture to make cars for the China market, where passenger-car sales grew 35% last year. There are a number of options for local partners, although I can’t give you any details right now.
Chrysler already has a manufacturing deal with Chery Automotive. Under that agreement, Chrysler will export a series of small, Chery-made cars and sell them under the Dodge brand name. The first models could be on sale in Latin America and other developing markets in about a year. We’re aiming to sell them in the U.S. and Western Europe by the end of 2009. We’ll work hard to keep the price low to open up a customer base that today we don't serve.
There have been some highly publicized cases of hazardous Chinese-made products being sold in the U.S. lately. We realize this could affect the image of Chinese-built cars as well, but we promise that these cars will meet safety requirements and customer quality standards in the markets where they are sold. A team of Chrysler engineers is working alongside our partners to make sure that happens.
We continue to look for different opportunities for joint venture partners or alliances. The only requirement is that these agreements bring value to Chrysler and our customers.
Fact checks are always good I also have forward all my research to ALL News Outletsand to Romney these are just 2 I am posting here I have alot more CHRYSLER TO SELL VEHICLES AND COMPONENTS TO CHINA HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation(NYSE: C) today announced it will sell more than $68 million worth of vehicles and engine components to a Chinese government buying delegation which represents several Chinese firms.
The contract was signed today by Chrysler Vice President of International Operations Joseph E. Cappy and Chinese State Councilor Gan ZiYu at a ceremony at Cobo Center in Detroit. "Chrysler's international strategy of maintaining the flexibility to meet the demands of various customers worldwide is exemplified in this agreement with its combination of built-up exports, complete knock down (CKD) Jeep Cherokees and 2.2 liter engine components," said Cappy. "It is a significant and logical step beyond our Beijing Jeep joint venture and First Automobile Works license agreements in China where we have had two very strong and successful relationships for the past nine years. "It appears the Chinese are anxious to improve the balance of trade and we can only hope this agreement will open up more trading opportunities," Cappy said. The new agreement with the Chinese buying delegation represents more than 3,200 units, including 1,700 built-up Dodge Maxi Wagons and Dodge Caravans, 1,500 Jeep Cherokee CKD kits with 4.0 and 2.5 liter MPI engines, and various components for 2.2 liter engines. Chrysler expects to ship the vehicles and components in the fourth quarter of this year. Chrysler owns 42 percent of the Beijing Jeep Corporation, a joint venture with Beijing Automobile Works, where both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive Jeep Cherokees and left-hand-drive BJ212 models are assembled. Chrysler also has a long-term technology transfer license and engine machinery supply agreement with First Automobile Works in Changchun for the production of 2.2 liter and 2.5 liter engines. -0- /CONTACT: Tom Houston, 313-252-8790, or Tony Cervone, 313-252-8800, both of Chrysler/ (C) CO: Chrysler Corporation ST: Michigan IN: AUT SU: CONIt is heinous for Romney to repeat a lie. It is heinous to think that you can live with yourself!
Trust - defined as assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something. - as defined by Websters 9th Collegiate Dictionary.
Unfortunately for Mittens trust is something that is earned based on your actions. Mitt has proved that he cannot be trusted to do for anyone other than his 1% friends! The flip-flops that have left (me at least) with whiplash, his campaign surrogates that are ignorant, racists, and buffoons, Mitt's inability to stand up against the basic incivility on display by his party, along with his out-right contempt for 47% of the American people - all make him totally unqualified to lead US!!
The fact that Mitt has tripled down on lies so much so that the CEO of the company that he's lying about has had to come out and call him a liar is further evidence of his desperation; and at this late stage in the game "desperation" isn't what needs to be shown to US!
Just save US all of the trouble and drop out now, graciously, because at least I'll have a little bit of respect for you Mitt.
It's hard to imagine what goes on in the "war room" of the Romney campaign. You would think that maybe there are some folks in there who have consciences, know right from wrong, and can see the potential damage done by being caught in these lies. Maybe I'm wrong and there are no such people present. The only thing I know is that there ARE people in the room who believe that it would be worse to admit to being wrong (aka lying), and that it is better to perpetuate the lies. And obviously Romney trusts these people.
Assuming Romney would include the same group of people as his cabinet members, advisers, and department heads in Washington, how in the word does he think he'd be able to trust them to tell him the truth instead of saving their own hind ends? Is this really an MO he thinks would produce a great presidency?
The New York Times editorialized today, "It's bad enough to be wrong on the policy. It takes an especially dishonest candidate to simply turn up the volume on a lie and keep repeating it."
Good grief, where has the NYT been throughout this entire campaign? Romney has "turned up the volume on lies and has kept repeating them" since last fall, when the push for the GOP nomination started. This is just more of the same.
If the so-called "journalists" at the networks and in the print media had been doing their da***d job for the past year or so, this election would have pretty much been decided some time ago.
Oh, wait. Maybe that explains the media's lack of interest in complete and accurate reporting of the Romney/Ryan campaign.
You know why Mitt Romney’s strategy of deny and lie has never been tried before, because no single journalist would ever let him get away with it before. I don't know what's worse, the unprecedented amount of denials and lies this election or the new precedent media has set in regards to what they will let politicians get away with.
Better late than not at all.
Being called out on this latest whopper at this point in the campaign will hurt Mittens the most, because it's so close to election day.
But a cynical part of me wonders if Mittens was given a pass again and again by the MSM because of subconscious racism. He's the white guy, after all. But this latest lie is so egregious and affects so many people in a bedrock American industry, that they HAVE to call it out.
I am so glad that on Nov. 7, Mittens will disappear into obscurity.
The start of the 2016 campaign!
Ha ha! Maybe. But it would be over Ann's dead body, I think.
Huh? Ann's the one who wants to be FLOTUS.
At the fake Romney rally/campaign/disaster relief/donate my own canned goods to me for a photo op in Kettering Ohio. That is the area in which I reside. I just found out from one of my friends they had to pull in the high school kids to fill the room.. Kettering Fairmont high schoolers where told they could get out of class if they wanted to go.. You know for educational purposes..
You know they were so interested about politics they wanted to come like we did when the local biologist was giving a seminar about the local pond frogs, and three hundred kids wanted to go, but not to just get out of class :)...
LOL - so most of those who went are probably not even old enough to vote yet, and those who are old enough got to see how absolutely fake this man is. Textbook example of how to actually lose votes at a
campaign rallydisaster relief event.Ultimately anyone who has paid attention to the Romney campaign has to wonder which of the following are true, it's got to be one or more of these things:
1) Mitt believes things he said in the primaries and is lying now in order to gain power
2) Mitt lied in the primaries to attempt to gain power and is trying to tell the truth now
3) Mitt has no idea about his own policy positions and has surrounded himself with barely competent handlers who are trying to gain power for him
4) Mitt has policy beliefs but has agreed to set aside his own beliefs and follow the advice of barely competent handlers who are trying to gain power for him.
It really doesn't matter which is the case, or if it is some combination, a good executive is someone who can lead. A person who sways in the breeze and doesn't have the backbone to stand for their beliefs can't lead, they can only be blown around by the winds of change.
Exactly, daw55! The man has no integrity, no moral or ethical compass, and zero leadership skills.
Ahhh, but Mitt does have two things: money, and friends with money. No, wait, those aren't friends. Those are people pretending to be friends until they get the favors they expect back from their donations. So we're back to money.
Reverse Citizens United.
I looove the smell of wingnut flop sweat in the morning - it smells like victory!

I love the phrase "Mayberry Machiavelli's." Really nails it.
I'd love to take credit, but that's an old phrase from the dark days of the Cheney/Bu$h failure. Surprised you haven't heard it.
I had heard it. I was just expressing how dead-on the phrase paints the picture.
As a side note - when political ads show relevant snippets of an opponent's political ad, why do they always do it in a cheap 1980's tube TV? Can't we get a 1080p LCD up in here? ;-)
Everyone knows Romney is a liar, even his own party. There is a fantastic video on youtube that shows just how his fellow GOPers REALLY feel about his inability to tell the truth. youtu.be/av3q7-a-ayc
Is Mitt a Marxist?
Mitt Romney is getting a raw deal from the media. They say he has no sense of humor. His attempts at humor get interpreted as rather mean than funny. I disagree. Personally, I think that he is hilarious. In fact, his speeches reveal that he subscribes to the writings of Marx. Not Karl; the other one, Groucho.
As the bespectacled, thick eye-browed, mustachioed, cigar puffer observed, “Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedies.” Sounds like Mitt to me! He has diagnosed the national debt and the deficit to be the result of high taxes. He plans to reduce the deficit by cutting taxes, thus reducing the revenue needed to improve our balance sheet. He will cut millions of dollars to eliminate small government-funded programs like PBS, yet spend billions to grow the military. To this Monkey Business, I say, Horse Feathers!
“These are my principles. If you don’t like them, I have others.” Mitt embodies this Marxist jest. After being caught on video denigrating 47% of Americans, he quickly explained to the critics that he was referring to campaign policy. He was speaking off the cuff. He could have stated it more eloquently. I guess when the polls revealed that those newfound principles still were not enough, he recanted the statement claiming that he was wrong. He is now for 100% of the people. Now that’s some funny stuff!
Despite these outrageous statements, some people find him to be trustworthy. I don’t. His untruthful remarks include Obama apologizing for America, that Obama wants to turn this country into a welfare state, and that by repealing The Affordable Care Act, it would save us $95 billion a year. These falsehoods demonstrate his conviction to one of Groucho’s underlying principles. “The main thing is honesty. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.”
In spite of all this, on November 6, I will miss ol’ Mitt’s sidesplitting remarks. You Bet Your Life, when Obama is reelected, Mitt can still take comfort in knowing that he held true to his Marxist values by finishing his concession speech with a quote from the master, “I’ve had a perfectly wonderful evening, but this wasn’t it.”
On the heels of Mitt's "Jesus Jammies on Fire" claim about Jeeps and China, here is something else to consider: his oft-repeated story of living in a cheap basement when he was first married may be yet another concoction. When the New York Times reported on the marriage of George Romney's son, on 3/22/1969, few details of the wedding were given, even as the article sought to emphasize that the newlyweds would live in a "$62-a month" apartment that they had "repainted and redecorated themselves."
However, when the wedding was reported from the perspective of the mother of the bride, Mrs. Edward Davies, many highly interesting details emerged: there were two elaborate ceremonies, a civil one in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and a religious one in Salt Lake, from which non-Mormons, including Ann's parents, were barred; that the heads of Ford, GM, and Chrysler attended the large reception at the Bloomfield Hills Country Club; that George Romney gave the couple a new car for a wedding present; that they honeymooned in Hawaii; and that they intended to live in a THREE-BEDROOM apartment in Provo. (The Ironwood [Michigan] Globe, 3/22/1969, p. 7)
Perhaps there were two apartments: a small, cheap, nasty one in a basement, for show, to prove that George Romney did not have a spoiled brat for a son. And a nice, large, expensive one, where two children of lifelong privilege could actually be expected to live.
Four Americans dead in Libya.
Does anyone know if the Romney campaign's prevarications concerning Chrysler and/or GM had (or are having) a demonstrable negative effect on their stock prices? And if so, would not such dissemination of false information be considered at least an attempt to fraudulently manipulate the stock market?
This is to
Elisabeth Hasselback and any other people that want t ruin the country with Romney. He is a man with no core. He talks about leadership. He doesn't know where he is going himself. The self described severe conservative didn't show up at the debates. The way Bill Clinton described him was "moderate Mitt". Elisabeth, you know that what he said at all three debates wasn't what he was saying when he was on the stump campaigning. Here is a person that has been on all sides of something with an octagon shape! He says what ever he thinks will make the sale to the audience he is in front of. I call that deceitful or an intent to deceive...in short he is a liar. Elisabeth, when you campaign for him on your show knowing that he just did his etch-a-sketch and turned in to a moderate inside of two seconds, and you stand behind him, you are as bad as he is because you know that isn't what he has been telling America for the last
five years.
Here is a man that is lying to America about everything. The
latest is about Jeep, a division of Chrysler. He says in ads he airs in Ohio
that Jeep is moving all of it's manufacturing to China to scare the people working here. The worst was how he made American people pay more for autos by buying in to Delphi manufacturing and then holding GM hostage by raising the prices of the parts to complete the cars after the auto loan to bring back the auto industry. UAW is filing a lawsuit about his unethical way to make the fifteen million from the auto rescue. He hides the fraud from America by not releasing 2009 income taxes. I hope that it is brought out in the litigation against him about conflict of interest. Chrysler and GM have sent letters to the employees that the political ads from Romney are lies to get you to vote against Obama.
He says these things as Bain Capital is sending another
company in Freeport Illinois to China and closing the plant in Freeport.
Here is a guy that his son has bought in to a company that makes electronic voting machines that are distributed in most battleground
states.
Then he talks about smaller government, but he wants the government in your bedroom. He wants to criminalize abortion. If he were to get in and you or your daughter got raped , turned up pregnant after he repealed Roe versus Wade, you would be forced to carry it to term or go to jail for murder.
I could go on and on about what is corrupt about Romney. A liar
isn't presidential. You and most other people have means to find out all if
these things. All you need to do is go to google, type in your search and there are
articles that show archives and transcripts. Check them out before you vote for
a greedy idiot!
