Tonight's guests:
Nate Silver, editor of the Five Thirty Eight political calculus blog for the New York Times, and author of "The Signal and the Noise: Why Most Predictions Fail but Some Don't"
Joy Reid, managing editor of The Grio.com and MSNBC contributor

No song? Ok, how about this one for the final days of RomneyWorld.
.
Remember folks, in these final days all factual items at RomneyWorld are discounted 95% up until the close of business, November 6.
Thank you for your patronage. It has been weird being with all you in the 50s.
This flip floping is much more interesting than willards.........So long......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojydNb3Lrrs
"8½" John? Not "The Godfather Waltz?" Cool jam, anyway - thanks!
:D
Great song choice, John! Love it!
BTW, with some extra time to fill on election stories, Maddowstaff, here's a great link to some excellent charts all aggregated up for you, not cited yet in MSM I don't think.
From the Brennan Center,
Election 2012: Voting Laws Roundup
Fellini taped this to his camera as he filmed his protagonist saying one thing to one person, the opposite to another, as he slipped in and out of reality:
He's a director who doesn't know what he is directing. Who recoils from being pinned down, preferring to project confidence yet mystery. In his private world, he is confused about what his plan is and even has lost sight of who he is, as he drifts from one phantasmic episode to the next. Fellini would shoot scenes where the actors mouthed nonsense lines, and the script was finalized later and dubbed over.
Comic American political reality.
Welcome and farewell to this RomneyWorld. Be sure to look up all your favorite actors up in the rebranded version with a new figurehead in the 2014 and 2016 and 2018 sequels....
A profound clown show about the bizarre confabulations of the new Right seeking to immerse themselves within a new alternate comic representation of reality- full immersion- cleaned of all vestiges of memories of Bush or Romney: Baptized. Born again every four years in perpetuity. Maybe that is how the door should be shut on the party Rachel should host in Honolulu- like this sweet life (Dolche Vita) ending on the beach with a stage with the extreme likenesses of the actors from the religious papacy, the plutocrats, and the attendant petite bourgeois lackeys wandering off until the next engagement with unreality.
Two great guests in your line-up! Really looking forward to it!
Ms. Reid is always great to see on any MSNBC show....so perceptive and always articulates the political climate as I envision it myself....I often wonder if she is reading my mind!
And Mr. Silver....don't make any bets with him if you want to be on the winning side!
If anything, bet with Mr. Silver... never against him!

Yeah Nate! Yeah Joy! Yeah Rachel on Sunday, too!
Tell Nate we LOVE him and APPRECIATE his 538 efforts. He's gotten me through the year by making sense!
anyone thinking about the fact that the voting machines plug in, ie: need electric power??
Rachael stated that it was a privilege to do her show from New York following the benefit concert. For me, it is a privilege to watch TRMS every night. I learn something new every night. Thank you for that.
Watch out for the latest right wing scams. In Brighton, MI today I witnessed a politico station set up on the lawn of the U.S. Post Office with pictures of PBO in a Hitler mustache saying to "save NASA" impeach Obama. It was backed by Lyndon Larouche Super Pac. They were soliciting funds and had sheets (documents) for people to sign to "impeach" the President. He (the lone man at the stand) said I couldn't take one of the sheets, it was a "legal document". Really? Do they think people are complete idiots? I was highly offended that they would disrespect the President of the U.S. this way. Another right wing misstep. They will get the opposite reaction to what they want. I know others feel as I do.
Lyndon Larouche is, in many ways, a classic example of an American political "crank". He started running for President in 1976. From the late 80's through the early 90's he spent some time at the Graybar Hotel for a variety of mail fraud and tax offenses, charges he claimed were politically motivated (not that enough people ever took him seriously for him to be a real political threat to anyone).
My general impression has long been that his supporters are largely drawn from the ranks of the gullible and mentally unbalanced, but YMMV. The beauty of democracy is that you can put a program forward and see what support you can get...

Lyndon LaRouche, what a kook! Paranoid, conspiracist, complete nut case. Tried to get 2 ballot measures to quarantine AIDs patients in CA, the supporters harassing people at the stores were asked to leave and police called. Yes, he is a convicted felon, too. At least he's 90 now, but the name should be a red flag whenever you hear it.
The FBI was watching "them", but "they" had their own watch lists and made no bones about indirect threats to people interviewing them.
LaRouchies are not right or left wing. They are scattershot-wing. Here in his home base of California(headquarters is in Bircherland Minnesota, but 95% of LaRouchies are in CA), I can tell you LaRouchies are weird. Right before I turned 18 I was sitting watching TV in my mother's sewing room and I happened to catch LaRouche's 30 minute infomercial/campaign ad that was (paid) broadcast on KTVU. When my mom came in, I told her "this guy is weird, but he seems to make sense. But only if you don't pay attention to how the world really is." This was how he operated, of course. He seemed to have a talent to glom onto dissatisfied college students and turn them against their professors and encourage them to drop out and study HIS wisdom.
They love 'science', but not the science you and I know. Rather it's some weird Aristotelian Physics version of knowledge where experiment is not merely subservient to philosophy but the cause of error. It's like an idealist cult where authoritarianism and anti-authoritarianism exist in a Schroedinger's cat world where nobody dare open the box and find out which. An ex-Larouchie once described it as a world like bizzarro-SuperMan world where everything makes sense as long as you stay within it.
Bush was run by Cheney, as per popular lefty conspiracy theories, but Cheney was run by his wife. Mwaaahaahaahaa. The infamous "Obama with a Hitler mustache" signs? Possibly LaRouchies. They've got every possibility covered. They're die-hard 9/11 troofers.
Global Warming is a hoax run by a conspiracy to lead us into an anti-industrial age that leads to world poverty and starvation? Another attempt by Malthusians to contract world population. Preferably at the cost of brown people. Echos from his Trotskyite past.
LaRouche theory isn't one piece of yarn that you can pull on one thread and take the whole apart. It's got the weft woven in. Or maybe it's like a child's kaleidescope offering a disjunct world view that when disturbed shifts subtly or catastrophically to some new weird vision while remaining internally consistent. They are at once completely occult and yet transparent.
If you are mathematically competent and want to amuse yourself with absurdities, google doubling the square.
BTW, someone pointed out to me today that all those emegency workers who went to the east coast to help out, if they did not vote early or turn in absentee ballots already, may not be able to vote because they are out of state. Hope someone figures out how to remedy that. Just sayin...
i wish Rachel would put all the lies and gaffes Romney has started since the republican debates till now. When you add them up such as the Etch a sketch comment, I'll bet you $10,000 to Perry, 47% comment, get rid of Big Bird, The navy comment about less ships since 1916, comment about the Brits not being ready for the Olympics, introducing Ryan as his "PRESIDENT", I like being able to fire people who provide services to me, "I'm not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there, "I went to a number of women's groups and said 'Can you help us find folks?' and they brought us whole binders full of women" As well as:
My dad, as you probably know, was the governor of Michigan and was the head of a car company. But he was born in Mexico... and had he been born of, uh, Mexican parents, I'd have a better shot at winning this. But he was unfortunately born to Americans living in Mexico. He lived there for a number of years. I mean, I say that jokingly, but it would be helpful to be Latino.
put these all together and you have some great laughs!!
They say lots of funny things. Remember when Obama said he had been to all 57 states- lol. Or Biden saying there hasn't been a day he hasn't been ashamed to be vp in the current administration. Classics, and you're right, they can be funny.
Rachael,
Being from Florida, I am not a bit surprised by your report on how the election is going on here. Palm Beach County, Boward, Dade are always a mess. Also, not all counties can vote early, some only have one downtown location to vote and the counties can be quite large so if you don't have means to make it to the early voting place, you are out of luck. This makes little to no sense. I dream of the days when our Gov. was Charlie Crist. I real moderate Republican and worked across party lines all the time.
As a moderate, registered independant woman... I have had enough of the strong arm tactics set out by the GOP and Tea party in this state. I am voting for Obama. I hope he carries Florida despite what the Romney team has tried to throw up as roadblocks.
Hey Rachel,
Why not ask the gazillionaires who have been giving money to the politicians to give to the disaster victims. Surely they must have a few bucks left for this cause. Or do they only give to self-serving things?
Great idea. Maybe george clooney or some of the others hosting $40,000 a plate fundraisers could divert that money.
Yeah Rusty. Streisand, Oprah, Sara Jessica Parker, The City of Las Vegas (seems to be a favorite stump...prostitution is legal), Brad Pitt, Jo-Lo, Gaga, Madonna...and on and on.....hell, they could BUY NYC and Jersey
" The City of Las Vegas (seems to be a favorite stump...prostitution is legal),"
I see you do not know anything about Las Vegas nor Nevada. Clark county which LV belongs to Prostitution is ILLEGAL. you have to go 60 miles to Pahrump.
Well I know I have been offered woman right there on the street when I visit. Guys flicking business cards by the MILE with nude women on them (which end up all over the street) and the :titty: busses and van constantly driving around to find johns....i guess if you cant get it in las vegas, they will gladly take you to where you can!
Well, never been to Vegas, but would suspect if the democrats wanted to hold a super large fund raising bake sale for the economy out there, that some well-heeled democrat would foot the bill to hire a transportation company to get bill Clinton and any other takers that last 60 miles to the promised land.
High O Silver !!! - Thanks for your honest and factual intrepretation of the numbers, Keep up the great work. We've got your back...
Love your show, but I think you overdid it a bit regarding the voting situation in NC. I participated in early voting today. No lines, no hassle. Yes, the ballot does not allow straight ticket voting for the presidential race, but there is essentially no confusion. It is the first race on the ballot and it clearly states that it does not count when voting straight ticket. The option to vote straight ticket comes after the presidential options. There are other races (judges) that are also not part of straight ticket voting. Again, it is clearly stated and they are even located on the back of the page. NC is bad enough for liberals look me, but it certainly doesn't need to be portrayed as even worse. Sigh.....
Ditto the above, and I'd like to add that the poll workers where I early voted in Greensboro were painstakingly clear about having to vote separately for President even if voting straight ticket. One walked me to the voting booth and pointed out where it was clearly marked on the ballot, verbally reviewed it with me, made sure I understood what was being explained, and made sure I knew we had a chance to review our selections. So, as minor pain in the butt as it was to vote separately for President and party, workers made sure I understood how to do so - right up to the point of bordering on irritating. But hey, I'm sure it this was extremely helpful to a great many people who may have been confused, so it's all good.
Nate you do a great job, look forward to your work and books.
Really Love You, Old White Guy !
Ann Rmoney Quote; "The Guys Black For Christ Sake" !!
Where exactly is this?
don't look behind the curtain
Two references to elections in NC, and 1.5 errors. You need a source in NC who knows something (like me).
Yesterday you showed a picture of Sec of State Elaine Marshall when discussing who's in charge of voting. Wrong! NCSOS has nothing to do with running voting. There's a separate gov-appointed Bd of Elections with both parties represented.
Today you talked about straight ticket voting. You correctly pointed out that a straight ticket vote doesn't include president. You didn't tell NC to vote for the non-partisan judges. Statewide the folks to vote for are
Supreme Ct: Sam Ervin IV (yeah, you know about his grandfather)
Ct of Appeals: Linda McGee, Wanda Bryant, Cressie Thigpen
FYI, president was separated from the rest of the straight ticket because NC was voting for Rs for president, and Rs further down the ticket were winning who shouldn't have. This happened after 1984 when Reagan pulled in Gov Jim Martin and reelected Sen. Jesse Helms.
On the Rachel Maddox show donate to Red Cross was on the screen. Red Cross websites do not work now. I contacted them in email to tell them. I'm sure they know and should be telling people. When you go to the site it comes up saying something to the effect the site is experiencing too much traffic to handle it all. Plus Facebook people r saying the donations if we could even make them, would not go to the Sandy victims that NEED HELP NOW! They say it will go into a general fund and could be used anywhere in the world. FEMA lacks clear donation links on its homepage as well. Yes, it has tons of random sites that leave you guessing when and where your help goes. The only instant easy to use donation site that seemed most likely to make money available to this current disaster seems like the New York City www.nyc.com Mayors Fund to help the Greater Good. Can you get these cities that have online sites to get their web technical support to add donate to Sandy portals in big bold easy to read and pay font!? I wanted to send money to New Jersey but I can't find a way to get money to people on the ground there. Thanks, Wendi @ brokerwendi@gmail.com
Big global-national agencies like Red-cross, FEMA tend to use these types of drives to back-fill their coffers for the NEXT great disaster. Shame on them for not having the server-capacity on hand to support this spike (that's money lost for them and hopefully comes out of a director's check somewhere).
The general rule is to prepare for 3-5 days food, water, fuel, shelter and battery-power in a situation like this. In the north, you'd better factor-in cooler temps too. The red-cross and or FEMA take about that long to get up and operational. For that time you are dependent on local first-responders, on your own or SOL.
You would be better off giving to the LOCAL aid orgs and first-responders of the affected areas. Rest assured that their resources were depleted first and the fastest during this time of need. Too bad that 25% of the pre-storm hype coverage was not devoted public donations for the LOCAL responders to help them gird their loins for the impending crisis.
Rachel, you have no idea how dedicated I am to you and Ed, Rev Al, and Lawrence. I never have been interested in politics until this presidential Race. I It's seems like this election took forever to finally get here but you wonderful people have just been wonderful to this country. I also want to mention Alex on NOW, and Crystal Ball and the gang on the Cycle.
Your all a great asset to American Journalism. I am voting for Pres. Obama and I know he is gonna win this thing..........he deserves another term, and he is a great leader. He is the best, and I adore him.
Also love the report you posted and I hope everyone reads this in this country.
Amazing and scary that the Republicans would try to hide this from the people, but is doesn't surprise me at all..........they are to me very dangerous and if they ever were to get into the White House our country would go down to the ground.
I will be with you until the end......lets pray for am amazing ending.
To date, in my online existence, I only post on escapefromelba, a site for refugees of the old free NYT discussion forums. There I only post in the Knicks forum, so It's a little Knicks related. Apologies. Its in response to another poster pointing out the Rs always complain whenever The President does any campaigning.
I thought it was a good idea to branch out tonight, while the frission in the world can still be swayed to the global good.

Heat did as well as I hope your boy does Tuesday, mi compadre in this great Knicks journey. I hope Romney's heat gets to me like Miami's did tonight, oh boy. Before pivoting to the recently concluded clinic, of which I have two observations, I have one small stone to throw in the electoral well. I hope somehow through some of you it can resonate. The Democrats and sane-america en masse needs to shift its full guns fight and power on the frat party at the zoo on the veterinary meds that is the House Republican Caucus, especially anyone who touched hands with the with the tea party. Say together this purge is what the country needs. They'll all have great pensions and health care. Let them take civics and political science courses at their local community colleges and try again in two years. Its all very civil. The bonus is that the only real thing Romney has done so far is to elevate Ryan, the prime suck-up-monkey in the zoo to his wing man. A slap at House Repubs lands twice. The final hours are all about multipliers.
Anyway/ team should feast in Chinatown (yes there are generators in certain spots) and celebrate in Little Italy. Just Saying.

The other reason than their downtown locations for the diner and revelry to be in a Chinese and Italian joint respectively, is that quickly Prigioni and JR need to come to the understanding that while relative to the NBA JR might be an imposing 2 with some point guard in him, relative to Pablo Prigioni he's a power forward, a rookie Power forward. It should be JR's honor to punctuate il Maestro's sentences.

Hi Rachel. I only publicly message in one place, the escapefromelba site for exiles of the old nyt free discussion forums, and there only in the Knicks' forum. The post that starts it is in response to the idea that conservatives always complain about any campaigning The President does. Its got a little NY hoops in it, which is, I guess topical...

... Please please, oh please point out the cognitive dissonance if you are or become inclined to vote to re-elect the prez, or recognize the need for a gov that can do things. Now. The Budget starts in The House.
Also, since the House Republican Caucus have already all sworn on the super secret sacred document that is Mitt's tax return to destroy Obama, his agenda, and his country, where ever it is, there is nothing to loose by slapping them back with the equal and opposite force they've been amassing these last four years. Remember "You lie!" from Mr. Wilson? We learned from the later two debates America does not mind the occasional coarsely worded hard truth thrown in the face of mountebanks and scoundrels.

How can Romney be sooooo wrong yet still get nominated? I mean, all that the Repubs had to do was find some non-offensive middle of the road someone and then they would have won this thing: hands down. The institutional and cultural momentum of the US would have done the rest. But no. The GOP instead choose a Mormon super-capitalist who looks like he want to sack everyone in the world.
I thought that the GOP were a party of professional politicians?
Will anyone pay for this loss of an unlosable election? Or will they all still claim multimillion dollar salaries and simply blame Sandy? (49%)
It also occurs to me that the amount of important topics skirted during the campaign outweigh the topics discussed.
What about universal health care (single payer)?
What about gun control?
What about the drug war?
What about getting out of Afghanistan?
What about your missing 'peace dividend'?
Do you really have to wage a war on 'terrorism'?
What about the crumbling infrastructure?
What about crumbling food standards?
What about too many jails, too many prisoners, too few schools and teachers, and not enough money? (63%)
Thank you RM for keeping me aware of relatively sane voices that exist in America. Here in Aus the press is all about the extremes and the oddities rather than the rational discussion and the average. If you believed everything fed to us in our media then Americans are all Tea Party deluded fools who are all gun-mad, racist, evangelicals who simply can't wait to blow a moose away from a black helicopter whilst planning the route for a trans-something pipeline across the most pristine wilderness that can possibly be found. Hopefully along the way you can pick a fight with some natives and destroy one or two species.
I know this is bunkum but our mainstream press is no better at sorting the wheat from the chaff than yours is. (79%)
Will it eventually get to the point where each candidate in an American election simply goes around to every business in their district and hands them a government check? How much money 'trickles down' to whom from the 3.3 billion spent on just television ads in the last three months of the campaign? My guess is that a lot of republicans will be winners regardless of the outcome of the election? At least anyone who has any sort of stake in a communications company (or an advertising company). Why I am a Democrat
The other day I was having lunch with a favorite client of mine.
We sat in a pretty good size pizzeria because our favorite restaurant had no power from Hurricane Sandy. Our second favorite place had power and a line out the door on a Wednesday afternoon. As he and I were talking I mentioned that I have a busy weekend coming up volunteering for the campaign. He knows I am more of a liberal and I know he grew up a military brat and was most certainly more conservative. We never question each other’s politics and we assumptively agree to disagree.
As we ate our lunch, an older woman at the next table said, “I heard you mention that you are volunteering for a campaign. Do you mind if I ask which one?” To which I replied,” I am volunteering for the Obama for America campaign.” She took an extended moment and with a look of puzzlement on her face she said, “Can I ask you why?” I realizing that I had my Republican client next to me and had obviously just met another strong Republican supporter said, “I would have considered Romney if he was the Romney of 2002 but because he took such a turn on social issues like a woman’s right to choose, that his party was moving in a place I could not support.” She immediately engaged and said, “Do you think the President can turn back the clock on woman’s issues?” I said, “No, I know he can’t but what I do know is we have 4 Supreme Court judges in their 70’s and the next President will most certainly be nominating 1 or 2 and that the Supreme Court will be able to reverse a woman’s right to choose.” An engaged grandmother now being told to stop by her 11 year old granddaughter whom she had to tell her to shut up said,” So do you think woman’s right to choose is a more important issue right now than the economy?” “The economy, the economy” I said. “Now that you bring it up, I don’t believe in trickledown economics and I know you are going to tell me it worked for Reagan but before you do just know Reagan changed the course of our National Debt and the reason his policies seemed to work is because he borrowed all the money to make them work.” She went on and fired at me about Benghazi and I fired back something about and you think this President has a bad record on Defense and then she fired off, “Well I guess we are going to have to agree to disagree,” And I said “ Absolutely” as I rose from my chair having finished our lunch. As I walked past her table I shook her hand. I told her granddaughter that her Nana is a smart and informed lady and she should listen to her because she is going to teach her a lot of things. All the time saying to myself as the words are coming out of my mouth her grandmother knows a lot of things and when she is old enough to sort things out for herself I think she will realize her grandma knew a lot of things but that doesn’t mean what grandma knew was right.
My client only made one comment about being in a very very red part of Pennsylvania and his next comments lead me to feel as if he thought I held my ground well. And that was all he said. We went back to his office and finished our meeting.
It has been on my mind since Wednesday. Now, early Saturday morning, lying in bed, getting ready for two full days of volunteering before the election I said to myself in the dark, “That sucked, that is not why I am a Democrat.”
I often joke that I am Jewish and was born in Brooklyn (New York City actually but we lived in Brooklyn) and that on my birth certificate they stamped Democrat so I had no other choice. I believe in the two party system. I believe we need to have competing views so no one ideology becomes entrenched which would certainly lead to an abuse of power by one side. But that is not why I am a Democrat.
Have you ever met a woman in the middle of the night, her hair undone, no makeup, wearing snow boots, a fluffy bathrobe, a down parker holding a pot of coffee and some ceramic coffee cups as she looks at you in the dark and says “Thank you for saving my house?” I have. I was a volunteer fireman. We never checked voter registration when we rolled. It was a moment that shaped my life.
A woman once said to my wife while shopping in her store “There are two parties. One who only cares about the people they know and one who cares about the people they don’t know and will probably never meet, and that is why I am a Democrat.” All I can say is Amen, ditto, I agree.
I have spent my life in helping those I have only just met. Whether 30 years ago stepping off a fire truck in the middle of the night or being introduced to a new prospective client who doesn’t know if they can retire on what they have. In my core I help those I do not know and those I just met so I can support the ones I love. That’s it. That is why I am a Democrat.
I cannot help but watch the relief effort going on around me and not think about the time when it was me stepping off the truck to help. Or, when I would be on standby at the firehouse waiting for the call to come in for the pregnant woman who went into labor 4 weeks early from the stress a hurricane can bring. Or, the man who exerted himself too much cleaning up and wrenched his back and can’t stand up or worse gave himself a heart attack. There are 1000’s of those stories happening right now as I write this.
G-d look after those who are getting off the truck. See to those whom they give themselves to in service to our fellow human beings, our neighbors, and the strangers they have just met.
We argue red and blue but we need a country lead by those who care about the people they have just met and those whom they may never meet but will have a better life because of the work they do and the reasons that they do it.
That is why I am a Democrat.
Vote. Like your life depends on it.
Funny story. I just can't quite envision much of a chance that it is actually true. Does sound like something a daydreamer might envision happening.
Rachel,
Exactly who is participating in these polls! I am the publisher of a magazine with 3 married sons in different states ( N. Carolina,Delaware) professions are Physician, principle, restaurant manager, registered dietitian, recreational therapist, and a social worker that is also a stay at home mom. My sister works as a retail manager by the Jersey shore and her son works for a large internet company in DC. My editor has a graphic design company and her partner is a college professor. None of us have been polled for this election.
Could it be that odd number that comes up on the cell phone from out of state that no one recognizes or answers?
