Ohio really did go to the president last night.
And he really did win.
And he really was born in Hawaii.
And he really is -legitimately- President of the United States.
Again.
And the Bureau of Labor Statistics did not make-up a fake unemployment rate last month.
And the Congressional Research Service really can find no evidence
That cutting taxes on rich people grows the economy.
And the polls were not skewed to over-sample Democrats.
And Nate Silver was not making up fake projections about the election
To make conservatives feel bad.
He was doing math.
And climate change is real.
And rape really does cause pregnancy sometimes.
And evolution is a thing.
And Benghazi was an attack on us.
It was not a scandal by us.
And no one is taking away anyone's guns.
And taxes haven't gone up.
And the deficit is dropping, actually.
And Saddam Hussein didn't have weapons of mass destruction.
And the moon landing was real.
And FEMA isn't building concentration camps.
And UN election observers aren't taking over Texas.
And moderate reforms of the regulations on the insurance industry
And the financial services industry
Are not the same thing as communism.
Listen.

Bob Marley took a speech Haile Selassie gave before the UN in 1936 and turned it into the classic, "War".
Any garage-band musicians want to take a crack at the above text?
*sigh* Kinda makes me miss the Dead Kennedys...I am now "an old".
And you can't buy the Presidency
And corporations are not people
And we will not become a socialist nation
And God will not punish us for our so called anti-christian values.
Add a few of your own and let's keep this going.
And you cannot retroactively resign from companies when you are the sole owner
And we didn't really debate the ideas or issues.
Not with Fox,
Not in an epistemic Box.
We all suffer confirmation bias
We pay for prostitutes to lie to us.
It's not pleasant to listen to different views
That's why we don't like real news.
And facts are facts.
And Evolution is Falsifiable
Like things where falsifiable assertions of facts about objects can be tested and independently verified, such hypotheses can be moved from the category of belief to the category we associate with facts due to their resilience in withstanding large numbers of independently conducted tests to falsify that hypothesis.
But Evolution is not a thing any more than Quantum theory is.
But things and such hypotheses deserve to be regarded as being true, because they are falsifiable have withstood substantial attempts to falsify them.
And Karl Popper is important.
And both sides aren't doing "it"
And an Etch-a-Sketch has a hollow core.
Rats. The reading of my first line was abbreviated to keep with the form of the lines.
"And Evolution is a falsifiable hypothesis, but so far has not been falsified."
Is the meaning I intended as was elaborated, but the flow is not exactly graceful. *ahem*.
Hi Rachel I love your show I watch religiously! Tonight your segment regarding the billionaires and their loss on investment really worries me. We had a number of overwhelming, & dramatic issues on our side this season, republicans were making many mistakes all campaign. The money that those rich people put into this election would decimate any candidate under normal circumstances. When you say they wasted their money, I hope you don't believe it dosn't matter weather the law stays in place
If we had a opponent that was competent that money could be devastating! Mit Romney in my opinion did everything he could to lose why I don't know but it sure felt that way . If someone like Jeb bush runs for office there will be no mistakes like these, and we will be drowned in negative ads. Also president Obama has a limited voting record and whomever we choose for office next will I'm sure have a lot more voting history and other ammunition to be thrown at them. That's where the money comes into play . I really hope for the sake of America we get a constitutional amendment to ban money as speech and corporations as humans it's ridiculous just typing it. This issue has to stat fresh in american minds, to prevent it from destroying our voice Those "human" companies with oil running through their veins will never stop their greed . Thanks to you & your crew for a wonderful show let's hope global warming legislation is on the agenda this year!
Ryan w. from The Emerald City
And the demographics of the country are really changing
Rachel, if I were you the next time I found myself on Meet the Press or somesuch on the panel with Krauthammer or George Will or, God help us, Dick Morris, I would lean over right before airtime and say to them, "You know, it's not polite to laugh right in your face on live tv. But every time you open your mouth in this segment, just know that inside I'm laughing right in your face."
But I'm sure you're a much nicer person than I am.
Rachel, so true but you had me in tears laughing at bull----mountain headquarters about Ohio being called for President Obama! How did any of those people get their jobs as a journalist? How can anyone ignore facts?
An article I posted at Ms. Greta Van Susteren of FoxNews fame:
"One of the reasons Obama won was because of people like Sean Hannity and all this non-sense spinning of the news that is happening at FoxNews. I'll like to commend you Ms. Greta for being more straight forwarded and truthful that your other cohorts at your network. We still have a long way to go in terms of resolving our nation's economical problems laying ahead. But let be realistic about this, although it was not by a landslide, the democrats won the argument. That is the way a democracy work. When we have arguments about fundamental issues, we take it to the polls in the form of elections and we let the majority dictate the course. Now... this non-sense going on among your rightists co-hosts about Obama not really receiving a mandate is fundamentally wrong. He did get a mandate from the majority. No president ever has won every single vote. So I do not see the logic about Obama not having our nation support. His ideas won the election, not hurricane Sandy or whatever specific ad his campaign ran. It was the president's arguments that convinced the nation, so essentially we spoke on what we believe and now we should all come together to implement those ideas. That is even if the ideas do not resonate as good policies for the losing end. Each candidate was very clear of what they wanted to do and the majority bought the liberal agenda and not the extremist conservative agenda that the republicans were trying to sell. I know that this is painful for people like Senator McCormick and Representative Bohener to take but the message from the people is clear. We want for everyone to work with the President's ideas and implement them. Compromise from the right wing is of utmost importance here for this to work. Stop being hard headed and realize the facts. We are a libertarian country by a majority and we want to move away from the extreme conservatism of the past, especially when it comes to social issues. There is one common thing that we all agree. We should get our fiscal house in order. Now, Mr. Romney economical argument was that in order to do that. we needed to cut taxes across and easy-up in regulations that would let corporations take us into the future and to cut entitlements to help us deal with the nation debt. Mr. Obama argument was that we needed to raise taxes on people making over 200K and invest in scientific researches and in education to re-built our infrastructure in an economic environment that is becoming more global and technical oriented by the day and for us to try to lead on those technical advancements, particularly advancements in energy technologies. He also argue than rather than cutting entitlements outright, that we find the way to keep and better manage them to ensure their survivals and to just eliminate entitlements for the rich corporations such as the oil companies. They, (Romney and Obama), both argumented their cases and views and at the end the majority elected what we think is a better approach. Now that the president's framework has being argumented and won by a majority, I really think that the republican house should be helping our president implement what we vote for... The reason I am saying this is because I already have started to hear the same obstructionist arguments from the right that have hampered us since the 2010 election. Stop obstructing our president!!! The elections are over. Hannity today was trying to claim that one of the reasons that Romney loss was because of intimidation at the polls by the Black Panthers.. What kind of non-sense is this? Let's stop this nonsense. We had an election and the people spoke. Let's now get together as a nation and work together to move the nation forward. There is no gain in trying to blame this or that and to spend four more years of arguments without doing nothing. We cannot afford that.. If the republicans choose to spend the next four years doing the same thing as they did the last two, which was trying to make the democrats look bad so they can gain political power, this is going to have the opposite effect. We, the people, will vote you all out of the house of representative in 2014, we will totally eliminate the party out... The message that republicans should be carrying now is one of coming together as a country not trying to make the country look bad so you can say "I told you so..". That did not work for the last two years and will not work now or in the future. The future of the republican party is to start to understand the new reality of politic in the US. We are more liberal than the country was 20-30 years ago. So, with that understanding, let's met somewhere in the middle and work out our differences. You do not want the party to look as the party of no compromising.. Compromising resolve differences. It is not "my way or the highway.." It is, "we are all on this together so let us find common grounds". And about Bengazhi, please stop. Let the congressional investigation come to their conclusions and then we can have a better idea of what really happened there and try to fix it so it would not happened again, as we did with 9/11. The blame game is unproductive and should be left for political campaigns only. As I said.. the elections are over. And Mr.Obama won fair and square. Accept it. Embrace it. And let's become an union again. At least for the next 4 years, let's stop the politicking. We are all tire of the constant 24/7 babbling. Let's go to work."
Fox won't acknowledge Ms. Susteren's post. Perhaps some viewers are readers as well. Hannity is still calling for moving backwards.... Rachel, I loved the start of your show as posted above.
Just one comment: paragraphs are your friend.
Good post. You're absolutely right about everything, but I'm not so sure about the FEMA camps deal.
We just had another 'quake off Vancouver Island today. It was a 6.3. There was also one, today, a 7.4 off the West Coast of Guatemala.
On October 27TH there was a 7.7 'quake off the coast of Haida Gwaii, only a couple of hundred miles north of today's 'quake off Vancouver Island.
I don't know what's up but for the first time in my life I'm glad I don't live on the West Coast.
Earthquakes sometimes happen in rings of volcanos (like in the "Ring of Fire" including Japan and California), and once some start kicking in at one part, the others start to follow. It usually means there is about to be something big (like an eruption). All those earthquakes make me wonder if some really bad volcano is about to blow somewhere in the ocean.
Oh dear! And now there was another quake 7.5, I think, 60 miles off the coast...unfortunately, CNN.s coverage was so poor that the guy was asking the expert on the phone about damage instead of the importantr relevant issues raised here about the other quakes, Ring of Fire, volcanoes, etc. And the expert responded, "Uh....no....it's...60 miles off the coast...!" Sixty miles from the first trees. Not a lot of skyscrapers to fall... Honestly. Maybe we do need Al Jazeera. I am just burned out on TV news and love political talk that makes me think like Rachel.
I thought this was really one of the best segments I'd seen on TRMS. The collection of right wing myths was incredible in it's cumulative power. And this was on the heels of a superbly edited Fox News montage of Rove, Fox Anchors, and their propaganda machine running headlong into facts, math, and reality that they could not spin their way out of. Not the least of which was the irrefutable reelection of Barack Obama.
America is about all the possibilities, not a slogan or one groups definition.
Amazing "poetry" Will!!! I'm keeping it to respond to trolls cause it says it all!!
Crowing while the right wingers eat crow?
Haven't you heard? It ain't very bright to mess with a crazy man. We now have quite a few crazy people out there once more rushing to the gun shops, once again sure Obama will do the right thing and outlaw guns! So we know two things remain the same 1)These fanatics on the right will never learn and 2)There are a bunch of lunatics with guns in our towns and they are just waiting for FOX or Rush to say the word.
I suggest we invest in police and courts. More public jails may be a good idea also.
Now excuse me but I finally quit laughing long enough to catch a breath so now I can get back to watching these poor republicans walking around in shock and dismay.
As Barry Lynn put it at:http://au.org/media/press-releases/election-outcome-is-bitter-defeat-for-catholic-bishops-and-religious-right
"Efforts by the Catholic bishops and Religious Right groups to control the outcome of the 2012 elections largely failed, but the culture war over marriage, birth control and individual freedom may heat up anyway, says Americans United for Separation of Church and State."
Moon Landings? HA! I have proof!
Here, put on this tin foil hat and these "special glasses", and will take you into my archive (aka the garage) and SHOW YOU THE PROOF! !!! IN ALL CAPS !!!
Haha! People are wondering why I am laughing so much when I am really supposed to be working right now...
Awesome.
The crazies don't learn until reality personally hits them in the face. Anti vaxxers managed to bring a whooping cough epidemic back like we're living in the 20's again. That was a tangible consequence of their efforts and for that, they haven't been as loud lately.
But Fox is different because it's not just crazies; there is an agenda to push fueled by corporative interests. I agree that they may have ended up fooling themselves and truly believing their own distorsions (after all, Fox viewers are the most disinformed of all cable news viewers, and they themselves are viewers of one another's shows, aren't they?), but even after the other night's reality check, they aren't likely to become fair and balanced, because the agenda remains.
Went over to FoxNation this morning. MY GOD!! All the whining and finger pointing....it is going to take them a while to get themselves under control again!
Hoo Boy I urge everyone to take a trip to Fox Nation ....off the rails
>Anti vaxxers managed to bring a whooping cough epidemic back like we're living in the 20's again.
I wouldn't bet on that. IAs are probably the more likely culprit.
Because truth matters.
Hi Rachel, I just watched your segment on fixing the US election system.
I'm Australian. I'm stunned at the grief you go through there in the US to vote. This is one thing that has always perplexed my about the US. I'm 44, enrolled at 18, have lived in 4 Australian states and about ten different places and have never missed a single a national, state or local council election.
I have never ever had to wait in line. It's something you do on a Saturday morning on your way to the shop to get your milk and newspaper.
Every time I've moved house I've just dropped in to the local electoral commission office to let them know that I've changed address. There has never been a problem, they just give you a form and ask for ID.
I've always taken it for granted that this is the way it works. Granted, I'm white and have never lived in a really poor area, but I honestly think it is just as straightforward everywhere here. Legally it has to be. It would be a major scandal if it wasn't.
You can enrol online (see www.aec.gov.au) or go to your local electoral office (there is one in just about every suburb). To enrol or change your address you need to provide your driver's licence number, your passport number, or have your identity confirmed by a person who is on the electoral roll and who can show their licence or passport.
And another thing, in an election the ballot papers are standardised across all jurisdictions. Even local council electoral ballots are printed by the state electoral commission and look the same regardless of your council. They're paper and you cross squares with a pencil.
Send someone to Australia to see how it's done.
By the way, voting is mandatory here. You get fined if you don't vote. It's the one additional obligation you have as a citizen. It's a pretty meagre imposition really - in other countries they make you join the army!
All of that grief and stress is a feature, not a bug. The ability to vote is a powerful tool for controlling the government, and so there are many who do their utmost to control that tool. Vote-restricting laws are part of our American heritage, and when the Voting Rights Act was signed, many of them were invalidated, to the discomfort of a big part of the country. Blocking people from voting used to be an open and widespread practice, and now it is a slightly disguised and widespread practice.
Our system has not developed in a rational and systematic manner, it is the result of a messy evolutionary process.
Having read stories on conservative websites the Republicans seem to be making plans to prevent the "fiscal cliff" during the next session of congress. I guess that is their new tag line to replace "Obama care." Apparently they did not get the message sent by we voters. When it is time to re-elect those responsible for cutting early voting, machines malfunctioning, running short on ballots, etc. I hope voters in those states remember who caused them to stand in line for hours in order to take advantage of their rights as a citizen, and throw the bums out. Actually, I think perhaps those efforts backfired and caused citizens to stick to their voting rights with more determination.
As someone who is English there is no such word as `math` it is either mathematics or maths` the apostrophe is there to be shortened. Beside that I think you were brilliant with this section, when can we get the show live in the UK I hate having to wait until 3 a.m. to catch the show on the internet
In the US it's just "math." Since this is an American-based site I'm not sure why you're applying English rules to the articles. o_o
Color, armor, fall, elevator, soccer.
u mad? :D
That was nice. I had to steal it and post it on Facebook to piss off my Conservative friends.
Dear Ms. Maddow... I have a question.
What can the typical citizen of the US do to make our newly elected politicians cooperate and work together (both Democrat and Republican), for the betterment of this country? Yes, I did my part and voted, but is that enough? Do we write to our Congress(person)? Do we blog our asses of and complain over the Internet? What's your advice to make "change" much more "productive" in US Politics?
When is the best time to plant a fruit tree? Ten years ago. The next best time is today.
Between now and the Midterms, find and convince just one "never voted" person to do it.
(Joe Biden said "All politics is NOT local. It is personal.")
-- Camper Van Beethoven
Best 16 minutes of television anyone will find during this election cycle. I am urging everyone I know to watch the clip. The last segment about the bubble nails it. This is Emmy-winning television. This is amazing. Rachel Maddow is always the smartest person in any room. THANK YOU!
Hello, You were awesome on election night!! My comment is will the republican party now start using the fiscal cliff=wmd's strategy to misinform, scare or otherwise make us collectively pee on ourselves and allow the GOP to bully congress into making a crappy deal? I think this would make great material for your show, tell all of us the facts.Payroll tax hikes are coming 1/1/13 and are a separate issue but I'm already hearing that's a new excuse to "fix" the fiscal cliff. It would seem to me that any congressperson facing a midterm election in 2014 would take a look at the recent results and would be easy to target for a firm position on the problem before 1/1/13. Even have a Tag for the segment, Hey Congressperson, off the cliff? Si or no !
Lawerence O'Donnell said last night it was less a cliff and more like a driveway gradually slanting. I thought that was pretty funny.
This segment was hands-down just fantastic to watch. Thank you to the whole TRMS crew.
