1. WHICH Westinghouse? Westinghouse has MANY business units, most of which are doing very well. They are shutting down at Anniston because their work there is done.
2. Research in Motion (the company that does Blackberries) has been in trouble for a LONG TIME! They have been laying off for a LONG TIME!
3. Boeing? ARE YOU KIDDING? Do you ever follow Boeing? Talk to some people in Seattle - they have periodic layoffs ALL THE TIME!!
4. US Cellular just sold off some of its business to Sprint - when a company sells some of its business to another company, there are always some layoffs as the new company replaces workers with its own people.
5. Commerzbank is cutting jobs - in Europe.
6. British Airways is cutting Iberia jobs - in Spain.
7. ING is cutting jobs in Europe because they have a 64% profit decrease last quarter.
8. Ericsson is cutting jobs in Sweden
9. Bristol-Myers sold off Abilify and all the jobs that went with it. Otsuka- the buyer - will probably hire those people.
10. Corning is planning "modest" layoffs but they announced that in October - NOT within the "last 48 hrs".
11. Boston Scientific has been laying off for a while - NOT in the last 48 hrs - looks like it is going to stop with the new CEO.
12. Abbott Labs is planning layoffs but they announced them in October - NOT in the last 48 hrs.
13. St. Jude - NOT the CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL also announced layoffs in October but that is because of slumping sales of its heart devices.
14. Caterpillar announced layoffs in October - NOT in the last 48 hrs - due to slumping worldwide sales.
15. CVPH Medical Center is cutting 17 in Pittsburgh as a result of belt tightening
16. Beechcraft is trying to exit a Chapter 11 bankruptcy - it is closing plants to try and survive.

But then Obama won and all those people tried to get rid of what they bought which started the sell-off but Europe and China caused the sell-off to be sustained. Look at what happening with in Europe and Asian stocks. Those stocks couldn't give a DAMN about our politics!!

Duh, absolutely no company is laying off due to the election. That blather was put forth up above by Bhull, who seems to be an obamaite. The layoffs are because the economy is tanking. Has zero to do with the elections because this has been going on for a number of months (recent unemployment data notwithstanding, of course).

I'm tired of hearing this wasn't a decisive victory and the President doesn't have a mandate. President Obama won eight of the nine swing states. 3 million people is a pretty large popular vote margin. Sure it's not as big as 2008, but in 2008 people who weren't in swing states were still inspired to vote for President Obama because of the unique circumstances. In 2012 it was clear this was going to be a swing state election, so people who aren't in the swing states didn't feel their participation was as valuable, so many of them didn't vote or voted for third-party candidates. Despite the fact that our economy is at 7.9% unemployment the American people gave President Obama a second term declaring he's still the best man to handle the economy. Republicans may have held onto the House but this is because their districts have been gerrymandered to death. Add on the fact that Democrats ran the tables with Senate victories and there were many significant victories for progressive ballot initiatives. I don't know how this election could have been any more decisive.
The mandate may have not been overly policy specific but it was definitely clear. The people voted in a clear way for raising taxes on the wealthy a little bit to make a big deficit difference. We voted for women in all sorts of big ways. We voted for Democrats because we believe they hold more of the positions we need to move toward. We voted against divisive politics and obstruction. We voted for Obama care(s). We voted for government because we want an effective government. We voted for reduced defense spending. We voted for Medicare not vouchers. This only scratches the surface of the mandates this election produced. If we really want to get things done, mainstream media cannot continue to say there isn't a clear mandate simply because they believe their duty is not to choose sides. Even worse you can’t simply say both sides have to give. This is obvious but this election was about deciding which side has to give more. Don't worry, you're not choosing sides, we chose sides and it's your responsibility to report it, so everyone including Republicans, know it. It may not get through to most of them, but that doesn't mean you don't report it, the way we voted for it. I hope TRMS and everyone else for that matter is on this until the mandate is clear and actions are taken.
I dunno why, but this just seems to me like a fitting song for the end of President Obama's successful campaign for a second term. Go President Obama!

I would like to see the Congressional Republicans compromise over the fiscal cliff, taxes and the budget. But I fear they are more interested in keeping their jobs than doing what's best for the American people.
What happened to Senator Richard Lugar is a case in point.
It is all because Grover Norquist has regenerated the same "pressure politics" developed just over 100 years ago by Wayne Wheeler, the counsel of the National Anti-Saloon League. It became known as "Wheelerism".
"Vote dry or you'll never vote again" was the threat that helped the prohibitionists win over legislatures throughout the 48 states. It took 20 years but Congress upon seeing Prohibition giving way to lawlessness and ever failing enforcement, decided to discredit Wheeler because his Anti-Saloon League was spending too much money in various congressional races to combat drinking which the majority of the electorate was pretty much OK with.
Is this all sounding a bit too familiar or what? I'd like to know just how many Republican representatives who've signed Norquist's pledge would actually agree with the President and the majority of the electorate and be willing to compromise if they weren't afraid of better funded challengers in their next primary election?
Mr. Norquist is famous for saying, "I'm not in favor of abolishing the government. I just want to shrink it down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub." As a practicing Wheelerist, would he use a bathtub filled with rotgut gin?

I'm a little confused -- it was stated that Boehner and McConnell did not take a phone call from the President of the United States because they were asleep? Is not the Speaker 3rd in line for replacing the President? I thought protocol is to answer the phone when your boss calls - especially, when the boss is the President. He did not know what he was calling about.
I thought the meeting held the night of President Obama's first Inaugural ball was treason and now these same people don't answer the phone? Do the republicans have any respect for themselves?

I honestly believe that going off the "cliff" would be the best thing. It would end the Bush tax cuts, neuter Grover Norquist, and cut spending in the defence department. Congress could then convene and make retroactive the new defence budget and (hopefully) lower taxes on the working class. Go back to the productive Clinton numbers.
Trust me, the "job creators" was a GOP talking point. They'll be just fine with paying a few more points in the taxes. 23 million jobs were created under Clinton's percentages. 800,000 a month lost under the Bush administration.

Watching the show and yes, Tucson is a mess. Recent changes meant that driver's licenses are no longer considered an acceptable form of ID at the DMV. You can't get or renew an AZ DL or ID without a certified birth certificate, passport, or military ID...and you need one of those to vote. Of course, authorities did not make this clear in advance, not even on their website. I only learned of the law when I went to the DMV to trade in my New Mexico license for an Arizona one, which I couldn't do because I didn't have birth certificate or passport.
With as many students as Tucson has, I can't help but wonder how many thousands were shut out.
Great that Rachel gives these dedicated protesters protesting the slow count of provisional ballots in Arizona, the coverage they deserve. Makes a difference for them. Makes a difference for us. It's such a powerful feeling to vote and it's got to be maddening to have to wait days after the election is over for your vote to count. Thank you to all those who stayed in line and all those protesting the slow counts wherever you are.
I found some pundits having an interesting conversation on tv this evening. An NBC station. A liberal was stating the GOP would have to work with Obama in order to fix the flaws in Obamacare. That was too funny.
There is an even better way to vote in Federal Elections: To avoid long lines, have the electorate vote from their homes on their computers, and the results transmitted to a central computer controlled by the FBI with an automatic tally. Therefore, as the votes come in, John "Q" public would know without fail who is ahead, and who is winning. By the way, every registered voter would be equipped with a unique number.

I think that the DNC's first and most important priority should be, now that Obama has been reelected, would be to issue a public statement saying that there number one priority, more important than reforming the tax code and more important than a creating a new jobs bill, is to make sure Mitch McConnell is a congressman for one more term.

I was truly shocked on how many Republicans were just shocked and destroyed by Romney's loss.
How does this happen? The Republicans began to belive their own hype mainly propogated by Fox News.
1. The "momentum is with us"...but it wasn't and andyone looking at the polls could tell.
2. The Enthusiam gap. Total BS too...Romney didn't even get as many votes as McCain when it was obvious that McCain was going to get schellacked. Think about it...they spent almost 1 billion in adversting and got LESS.
3. Obama is a hated President...who basically got over 50% of the popular vote.
These were all lies propogated by Fox News....which led to huge expectations, which led to massive dissappointment.
Now...if I was a Republican I might begin to question on what else Fox News is lying to me about. So here is my suggestion...tell your Republican friends...just stop watching Fox News. They don't need to change their mind about anything...but maybe just maybe they can be exposed to the truth minus the spin. I think it will also help them in readjusting their expectations.

I believe the Democratic National Committee should issue a public statement and broadcast it nationally that states that now that President Obama has been reelected that their number goal over the next two years is not to pass tax code reform and not pass a new jobs bill but instead make sure that Mitch McConnell is a one more term congressman.
