At the end of a stunning week, here's how you make an Improved Whiskey Cocktail.
This is a Jerry Thomas drink that dates back to the 1870s. A 19th century "whiskey cocktail" is what we now call an Old Fashioned: whiskey with sugar and bitters. An improved whiskey cocktail is that, but with the addition of two other sweetening agents in very small proportions.
First:
- Swirl absinthe in glass, throw out the absinthe and fill the glass with ice
In mixing glass:
- 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
- ¼ oz. simple syrup (sugar water)
- ¼ oz. Maraschino
- 2 oz. bonded rye
Add ice to the mixing glass and stir.
Strain into your prepared glass.
Add a lemon twist to the drink as a garnish.

I am some what of a newer fan of yours for about 6 months now i have been watching your show every night before bed time.. Though i wish you showed up more in other msnbc shows like on Hardball or Bashir's show i think you add a great component to the weekly debate and i always think when i am watching other msnbc talking heads .. (((Thought bubble))) "Wonder what Maddow thinks about this?" I hope to see you more in other shows some day ;)... /// You did so great during the election calling the states when they came in MSNBC is smart putting you at the for front of these huge events the debates/conventions as well its the only place i come for politics and your one of the main reasons why.. How about you Alex Wagner, Joy Reid, Chris Matthews, Martin Bashir, and Lawrence O'Donnell Jr have a 6 way show a big table discussion where you all pick a topic from the week in the news and you all debate those topics and get views from everyone kind of like the cycle how they all have their own segment. Maybe get 2 guests one in the first hour and another in the second, One Republican and one Democrat OR other big figures in our nation with big ideas someone famous that the nation would care to hear from like a John Stewart or Morgan Freeman kinda like how they do it on Morning Joe.. It would be your show though you would get the main chair like you did during the debates/election night coverage this would be 2 hours of non stop debate on current event issues from the best news people in the business and you would direct the conversation.. As for a name you guys at MSNBC would have to think of that im not to good with names and put it the 2 hours after Meet The Press on the main network so i don’t have to wake up all that early on a Sunday to watch it or keep it on msnbc and have it at noon... Please Please Please do something like this make your bosses make this happen... Hahaha i am being silly // Sorry i wrote you a short book in your comment section of your blog im just a big big fan and want to see as much Rachel as i can, And thanks for being there for me during a tough work week you keep me up to date thanks a lot Rachel Maddow you are a blessing and thanks for giving the media some dignity...

This cocktail moment thing is getting out of hand! After purchasing a few things for my bar from previous 'moments', I had all the fixins for this drink and made one. YUM! Best Old Fashioned I've ever tasted.
