Peter Morrison, the treasurer of the Hardin County Republican Party in Texas
There's no shortage of conservatives who were disappointed by the 2012 elections, but Peter Morrison, the treasurer of the Hardin County Republican Party in Texas, seems more troubled than most.
"We must contest every single inch of ground and delay the baby-murdering, tax-raising socialists at every opportunity," Morrison wrote [in a Tea Party newsletter]. "But in due time, the maggots will have eaten every morsel of flesh off of the rotting corpse of the Republic, and therein lies our opportunity."
"Texas was once its own country, and many Texans already think in nationalist terms about their state. We need to do everything possible to encourage a long-term shift in thinking on this issue. Why should Vermont and Texas live under the same government? Let each go her own way in peace, sign a free trade agreement among the states and we can avoid this gut-wrenching spectacle every four years," he wrote.
The contents of the screed were first reported by the Texas Observer and TFN Insider.
Morrison added that "many members of minority groups are simply racist against the party most white people happen to vote for." The irony-impaired activist went on to argue that Asian Americans should be Republican because "they earn more money and pay more in taxes than white Americans."
In case Morrison's name sounds familiar, Jillian Rayfield noted that he helped screen Texas public-school textbooks.
No, seriously. The guy who sees Democratic voters as baby-murdering maggots was appointed by Texas Board of Education Chairman Don McLeroy to help screen textbooks for kids.

As a native-born Texan fortunate enough to have not been there since 1969, can I ask that we put up a big border fence? After we evacuate all the good folks, then we can send all the other conservative asswipes to live there too, sort of like the prison colony Georgia originally was. "Texas - it's a whole other country!" (I can see the movie poster now: "Escape From Texas!")

While Texas is projected to have a majority Hispanic population by 2020, Hardin County is unfortunately about as lily white as it gets in Texas.
As a matter of fact, the preponderance of gerrymandered KKK districts is the only reason so many Republicans get elected in Texas. We are a mostly working-class state where whites are a minority of the population. By rights, our voting patterns should be roughly upside down from what they currently are.

I have to say, though, I'm enjoying my mental image of the new Republic of Texas, in which the Latino population continues to rise, takes over control of the government, and enters into negotiations with Mexico over statehood. It'll never happen, but the irony would be delicious.

As a progressive Texan, I ask people to not agree with this guy about wanting Texas to seceede. Fact of the matter is, there are people here depending on others to help rid the state of the right-wing incompetents and people depending on themselves and their neighbors to make the state government work for the people again. Our system may be off-kilter, our leaders may live in an alternate reality, but that is no reason to give up on one of the largest states in the union and one of the largest populations being screwed over right now.

Perhaps, Mr. Benen, you could find some numbers to clarify for this man the amount of federal dollars that are given to the state of Texas by those in Vermont and the other 48 states who contribute to his state's well-being - you know, the federal dollars that are given to the universities, NASA, Military bases, oil subsidies, agricultural tax credits, federal contracts, etc. Maybe then he and his friends might understand ...or not.

I know, I know -- don't confuse a modern-day Republican with facts, especially those involving numbers...

You can thank our "abstinence only" education policies and limited availability of contraceptives for that. The people who say they hate abortion keep enacting policies designed to make unwanted pregnancies, and therefore abortions, more common.

I recently read a book entitled, "Better Off Without 'Em", by Chuck Thompson, which makes a humorous, but serious case, for letting the South secede. In his scenario, he lets most of the South secede, but keeps Texas in the Union, because he argues we can't afford economically let them go. However, some Southerners said that the North would eventually regret that decision, as Texas is going to be a pain in the butt to everyone. This clown in Texas is a perfect example why the repub party is on its way to self-inflicted irrelevance and extinction at the national level, with no signs of recognizing their impending fate. Each day, more repub and conservative talking heads pontificate about the need to improve how they get out their message, not about changing the message they are getting out. A hate-filled, ignorant message is just that, no matter how loud you yell it or slickly you package it. The Edsel wouldn't have been a success if the marketing had been better, and Fukushima wouldn't have looked like a happy old time if TEPCO had hired better PR folks.

Personally, I'm counting on the rising tide of Latino Texans to turn the state at least purple again, and eventually blue. It's very discouraging to know that your vote for President doesn't count here at all.....another reason to ditch the electoral college.

WOW if we look at the breakdown most white people didnt vote for Romney, yes most white older males did but the younger white males voted Obama in a greater percentage then GOP and they continue to ignore the female vote which also overwhelmingly voted Obama compared to the % that voted Romney. they really need to take a critical look at their plateforms, who they have been gearing to and what direction the minorities in this country are moving.
