10 years after becoming the first woman to lead a congressional caucus, Pelosi will stay on the job
Democrats on Capitol Hill appear to be having another satisfying morning.
In the Senate, Maine Sen.-elect Angus King, an independent, has been coy about which party he would caucus with, but he ended the suspense this morning.
Independent Senator-elect Angus King of Maine says he has decided to caucus with Democrats, which will add to the party's voting edge. His decision ends months of speculation about which party he would align with.
The former Maine governor was elected last week to replace retiring Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe, a prominent centrist. GOP and conservative super PACs spent millions of dollars to attack King during the campaign for Snowe's seat.
King acknowledged this morning that the Democrats' sizable majority "makes the decision easier." That said, King, one of only two independents in the Senate (Vermont's Bernie Sanders is the other), said he hopes to work as a "bridge" between the two parties.
The news does not come as a surprise -- King is pro-choice, supports marriage equality, backs the Affordable Care Act, and believes climate science is real -- but it does solidify the Senate Democratic majority. In the next Congress, the party will have a 55-45 advantage over Republicans.
In the House, meanwhile, Nancy Pelosi told her caucus this morning that she will stay on as the House Democratic leader in the next Congress. After touting the fact that the House Democratic caucus will be the first in American history to have a majority of women and minorities, the former House Speaker reportedly told Democrats, "We may not have the gavel, but as I can see in this room, we have the unity."
Just last night, Rachel noted on the show, "I do not play poker. I am not a betting person, and I am bad at predictions. But it is my personal guess that it's a cold day in hell when Nancy Pelosi willingly steps aside from a job that remains to be done."

Glad to know that Sen. elect King will be siding with democrats, and Rep. Pelosi will still be leading. A note to them both - get it done, WE have your backs! The GOTP is on the losing side no matter how they preen and whine otherwise!
I don't see why Pelosi should not run for President in 2016. She will be no more older than Ron Paul when he ran, and her acuity is greater than any of the 30 and 40 somethings running around the House in "leadership" positions.
I am very curious about which GOP House member might cross the aisle and vote with Pelosi's block on budget bills. She doesn't need many defections to move things forward. Boehner has the gavel and enormous power to control which bills get voted on, but if he wants to do something good for the country and sees dysfunction in his caucus, then he could turn a blind eye to it and still have plausible deniability.
This sort of thing requires a great deal of delicacy and trust between opponents. Hmmm I don't know if you call it trust. It's something like they believe in each other's good will and concern for the health of the country.
But... are there any moderates left with the guts needed to cross the aisle?
Conservatives are very happy to see Ms. Pelosi return.
I am surprised that so far no one has mentioned the age-ism evident in Luke Russert's question about whether it is time for leadership to make way for younger blood.
Russert's question was premised on the observation about the age of the Dem leadership. But here is the trap of identity politics. Pelosi can be acceptable in several categories that define identity for some members of the coalition, but no one can satisfy all categories. Each category has some negative connotation. Age has the connotation of calcification. In his inexperience, Russert had no idea of the age bigotry he was giving voice to.
The real answer is one that Pelosi cannot give, but her supporters can. It is that she is far far younger in spirit than the cynics populating the House ranks- her own caucus included. Her youth is eternal, and she will carry it forward to her dieing breath.
God bless you Nancy.
No one on MSNBC is going to mention that idiot Russert's insulting
question to Ms. Pelosi. I'm still waiting for him to ask that question
of all the men in leadership positions on the Hill.
But for the accident of his birth, Luke Russert would likely be a failure at building a residence out of a cardboard box under a freeway overpass.
Let's not pile on Russert. If the question was about some concrete example of calcification or resistance to change that the current Dem leadership exhibits, that would be fair.
Objectively determinable attributes define the sets that journalists and Archie Bunkers tend to focus on. The person's age, religion, gender, ethnicity- the demographics define who they are and what their intentions are.
Hayes's thought piece of the week points out that the GOP's reliance on white identity politics doomed their chances in 2012 (link). The trouble with this formulation is that he sees nothing wrong with using identity politics- it is just that the GOP chose to focus the wrong one or ones. What I am saying is that the reliance on identifying sets of the "young vote" "black vote", "latino vote" sews the seeds of destruction if our identities and basis for compromise with others is defined solely in terms of these categories.
Is this about the young challenging the old? No. The struggle is between those representing the dynamic forces of progressive change versus those who represent calcified entrenched autocrats unwilling to change. The shorthand is that youth is associated with the former, and advanced age is associated with the latter. But these are superficial associations that work well for an easily digested narrative in a news cycle and simple sound bites projected from a political campaign. But every group identity sees an Other whose attributes demonize and distort the humanity. We become bigots.
What is important is the essential character of who Pelosi is, and the forces in society she represents. This transcends her gender, ethnicity, age, and sexual orientation. That is her true identity.
And that is the supreme irony isn't it.
Identity politics has nothing to do with the true identity of individuals.
"...Senate Democratic majority. In the next Congress, the party will have a 55-45 advantage over Republicans..."
That makes little difference if the senate fails to get rid of the filibuster rule which republicans have abused to make sure the minority rules and it takes 60 votes to pass anything.
WHEW! I'd heard that she might be stepping down, and giving her position to DINO Hoyer.
I LOOOOOOOVES me some Nancy Pelosi!
Plus, this keeps the odious Steny Hoyer close to her, where she can keep an eye on that potential rat, and make sure he doesn't stray off the reservation making deals no real Democrat would ever want.
No one wants to end up in her doghouse!
GO NANCY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Senator King....How about you side with the voters of your district??? I know that is a stretch, but c'mon!!!
You mean Maine, that voted overwhelmingly for Democratic candidates and Progressive causes? That district?
He's a senator. Not a representative. Senators don't have districts.
Thanks for the daily demonstration of public celebration of cretin ignorance you morons love so much. Go pee on the fire hydrants of WackoWorld, you worthless POS.
The telling comment from King was, The Republicans expect you to march in lock step, while the Democrats assured me I was 'free to be me'.
Also free to get a plum committee assignment which is the power of the majority. This is not a criticism of his choice, just the reality of the situation.
Nancy Pelosi has a gift. She makes winger heads explode. Same with my favorite Senator, Barbara Boxer.
You'll notice they're both from California. :-)
This is getting laughable again, when you know the Republicans who want to dictate how you live your life really do not want to talk about this issue with Petraeus’ dirty deeds. Could it be that the Republicans who are trying to push and dictate policies on people to control their lives do not hold to any moral compass of their own? Could it be all those prostitutes are just to tempting to resist and any woman that passes by? Could it be all those orgy parties Republicans have with the rich they want to keep? Could it be all those junket flights with the rich is desirable by Republicans? Could it be those little token gifts Republicans get from the rich is wanted? Could it be those generals have dirty little secrets too about the Republicans? Could this be there is politicians and military personal who are too much abusing power? Could it be in reality Republicans would prefer to just cover up the truth?
I don't think Obamacare would be the law today were it not for Nancy Pelosi's leadership in the House. I'm VERY HAPPY she's staying on.
That's why she is so hated by the other side, because they do willingly step aside from jobs that need doing.
Thank you, Nancy Pelosi! We are so grateful for your continued hard work.
Time for Pelosi to retire. She should be a good grandma and be in the kitchen to cook sunday dinner for the grand kids.
Reid and McConnel should also retire.
Has anyone ever mentioned to you that you are a drooling moron?
The democrats all but conceded the race to King giving very little to no support for the democrat in the race, Cynthia Dill. It was already a foregone conclusion that King would caucus with the democrats.
This would only have been newsworthy had King decided to go with the Republicans....and then....woah nelly!!!!! that would have been viscous!
Welcome Mr. King and note how well our Dems listen to you as opposed to trying to control you.
Please feel free to remark on the experience regardless of where the chips may fall. We would like to know if we were sold a bill of goods by some of our chosen reps.
i dont think she should run for President. I believe they need to be a law of age limits. She is in her 70's and I am sure she will do good. But it s time to retire and relax and enjoy life. I am happy to see that many of them in their 70's still wants to work, but this power thing is getting out of hand.
I hope they dont vote for John Boehmer or Paul Ryan to be speaker of the house, and that I think Paul Ryan did was wrong. How can you run for VP nominee and run for US Congress at the same time. Please do not vote for Ryan to the Speaker of the House. He will definite kill America.
but the older Senators or HOR, needs to retire and let the younger ones grow. I believe there should be an age limit on Presidents and Senior Senators.
Also if we re elect them we decide their pay raise. they should start at this level, and get an increase when reelected. I also think it is stupid that you will spend millions of dollars to win a seat just to get a 179K a year in salary. I believe we should propose that limited in terms, age and pay raise, limited on running seat, hey if you have millions to advertise for a 179K job, give that money to your community to help others in jobs, education etc.
Has anyone ever mentioned to you that you're an idiot? Please tell me you're a concern troll from the other side, not that you're a lefty moron. Buit thanks for the4 demonstration of what "political education" you products of "Whole Language" education received.
My respect for you increases for reporting on MSNBC golden boy Luke Russert getting a deserved smackdown.
By your transitive property, I should love him, since I iove Alex Wagner and Alex Wagner seems to love Luke Russert, but I do not. I find him to be a callow and shallow young man who takes way too much glee in Republican house shenagins, and whose unformed opinion I do not respect and who would not be there if not for his last name.
Watching him go for the gotcha question to Pelosi and get flamed for it was too cool, but I expected it to be ignored by your network, but you did not!
also, super WOO on Pelosi staying around - It's hard to picture the house caucus without it's liberal spine.
