Throughout Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted's fight to make voting harder in his state this, Democratic State Senator Nina Turner was perhaps the loudest voice of opposition. Reporter Marc Kovac of Ohio Capital Blog asked Turner today whether she'll try to knock Husted out of office when his term is up in 2014. She told him:
I could run again for the Senate, but given what Ohioans had to face in this last election, given that "S-O-S" now stands, under Husted’s leadership, as "Secretary of Suppression," it's very important that the citizens of the state of Ohio have someone that understands that voting should not be partisan, that everybody in the state should have the right and the access to vote, and certainly our current Secretary of State doesn't understand that.
Husted got smacked against yesterday in court, with a judge telling him he was flouting the law and disenfranchising voters by trying to rewrite the rules for which ballots gets counted. The full ruling is worth clicking the PDF.

Do it, do it, do it!
We got a very good replacement in CA after 2000 voting machines and all that garbage.
She (Debra Bowen) is great. Nina Turner would be excellent. I enjoyed watching her through the last couple of years telling it like it is.
I also live in Calif. and we haven't ever had voting problems in the county I live in (Santa Cruz). I only wish all states had easy voting like us. It doesn't matter what party one is in, it is our right to have easy voting. I support all you guys working to make it easier.
If you do have voter ID laws in your state, start getting your ID ready so next election you won't have any problems.
We have easy voting in New Mexico as well. I just don't understand how these other states are able to muke things up so bad!
Second TM above. $HERSELF was in the Socorro County Assessor's office looking up a property we're interested in and the clerk had her wait while someone came in to vote early. Took a couple of minutes. $HERSELF didn't mind, and we think it's awesome that it's that drama-free.
It is inspiring to see how some people refuse to merely bitch about injustices and are willing to take action.
You go, Nina!
As I've watched your career, I can tell you can give a lot better than those against you could ever get! The citizens of the Great State of Ohio can benefit greatly if you're elected to such an office, because they deserve someone as good as you, and they can trust you'll call for the truth of the matter no matter where it takes you! -Kevo
Nina, you should run for Sec. of State. I saw you many times on MSNBC and you worked so hard for voters in Ohio to have their voice. If I lived there I would vote for you.
Thank God, we got President Obama reelected.
I have enjoyed Nina Turner on MSNBC. Without her efforts, Ohio voters would not have been able to vote. I have no doubt if everyone had been able to vote Mr. Obama would have ended up with 60% of the vote. I live in Texas, a red state for sure. A friend of mine witnessed voter fraud first hand when two black men with registrations were not allowed to vote.
I am completely isolated from decent, informed Americans, surrounded by hate and ignorance. They call themselves "Christians". I put my Obama/Biden sign in my yard anyway. I could not get my limbs cut and was told I could not get my car inspected because I had my Obama sticker on it.
Hopefully, Nina will lead the charge and Ohio can get rid of all their Republicans. Maybe they will finally get it....ITS YOUR POLICIES, STUPID!
P.S. I am 78, but can still cut my own damn limbs.
there should have been some respectable young man or men to come do that for you, I was raised that you help your elders and your only compensation is the satisfaction that you did it. I'm in S.A, and our count went blue shocking to me, but it did.
How about this for Friday's cocktail moment?

Yes, Yes! I'm soooo glad are a Senator and on our side :)
Get er' done Girl!
Let's Go!
I've been having a sista romance the past months during the campaign. Love her passion & sensebilites. What a refreshing voice.
Go head Senator Turner, I watch MSNBC also, and you tell it like it is, and you do it with such passion. O.H...........................IO
Senator Turner you are my hero! From your first appearance on "The Ed Show" you showed knowledge of the issues and respect for your constituents. Whatever decision you make, as long as you stay in public service, that will be the right decision.
Do it, Senator Turner, run for Secretary of State! You would be great at at, and help to move Ohio FORWARD!
Hell, yeah. We need people like you!
I wish you the best in this effort, Nina, should you undertake it. I also suggest that (unlike whoever drafted the legal decision cited above) you pick up a dictionary and learn the difference between "flaunt" and "flout", if you do not already know it.
THe mouth TUrner kept talking about the suppression. I guess given Obama won the suppression was a myth.
Nope, the suppression made the democrats so mad they all turned out to vote. Too bad it back fired on the repugs. Keep up the good work of be rude and crude reps.
Folks like Dr.p are never going to learn.
There's no sense telling you where you go wrong. Do you know what a backlash is? Learn. No myth, when someone cuts down on opportunities to vote, that is suppression.
T.M. told you what happened. People get irate when you attempt to keep them from doing something they have EVERY RIGHT to do, VOTE.
As nasty as it is, we do wish you keep it up, it helps us win. You can't help it. You drive people to vote the opposite from yourselves with that voter suppression and all the rest of it.
Suppression? Your kidding!!! Illinois residents came over the border by the thousands to vote in Wisconsin. Stay at a friend's house for a month and then go home after the election.
Oh no!!!! Wisconsin was invaded by thousands!!! The invasion of the Illini!!! Why didn't Walker call out the National Guard? He should be impeached...
drtyler,
voter fraud is the real myth.
why did repubs work so hard to keep "certain" voters from voting? you know, the "urban" voters.
Thankful Mom-3182614, so there really wasn't a suppression, it just took anger.
sandyc954 thanks for the lesson, you know us REPUBS are stupid.
Don't boo, VOTE, Vote for REVENGE.
Dr.p, I didn't say that, you did.
I'm saying it is stubbornness, not stupidity.
I just wish the Repubs would listen, maybe just step outside the bubble, open the window, look around. It's what they did, tried to stop people from voting, calling those who voted for the President, takers and worse stereotyping. You think people are going to vote for people saying they think they are entitled. Well, look around. People don't appreciate that and it's NOT TRUE.
Dr.p,
Jindal said that? http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/11/15/15192014-jindal-to-gop-stop-being-the-stupid-party#comments
Like as if I don't know what "backlash" means. ALso People get irate when the
democrats keep taking things (money in taxes) from them. Can you call it
anything else, let me help, Sure you Can, As Barry calls it redistribution
of wealth. Only problem there are too many to distribute to, thus the wealth
seems moot.
Jindal says Republicans need to appeal to a broad national audience. Only the author is right, Republicans can't seem to get past the ideas of the past; we should learn to embrace abortion, pot smoking and LGBT.
I say embrace the choices that those who embrace abortion, pot smoking and LGBT rights. I think we should encourage more abortions for democrats, pot smoking and more gay marriage. Thus, there will be less off spring, eventually the left base will fall in to extinction.
Dr.p, you keep misrepresenting things, I already told you it's no use. Stubbornly saying we force you to "embrace" things is not the same thing as saying everyone has equal rights. You do not have to marry anyone, you do not have to smoke pot, you do not have to have an abortion. Your stances are yours. Hold tight and see how the country changes before your eyes.
I have LGBTQ friends who have children. You are misinformed.
What is misrepresented? YOu can keep telling me< but it won't make me give up.
" LGBTQ friends who have children" They didn't build that.
I will hold tight and see how the country continues to degrade into an abyss
Enjoy your authoritarian life. Dr.p. I'm enjoying mine.
What you have no response to what was misrepresented??? No response to extinction base on your beliefs????
I did, you're not "listening".
You are misrepresenting equal protection of the laws and liberty with your idea of moral standards.
Extinction? Really? My LGBTQ friends have children and apparently they are heterosexual, this is not hereditary that I have read. But are you really saying it is not possible for someone, even a single person to procreate? No doctors, no surrogates, no donors to aid?
There are heterosexuals giving birth to LGBTQ children and LGBTQ having heterosexual children. You've heard of surrogates and In Vitro, right?
You may be misrepresenting yourself as a doctor?
I suggest you do some research.
Are you kidding me with this? I'm having doubts about your motives and/or ability to think critically. My beliefs are not to be forced upon anyone, but there is a Constitutional right to liberty, justice, for all. We already tried legislating prohibition. It only made alcohol criminal.
Does this mean I now am going to run out and buy/smoke pot? No. Does this mean you are? No.
I don't feel like discussing my beliefs with you, as my beliefs are personal. I thought I stated most of this and the extinction stuff is just bizarre.
I made a statement to engage into the discussion on this site. YOu engaged me and told me I needed to learn.
I am not misrepresenting myself.
My writings are purley satirical.
Lastly, if you don't feel like discussing with me then don't engage me.
"These" hate mongers have to be exposed and challenge when they express hateful speech toward groups in public. This speech although appearing to be self expression (a Constitutional Right) becomes harmful when "these" people develop into political action groups and commence to take power by instituting laws that oppress and suppress the voices of minorities. Rank hatred has appeared from their mouths what "their" hearts conceal is far more worst or should I say sinister. If women did not stand up for their rights to vote and their oppression, or if Rosa Parks and Dr. King did not stand up against Jim Crow we would still be in a very bad state as a nation. Freedom of speech is a right but that right should not extend to the hateful and mistreatment of classes of people who are citizen or not. It was intolerance that made this great nation stand up against the British Empire and speak out against taxation without representation, 13 colonies formulating a bound to stand up against tyrants. Why are we to be silent when our rights as citizens are being suppressed and demonized as ungrateful for not allowing ourselves human dignity after all "Inalienable Rights" are GOD given not man given. If we do not speak out against these hateful people they will obtain political power enough to turn back the clocks against women and people of color as such that they will suppress our rights to vote and/or self represent ourselves because "their" ignorance and hate will deem us unworthy or not human enough to any rights. Does this not sound familiar, e.g. 1/3rd of a human is what "they thought a black person was.?
Another Rachel idiot on the tube. 2 cent gas tax really!!!!! Try 18 cents you liar!!!!! Argue facts please.
18 cents a gallon federal tax. Why can't you argue on facts. Why be a liar? Reply I want to hear the explanation.
This is how they cut their own throats! This and ending abortion in Ohio is just how backwards these neo nazis are. Is it progress when rights a taken away? Boehner is from Ohio and has invested in the Keystone pipeline along with Cantor they want their investment to be making them money and as you sadly know Cantor won his close race but only after a huge amount of money was dropped on him. Oil money you can bet your hiney. We must get Citizens United overturned before the next midterms. I hate paying high gas prices just so they back their puppets in Washington.
Hey X, guess I missed you again. By the time I saw your post on Ed's blog it was 57 minutes later.

Still here I see, UGH, I am so sick of the format on Ed's blog, we need a petition damnit
LOL, Boner's a douche.
well, I guess you left. I'm tired, hopefully talk to you tomorrow.
Go Nina, GO!
Go NIna, back to selling shoes.
THANK YOU, again Rachel! Sen. Nina Turner is great and tells it - like it is! The government should be working at a national level to make voting easy and accessible. It is a constitutional right! (AGracefulQuantumLeap)
Imagine, a Future World open to a more Matriarchal Society of Women, side-by-side with Men Guiding everyone toward Collaboration (something Women accomplish more successfully from time to time) in order to get the Jobs-at-Hand done.
A Future more Matriarchal World where cities are no longer just a conglomeration of architectural Sky-Craping erections, but gloriously include Monumental Mounds and Kivas of Joy and Cooperative Unity.
But before We the People can go any further with such serendipitous Imaginings We must roll our sleeves up and get to Work De-Funding the insanely rabid Right Wing/Republican/Tea Partying De-Funders of Planned Parenthood, and every other Organization known to help Sustain and give rise to the Opportunities of Choice and Independence to the Lives of Women !
You Go ! Nina ! You go ! Girl ! You go ! Ohio ! You tell ‘em loud and clear G.O.P.!!!
Wow....if choice and independence means every time a woman goes flat on her back...the American taxpayer should be on the hook for it...you are a sad, confused individual.
scott,
is this all you "men" think about? how you don't want to pay for the sex lives of women? through my insurance, i have been paying for viagra/cialis and vasectomies for YEARS for men. HAVING WORKED AT A CATHOLIC HOSPITAL, they pay for viagra/cialas and vasectomies (sex lives of MEN), but do not show the same "respect" for women, as birth control is not covered.
Hey...short of having a medical problem...i don't want to provide viagra either...I am nothing if not consistent. And covered vasectomies by Government? Trust me... I do not support THAT. Nor do you hear me saying that equates with "choice and independence".
Nina Turner is the voice the Republicans wish they had. She said she would deliver Ohio to the president and boy she did. She is my inspiration, I had to google her before the election. I hope she accept because the people need her.
a woman in the mold of a Tubbs-jones or even a Dennis Kookcinich. Every time she opens her mouth, you cannot help but think poorly of the American Election system. It's amazing someone with a limited intellectual capacity and a vocabulary that screams Public Education could hold an elected office and actually "Represent" a portion of Ohio....
No matter who runs, Ohioans should make that race (SOS) top priority they need to send a huge message to these idiots, that this crap will not be Rewarded, and you will pay a political price.
Absolutely...Crazed lunatics with a racist bend like Turner has no place or business in a position of responsibility.
Turner does not have a racist bend, she might have, however, a "negro dialect". Turner wants EVERYONE to vote, unlike husted, who does not want everyone to vote.
Turner is fighting for the right for everyone to vote.
You kid yourself if you truly believe that. There are election rules and they should be UNIFORM and not piecemeal by county and THAT was at the heart of the argument. And for that loudmouth to get on National Television and infer a charge of racism is unacceptable for a government official white or black, to Hades with a double standard due to race or gender. These election laws are worded in certain ways which leaves legal challenges open and having the court settle election law is only proper.
The Democratic Party in the state of Ohio needs to step it up. The party needs to become more competitive.
Husted must be challenged in 2014. Nina Turner would be an excellent challenger, but if she decides not to run, the Ohio Democratic Party must make sure we have another candidate just as viable for the Secretary of State race.
And, the party needs to support and promote that candidate -- make it a real race!
Ohio needs more Democrats in elected positions to moderate the far right-of-center initiatives that are currently undermining critical rights in this state, such as the right to vote and the right to terminate a pregnancy.
How many Democrats took seats in statewide races this month? By how many percentage points did Republicans beat their Democratic challengers in those races?
The state party needs more muscle.
It's a repeated story across the Nation...in the blighted urban centers...Dems rule. the people in the suburbs have no desire to be Government addicted takers and the Election map pretty much confirms that.
Husted got to go, He's king of voter suppression.Go Tina Go.
