Gravité (Gravity) from Renaud Hallée on Vimeo.
A little rhythm to start your weekend, or as I like to think of it: jamming to gravity. This video is from a small studio in Montreal called Possible Metrics. They operate at the intersection of art and sound to explore novel visualizations of everyday sounds (though not in everyday circumstances). If you like this, the other two at their website are a MUST-SEE.
And now for more beautiful science:
You'll never hear "Hollaback, Girl" the same after this cover by History for Music Lovers to explain the bubonic plague. "This plague is bubonic. B-U-B-O-N-I-C." [VIDEO]
If you plan on living another 50-70 years, you might need to find an alternative to coffee (GASP) thanks to climate change. If not, you're good.
The latest in hip-hop, MC fMRI: Rappers' brains studied to learn more about the neuroscience of creativity.
Vincent van Gogh's sunflowers actually depict a genetic mutation.
Astronomers discover population of nomadic planets wandering through the galaxy.
New genus of fern species named after Lady Gaga. No, really. And for good reason, it turns out. [VIDEO]
Five years of X-ray explosions on the Sun, in just over five minutes. WARNING: may cause dizziness! [VIDEO]
The surf isn't the only thing that's up. These surfers discovered an ancient whale skeleton.
Hearing aids might someday be powered by electricity from inside your own head.
Kung Fu nuns tour CERN. Next Hollywood summer blockbuster?
NASA sets new record for most distant galaxy detected, 13.3 billion years in the past. Talk about making yesterday seem insignificant. [VIDEO]
Geek on into the future and enjoy your weekend!

"Oooh-oooh, fleas on rats! Fleas on rats!" Gotta admit, it's... catchy.

Boy Howdy! Summer Ash is BACK YAY!
"The trouble with Tribbles is..."
Loved the picture comparing one of her outfits with the fern gametophyte. You can really see the resemblance!

Wow that just summed up the GOP and their view on Science all in one go
No coffee??? Now their starting to piss me off!!!
Well, I guess I'm "good", though if I had to live without coffee and chocolate, I don't... I just don't... aaack! I don't even want to think about it!
Very cool, and it really helps to give a visceral feel for the increase in activity as we head toward Solar max (though when the video ramped up the speed for a "replay" it really was kind of dizzying - thanks for the warning).
I have to admit, I really like the very idea of "Kung Fu nuns"! Apparently, they're a new development, having gotten their start only about three years ago. And their world tour, of which CERN is a part, is for a worthy cause:
Also, too:
They seem to be getting close to the limit of what can be observed - assuming the best current estimates of the age of the Universe are correct at roughly 13.75 billion years (and the evidence so far seems to support this), then any galaxies that are much farther away than this latest discovery (and they may well be "out there") would be so far away that the light from their stars wouldn't have had time to reach us. And, given the accelerating rate of expansion of spacetime, that more distant light never will reach us...
Another very cool entry in Geek, Summer - thanks!

Please, Rachel, please post the video you just showed tonight of the injured Marine speakiing to veterans. So powerful, just extraordinary. Everyone who missed it needs another chance to see it!
Whow! Got through the entire week without saying "shtooping" once regards the Petraeus affair, er, so to speak. Must be a term reserved for those not on someones protected list.
Thanks for the geekgasm, Dr. Ash!
I'll see your gravity and raise you some acoustic levitation:

There's also a country (technically, it's an autonomous region of Moldova) named for Lady Gaga:

(OK, Gagauzia wasn't really named for Stefani Germanotta's stage name. But it should have been.)
