In the 2010 midterms, Republicans made enormous gains, winning back the U.S. House, shrinking the Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate, winning a majority of the nation's gubernatorial offices, and adding hundreds of state legislative seats. In response, the party promptly fired its Republican National Committee chairman, Michael Steele.
If Republicans dismiss the RNC chief after a successful year, it stands to reason that Reince Priebus is in big trouble after an awful year, right? Wrong.
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Friday that he will seek another two-year term for his current job and says he has far more support than he needs to keep it.
In an e-mail to supporters, Priebus said he has commitments from 130 of 168 members. He only needs the support of a majority of members -- 85.
In a message to RNC members, Priebus not only said he's "running to continue on as your Chairman," he added that he's already secured the support of "over 130 RNC Members," which should discourage any potential rivals.
This comes nearly two weeks after Senate Republicans gave a promotion to Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), despite his failures as chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
Between Priebus and Cornyn, it's a reminder that in GOP politics, there's often a disconnect between records and rewards. I suspect Michael Steele is less than pleased.

It was okay to punish Michael Steele for being successful.
Just sayin'
Priebus is a Koch man as was Paul Ryan. He drinks in the philosophy the Kochs have of America 24/7. Since the Kochs still control a good number of state legislatures and still have a Republican majority in the House of Representatives, Priebus has nothing to fear, in fact, he probably got an "Atta way, good job, Reince," from the Kochs. Anyone who thinks that Priebus performed badly for the Kochs should think again. Did he perform badly for the United States of America, yes, indeed! But the greatest good for the Kochs and Company is all that matters, not the greatest good for the greatest number
Why those two events happened as they did is perfectly obvious when you look at the two men and then think "Republican."
Oh Please leave him there . He is such a dick.
He exudes sleazy weasel. Is there anyone out there who's skin does not crawl when he is on your TEEVEE .
His lying smarmy face and lack of reality perception will definitely assist us in elections to come.
I think it's a very safe guess to assume this guy's life in Middle School was a living hell, because every lie that comes out of his mouth seems like petulant payback.
I've never seen a political figure ooze insincerity as much as the visual cues evident when Priebus talks on the Sunday shows. At least Micheal Steel was in on the joke, and we all knew it. But this guy... creepy is as creepy does.
"
MiseryMediocracy loves Company."Upward failure, why is anyone surprised? Do you not remember "Michael "heckofajob" Brownie that received the Presidential Medal of Honor" after the debacle that was the Katrina aftermath? Talk about failure, what about George W. Bush wasn't a failure - from his "businesses that failed" to his governorship of Texas to the lies that took US into Iraq? Seems to me the "gift" the GOTP continues to dole out is "reward for failure" - as long as you're a GOP'er and a white male!
Don't be ridiculous. George W Bush was a HUGE SUCCESS - for his rich cronies and corporations. He paid huge dividends on the investments his dad's rich friends made in him. Naming Cheney VP had the added benefit of feeding the military and related graft and corruption in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"Naming Cheney VP had the added benefit of feeding the military..."
"feeding the military-industrial-complex..." - that's better, but I get your point...
In more sane times, Priebus would have been rebuked and forced to immediately resign after his despicable tweet with regard to the President and Libya. Instead, Republicans make him a hero for it. This is part-and-parcel of "what's wrong with the GOP" that no grand poohbah in the party is apparently ready to admit.
100% true. That tweet would have ruined anyones career if there was reality in the right wing world.
Gravity doesn't apply in bubble world. This reinforces what we learned from Cornyn's elevation, in bubble world, if you fail, you fall up.
Keeping the king of scum in his job will prove to be a gift that keeps on giving to Democrats.
I think he did a good job! Of course I am a Democrat.
The repub party has become famous for rewarding failure. How else do you explain Bush, Cheney, Preibus, Cornyn and the Tea Party? The latest rumor is that they will ditch the elephant as the symbol of their party, and replace it with a picture of the Edsel....or Sarah Palin.
Either he has dirt on somebody... Or he is related to somebody.
It is the pro-life-from-incest party. Maybe he has dirt on someone he's related to?
Sure, keep Priebus. Let the GOP lose more House and Senate seats in 2014 and cap it all with nominating Scott Walker and Paul Ryan in 2016. I can see it now. . . .
They used Micheal Steele like they use toilet paper.! They put a "new" face on the party with a relatively sane and likeable demeanor, then when they got what they wanted and needed - out of the house and back in the field....!
It's funny to watch him sometimes , trying to defend them (because that's his MSNBC job) , but you can tell his heart is not in it.
Isn't it amazing how they decry the 47% "moochers and takers" that are destroying this country, but the Republicans no trouble rewarding incompetence. What an example for their children.
I love it! The Caterpillar Man is IDEAL for this position. How wonderful that he is remaining in it. He is the perfect GOP clown to lead its circus! THANK YOU, GOP, THANK YOU!!
Priebus reminds me of Baghdad Bob. His only talent is the ability to say ridiculously untrue things with a straight face.
The Harvard Business Review had an article a few years back about how success and failure in the executive ranks bears little relationship to longevity. "Getting Along" (or having the right skin tones, perhaps) is more important.
I think that Priebus's skin tone is what is keeping him in his job. And, yes, he is a slimy, weaselly scumball! He makes my skin crawl.
Rinse Prewash justfits the part of a Republican career flunkie. It's a good thing for mankind that he and Paul Ryan can't breed, all though it would be interesting to see a dog with two @!$%#s.
He is such a teeny tiny little man how can anyone take him seriously?
Watching him talk is like the munchkin mayor talking to Dorthy.
What was that about getting in touch with facts?
Nothing like basing your decisions on something other than pragmatic information.
This is one Brownie that doesn't have to take a fall. He and the rest of the Republicans are blaming it all on Romney.
I think there is another angle to this -- the lack of coherence in the GOP.
Removing the RNC head against his will would require replacing him with the head of the dominant faction in the GOP. If no one is sure which faction would win the replacement fight, then no one will want to have the fight today.
Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya tomorrow...
Does RP's tenure indicate support for him, or fear of who might replace him, within the GOP?
On the day the Koch Brothers put Paul Ryan forward as the Republican vice presidential nominee, as I listened to the news, I said to myself "hubris." Nominating Ryan was an act of hubris.
Hubris ( /ˈhjuːbrɪs/), also hybris, from ancient Greek ὕβρις, means extreme pride or arrogance. Hubris often indicates a loss of contact with reality and an overestimation of one's own competence or capabilities, especially when the person exhibiting it is in a position of power. Source: Wikipedia
I still do. The Kochs like to think of themselves as powerful power brokers in American politics and, through their money and their cohorts, they are. But, at times, they overshoot the mark: as they did when they let the abortion issue be pushed to contraception and human life amendments; as they did in crafting the Americans for Prosperity agenda that arrived in the House of Representatives and state legislatures in January 2011 which is really the "Americans for Kochs" agenda. The people rebelled. In Wisconsin, they recalled enough state senators to have the Democrats regain control. In Ohio, the voters overturned the radical collective bargaining law. Still, the Kochs were emboldened to push Ryan into the national spotlight.
Keeping Priebus also is an act of hubris because re-upping him tells the world that the Kochs still own the Republican Party, not just the T.E.A. wing of it.
Hubris!
What a run of good luck for the Dems to have this loser at the helm again. His label says "Reinced Priebusly in hot water to shrink head." (Made in Romney Land)
