I spent the morning reading headlines from Michigan, a state we have covered a serious lot over the last couple of years, ever since Republicans there passed the emergency manager law. Unhappy with the way that law uprooted local democracies, Michigan voters repealed it this month. Michigan is still a mess, but it does look as if Michigan citizens might get more say in the next round of proposed solutions.
Speaking from way over here in New York, I just want to say that Michigan would not have had the national coverage it got (from us or anyone) and likely would never have gotten that repeal measure on the ballot and almost certainly would not have passed it without the fierce blogging of Chris Savage on Eclectablog (Exhibit A). The other day, Chris invented a drink called the Emergency Manager and gave our little show a toast, but really, the toast goes back to him. We don't do stories in order to effect change; neither could we have done those stories without Chris Savage. Plus, he forgave us for getting Eclectablog's name wrong the first time we mentioned it on the air (my bad, totally, as you can see in the video above).
The other night after the show, Rachel made us a couple of Chris's custom Emergency Managers from goods he sent. Chris, my friend, we thank you for the whiskey and everything else. We love your drink. And we'll leave the recipe with you, so folks can come over and get it.
P.S. Chris, did you know Benton Harbor brought in a city manager the other day? Keep typing...
UPDATE: We have since learned that Anne Savage, who is married to Chris, made the chai simple syrup. Trust me, Anne is awesome in her own way.

My, my. That was positively awesome. Credit where it's due, my wife Anne came up with the idea to send you the drink makings and she made the chai simple syrup (and the card).
I only wish the story was done. Le sigh...
Don't know about anyone else, but I am now very thirsty...
Love TRMS!! Even my kids are watching now!!
Chris! Isn't this fabulous?! Ah, can't wait to see you again at NN13. You sure have had a remarkable year eh?
Le heave...
thanx for the bright spot. i had forgotted
Laura, doesn't Mississippi have "private clubs" in dry areas, like Arkansas does in dry counties? Where you pay some nominal fee for a "dinner club" membership and then can brown bag or drink to your heart's content?
Great work on the "Emergency 'Management'", Folks! And Cheers! That was fun to watch :o)
Love the show. Love the blog. Love YOU Rachel! I watch you EVERY DAY!
Anyhow, I kinda remember the Tuaca ad you're talking about! I looked and looked online, but all I could find was this: http://www.apnewsarchive.com/1995/More-Marketers-Aiming-Ads-at-Lesbians/id-0404aa5523fe193668b9ddbe91748a0a

Jerry, win for that.
Cheers!
Chris and Anne Savage are the bomb. Nice to see them getting some well-deserved recognition. Thanks, Laura and Rachel!
Been a loo-oong time since I've been called "the bomb". Heh, heh...
Cheers!
Proud to count Chris and Anne as personal friends. Her photography is awesome!
I love you guys! :-)
Rach is a great mixologist. Looks excellent!
Chris at Eclectablog is tireless in his attempts to let us know what's happening with our runaway government. Anne, his wife, is an amazing photographer and is now a part of the official presidential photography corps. (I'll bet they didn't tell you that, did they? I love those two!)
Thanks so much for continuing to draw attention to our Emergency Manager crisis in Michigan. As Chris says, it's not over. Far from it.

It must taste like Constant Comment tea.
Great. Now I'm trying to work out the physics of "dropmentum" when I should be grading papers.
Off the top of my head I would guess that drop size out of a bitters (or similar) bottle is most closely related to the amount of pressure in the shockwave caused by the fluid hitting the cap at the bottom of a shake. That in turn will be related to the difference in the speeds of the fluid and the bottle at that moment. So, the larger drops probably result from the combination of the ability to move a lighter bottle more quickly and the extra stopping time between beginning to slow the bottle and the fluid impacting it due to the extra empty space in the bottle. I'd try some back of the envelope numbers; but, the stack of papers is beginning to eye me suspiciously...
Dag nab it. Your cocktail moments have gotten to me. I just might have to go try one of them thar Martinis around lunchtime. Heck I could even put on a suit and tie and pretend I'm an office worker. Nahhh-I ain't buying no suit and buttoning up one of these chinese shirts at the neck is impossible when you have a twenty inch neck.
Here's mud in your eye.
I'm more of a wine and beer person than a cocktail person (I make my own wine for home consumption! Ever tried blackberry or raspberry wine? You have no idea of what you're missing!), but this last weekend I was standing around the kitchen, looking sadly at the ingredients I had, and I decided, what the hell, I'll try to make up a cocktail.
After a little experimentation, I discovered something that I think is pretty yummy. I have no idea what to call this, but it tastes like a rootbeer float, so I guess it should be called a "rootbeer drunk".
Put ice in a glass.
1 shot dark rum.
1 shot Bailey's.
Chocolate syrup. Go heavy on it.
Fill the rest of the glass up with equal parts milk and rootbeer/cola.
Stir and maybe garnish with a sprinkle of cocoa powder on top.
